We study a continuous-time branching random walk on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$, $d\in \mathbb{N}$, with a single source of branching, that is the lattice point where the birth and death of particles can occur. The random walk is assumed to be homogeneous, symmetric and irreducible but, in contrast to previous investigations, the random walk transition intensities $a(x,y)$ decrease as $|y-x|^{-(d+α)}$ for $|y-x|\to \infty$, where $α\in(0,2)$, that leads to an infinite variance of the random walk jumps. The~mechanism of the birth and death of particles at the source is governed by a continuous-time Bienaymé-Galton-Watson branching process. The source intensity is characterized by a certain parameter $β$. We calculate the long-time asymptotic behaviour for all integer moments for the number of particles at each lattice point and for the total population size. With respect to the parameter $β$ a non-trivial critical point $β_c>0$ is found for every $d\geq 1$. In particular, if $β>β_{c}$ the evolutionary operator generated a behaviour of the first moment for the number of particles has a positive eigenvalue. The existence of a positive eigenvalue yields an exponential growth in $t$ of the particle numbers in the case $β>β_c$ called \emph{supercritical}. Classification of the branching random walk treated as \emph{subcritical} ($β<β_c$) or \emph{critical} ($β=β_c$) for the heavy-tailed random walk jumps is more complicated than for a random walk with a finite variance of jumps. We study the asymptotic behaviour of all integer moments of a number of particles at any point $y\in\mathbb{Z}^d$ and of the particle population on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ according to the ratio $d/α$.
Foss and Zachary (2003) and Foss, Palmowski and Zachary (2005) studied the probability of achieving a receding boundary on a time interval of random length by a random walk with a heavy-tailed jump distribution. They have proposed and developed a new approach that allows to generalise results of Asmussen (1998) onto the case of arbitrary stopping times and a wide class of nonlinear boundaries, and to obtain uniform results over all stopping times. In this paper, we consider a class of branching random walks with fading branching and obtain results on the tail asymptotics for the maximum of a b…
Consider a heavy-tailed branching process (denoted by $Z_{n}$) in random environments, under the condition which infers that $\mathbb{E}\log m(ξ_{0})=\infty$. We show that (1) there exists no proper $c_{n}$ such that $\{Z_{n}/c_{n}\}$ has a proper, non-degenerate limit, (2) normalized by a sequence of functions, a proper limit can be obtained, i.e., $y_{n}\left(\barξ,Z_{n}(\barξ)\right)$ converges almost surely to a random variable $Y(\barξ)$, where $Y\in(0,1)~η$-a.s., (3) finally, we give a necessary and sufficient conditions for the almost sure convergence of $\left\{\frac{U(\barξ,Z_{n}(\bar…
We develop a criterion for transience for a general model of branching Markov chains. In the case of multi-dimensional branching random walk in random environment (BRWRE) this criterion becomes explicit. In particular, we show that \emph{Condition L} of Comets and Popov is necessary and sufficient for transience as conjectured. Furthermore, the criterion applies to two important classes of branching random walks and implies that the critical branching random walk is transient resp. dies out locally.
Consider a branching system with particles moving according to an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process with drift $μ>0$ and branching according to a law in the domain of attraction of the $(1+β)$-stable distribution. The mean of the branching law is strictly larger than $1$ implying that the system is supercritical and the total number of particles grows exponentially at some rate $λ>0$. It is known that the system obeys a law of large numbers. In the paper we study its rate of convergence. We discover an interesting interplay between the branching rate $λ$ and the drift parameter $μ$. There are three r…
In this paper we analyze a branching process with immigration defined recursively by $X_t=θ_t\circ X_{t-1}+B_t$ for a sequence $(B_t)$ of i.i.d. random variables and random mappings $ θ_t\circ x:=θ_t(x)=\sum_{i=1}^xA_i^{(t)}, $ with $(A_i^{(t)})_{i\in \mathbb{N}_0}$ being a sequence of $\mathbb{N}_0$-valued i.i.d. random variables independent of $B_t$. We assume that one of generic variables $A$ and $B$ has a regularly varying tail distribution. We identify the tail behaviour of the distribution of the stationary solution $X_t$. We also prove CLT for the partial sums that could be further gene…
We study branching random walks in random i.i.d. environment in $\Z^d, d \geq 1$. For this model, the population size cannot decrease, and a natural definition of recurrence is introduced. We prove a dichotomy for recurrence/transience, depending only on the support of the environmental law. We give sufficient conditions for recurrence and for transience. In the recurrent case, we study the asymptotics of the tail of the distribution of the hitting times and prove a shape theorem for the set of lattice sites which are visited up to a large time.
