The Cartan-Hadamard conjecture states that, on every $n$-dimensional Cartan-Hadamard manifold $ \mathbb{M}^n $, the isoperimetric inequality holds with Euclidean optimal constant, and any set attaining equality is necessarily isometric to a Euclidean ball. This conjecture was settled, with positive answer, for $n \le 4$. It was also shown that its validity in dimension $n$ ensures that every $p$-Sobolev inequality ($ 1 < p < n $) holds on $ \mathbb{M}^n $ with Euclidean optimal constant. In this paper we address the problem of classifying all Cartan-Hadamard manifolds supporting an optimal function for the Sobolev inequality. We prove that, under the validity of the $n$-dimensional Cartan-Hadamard conjecture, the only such manifold is $ \mathbb{R}^n $, and therefore any optimizer is an Aubin-Talenti profile (up to isometries). In particular, this is the case in dimension $n \le 4$.
Optimal functions for the Sobolev inequality are weak solutions to the critical $p$-Laplace equation. Thus, in the second part of the paper, we address the classification of radial solutions (not necessarily optimizers) to such a PDE. Actually, we consider the more general critical or supercritical equation \[ -Δ_p u = u^q \, , \quad u>0 \, , \qquad \text{on } \mathbb{M}^n \, , \] where $q \ge p^*-1$. We show that if there exists a radial finite-energy solution, then $\mathbb{M}^n$ is necessarily isometric to $\mathbb{R}^n$, $q=p^*-1$ and $u$ is an Aubin-Talenti profile. Furthermore, on model manifolds, we describe the asymptotic behavior of radial solutions not lying in the energy space $\dot{W}^{1,p}(\mathbb{M}^n)$, studying separately the $p$-stochastically complete and incomplete cases.
We introduce a family of functionals on submanifolds of Cartan-Hadamard manifolds that generalize the Colding-Minicozzi entropy of submanifolds of Euclidean space. We show that these functionals are monotone under mean curvature flow under natural conditions. As a consequence, we obtain sharp lower bounds on these entropies for certain closed hypersurfaces and observe a novel rigidity phenomenon.
It is well known that the Euclidean Sobolev inequality holds on any Cartan-Hadamard manifold of dimension $ n\ge 3 $, i.e. any complete, simply connected Riemannian manifold with nonpositive sectional curvature. As a byproduct of the Cartan-Hadamard conjecture, a longstanding problem in the mathematical literature settled only very recently in a breakthrough paper by Ghomi and Spruck, we can now assert that the optimal constant is also Euclidean, namely it coincides with the one achieved in the Euclidean space $ \mathbb{R}^n $ by the Aubin-Talenti functions. One may ask whether there exist at …
We study the Hardy identities and inequalities on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds using the notion of a Bessel pair. These Hardy identities offer significantly more information on the existence/nonexistence of the extremal functions of the Hardy inequalities. These Hardy inequalities are in the spirit of Brezis-Vázquez in the Euclidean spaces. As direct consequences, we establish several Hardy type inequalities that provide substantial improvements as well as simple understandings to many known Hardy inequalities and Hardy-Poincaré-Sobolev type inequalities on hyperbolic spaces in the literature.
We prove an inequality for submanifolds of Cartan-Hadamard manifolds, which relates the geometry of a submanifold to the measure of the geodesics in the ambient space which it intersects. For hypersurfaces, this gives an extension of Banchoff and Pohl's isoperimetric inequality to spaces of non-positive curvature. We also prove a modified version of Croke's isoperimetric inequality for hypersurfaces immersed in Cartan-Hadamard manifolds and a sharp, quantitative version of an isoperimetric inequality of Yau in spaces of negative curvature. We discuss the relationship between these results, and…
We prove a family of improved multipolar Poincaré-Hardy inequalities on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. For suitable configurations of poles, these inequalities yield an improved multipolar Hardy inequality and an improved multipolar Poincaré inequality such that the critical unipolar singular mass is reached at any pole.
We study the equation $-Δ_g w+w=λα(σ) f(w)$ on a $d$-dimensional homogeneous Cartan-Hadamard Manifold $\mathcal{M}$ with $d \geq 3$. Without using the theory of topological indices, we prove the existence of infinitely many solutions for a class of nonlinearities $f$ which have an oscillating behavior either at zero or at infinity.
In this paper we consider Cartan-Hadamard manifolds (i.e. simply connected of non-positive sectional curvature) whose negative Ricci curvature grows polynomially at infinity. We show that a number of functional properties, which typically hold when the curvature is bounded, remain true in this setting. These include the characterization of Sobolev spaces on manifolds, the so-called Caldéron-Zygmund inequalities and the $L^p$-positivity preserving property, i.e. $u\in L^p\ \&\ (-Δ+ 1)u\ge 0 \Rightarrow u\ge 0$. The main tool is a new class of first and second order Hardy-type inequalities on Ca…
We obtain an explicit formula for comparing total curvature of level sets of functions on Riemannian manifolds, and develop some applications of this result to the isoperimetric problem in spaces of nonpositive curvature.
