This paper is to investigate the spectral properties of sample covariance matrices under a more general population. We consider a class of matrices of the form $\mathbf S_n=\frac1n\mathbf B_n\mathbf X_n\mathbf X_n^*\mathbf B_n^*$, where $\mathbf B_n$ is a $p\times m$ non-random matrix and $\mathbf X_n$ is an $m\times n$ matrix consisting of i.i.d standard complex entries. $p/n\to c\in (0,\infty)$ as $n\to \infty$ while $m$ can be arbitrary. We proved that under some mild assumptions, with probability 1, there will be no eigenvalues in any closed interval contained in an open interval outside the supports of the limiting distribution $F_{c_n,H_n}$, for all sufficiently large $n$. An extension of Bai-Yin law is also obtained.
We obtain the limiting spectral distribution for large sample covariance matrices associated with random vectors having graph-dependent entries under the assumption that the interdependence among the entries grows with the sample size n. Our results are tight. In particular, they give necessary and sufficient conditions for the Marchenko-Pastur theorem for sample covariance matrices with m-dependent orthonormal elements when m = o(n).
When some eigenvalues of a spiked multiplicative resp. additive deformation model of a Hermitian Wigner matrix resp. a sample covariance matrix separate from the bulk, we study how the corresponding eigenvectors project onto those of the perturbation. We point out that the inverse of the subordination function relative to the free additive resp. multiplicative convolution plays an important part in the asymptotic behavior.
We consider a multivariate heavy-tailed stochastic volatility model and analyze the large-sample behavior of its sample covariance matrix. We study the limiting behavior of its entries in the infinite-variance case and derive results for the ordered eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors. Essentially, we consider two different cases where the tail behavior either stems from the i.i.d. innovations of the process or from its volatility sequence. In both cases, we make use of a large deviations technique for regularly varying time series to derive multivariate $α$-stable limit distributions o…
We establish that the limiting spectral distribution of a block-rescaled empirical covariance matrix is an arcsine law when the ratio between the dimension and the underlying sample size converges to 1 and when the samples corresponding to each block are independent. We further propose a conjecture for the cases where the latter ratio converges to a constant in the unit interval.
We compute the limiting distributions of the largest eigenvalue of a complex Gaussian sample covariance matrix when both the number of samples and the number of variables in each sample become large. When all but finitely many, say $r$, eigenvalues of the covariance matrix are the same, the dependence of the limiting distribution of the largest eigenvalue of the sample covariance matrix on those distinguished $r$ eigenvalues of the covariance matrix is completely characterized in terms of an infinite sequence of new distribution functions that generalize the Tracy-Widom distributions of the ra…
We investigate the spectral distribution of large sample covariance matrices with independent columns and entries in the columns that stem from Markov chains. We characterize the limiting spectral densities by their moments. Correspondingly, the proof is based on a moment method.
Consider the random matrix $Σ= D^{1/2} X \widetilde D^{1/2}$ where $D$ and $\widetilde D$ are deterministic Hermitian nonnegative matrices with respective dimensions $N \times N$ and $n \times n$, and where $X$ is a random matrix with independent and identically distributed centered elements with variance $1/n$. Assume that the dimensions $N$ and $n$ grow to infinity at the same pace, and that the spectral measures of $D$ and $\widetilde D$ converge as $N,n \to\infty$ towards two probability measures. Then it is known that the spectral measure of $ΣΣ^*$ converges towards a probability measure …
In a recent study of large non-null sample covariance matrices, a new sequence of functions generalizing the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution of random matrix theory was obtained. This paper derives Painlevé formulas of these functions and use them to prove that they are indeed distribution functions. Applications of these new distribution functions to last passage percolation, queues in tandem and totally asymmetric simple exclusion process are also discussed. As a part of the proof, a representation of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle in terms of an operator on a discrete set is present…
Suppose $X_p$ is a real $p \times n$ matrix with independent entries and consider the (unscaled) sample covariance matrix $S_p=X_pX_p^T$. The Marchenko-Pastur law was discovered as the limit of the bulk distribution of the sample covariance matrix in 1967. There have been extensions of this result in several directions. In this paper, we consider an extension that handles several of the existing ones as well as generates new results. We show that under suitable assumptions on the entries of $X_p$, the limiting spectral distribution exists in probability or almost surely. The moments are descri…
Let $ \bbB_n =\frac{1}{n}(\bbR_n + \bbT^{1/2}_n \bbX_n)(\bbR_n + \bbT^{1/2}_n \bbX_n)^* $, where $ \bbX_n $ is a $ p \times n $ matrix with independent standardized random variables, $ \bbR_n $ is a $ p \times n $ non-random matrix and $ \bbT_{n} $ is a $ p \times p $ non-random, nonnegative definite Hermitian matrix. The matrix $\bbB_n$ is referred to as the information-plus-noise type matrix, where $\bbR_n$ contains the information and $\bbT^{1/2}_n \bbX_n$ is the noise matrix with the covariance matrix $\bbT_{n} $. It is known that, as $ n \to \infty $, if $ p/n $ converges to a positive nu…
We derive the universality principle for empirical spectral distributions of sample covariance matrices and their Stieltjes transforms. This principle states the following. Suppose quadratic forms of random vectors $y_p$ in $R^p$ satisfy a weak law of large numbers and the sample size grows at the same rate as $p$. Then the limiting spectral distribution of corresponding sample covariance matrices is the same as in the case with conditionally Gaussian $y_p$. This result is generalized for $m$-dependent martingale difference sequences and $m$-dependent linear processes.
