Consider a $p$-dimensional population ${\mathbf x} \in\mathbb{R}^p$ with iid coordinates in the domain of attraction of a stable distribution with index $α\in (0,2)$. Since the variance of ${\mathbf x}$ is infinite, the sample covariance matrix ${\mathbf S}_n=n^{-1}\sum_{i=1}^n {{\mathbf x}_i}{\mathbf x}'_i$ based on a sample ${\mathbf x}_1,\ldots,{\mathbf x}_n$ from the population is not well behaved and it is of interest to use instead the sample correlation matrix ${\mathbf R}_n= \{\operatorname{diag}({\mathbf S}_n)\}^{-1/2}\, {\mathbf S}_n \{\operatorname{diag}({\mathbf S}_n)\}^{-1/2}$. This paper finds the limiting distributions of the eigenvalues of ${\mathbf R}_n$ when both the dimension $p$ and the sample size $n$ grow to infinity such that $p/n\to γ\in (0,\infty)$. The family of limiting distributions $\{H_{α,γ}\}$ is new and depends on the two parameters $α$ and $γ$. The moments of $H_{α,γ}$ are fully identified as sum of two contributions: the first from the classical Marčenko-Pastur law and a second due to heavy tails. Moreover, the family $\{H_{α,γ}\}$ has continuous extensions at the boundaries $α=2$ and $α=0$ leading to the Marčenko-Pastur law and a modified Poisson distribution, respectively.
Our proofs use the method of moments, the path-shortening algorithm developed in [18] and some novel graph counting combinatorics. As a consequence, the moments of $H_{α,γ}$ are expressed in terms of combinatorial objects such as Stirling numbers of the second kind. A simulation study on these limiting distributions $H_{α,γ}$ is also provided for comparison with the Marčenko-Pastur law.
In this paper we study the joint distributional convergence of the largest eigenvalues of the sample covariance matrix of a $p$-dimensional time series with iid entries when $p$ converges to infinity together with the sample size $n$. We consider only heavy-tailed time series in the sense that the entries satisfy some regular variation condition which ensures that their fourth moment is infinite. In this case, Soshnikov [31, 32] and Auffinger et al. [2] proved the weak convergence of the point processes of the normalized eigenvalues of the sample covariance matrix towards an inhomogeneous Pois…
We study the statistics of the largest eigenvalues of real symmetric and sample covariance matrices when the entries are heavy tailed. Extending the result obtained by Soshnikov in \cite{Sos1}, we prove that, in the absence of the fourth moment, the top eigenvalues behave, in the limit, as the largest entries of the matrix.
We analyze the largest eigenvalue statistics of m-dependent heavy-tailed Wigner matrices as well as the associated sample covariance matrices having entry-wise regularly varying tail distributions with parameter $0<α<4$. Our analysis extends results in the previous literature for the corresponding random matrices with independent entries above the diagonal, by allowing for m-dependence between the entries of a given matrix. We prove that the limiting point process of extreme eigenvalues is a Poisson cluster process.
This paper deals with symmetric random matrices whose upper diagonal entries are obtained from a linear random field with heavy tailed noise. It is shown that the maximum eigenvalue and the spectral radius of such a random matrix with dependent entries converge to the Frechét distribution after appropriate scaling. This extends a seminal result of Soshnikov(2004) when the tail index is strictly less than one.