We consider the porous medium equation with power-type reaction terms $u^p$ on negatively curved Riemannian manifolds, and solutions corresponding to bounded, nonnegative and compactly supported data. If $p>m$, small data give rise to global-in-time solutions while solutions associated to large data blow up in finite time. If $p<m$, large data blow up at worst in infinite time, and under the stronger restriction $p\in(1,(1+m)/2]$ all data give rise to solutions existing globally in time, whereas solutions corresponding to large data blow up in infinite time. The results are in several aspects …
Let $(M^n,g)$ be simply connected, complete, with non-positive sectional curvatures, and $Σ$ a 2-dimensional closed integral current (or flat chain mod 2) with compact support in $M$. Let $S$ be an area minimising integral 3-current (resp. flat chain mod 2) such that $\partial S = Σ$. We use a weak mean curvature flow, obtained via elliptic regularisation, starting from $Σ$, to show that S satisfies the optimal Euclidean isoperimetric inequality: $ 6 \sqrtπ\, \mathbf{M}[S] \leq (\mathbf{M}[Σ])^{3/2} $. We also obtain an optimal estimate in case the sectional curvatures of M are bounded from ab…
We consider very weak solutions of the Cauchy problem for the porous medium equation on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds, that are assumed to satisfy general curvature bounds and to be stochastically complete. We identify a class of initial data that can grow at infinity at a prescribed rate, which depends on the assumed curvature bounds through an integral function, such that the corresponding solution exists at least on $[0,T]$ for a suitable $T>0$. The maximal existence time $T$ is estimated in terms of a suitable weighted norm of the initial datum. Our results are sharp, in the sense that slower …
We give a survey on the development of the study of the asymptotic Dirichlet problem for the minimal surface equation on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. Part of this survey is based on the introductory part of the doctoral dissertation of the author. The paper is organised as follows. First we introduce Cartan-Hadamard manifolds and the concept of asymptotic Dirichlet problem, then discuss about the development of the results and describe the methods used in the proofs. In the end we mention some results about the nonsolvability of the asymptotic Dirichlet problem.
We obtain a comparison formula for integrals of mean curvatures of Riemannian hypersurfaces, via Reilly's identities. As applications we derive several geometric inequalities for a convex hypersurface $Γ$ in a Cartan-Hadamard manifold $M$. In particular we show that the first mean curvature integral of a convex hypersurface $γ$ nested inside $Γ$ cannot exceed that of $Γ$, which leads to a sharp lower bound in dimension $3$ for the total first mean curvature of $Γ$ in terms of the volume it bounds in $M$. This monotonicity property is extended to all mean curvature integrals when $γ$ is paralle…

We study the long-time behaviour of nonnegative solutions of the Porous Medium Equation posed on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds having very large negative curvature, more precisely when the sectional or Ricci curvatures diverge at infinity more than quadratically in terms of the geodesic distance to the pole. We find an unexpected separate-variable behaviour that reminds one of Dirichlet problems on bounded Euclidean domains. As a crucial step, we prove existence of solutions to a related sublinear elliptic problem, a result of independent interest. Uniqueness of solutions vanishing at infinity is …
We study Lord Rayleigh's problem for clamped plates on an arbitrary $n$-dimensional $(n\geq 2)$ Cartan-Hadamard manifold $(M,g)$ with sectional curvature $\textbf{K}\leq -κ^2$ for some $κ\geq 0.$ We first prove a McKean-type spectral gap estimate, i.e. the fundamental tone of any domain in $(M,g)$ is universally bounded from below by $\frac{(n-1)^4}{16}κ^4$ whenever the $κ$-Cartan-Hadamard conjecture holds on $(M,g)$, e.g. in 2- and 3-dimensions due to Bol (1941) and Kleiner (1992), respectively. In 2- and 3-dimensions we prove sharp isoperimetric inequalities for sufficiently small clamped pl…
We prove \emph{optimal} improvements of the Hardy inequality on the hyperbolic space. Here, optimal means that the resulting operator is critical in the sense of [J.Funct.Anal. 266 (2014), pp. 4422-89], namely the associated inequality cannot be further improved. Such inequalities arise from more general, \emph{optimal} ones valid for the operator $ P_λ:= -Δ_{\mathbb{H}^N} - λ$ where $0 \leq λ\leq λ_{1}(\mathbb{H}^N)$ and $λ_{1}(\mathbb{H}^N)$ is the bottom of the $L^2$ spectrum of $-Δ_{\mathbb{H}^N} $, a problem that had been studied in [J.Funct.Anal. 272 (2017), pp. 1661-1703 ] only for the …