In this article, we establish a limiting distribution for eigenvalues of a class of auto-covariance matrices. The same distribution has been found in the literature for a regularized version of these auto-covariance matrices. The original non-regularized auto-covariance matrices are non invertible which introduce supplementary diffculties for the study of their eigenvalues through Girko's Hermitization scheme. The key result in this paper is a new polynomial lower bound for the least singular value of the resolvent matrices associated to a rank-defective quadratic function of a random matrix w…
We are concerned with the behavior of the eigenvalues of renormalized sample covariance matrices of the form C_n=\sqrt{\frac{n}{p}}\left(\frac{1}{n}A_{p}^{1/2}X_{n}B_{n}X_{n}^{*}A_{p}^{1/2}-\frac{1}{n}\tr(B_{n})A_{p}\right) as $p,n\to \infty$ and $p/n\to 0$, where $X_{n}$ is a $p\times n$ matrix with i.i.d. real or complex valued entries $X_{ij}$ satisfying $E(X_{ij})=0$, $E|X_{ij}|^2=1$ and having finite fourth moment. $A_{p}^{1/2}$ is a square-root of the nonnegative definite Hermitian matrix $A_{p}$, and $B_{n}$ is an $n\times n$ nonnegative definite Hermitian matrix. We show that the empir…
This note presents some central limit theorems for the eigenvalue counting function of Wigner matrices in the form of suitable translations of results by Gustavsson and O'Rourke on the limiting behavior of eigenvalues inside the bulk of the semicircle law for Gaussian matrices. The theorems are then extended to large families of Wigner matrices by the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem. Similar results are developed for covariance matrices.
In this paper we analyze the covariance kernel of the Gaussian process that arises as the limit of fluctuations of linear spectral statistics for Wigner matrices with a few moments. More precisely, the process we study here corresponds to Hermitian matrices with independent entries that have $α$ moments for $2<α< 4$. We obtain a closed form $α$-dependent expression for the covariance of the limiting process resulting from fluctuations of the Stieltjes transform by explicitly integrating the known double Laplace transform integral formula obtained in the literature. We then express the covarian…
We consider a diffusion process with coefficients that are periodic outside of an 'interface region' of finite thickness. The question investigated in the articles [1,2] is the limiting long time / large scale behaviour of such a process under diffusive rescaling. It is clear that outside of the interface, the limiting process must behave like Brownian motion, with diffusion matrices given by the standard theory of homogenization. The interesting behaviour therefore occurs on the interface. Our main result is that the limiting process is a semimartingale whose bounded variation part is proport…
We consider the eigenvalues of sample covariance matrices of the form $\mathcal{Q}=(Σ^{1/2}X)(Σ^{1/2}X)^*$. The sample $X$ is an $M\times N$ rectangular random matrix with real independent entries and the population covariance matrix $Σ$ is a positive definite diagonal matrix independent of $X$. Assuming that the limiting spectral density of $Σ$ exhibits convex decay at the right edge of the spectrum, in the limit $M, N \to \infty$ with $N/M \to d\in(0,\infty)$, we find a certain threshold $d_+$ such that for $d>d_+$ the limiting spectral distribution of $\mathcal{Q}$ also exhibits convex deca…
A consistent kernel estimator of the limiting spectral distribution of general sample covariance matrices was introduced in Jing, Pan, Shao and Zhou (2010). The central limit theorem of the kernel estimator is proved in this paper.
