Let $k$ be a finite field and $L$ be the function field of a curve $C/k$ of genus $g\geq 1$.
In the first part of this note, we show that the number of separable $S$-integral points on a constant elliptic curve $E/L$ is bounded solely in terms of $g$, the size of $S$ and the rank of the Mordell-Weil group $E(L)$.
In the second part, we assume that $L$ is the function field of a hyperelliptic curve $C_A:s^2=A(t)$, where $A(t)$ is a square-free $k$-polynomial of odd degree. If $\infty$ is the place of $L$ associated to the point at infinity of $C_A$, then we prove that the set of separable $\{\infty\}$-points can be bounded solely in terms of $g$ and does not seem to depend on the Mordell-Weil group $E(L)$. This is done by bounding the number of separable integral points over $k(t)$ on elliptic curves of the form $E_A:A(t)y^2=f(x)$, where $f(x)$ is a polynomial over $k$. Additionally, we show that, under an extra condition on $A(t)$, the existence of a separable integral point of "small" height on the elliptic curve $E_A/k(t)$ determines the isomorphism class of the elliptic curve $y^2=f(x)$.
We consider the problem of finding $1$-parameter families of elliptic curves whose root number does not average to zero as the parameter varies in $\mathbb{Z}$. We classify all such families when the degree of the coefficients (in the parameter $t$) is less than or equal to $2$ and we compute the rank over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$ of all these families. Also, we compute explicitly the average of the root numbers for some of these families highlighting some special cases. Finally, we prove some results on the possible values average root numbers can take, showing for example that all rational number in …
We construct isotrivial and non-isotrivial elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ with an arbitrarily large set of separable integral points. As an application of this construction, we prove that there are isotrivial log-general type varieties over $\mathbb_{F}_q(t)$ with a Zariski dense set of separable integral points. This provides a counterexample to a natural translation of the Lang-Vojta conjecture to the function field setting. We also show that our main result provides examples of elliptic curves with an explicit and arbitrarily large set of linearly independent points.
For a large class of isotrivial rational elliptic surfaces (with section), we show that the set of rational points is dense for the Zariski topology, by carefully studying variations of root numbers among the fibers of these surfaces. We also prove that these surfaces satisfy a variant of weak-weak approximation. Our results are conditional on the finiteness of Tate-Shafarevich groups for elliptic curves over the field of rational numbers.
In this paper, we study the ordinarity of an isotrivial elliptic surface defined over a field of positive characteristic. If an isotrivial elliptic fibration $π:X \to C$ is given, $X$ is ordinary when the common fiber of $π$ is ordinary and a certain finite cover of the base $C$ is ordinary. By this result, we may obtain the ordinary reduction theorem for some kinds of isotrivial elliptic fibrations.
Let $\mathscr{E}\rightarrow\mathbb{P}^1_\mathbb{Q}$ be a non-trivial rational elliptic surface over $\mathbb{Q}$ with base $\mathbb{P}^1_\mathbb{Q}$ (with a section). We conjecture that any non-trivial elliptic surface has a Zariski-dense set of $\mathbb{Q}$-rational points. In this paper we work on solving the conjecture in case $\mathscr{E}$ is rational by means of geometric and analytic methods. First, we show that for $\mathscr{E}$ rational, the set $\mathscr{E}(\mathbb{Q})$ is Zariski-dense when $\mathscr{E}$ is isotrivial with non-zero $j$-invariant and when $\mathscr{E}$ is non-isotrivi…
Let $K$ be a global field of finite characteristic $p\geq2$, and let $E/K$ be a non-isotrivial elliptic curve. We give an asympotoic formula of the number of places $ν$ for which the reduction of $E$ at $ν$ is a cyclic group. Moreover we determine when the Dirichlet density of those places is 0.
For a global field K and an elliptic curve E_eta over K(T), Silverman's specialization theorem implies that rank(E_eta(K(T))) <= rank(E_t(K)) for all but finitely many t in P^1(K). If this inequality is strict for all but finitely many t, the elliptic curve E_eta is said to have elevated rank. All known examples of elevated rank for K=Q rest on the parity conjecture for elliptic curves over Q, and the examples are all isotrivial. Some additional standard conjectures over Q imply that there does not exist a non-isotrivial elliptic curve over Q(T) with elevated rank. In positive characteristic, …
We prove that the group of rational points of a non-isotrivial elliptic curve defined over the perfect closure of a function field in one variable over a finite field is finiteley generated.