We provide some asymptotic theory for the largest eigenvalues of a sample covariance matrix of a p-dimensional time series where the dimension p = p_n converges to infinity when the sample size n increases. We give a short overview of the literature on the topic both in the light- and heavy-tailed cases when the data have finite (infinite) fourth moment, respectively. Our main focus is on the heavytailed case. In this case, one has a theory for the point process of the normalized eigenvalues of the sample covariance matrix in the iid case but also when rows and columns of the data are linearly…
We consider a multivariate heavy-tailed stochastic volatility model and analyze the large-sample behavior of its sample covariance matrix. We study the limiting behavior of its entries in the infinite-variance case and derive results for the ordered eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors. Essentially, we consider two different cases where the tail behavior either stems from the i.i.d. innovations of the process or from its volatility sequence. In both cases, we make use of a large deviations technique for regularly varying time series to derive multivariate $α$-stable limit distributions o…
We study heavy-tailed Hermitian random matrices that are unitarily invariant. The invariance implies that the eigenvalue and eigenvector statistics are decoupled. The motivating question has been whether a freely stable random matrix has stable eigenvalue statistics for the largest eigenvalues in the tail. We investigate this question through the use of both numerical and analytical means, the latter of which makes use of the supersymmetry method. A surprising behaviour is uncovered in that a freely stable random matrix does not necessarily yield stable statistics and if it does then it might …
We study the statistics of the largest eigenvalues of $p \times p$ sample covariance matrices $Σ_{p,n} = M_{p,n}M_{p,n}^{*}$ when the entries of the $p \times n$ matrix $M_{p,n}$ are sparse and have a distribution with tail $t^{-α}$, $α>0$. On average the number of nonzero entries of $M_{p,n}$ is of order $n^{μ+1}$, $0 \leq μ\leq 1$. We prove that in the large $n$ limit, the largest eigenvalues are Poissonian if $α<2(1+μ^{-1})$ and converge to a constant in the case $α>2(1+μ^{-1})$. We also extend the results of Benaych-Georges and Peche [7] in the Hermitian case, removing restrictions on the …

We study the $k$-largest eigenvalues of heavy-tailed sample covariance matrices of the form $\bX\bX^\T$ in an asymptotic framework, where the dimension of the data and the sample size tend to infinity. To this end, we assume that the rows of $\bX$ are given by independent copies of some stationary process with regularly varying marginals with index $α\in(0,2)$ satisfying large deviation and mixing conditions. We apply these general results to stochastic volatility and GARCH processes.
We consider some random band matrices with band-width $N^μ$ whose entries are independent random variables with distribution tail in $x^{-α}$. We consider the largest eigenvalues and the associated eigenvectors and prove the following phase transition. On the one hand, when $α\textless{}2(1+μ^{-1})$, the largest eigenvalues have order $N^{(1+μ)/α}$, are asymptotically distributed as a Poisson process and their associated eigenvectors are essentially carried by two coordinates (this phenomenon has already been remarked by Soshnikov for full matrices with heavy tailed entries,i.e. when $α\textle…
We prove that the eigenvectors associated to small enough eigenvalues of an heavy-tailed symmetric random matrix are delocalized with probability tending to one as the size of the matrix grows to infinity. The delocalization is measured thanks to a simple criterion related to the inverse participation ratio which computes an average ratio of L4 and L2-norms of vectors. In contrast, as a consequence of a previous result, for random matrices with sufficiently heavy tails, the eigenvectors associated to large enough eigenvalues are localized according to the same criterion. The proof is based on …
We consider the eigenvalues of sample covariance matrices of the form $\mathcal{Q}=(Σ^{1/2}X)(Σ^{1/2}X)^*$. The sample $X$ is an $M\times N$ rectangular random matrix with real independent entries and the population covariance matrix $Σ$ is a positive definite diagonal matrix independent of $X$. Assuming that the limiting spectral density of $Σ$ exhibits convex decay at the right edge of the spectrum, in the limit $M, N \to \infty$ with $N/M \to d\in(0,\infty)$, we find a certain threshold $d_+$ such that for $d>d_+$ the limiting spectral distribution of $\mathcal{Q}$ also exhibits convex deca…
We prove that the largest and smallest root in modulus of random Kac polynomials have a non-universal behavior. They do not converge towards the edge of the support of the limiting distribution of the zeros. This non-universality is surprising as the large deviation principle for the empirical measure is universal. This is in sharp contrast with random matrix theory where the large deviation principle is non-universal but the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue are universal. We show that the modulus of the largest zero is heavy tailed, with a number of finite moments bounded from above by …
Let $ \bbB_n =\frac{1}{n}(\bbR_n + \bbT^{1/2}_n \bbX_n)(\bbR_n + \bbT^{1/2}_n \bbX_n)^* $, where $ \bbX_n $ is a $ p \times n $ matrix with independent standardized random variables, $ \bbR_n $ is a $ p \times n $ non-random matrix and $ \bbT_{n} $ is a $ p \times p $ non-random, nonnegative definite Hermitian matrix. The matrix $\bbB_n$ is referred to as the information-plus-noise type matrix, where $\bbR_n$ contains the information and $\bbT^{1/2}_n \bbX_n$ is the noise matrix with the covariance matrix $\bbT_{n} $. It is known that, as $ n \to \infty $, if $ p/n $ converges to a positive nu…
We prove a functional central limit theorem for partial sums of symmetric stationary long range dependent heavy tailed infinitely divisible processes with a certain type of negative dependence. Previously only positive dependence could be treated. The negative dependence involves cancellations of the Gaussian second order. This leads to new types of limiting processes involving stable random measures, due to heavy tails, Mittag-Leffler processes, due to long memory, and Brownian motions, due to the Gaussian second order cancellations.