We consider an Information-Plus-Noise type matrix where the Information matrix is a spiked matrix. When some eigenvalues of the random matrix separate from the bulk, we study how the corresponding eigenvectors project onto those of the spikes. Note that, in an Appendix, we present alternative versions of the earlier results of Bai and Silverstein about the lack of eigenvalues outside the support of the deterministic equivalent measure and of Capitaine about the exact separation phenomenon, where we remove some technical assumptions.
Let \{$X_{ij}$\}, $i,j=...,$ be a double array of i.i.d. complex random variables with $EX_{11}=0,E|X_{11}|^2=1$ and $E|X_{11}|^4<\infty$, and let $A_n=\frac{1}{N}T_n^{{1}/{2}}X_nX_n^*T_n^{{1}/{2}}$, where $T_n^{{1}/{2}}$ is the square root of a nonnegative definite matrix $T_n$ and $X_n$ is the $n\times N$ matrix of the upper-left corner of the double array. The matrix $A_n$ can be considered as a sample covariance matrix of an i.i.d. sample from a population with mean zero and covariance matrix $T_n$, or as a multivariate $F$ matrix if $T_n$ is the inverse of another sample covariance matrix…
In this paper, we investigate some geometric functionals for band limited Gaussian and isotropic spherical random fields in dimension 2. In particular, we focus on the area of excursion sets, providing its behavior in the high energy limit. Our result is based on Wiener chaos expansion for non linear transform of Gaussian fields and on an explicit derivation on the high-frequency limit of the covariance function of the field. As a simple corollary we establish also the Central Limit Theorem for the excursion area.
Let $(σ_N^{(i)})_{i \in I}$ be a family of symmetric permutations of the entries of a Wigner matrix $\mathbf{W}_N$. We characterize the limiting traffic distribution of the corresponding family of dependent Wigner matrices $(\mathbf{W}_N^{σ_N^{(i)}})_{i \in I}$ in terms of the geometry of the permutations. We also consider the analogous problem for the limiting joint distribution of $(\mathbf{W}_N^{σ_N^{(i)}})_{i \in I}$. In particular, we obtain a description in terms of semicircular families with general covariance structures. As a special case, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions …
In a paper that appeared in 2010, C. Tone proved a multivariate central limit theorem for some strictly stationary random fields of random vectors satisfying certain mixing conditions. The "normalization" of a given "partial sum" (or "block sum") involved matrix multiplication by a "standard -1/2 power" of its covariance matrix (a symmetric, positive definite matrix), and the limiting multivariate normal distribution had the identity matrix as its covariance matrix. The mixing assumptions in Tone's result implicitly imposed an upper bound on the ratios of the largest to the smallest eigenvalue…
In this article we show the existence of limiting spectral distribution of a symmetric random matrix whose entries come from a stationary Gaussian process with covariances satisfying a summability condition. We provide an explicit description of the moments of the limiting measure. We also show that in some special cases the Gaussian assumption can be relaxed. The description of the limiting measure can also be made via its Stieltjes transform which is characterized as the solution of a functional equation. In two special cases, we get a description of the limiting measure - one as a free prod…
We study the limiting spectral distribution of sample covariance matrices $XX^T$, where $X$ are $p\times n$ random matrices with correlated entries, for the cases $p/n\to y\in [0,\infty)$. If $y>0$, we obtain the Marčenko-Pastur distribution and in the case $y=0$ the semicircle distribution (after appropriate rescaling). The entries we consider are Curie-Weiss spins, which are correlated random signs, where the degree of the correlation is governed by an inverse temperature $β>0$. The model exhibits a phase transition at $β=1$. The correlation between any two entries decays at a rate of $O(np)…
We consider spectral properties of sparse sample covariance matrices, which includes biadjacency matrices of the bipartite Erdős-Rényi graph model. We prove a local law for the eigenvalue density up to the upper spectral edge. Under a suitable condition on the sparsity, we also prove that the limiting distribution of the rescaled, shifted extremal eigenvalues is given by the GOE Tracy-Widom law with an explicit formula on the deterministic shift of the spectral edge. For the biadjacency matrix of an Erdős-Rényi graph with two vertex sets of comparable sizes $M$ and $N$, this establishes Tracy-…
We study the small-time fluctuations for diffusion processes which are conditioned by their initial and final positions, under the assumptions that the diffusivity has a sub-Riemannian structure and that the drift vector field lies in the span of the sub-Riemannian structure. In the case where the endpoints agree and the generator of the diffusion process is non-elliptic at that point, the deterministic Malliavin covariance matrix is always degenerate. We identify, after a suitable rescaling, another limiting Malliavin covariance matrix which is non-degenerate, and we show that, with the same …