Given a non-isotrivial elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$ with large Mordell-Weil rank, we explain how one can build, for suitable small primes $p$, infinitely many fields of degree $p^2-1$ whose ideal class group has a large $p$-torsion subgroup. As an example, we show the existence of infinitely many cubic fields whose ideal class group contains a subgroup isomorphic to $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{11}$.
In a previous article, the author proves that the value of the root number varies in a non-isotrivial family of elliptic curves indexed by one parameter $t$ running through $\mathbb{Q}$. However, a well-known example of Washington has root number $-1$ for every fiber when $t$ runs through $\mathbb{Z}$. Such examples are rare since, as proven in this paper, the root number of the integer fibers varies for a large class of families of elliptic curves. Our results depends on the squarefree conjecture and Chowla's conjecture, and are unconditional in many cases.
For a non-constant elliptic surface over $\mathbb{P}^1$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, it is a result of Silverman that the Mordell--Weil rank of the fibres is at least the rank of the group of sections, up to finitely many fibres. If the elliptic surface is non-isotrivial one expects that this bound is an equality for infinitely many fibres, although no example is known unconditionally. Under the Bunyakovsky conjecture, such an example has been constructed by Neumann and Setzer. In this note we show that the Legendre elliptic surface has the desired property, conditional on the existence of infin…
Let $F$ be a function field of characteristic $p>0$, $\F/F$ a Galois extension with $Gal(\F/F)\simeq \Z_l^d$ (for some prime $l\neq p$) and $E/F$ a non-isotrivial elliptic curve. We study the behaviour of Selmer groups $Sel_E(L)_r$ ($r$ any prime) as $L$ varies through the subextensions of $\F$ via appropriate versions of Mazur's Control Theorem. As a consequence we prove that $Sel_E(\F)_r$ is a cofinitely generated (in some cases cotorsion) $\Z_r[[Gal(\F/F)]]$-module.
Given a non-isotrivial elliptic curve over an arithmetic surface, one obtains a lisse $\ell$-adic sheaf of rank two over the surface. This lisse sheaf has a number of straightforward properties: cyclotomic determinant, finite ramification, rational traces of Frobenius, and somewhere not potentially good reduction. We prove that any lisse sheaf of rank two possessing these properties comes from an elliptic curve.
If F is a global function field of characteristic p>3, we employ Tate's theory of analytic uniformization to give an alternative proof of a theorem of Igusa describing the image of the natural Galois representation on torsion points of non-isotrivial elliptic curves defined over F. Along the way, using basic properties of Faltings heights of elliptic curves, we offer a detailed proof of the function field analogue of a classical theorem of Shafarevich according to which there are only finitely many F-isomorphism classes of admissible elliptic curves defined over F with good reduction outside a…
We study abelian varieties defined over function fields of curves in positive characteristic $p$, focusing on their arithmetic within the system of Artin-Schreier extensions. First, we prove that the $L$-function of such an abelian variety vanishes to high order at the center point of its functional equation under a parity condition on the conductor. Second, we develop an Artin-Schreier variant of a construction of Berger. This yields a new class of Jacobians over function fields for which the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture holds. Third, we give a formula for the rank of the Mordell-Weil…
Let q be a prime power and E a non-isotrivial elliptic curve over Fq(T) given by a Weierstrass model. We survey the construction, with an explicit point of view, of the modular parametrization of E by the associated Drinfeld modular curve. We then prove a formula that allows us to evaluate this modular parametrization at cusps and we produce an explicit method to compute these values. Finally we illustrate our results with several examples in characteristic 2 and 3.