Let $X_N$ be an $N\ts N$ random symmetric matrix with independent equidistributed entries. If the law $P$ of the entries has a finite second moment, it was shown by Wigner \cite{wigner} that the empirical distribution of the eigenvalues of $X_N$, once renormalized by $\sqrt{N}$, converges almost surely and in expectation to the so-called semicircular distribution as $N$ goes to infinity. In this paper we study the same question when $P$ is in the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable law. We prove that if we renormalize the eigenvalues by a constant $a_N$ of order $N^{\frac{1}α}$, the correspo…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the appropriately scaled and possibly perturbed spectral measure $μ$ of large random real symmetric matrices with heavy tailed entries. Specifically, consider the N by N symmetric matrix $Y_N^σ$ whose (i,j) entry is $σ(i/N,j/N)X_{ij}$ where $(X_{ij}, 0<i<j+1<\infty)$ is an infinite array of i.i.d real variables with common distribution in the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable law, $0<α<2$, and $σ$ is a deterministic function. For a random diagonal $D_N$ independent of $Y_N^σ$ and with appropriate rescaling $a_N$, we prove that the distribution $μ$ of $a_…
We consider the convergence of the eigenvalues to the support of the equilibrium measure in the $β$ ensemble models under a critical condition. We show a phase transition phenomenon, namely that, with probability one, all eigenvalues will fall in the support of the limiting spectral measure when $β>1$, whereas this fails when $β<1$.
We show that the limiting eigenvalue distribution of random symmetric Toeplitz matrices is absolutely continuous with density bounded by 8, partially answering a question of Bryc, Dembo and Jiang (2006). The main tool used in the proof is a spectral averaging technique from the theory of random Schrödinger operators. The similar question for Hankel matrices remains open.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the principal eigenvector and eigenvalue of the random conductance Laplacian in a large domain of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ ($d\geq 2$) with zero Dirichlet condition. We assume that the conductances $w$ are positive i.i.d. random variables, which fulfill certain regularity assumptions near zero. If $γ=\sup \{ q\geq 0\colon \mathbb{E} [w^{-q}]<\infty \}<1/4$, then we show that for almost every environment the principal Dirichlet eigenvector asymptotically concentrates in a single site and the corresponding eigenvalue scales subdiffusively. The threshold $γ_{\rm c} = 1/4…
This note studies the asymptotic properties of the variable $$Z_d:=\frac{X_1}{d}|\{X_1+X_2=d\},$$ as $d\to \infty$. Here $X_1$ and $X_2$ are non-negative i.i.d. variables with a common twice differentiable density function $f$. General results concerning the distributional limits of $Z_d$ are discussed with various examples. Eventual log-convexity or log-concavity of $f$ turns out to be the key ingredient that determines how the variable $Z_d$ behaves. As a consequence, two surprising discoveries are presented: Firstly, it is noted that the distributional limit is not strictly determined by th…
We show central limit theorems (CLT) for the Stieltjes transforms or more general analytic functions of symmetric matrices with independent heavy tailed entries, including entries in the domain of attraction of $α$-stable laws and entries with moments exploding with the dimension, as in the adjacency matrices of Erdös-Rényi graphs. For the second model, we also prove a central limit theorem of the moments of its empirical eigenvalues distribution. The limit laws are Gaussian, but unlike to the case of standard Wigner matrices, the normalization is the one of the classical CLT for independent r…
In this work we provide an estimator for the covariance matrix of a heavy-tailed multivariate distributionWe prove that the proposed estimator $\widehat{\mathbf{S}}$ admits an \textit{affine-invariant} bound of the form \[(1-\varepsilon) \mathbf{S} \preccurlyeq \widehat{\mathbf{S}} \preccurlyeq (1+\varepsilon) \mathbf{S}\]in high probability, where $\mathbf{S}$ is the unknown covariance matrix, and $\preccurlyeq$ is the positive semidefinite order on symmetric matrices. The result only requires the existence of fourth-order moments, and allows for $\varepsilon = O(\sqrt{κ^4 d\log(d/δ)/n})$ whe…