Motivated by the stochastic Lotka-Volterra model, we introduce discrete-state interacting multitype branching processes. We show that they can be obtained as the sum of a multidimensional random walk with a Lamperti-type change proportional to the population size; and a multidimensional Poisson process with a time-change proportional to the pairwise interactions. We define the analogous continuous-state process as the unique strong solution of a multidimensional SDE. We prove that the scaling limits of the discrete-state process correspond to its continuous counterpart. In addition, we show th…

In this paper we consider a d-dimensional scenery seen along a simple symmetric branching random walk, where at each time each particle gives the color record it is seeing. We show that we can a.s. reconstruct the scenery up to equivalence from the color record of all the particles. For this we assume that the scenery has at least 2d + 1 colors which are i.i.d. with uniform probability. This is an improvement in comparison to [22] where the particles needed to see at each time a window around their current position. In [11] the reconstruction is done for d = 2 with only one particle instead of…
We study branching random walks in random environment on the $d$-dimensional square lattice, $d \geq 1$. In this model, the environment has finite range dependence, and the population size cannot decrease. We prove limit theorems (laws of large numbers) for the set of lattice sites which are visited up to a large time as well as for the local size of the population. The limiting shape of this set is compact and convex, though the local size is given by a concave growth exponent. Also, we obtain the law of large numbers for the logarithm of the total number of particles in the process.
In this paper we first provide several conditional limit theorems for Lévy processes with negative drift and regularly varying tail. Then we apply them to study the asymptotic behavior of expectations of some exponential functionals of heavy-tailed Lévy processes. As the key point, we observe that the asymptotics mainly depends on the sample paths with early arrival large jump. Both the polynomial decay rate and the exact expression of the limit coefficients are given. As an application, we give an exact description for the extinction speed of continuous-state branching processes in heavy-tail…
We consider a continuous-time branching random walk on a multidimensional lattice with two types of particles and an infinite number of initial particles. The main results are devoted to the study of the generating function and the limiting behavior of the moments of subpopulations generated by a single particle of each type. We assume that particle types differ from each other not only by the laws of branching, as in multi-type branching processes, but also by the laws of walking. For a critical branching process at each lattice point and recurrent random walk of particles, the effect of limi…
Motivated by seminal paper of Kozlov et al.(1975) we consider in this paper a branching process with a geometric offspring distribution parametrized by random success probability $A$ and immigration equals $1$ in each generation. In contrast to above mentioned article, we assume that environment is heavy-tailed, that is $\log A^{-1} (1-A)$ is regularly varying with a parameter $α>1$, that is that ${\bf P} \Big( \log A^{-1} (1-A) > x \Big) = x^{-α} L(x)$ for a slowly varying function $L$. We will prove that although the offspring distribution is light-tailed, the environment itself can produce …
For a supercritical catalytic branching random walk on Z^d (d is positive integer) with an arbitrary finite catalysts set we study the spread of particles population as time grows to infinity. Namely, we divide by t the position coordinates of each particle existing at time t and then let t tend to infinity. It is shown that in the limit there are a.s. no particles outside the closed convex surface in R^d which we call the propagation front and, under condition of infinite number of visits of the catalysts set, a.s. there exist particles on the propagation front. We also demonstrate that the p…
Symmetric heavily tailed random walks on $Z^d, d\geq 1,$ are considered. Under appropriate regularity conditions on the tails of the jump distributions, global (i.e., uniform in $x,t, |x|+t\to\infty,$) asymptotic behavior of the transition probability $p(t,0,x)$ is obtained. The examples indicate that the regularity conditions are essential.