We generalise the Siegel-Voloch theorem about S-integral points on elliptic curves as follows: let K/F denote a global function field over a finite field F of characteristic p>3, let S denote a finite set of places of K and let E/K denote a non-isotrivial elliptic curve over K with j-invariant a p^s power but not p^(s+1) power in K. Fix a non-constant function f in K(E) with a pole of order N>0 at the zero element of E. We prove that there are only finitely many rational points P in E(K) such that for any valuation outside S for which f(P) is negative, that valuation of f(P) is divisible by so…
We produce explicit elliptic curves over \Bbb F_p(t) whose Mordell-Weil groups have arbitrarily large rank. Our method is to prove the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for these curves (or rather the Tate conjecture for related elliptic surfaces) and then use zeta functions to determine the rank. In contrast to earlier examples of Shafarevitch and Tate, our curves are not isotrivial. Asymptotically these curves have maximal rank for their conductor. Motivated by this fact, we make a conjecture about the growth of ranks of elliptic curves over number fields.
We consider the problem of counting the number of rational points on the family of Kummer surfaces associated with two non-isogenous elliptic curves. For this two-parameter family we prove Manin's unity, using the presentation of the Kummer surfaces as isotrivial elliptic fibration and as double cover of the modular elliptic surface of level two. By carrying out the rational point-count with respect to either of the two elliptic fibrations explicitly, we obtain an interesting new identity between two-parameter counting functions.
We study the p-adic valuation of the values of normalised Hecke eigenforms attached to non-isotrivial elliptic curves defined over function fields of transcendence degree one over finite fields of characteristic p. We derive upper bounds on the smallest attained valuation in terms of the minimal discriminant under a certain assumption on the function field and provide examples to show that our estimates are optimal. As an application of our results we also prove the analogue of the degree conjecture unconditionally for strong Weil curves with square-free conductor defined over function fields …
We give effective bounds for the set quasi-integral points in orbits of non-isotrivial rational maps over function fields under some conditions, generalizing previous work of Hsia and Silverman (2011) for orbits over function fields of characteristic zero. We then use this to prove finiteness results for algebraic functions whose orbit under a rational function has multiplicative dependent elements modulo rings of $S$-integers, generalizing recent results over number fields.
Fix an elliptic curve $E_0$ without CM and a non-isotrivial elliptic scheme over a smooth irreducible curve, both defined over the algebraic numbers. Consider the union of all images of a fixed finite-rank subgroup (of arbitrary rank) of $E_0^g$, also defined over the algebraic numbers, under all isogenies between $E_0^g$ and some fiber of the $g$-th fibered power $\mathcal{A}$ of the elliptic scheme, where $g$ is a fixed natural number. As a special case of a slightly more general result, we characterize the subvarieties (of arbitrary dimension) inside $\mathcal{A}$ that have potentially Zari…
Let $F$ be a global function field of characteristic $p>0$, $\mathcal F/F$ a Galois extension with $Gal(\tilde F/F)\simeq \mathbb{Z}_p^{\mathbb N}$ and $E/F$ a non-isotrivial elliptic curve. We study the behaviour of Selmer groups $Sel_E(L)_l$ ($l$ any prime) as $L$ varies through the subextensions of $\mathcal F$ via appropriate versions of Mazur's Control Theorem. In the case $l=p$ we let $\mathcal F=\bigcup \mathcal F_d$ where $\mathcal F_d/F$ is a $\mathbb{Z}_p^d$-extension. With a mild hypothesis on $Sel_E(F)_p$ (essentially a consequence of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture) we pr…
We show how to construct non-isotrivial families of supersingular K3 surfaces over rational curves using a relative form of the Artin-Tate isomorphism and twisted analogues of Bridgeland's results on moduli spaces of stable sheaves on elliptic surfaces. As a consequence, we show that every point of Artin invariant 10 in the Ogus space of marked supersingular K3 surfaces lies on infinitely many pairwise distinct rational curves canonically associated to elliptic structures on the underlying K3 surface.