We consider a $p$-dimensional time series where the dimension $p$ increases with the sample size $n$. The resulting data matrix $X$ follows a stochastic volatility model: each entry consists of a positive random volatility term multiplied by an independent noise term. The volatility multipliers introduce dependence in each row and across the rows. We study the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the sample covariance matrix $XX'$ under a regular variation assumption on the noise. In particular, we prove Poisson convergence for the point process of the centered and normal…
Limiting distributions of the rightmost eigenvalue of the truncated circular Unitary ensemble across all truncation regimes

One-rank perturbations of Wigner matrices have been closely studied: let $P=\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}A+θvv^T$ with $A=(a_{ij})_{1 \leq i,j \leq n} \in \mathbb{R}^{n \times n}$ symmetric, $(a_{ij})_{1 \leq i \leq j \leq n}$ i.i.d. with centered standard normal distributions, and $θ>0, v \in \mathbb{S}^{n-1}.$ It is well known $λ_1(P),$ the largest eigenvalue of $P,$ has a phase transition at $θ_0=1:$ when $θ\leq 1,$ $λ_1(P) \xrightarrow[]{a.s.} 2,$ whereas for $θ> 1,$ $λ_1(P) \xrightarrow[]{a.s.} θ+θ^{-1}.$ Under more general conditions, the limiting behavior of $λ_1(P),$ appropriately normalized, has…
We determine the limiting distribution of the largest eigenvalue of products from the $β$-Laguerre ensemble. This limiting distribution is given by a Tracy-Widom law with parameter $β_0>0$ depending on the ratio of the parameters of the two matrices involved.
We consider the limiting location and limiting distribution of the largest eigenvalue in real symmetric ($β$ = 1), Hermitian ($β$ = 2), and Hermitian self-dual ($β$ = 4) random matrix models with rank 1 external source. They are analyzed in a uniform way by a contour integral representation of the joint probability density function of eigenvalues. Assuming the one-band condition and certain regularities of the potential function, we obtain the limiting location of the largest eigenvalue when the nonzero eigenvalue of the external source matrix is not the critical value, and further obtain the …
We consider the random reversible Markov kernel K obtained by assigning i.i.d. nonnegative weights to the edges of the complete graph over n vertices and normalizing by the corresponding row sum. The weights are assumed to be in the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable law, $α\in(0,2)$. When $1\leqα<2$, we show that for a suitable regularly varying sequence $κ_n$ of index $1-1/α$, the limiting spectral distribution $μ_α$ of $κ_nK$ coincides with the one of the random symmetric matrix of the un-normalized weights (Lévy matrix with i.i.d. entries). In contrast, when $0<α<1$, we show that the em…
This paper is to investigate the spectral properties of sample covariance matrices under a more general population. We consider a class of matrices of the form $\mathbf S_n=\frac1n\mathbf B_n\mathbf X_n\mathbf X_n^*\mathbf B_n^*$, where $\mathbf B_n$ is a $p\times m$ non-random matrix and $\mathbf X_n$ is an $m\times n$ matrix consisting of i.i.d standard complex entries. $p/n\to c\in (0,\infty)$ as $n\to \infty$ while $m$ can be arbitrary. We proved that under some mild assumptions, with probability 1, there will be no eigenvalues in any closed interval contained in an open interval outside t…
In this paper we analyze a branching process with immigration defined recursively by $X_t=θ_t\circ X_{t-1}+B_t$ for a sequence $(B_t)$ of i.i.d. random variables and random mappings $ θ_t\circ x:=θ_t(x)=\sum_{i=1}^xA_i^{(t)}, $ with $(A_i^{(t)})_{i\in \mathbb{N}_0}$ being a sequence of $\mathbb{N}_0$-valued i.i.d. random variables independent of $B_t$. We assume that one of generic variables $A$ and $B$ has a regularly varying tail distribution. We identify the tail behaviour of the distribution of the stationary solution $X_t$. We also prove CLT for the partial sums that could be further gene…
In this paper we analyze the covariance kernel of the Gaussian process that arises as the limit of fluctuations of linear spectral statistics for Wigner matrices with a few moments. More precisely, the process we study here corresponds to Hermitian matrices with independent entries that have $α$ moments for $2<α< 4$. We obtain a closed form $α$-dependent expression for the covariance of the limiting process resulting from fluctuations of the Stieltjes transform by explicitly integrating the known double Laplace transform integral formula obtained in the literature. We then express the covarian…