Consider a branching random walk on $\mathbb{R}$, with offspring distribution Z and nonnegative displacement distribution W. We say that explosion occurs if an infinite number of particles may be found within a finite distance of the origin. In this paper, we investigate this phenomenon when the offspring distribution Z is heavy-tailed. Under an appropriate condition, we are able to characterize the pairs (Z, W) for which explosion occurs, by demonstrating the equivalence of explosion with a seemingly much weaker event: that the sum over generations of the minimum displacement in each generati…
We report some properties of heavy-tailed Sibuya-like distributions related to thinning, self-decomposability and branching processes. Extension of the thinning operation of on-negative integer-valued random variables to scaling by arbitrary positive number leads to a new class of probability distributions with generating function $Q(w)$ expressible as a Laplace transform $φ(1-w)$ and probability mass function $p_n$ satisfying simple one step recurrence relation between $p_{n+1}$ and $p_n$. We show that the compound Poisson-Sibuya and the shifted Sibuya distributions belong to this class. Usin…
Motivated by a seminal paper of Kesten et al. (1975) we consider a branching process with a geometric offspring distribution with i.i.d. random environmental parameters $A_n$, $n\ge 1$ and size -1 immigration in each generation. In contrast to above mentioned paper we assume that the environment is long-tailed, that is that the distribution $F$ of $ξ_n := \log ((1-A_n)/A_n)$ is long-tailed. We prove that although the offspring distribution is light-tailed, the environment itself can produce extremely heavy tails of the distribution of the population size in the n-th generation which becomes ev…
In this paper, we consider the state-dependent reflecting random walk on a half-strip. We provide explicit criteria for (positive) recurrence, and an explicit expression for the stationary distribution. As a consequence, the light-tailed behavior of the stationary distribution is proved under appropriate conditions. The key idea of the method employed here is the decomposition of the trajectory of the random walk and the main tool is the intrinsic branching structure buried in the random walk on a strip, which is different from the matrix-analytic method.
This paper considers a general stochastic SIR epidemic model driven by a multidimensional Levy jump process with heavy tailed increments and possible correlation between noise components. In this framework, we derive new sufficient conditions for disease extinction and persistence in the mean. Our method differs from previous approaches by the use of Kunita's inequality instead of the Burkholder-Davis-Gundy inequality for continuous processes, and allows for the treatment of infinite Levy measures by the definition of new threshold values. An SIR model driven by a tempered stable process is pr…
Tail asymptotics of the solution $R$ to a fixpoint problem of type $R =_{st} Q + \sum_1^N R_m$ is derived under heavy-tailed conditions allowing both dependence between $Q$ and $N$ and the tails to be of the same order of magnitude. Similar results are derived for a $K$-class version with applications to multitype branching processes and busy periods in multiclass queues.
The reduced Markov branching process is a stochastic model for the genealogy of an unstructured biological population. Its limit behavior in the critical case is well studied for the Zolotarev-Slack regularity parameter $α\in(0,1]$. We turn to the case of very heavy tailed reproduction distribution $α=0$ assuming Zubkov's regularity condition with parameter $β\in(0,\infty)$. Our main result gives a new asymptotic pattern for the reduced branching process conditioned on non-extinction during a long time interval.
We consider a supercritical catalytic branching random walk (CBRW) on a multidimensional lattice Z^d (d is positive integer). The main subject of study is the behavior of particles cloud in space and time. For CBRW on an integer line, Carmona and Hu (2014) examined the asymptotical behavior of the maximal coordinate M_n of the particles at time n. They proved that M_n/n converges to μalmost surely (on a set of local non-degeneracy of CBRW), as n tends to infinity, where μ>0 is a certain constant. Under additional assumption of a single catalyst in CBRW they also investigated the fluctuations o…
We consider a $d$-dimensional branching particle system in a random environment. Suppose that the initial measures converge weakly to a measure with bounded density. Under the Mytnik-Sturm branching mechanism, we prove that the corresponding empirical measure $X_t^n$ converges weakly in the Skorohod space $D([0,T];M_F(\mathbb{R}^d))$ and the limit has a density $u_t(x)$, where $M_F(\mathbb{R}^d)$ is the space of finite measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$. We also derive a stochastic partial differential equation $u_t(x)$ satisfies. By using the techniques of Malliavin calculus, we prove that $u_t(x)$ i…
It is well known that the behaviour of a branching process is completely described by the generating function of the offspring law and its fixed points. Branching random walks are a natural generalization of branching processes: a branching process can be seen as a one-dimensional branching random walk. We define a multidimensional generating function associated to a given branching random walk. The present paper investigates the similarities and the differences of the generating functions, their fixed points and the implications on the underlying stochastic process, between the one-dimensiona…