It is clear that outside of the interface, the limiting process must behave like Brownian motion, with diffusion matrices given by the standard theory of homogenization. The interesting behavior therefore occurs on the interface. Our main result is that the limiting process is a semimartingale whose bounded variation part is proportional to t…
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of spiked perturbations of Wigner matrices when the dimension goes to infinity. The entries of the Hermitian Wigner matrix have a distribution which is symmetric and satisfies a Poincaré inequality. The perturbation matrix is a deterministic Hermitian matrix whose spectral measure converges to some probability measure with compact support. We assume that this perturbation matrix has a fixed number of fixed eigenvalues (spikes) outside the support of its limiting spectral measure whereas the distance between the other eigenvalues and thi…
The paper proves several limit theorems for linear eigenvalue statistics of overlapping Wigner and sample covariance matrices. It is shown that the covariance of the limiting multivariate Gaussian distribution is diagonalized by choosing the Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind as the basis for the test function space. The covariance of linear statistics for the Chebyshev polynomials of sufficiently high degree depends only on the first two moments of the matrix entries. Proofs are based on a graph-theoretic interpretation of the Chebyshev linear statistics as sums over non-backtracking cyc…
We study the renormalized real sample covariance matrix $H=X^TX/\sqrt{MN}-\sqrt{M/N}$ with $N/M\rightarrow0$ as $N, M\rightarrow \infty$ in this paper. And we always assume $M=M(N)$. Here $X=[X_{jk}]_{M\times N}$ is an $M\times N$ real random matrix with i.i.d entries, and we assume $\mathbb{E}|X_{11}|^{5+δ}<\infty$ with some small positive $δ$. The Stieltjes transform $m_N(z)=N^{-1}Tr(H-z)^{-1}$ and the linear eigenvalue statistics of $H$ are considered. We mainly focus on the asymptotic expansion of $\mathbb{E}\{m_N(z)\}$ in this paper. Then for some fine test function, a central limit theor…
Let $(\varepsilon_{t})_{t>0}$ be a sequence of independent real random vectors of $p$-dimension and let $X_T= \sum_{t=s+1}^{s+T}\varepsilon_t\varepsilon^T_{t-s}/T$ be the lag-$s$ ($s$ is a fixed positive integer) auto-covariance matrix of $\varepsilon_t$. Since $X_T$ is not symmetric, we consider its singular values, which are the square roots of the eigenvalues of $X_TX^T_T$. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the limiting behaviors of the eigenvalues of $X_TX^T_T$ in two aspects. First, we show that the empirical spectral distribution of its eigenvalues converges to a non…
Let $(\varepsilon_{t})_{t>0}$ be a sequence of independent real random vectors of $p$-dimension and let $X_T=\sum_{t=s+1}^{s+T}\varepsilon_t\varepsilon^T_{t-s}/T$ be the lag-$s$ ($s$ is a fixed positive integer) auto-covariance matrix of $\varepsilon_t$. This paper investigates the limiting behavior of the singular values of $X_T$ under the so-called {\em ultra-dimensional regime} where $p\to\infty$ and $T\to\infty$ in a related way such that $p/T\to 0$. First, we show that the singular value distribution of $X_T$ after a suitable normalization converges to a nonrandom limit $G$ (quarter law) …
We investigate the asymptotics of eigenvalues of sample covariance matrices associated with a class of non-independent Gaussian processes (separable and temporally stationary) under the Kolmogorov asymptotic regime. The limiting spectral distribution (LSD) is shown to depend explicitly on the Kolmogorov constant (a fixed limiting ratio of the sample size to the dimensionality) and parameters representing the spatio- and temporal- correlations. The Cauchy, M- and N-transforms from free harmonic analysis play key roles to this LSD calculation problem. The free multiplication law of free random v…
For symmetric random matrices with correlated entries, which are functions of independent random variables, we show that the asymptotic behavior of the empirical eigenvalue distribution can be obtained by analyzing a Gaussian matrix with the same covariance structure. This class contains both cases of short and long range dependent random fields. The technique is based on a blend of blocking procedure and Lindeberg's method. This method leads to a variety of interesting asymptotic results for matrices with dependent entries, including applications to linear processes as well as nonlinear Volte…
We consider large complex random sample covariance matrices obtained from "spiked populations", that is when the true covariance matrix is diagonal with all but finitely many eigenvalues equal to one. We investigate the limiting behavior of the largest eigenvalues when the population and the sample sizes both become large. Under some conditions on moments of the sample distribution, we prove that the asymptotic fluctuations of the largest eigenvalues are the same as for a complex Gaussian sample with the same true covariance. The real setting is also considered.