The directed polymer model at intermediate disorder regime was introduced by Alberts-Khanin-Quastel~\cite{AKQ12}. It was proved that at inverse temperature $βn^{-γ}$ with $γ=1/4$ the partition function, centered appropriately, converges in distribution and the limit is given in terms of the solution of the stochastic heat equation. This result was obtained under the assumption that the disorder variables posses exponential moments, but its universality was also conjectured under the assumption of six moments. We show that this conjecture is valid and we further extend it by exhibiting classes …
This paper investigates the strong limiting behavior of the eigenvalues of the class of matrices $\frac1N(D_n\circ X_n)(D_n\circ X_n)^*$, studied in Girko 2001. Here, $X_n=(x_{ij})$ is an $n\times N$ random matrix consisting of independent complex standardized random variables, $D_n=(d_{ij})$, $n\times N$, has nonnegative entries, and $\circ$ denotes Hadamard (componentwise) product. Results are obtained under assumptions on the entries of $X_n$ and $D_n$ which are different from those in Girko (2001), which include a Lindeberg condition on the entries of $D_n\circ X_n$, as well as a bound on …
We consider Schrödinger operator with random decaying potential on $\ell^2 ({\bf Z}^d)$ and showed that, (i) IDS coincides with that of free Laplacian in general cases, and (ii) the set of extremal eigenvalues, after rescaling, converges to a inhomogeneous Poisson process, under certain condition on the single-site distribution, and (iii) there are "border-line" cases, such that we have Poisson statistics in the sense of (ii) above if the potential does not decay, while we do not if the potential does decay.
We review the application of the notion of local convergence on locally finite randomly rooted graphs, known as Benjamini-Schramm convergence, to the calculation of the global eigenvalue density of random matrices from the beta-Gaussian and beta-Laguerre ensembles. By regarding a random matrix as the weighted adjacency matrix of a graph, and choosing the root of such a graph with uniform probability, one can use the Benjamini-Schramm limit to produce the spectral measure of the adjacency operator of the limiting graph. We illustrate how the Wigner semicircle law and the Marchenko-Pastur law ar…
We study the asymptotic behavior of permanents of $n \times n$ random matrices $A$ with positive entries. We assume that $A$ has either i.i.d. entries or is a symmetric matrix with the i.i.d. upper triangle. Under the assumption that elements have power law decaying tails, we prove a strong law of large numbers for $\log \perm A$. We calculate the values of the limit $\lim_{n \to \infty}\frac{\log \perm A}{n \log n}$ in terms of the exponent of the power law distribution decay, and observe a first order phase transition in the limit as the mean becomes infinite. The methods extend to a wide cl…
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of spiked perturbations of Wigner matrices when the dimension goes to infinity. The entries of the Hermitian Wigner matrix have a distribution which is symmetric and satisfies a Poincaré inequality. The perturbation matrix is a deterministic Hermitian matrix whose spectral measure converges to some probability measure with compact support. We assume that this perturbation matrix has a fixed number of fixed eigenvalues (spikes) outside the support of its limiting spectral measure whereas the distance between the other eigenvalues and thi…
We study the spectral measure of large Euclidean random matrices. The entries of these matrices are determined by the relative position of $n$ random points in a compact set $Ω_n$ of $\R^d$. Under various assumptions we establish the almost sure convergence of the limiting spectral measure as the number of points goes to infinity. The moments of the limiting distribution are computed, and we prove that the limit of this limiting distribution as the density of points goes to infinity has a nice expression. We apply our results to the adjacency matrix of the geometric graph.