This paper presents empirical evidence supporting Goldfeld's conjecture on the average analytic rank of a family of quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve in the function field setting. In particular, we consider representatives of the four classes of non-isogenous elliptic curves over F_q(t) with (q,6)=1 possessing two places of multiplicative reduction and one place of additive reduction. The case of q=5 provides the largest data set as well as the most convincing evidence that the average analytic rank converges to 1/2, which we also show is a lower bound following an argument of Kowals…
If E is a non-isotrivial elliptic curve over a global function field F of odd characteristic we show that certain Mordell-Weil groups of E have 1-dimensional eigenspace relative to a fixed complex ring class character provided that the projection onto this eigenspace of a suitable Drinfeld-Heegner point is nonzero. This represents the analogue in the function field setting of a theorem for rational elliptic curves due to Bertolini and Darmon, and at the same time is a generalization of the main result proved by Brown in his monograph on Heegner modules. As in the number field case, our proof e…
Given a complex quasiprojective curve $B$ and a non-isotrivial family $\mathcal{E}$ of elliptic curves over $B$, the $p$-torsion $\mathcal{E}[p]$ yields a monodromy representation $ρ_\mathcal{E}[p]:π_1(B)\rightarrow \mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$. We prove that if $ρ_{\mathcal E}[p]\cong ρ_{\mathcal E'}[p]$ then $\mathcal{E}$ and $\mathcal E'$ are isogenous, provided $p$ is larger than a constant depending only on the gonality of $B$. This can be viewed as a function field analog of the Frey--Mazur conjecture, which states that an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ is determined up to isogeny by i…
We describe iterated integrals as unipotent periods on families of marked elliptic curves in terms of multiple zeta values and elliptic multiple zeta values.
Given two semistable, non potentially isotrivial elliptic surfaces over a curve $C$ defined over a field of characteristic zero or finitely generated over its prime field, we show that any compatible family of effective isometries of the N{é}ron-Severi lattices of the base changed elliptic surfaces for all finite separable maps $B\to C$ arises from an isomorphism of the elliptic surfaces. Without the effectivity hypothesis, we show that the two elliptic surfaces are isomorphic. We also determine the group of universal automorphisms of a semistable elliptic surface. In particular, this includes…
We show the density of rational points on non-isotrivial elliptic surfaces by studying the variation of the root numbers among the fibers of these surfaces, conditionally to two analytic number theory conjectures (the squarefree conjecture and Chowla's conjecture). This is a weaker statement than the one found in a preprint of Helfgott which proves (under the same assumptions) that the average root number is $0$ when the surface admits a place of multiplicative reduction. However, we use a different technique. The conjectures involved impose a restriction on the degree of the irreducible facto…
The Thue-Siegel method is used to obtain an upper bound for the number of primitive integral solutions to a family of quartic Thue's inequalities. This will provide an upper bound for the number of integer points on a family of elliptic curves with j-invariant equal to 1728.
In this note we combine the advantages of the methods of Siegel-Baker-Coates and of Lang-Zagier for the computation of S-integral points on elliptic curves in Weierstrass normal form over the rationals. In this way we are able to overcome the absence of an explicit lower bound for linear forms in q-adic elliptic logarithms. We present an efficient algorithm for determining all S-integral points on such curves.
Let $A$ be a non-isotrivial ordinary abelian surface over a global function field with good reduction everywhere. Suppose that $A$ does not have real multiplication by any real quadratic field with discriminant a multiple of $p$. We prove that there are infinitely many places modulo which $A$ is isogenous to the product of two elliptic curves.
We compute the critical $L$-values of some weight 3, 4, or 5 modular forms, by transforming them into integrals of the complete elliptic integral $K$. In doing so, we prove closed form formulas for some moments of $K'^3$. Many of our $L$-values can be expressed in terms of Gamma functions, and this also gives new lattice sum evaluations.
Under suitable, fairly weak hypotheses on an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ and a primitive non-trivial Dirichlet character $χ$, we show that the algebraic $L$-value $\mathscr{L}(E,χ)$ at $s=1$ is an algebraic integer. For instance, for semistable curves $\mathscr{L}(E,χ)$ is integral whenever $E$ admits no isogenies defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. Moreover we give examples illustrating that our hypotheses are necessary for integrality to hold.
We show that the average number of integral points on elliptic curves, counted modulo the natural involution on a punctured elliptic curve, is bounded from above by $2.1 \times 10^8$. To prove it, we design a descent map, whose prototype goes at least back to Mordell, which associates a pair of binary forms to an integral point on an elliptic curve. Other ingredients of the proof include the upper bounds for the number of solutions of a Thue equation by Evertse and Akhtari-Okazaki, and the estimation of the number of binary quartic forms by Bhargava-Shankar. Our method applies to $S$-integral …
We remark on pseudo-elliptic integrals and on exceptional function fields, namely function fields defined over an infinite base field but nonetheless containing non-trivial units. Our emphasis is on some elementary criteria that must be satisfied by a squarefree polynomial whose square root generates a quadratic function field with non-trivial unit. We detail the genus 1 case.