We characterize the limiting fluctuations of traces of several independent Wigner matrices and deterministic matrices under mild conditions. A CLT holds but in general the families are not asymptotically free of second order and the limiting covariance depends on more information on the deterministic matrices than their limiting *-distribution.
We study high-dimensional sample covariance matrices based on independent random vectors with missing coordinates. The presence of missing observations is common in modern applications such as climate studies or gene expression micro-arrays. A weak approximation on the spectral distribution in the "large dimension $d$ and large sample size $n$" asymptotics is derived for possibly different observation probabilities in the coordinates. The spectral distribution turns out to be strongly influenced by the missingness mechanism. In the null case under the missing at random scenario where each comp…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the appropriately scaled and possibly perturbed spectral measure $μ$ of large random real symmetric matrices with heavy tailed entries. Specifically, consider the N by N symmetric matrix $Y_N^σ$ whose (i,j) entry is $σ(i/N,j/N)X_{ij}$ where $(X_{ij}, 0<i<j+1<\infty)$ is an infinite array of i.i.d real variables with common distribution in the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable law, $0<α<2$, and $σ$ is a deterministic function. For a random diagonal $D_N$ independent of $Y_N^σ$ and with appropriate rescaling $a_N$, we prove that the distribution $μ$ of $a_…
This article provides a central limit theorem for a consistent estimator of population eigenvalues with large multiplicities based on sample covariance matrices. The focus is on limited sample size situations, whereby the number of available observations is known and comparable in magnitude to the observation dimension. An exact expression as well as an empirical, asymptotically accurate, approximation of the limiting variance is derived. Simulations are performed that corroborate the theoretical claims. A specific application to wireless sensor networks is developed.
For two decades, the Colless index has been the most frequently used statistic for assessing the balance of phylogenetic trees. In this article, this statistic is studied under the Yule and uniform model of phylogenetic trees. The main tool of analysis is a coupling argument with another well-known index called the Sackin statistic. Asymptotics for the mean, variance and covariance of these two statistics are obtained, as well as their limiting joint distribution for large phylogenies. Under the Yule model, the limiting distribution arises as a solution of a functional fixed point equation. Un…
The eigenvector empirical spectral distribution (VESD) is a useful tool in studying the limiting behavior of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of covariance matrices. In this paper, we study the convergence rate of the VESD of sample covariance matrices to the deformed Marčenko-Pastur (MP) distribution. Consider sample covariance matrices of the form $Σ^{1/2} X X^* Σ^{1/2}$, where $X=(x_{ij})$ is an $M\times N$ random matrix whose entries are independent random variables with mean zero and variance $N^{-1}$, and $Σ$ is a deterministic positive-definite matrix. We prove that the Kolmogorov distance …
Suppose $X$ and $Y$ are $p\times n$ matrices each with mean $0$, variance $1$ and where all moments of any order are uniformly bounded as $p,n \to \infty$. Moreover, the entries $(X_{ij}, Y_{ij})$ are independent across $i,j$ with a common correlation $ρ$. Let $C=n^{-1}XY^*$ be the sample cross-covariance matrix. We show that if $n, p\to \infty, p/n\to y\neq 0$, then $C$ converges in the algebraic sense and the limit moments depend only on $ρ$. Independent copies of such matrices with same $p$ but different $n$, say $\{n_l\}$, different correlations $\{ρ_l\}$, and different non-zero $y$'s, say…
We study two spiked models of random matrices under general frameworks corresponding respectively to additive deformation of random symmetric matrices and multiplicative perturbation of random covariance matrices. In both cases, the limiting spectral measure in the direction of an eigenvector of the perturbation leads to old and new results on the coordinates of eigenvectors.