We consider quadratic Weyl sums $S_N(x;α,β)=\sum_{n=1}^N \exp\!\left[2πi\left( \left(\tfrac{1}{2}n^2+βn\right)\!x+αn\right)\right]$ for $(α,β)\in\mathbb{Q}^2$, where $x\in\mathbb{R}$ is randomly distributed according to a probability measure absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. We prove that the limiting distribution in the complex plane of $\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}S_N(x;α,β)$ as $N\to\infty$ is either heavy tailed or compactly supported, depending solely on $α,β$. In the heavy tailed case, the probability (according to the limiting distribution) of landing outside a ball of r…
We consider the eigenvectors of symmetric matrices with independent heavy tailed entries, such as matrices with entries in the domain of attraction of $α$-stable laws, or adjacencymatrices of Erdos-Renyi graphs. We denote by $U=[u_{ij}]$ the eigenvectors matrix (corresponding to increasing eigenvalues) and prove that the bivariate process $$B^n_{s,t}:=n^{-1/2}\sum_{1\le i\le ns, 1\le j\le nt}(|u_{ij}|^2 -n^{-1}),$$ indexed by $s,t\in [0,1]$, converges in law to a non trivial Gaussian process. An interesting part of this result is the $n^{-1/2}$ rescaling, proving that from this point of view, …
We compute the limiting eigenvalue statistics at the edge of the spectrum of large Hermitian random matrices perturbed by the addition of small rank deterministic matrices. To be more precise, we consider random Hermitian matrices with independent Gaussian entries $M_{ij}, i\leq j$ with various expectations. We prove that the largest eigenvalue of such random matrices exhibits, in the large $N$ limit, various limiting distributions depending on both the eigenvalues of the matrix $(\mathbb{E}M_{ij})_{i,j=1}^N$ and its rank.
We studied the universality of Wishart ensembles whose covariance matrix has 2 distinct eigenvalues. We studied the asymptotic limit when the number of both eigenvalues goes to infinity and obtained universality results. In this case, the limiting eigenvalue distribution can be supported on 1 or 2 disjoint intervals. We obtained a necessary and sufficient condition on the parameters such that the limiting distribution is supported on 2 disjoint intervals and have computed the eigenvalue density in the limit. Furthermore, by using Riemann-Hilbert analysis, we have shown that under proper rescal…
We study a continuous-time branching random walk on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$, $d\in \mathbb{N}$, with a single source of branching, that is the lattice point where the birth and death of particles can occur. The random walk is assumed to be homogeneous, symmetric and irreducible but, in contrast to previous investigations, the random walk transition intensities $a(x,y)$ decrease as $|y-x|^{-(d+α)}$ for $|y-x|\to \infty$, where $α\in(0,2)$, that leads to an infinite variance of the random walk jumps. The~mechanism of the birth and death of particles at the source is governed by a continuous…
We consider the ensemble of $N\times N$ real random symmetric matrices $H_N^{(R)}$ obtained from the determinant form of the Ihara zeta function associated to random graphs $Γ_N^{(R)}$ of the long-range percolation radius model with the edge probability determined by a function $ϕ(t)$. We show that the normalized eigenvalue counting function of $H_N^{( R)}$ weakly converges in average as $N,R\to\infty$, $R=o(N)$ to a unique measure that depends on the limiting average vertex degree of $Γ_N^{(R)}$ given by $ϕ_1 = \int ϕ(t) dt$. This measure converges in the limit of infinite $ϕ_1$ to a shift of…
We study the probability distribution function (PDF) of the smallest eigenvalue of Laguerre-Wishart matrices $W = X^\dagger X$ where $X$ is a random $M \times N$ ($M \geq N$) matrix, with complex Gaussian independent entries. We compute this PDF in terms of semi-classical orthogonal polynomials, which are deformations of Laguerre polynomials. By analyzing these polynomials, and their associated recurrence relations, in the limit of large $N$, large $M$ with $M/N \to 1$ -- i.e. for quasi-square large matrices $X$ -- we show that this PDF, in the hard edge limit, can be expressed in terms of the…
Let (X_{jk})_{j,k>=1} be i.i.d. complex random variables such that |X_{jk}| is in the domain of attraction of an alpha-stable law, with 0< alpha <2. Our main result is a heavy tailed counterpart of Girko's circular law. Namely, under some additional smoothness assumptions on the law of X_{jk}, we prove that there exists a deterministic sequence a_n ~ n^{1/alpha} and a probability measure mu_alpha on C depending only on alpha such that with probability one, the empirical distribution of the eigenvalues of the rescaled matrix a_n^{-1} (X_{jk})_{1<=j,k<=n} converges weakly to mu_alpha as n tends …
We establish a new class of functional central limit theorems for partial sum of certain symmetric stationary infinitely divisible processes with regularly varying Lévy measures. The limit process is a new class of symmetric stable self-similar processes with stationary increments that coincides on a part of its parameter space with a previously described process. The normalizing sequence and the limiting process are determined by the ergodic-theoretical properties of the flow underlying the integral representation of the process. These properties can be interpreted as determining how long the…