We describe a decomposition algorithm for elliptic multiple zeta values, which amounts to the construction of an injective map $ψ$ from the algebra of elliptic multiple zeta values to a space of iterated Eisenstein integrals. We give many examples of this decomposition, and conclude with a short discussion about the image of $ψ$. It turns out that the failure of surjectivity of $ψ$ is in some sense governed by period polynomials of modular forms.
In this paper we construct parameterizations of elliptic curves over the rationals which have many consecutive integral multiples. Using these parameterizations, we perform searches in GMP and Magma to find curves with points of small height, curves with many integral multiples of a point, curves with high multiples of a point integral, and over two hundred curves with more than one hundred integral points. In addition, a novel and complete classification of "self-descriptive numbers" is constructed by bounding the number of zeros such a number must contain.
If $E$ is a minimal elliptic curve defined over $\ZZ$, we obtain a bound $C$, depending only on the global Tamagawa number of $E$, such that for any point $P\in E(\QQ)$, $nP$ is integral for at most one value of $n>C$. As a corollary, we show that if $E/\QQ$ is a fixed elliptic curve, then for all twists $E'$ of $E$ of sufficient height, and all torsion-free, rank-one subgroups $Γ\subseteq E'(\QQ)$, $Γ$ contains at most 6 integral points. Explicit computations for congruent number curves are included.
In this paper we prove the finiteness of the set of S-integral points of a punctured rational elliptic curve without complex multiplication using the Chabauty-Kim method. This extends previous results of Kim in the complex multiplication case. The key input of our approach is the use of modularity techniques to prove the vanishing of certain Selmer groups involved in the Chabauty-Kim method.
For an elliptic curve $E$ defined over a field $k\subset \mathbb C$, we study iterated path integrals of logarithmic differential forms on $E^\dagger$, the universal vectorial extension of $E$. These are generalizations of the classical periods and quasi-periods of $E$, and are closely related to multiple elliptic polylogarithms and elliptic multiple zeta values. Moreover, if $k$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb Q$, then these iterated integrals along paths between $k$-rational points are periods in the sense of Kontsevich--Zagier.
In this paper we shall investigate the problem of the representation of the number of integral points of an elliptic curve modulo a prime number p. We present a way of expressing an exponential sum which involves polynomials of third degree, in explicit non-exponential terms. In the process, we present explicit formulas for the calculation of some series involving the Riemann Zeta function.
The aim of this paper is to show lifts from pairs of two elliptic modular forms to Siegel modular forms of half-integral weight of even degree under the assumption that the constructed Siegel modular form is not identically zero. The key of the proof is to introduce a certain generalization of the Maass relation for Siegel modular forms of half-integral weight of general degree.
We establish new upper bounds for the height of the S-integral points of an elliptic curve. This bound is explicitly given in terms of the set S of places of the number field K involved, but also in terms of the degree of K, as well as the rank, the regulator and the height of a basis of the Mordell-Weil group of the curve. The proof uses the elliptic analogue of Baker's method, based on lower bounds for linear forms in elliptic logarithms.
In this paper, we give a two dimensional analogue of the Euler-MacLaurin summation formula. By using this formula, we obtain an integral representation of Weil's elliptic functions which was introduced in the book "Elliptic functions according to Eisenstein and Kronecker".
We consider the moments of products of complete elliptic integrals of the first and second kinds. In particular, we derive new results using elementary means, aided by computer experimentation and a theorem of W. Zudilin. Diverse related evaluations, and two conjectures, are also given.
This paper, pursuing the work started in [10] and [11], holds six new formulae for π, see equations, through ratios of first kind elliptic integrals and some values of hypergeometric functions of three or four variables of Lauricella type. This will be accomplished by reducing some hyperelliptic integrals to elliptic by the methods taught by Legendre in his treatise. Eventually, evaluating some hyperelliptic integrals by means of hypergeometric Lauricella functions, we obtain some further evaluations of themselves in some particular points and also in their analytic continuation.
We prove that the number of rational points of bounded height on certain del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1 defined over Q grows linearly, as predicted by Manin's conjecture. Along the way, we investigate the average number of integral points of small naive height on quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve with full rational 2-torsion.