We introduce a random matrix model where the entries are dependent across both rows and columns. More precisely, we investigate matrices of the form $\X=(X_{(i-1)n+t})_{it}\in\R^{p\times n}$ derived from a linear process $X_t=\sum_j c_j Z_{t-j}$, where the $\{Z_t\}$ are independent random variables with bounded fourth moments. We show that, when both $p$ and $n$ tend to infinity such that the ratio $p/n$ converges to a finite positive limit $y$, the empirical spectral distribution of $p^{-1}\X\X^{\T}$ converges almost surely to a deterministic measure. This limiting measure, which depends on $…
For sample covariance matrices with iid entries with sub-Gaussian tails, when both the number of samples and the number of variables become large and the ratio approaches to one, it is a well-known result of A. Soshnikov that the limiting distribution of the largest eigenvalue is same as the of Gaussian samples. In this paper, we extend this result to two cases. The first case is when the ratio approaches to an arbitrary finite value. The second case is when the ratio becomes infinity or arbitrarily small.
In this paper, we prove the edge universality of largest eigenvalues for separable covariance matrices of the form $\mathcal Q :=A^{1/2}XBX^*A^{1/2}$. Here $X=(x_{ij})$ is an $n\times N$ random matrix with $x_{ij}=N^{-1/2}q_{ij}$, where $q_{ij}$ are $i.i.d.$ random variables with zero mean and unit variance, and $A$ and $B$ are respectively $n \times n$ and $N\times N$ deterministic non-negative definite symmetric (or Hermitian) matrices. We consider the high-dimensional case, i.e. ${n}/{N}\to d \in (0, \infty)$ as $N\to \infty$. Assuming $\mathbb E q_{ij}^3=0$ and some mild conditions on $A$ …
We studied the universality of Wishart ensembles whose covariance matrix has 2 distinct eigenvalues. We studied the asymptotic limit when the number of both eigenvalues goes to infinity and obtained universality results. In this case, the limiting eigenvalue distribution can be supported on 1 or 2 disjoint intervals. We obtained a necessary and sufficient condition on the parameters such that the limiting distribution is supported on 2 disjoint intervals and have computed the eigenvalue density in the limit. Furthermore, by using Riemann-Hilbert analysis, we have shown that under proper rescal…
We study the zeroes of a family of random holomorphic functions on the unit disc, distinguished by their invariance with respect to the hyperbolic geometry. Our main finding is a transition in the limiting behaviour of the number of zeroes in a large hyperbolic disc. We find a normal distribution if the covariance decays faster than a certain critical value. In contrast, in the regime of 'long-range dependence' when the covariance decays slowly, the limiting distribution is skewed. For a closely related model we emphasise a link with Gaussian multiplicative chaos.
We study the minimal sample size N=N(n) that suffices to estimate the covariance matrix of an n-dimensional distribution by the sample covariance matrix in the operator norm, with an arbitrary fixed accuracy. We establish the optimal bound N=O(n) for every distribution whose k-dimensional marginals have uniformly bounded $2+\varepsilon$ moments outside the sphere of radius $O(\sqrt{k})$. In the specific case of log-concave distributions, this result provides an alternative approach to the Kannan-Lovasz-Simonovits problem, which was recently solved by Adamczak et al. [J. Amer. Math. Soc. 23 (20…
This paper is the first chapter of three of the author's undergraduate thesis. We study the random matrix ensemble of covariance matrices arising from random $(d_b, d_w)$-regular bipartite graphs on a set of $M$ black vertices and $N$ white vertices, for $d_b \gg \log^4 N$. We simultaneously prove that the Green's functions of these covariance matrices and the adjacency matrices of the underlying graphs agree with the corresponding limiting law (e.g. Marchenko-Pastur law for covariance matrices) down to the optimal scale. This is an improvement from the previously known mesoscopic results. We …
We consider sample covariance matrices $S_N=\frac{1}{p}Σ_N^{1/2}X_NX_N^* Σ_N^{1/2}$ where $X_N$ is a $N \times p$ real or complex matrix with i.i.d. entries with finite $12^{\rm th}$ moment and $Σ_N$ is a $N \times N$ positive definite matrix. In addition we assume that the spectral measure of $Σ_N$ almost surely converges to some limiting probability distribution as $N \to \infty$ and $p/N \to γ>0.$ We quantify the relationship between sample and population eigenvectors by studying the asymptotics of functionals of the type $\frac{1}{N} \text{Tr} (g(Σ_N) (S_N-zI)^{-1})),$ where $I$ is the ide…