A catalytic branching random walk on a multidimensional lattice, with arbitrary finite number of catalysts, is studied in supercritical regime. The dynamics of spatial spread of the particles population is examined, upon normalization. The components of the vector random walk jump are assumed independent (or close to independent) and have semi-exponential distributions with, possibly, different parameters. A limit theorem on the almost sure normalized positions of the particles at the population ``front'' is established. Contrary to the case of the random walk increments with ``light'' distrib…
We consider a supercritical symmetric continuous-time branching random walk on a multidimensional lattice with a finite number of particle generation sources of varying positive intensities without any restrictions on the variance of jumps of the underlying random walk. It is assumed that the spectrum of the evolution operator contains at least one positive eigenvalue. We prove that under these conditions the largest eigenvalue of the evolution operator is simple and determines the rate of exponential growth of particle quantities at every point on the lattice as well as on the lattice as a wh…
The occupation time of an age-dependent branching particle system in $\Rd$ is considered, where the initial population is a Poisson random field and the particles are subject to symmetric $α$-stable migration, critical binary branching and random lifetimes. Two regimes of lifetime distributions are considered: lifetimes with finite mean and lifetimes belonging to the normal domain of attraction of a $γ$-stable law, $γ\in(0,1)$. It is shown that in dimensions $d>αγ$ for the heavy-tailed lifetimes case, and $d>α$ for finite mean lifetimes, the occupation time proccess satisfies a strong law of l…
Branching processes are widely used to model the viral epidemic evolution. For more adequate investigation of viral epidemic modelling, we suggest to apply branching processes with transport of particles usually called branching random walks (BRWs). This allows to investigate not only the number of particles (infected individuals), but also their spatial spread. We consider two models of continuous-time BRWs on a multidimensional lattice in which the transport of infected individuals is described by a symmetric random walk on a multidimensional lattice whereas the processes of birth and death …
We consider a fixed-point equation for a non-negative integer-valued random variable, that appears in branching processes with state-independent immigration. A similar equation appears in the analysis of a single-server queue with a homogeneous Poisson input, feedback and permanent customer(s). It is known that the solution to this equation uniquely exists under mild first and logarithmic moments conditions. We find further the tail asymptotics of the distribution of the solution when the immigration size and branch size distributions are heavy-tailed. We assume that the distributions of inter…
It is a common practice to describe branching random walks in terms of birth, death and walk of particles, which makes it easier to use them in different applications. The main results obtained for the models of symmetric continuous-time heavy-tailed branching random walks on a multidimensional lattice. We will be mainly interested in studying the problems related to the limiting behavior of branching random walks such as the existence of phase transitions under change of various parameters, the properties of the limiting distribution and the survival probability of a particle population. Emph…
We consider a new model of a branching random walk on a multidimensional lattice with continuous time and one source of particle reproduction and death, as well as an infinite number of sources in which, in addition to the walk, only absorption of particles can occur. The asymptotic behavior of the integer moments of both the total number of particles and the number of particles at a lattice point is studied depending on the relationship between the model parameters. In the case of the existence of an isolated positive eigenvalue of the evolution operator of the average number of particles, a …
Consideration is given to the continuous-time supercritical branching random walk over a multidimensional lattice with a finite number of particle generation sources of the same intensity both with and without constraint on the variance of jumps of random walk underlying the process. Asymptotic behavior of the Green function and eigenvalue of the evolution operator of the mean number of particles under source intensity close to the critical one was established.
We establish inequalities for assessing the distance between the distribution of a (possibly multidimensional) functional of a Poisson random measure and that of a Gaussian element. Our bounds only involve add-one cost operators at the order one - that we evaluate and compare at two different scales - and are specifically tailored for studying the Gaussian fluctuations of sequences of geometric functionals displaying a form of weak stabilization - see Penrose and Yukich (2001) and Penrose (2005). Our main bounds extend the estimates recently exploited by Chatterjee and Sen (2017) in the proof …
We consider a continuous-time symmetric branching random walk on multidimensional lattices with immigration and infinite number of initial particles. We assume that at every lattice point a process of birth and death of particles is described by a Bienayme-Galton- Watson branching process. The assumption on immigration of particles is that a new particle can appear at every lattice point from the outside. The subject of the study is a limit distribution of the particle field on the lattice. The differential equations for correlation functions for the number of particles at an arbitrary time mo…
We study a catalytic branching process (CBP) with any finite set of catalysts. This model describes a system of particles where the movement is governed by a Markov chain with arbitrary finite or countable state space and the branching may only occur at the points of catalysis. The results obtained generalize and strengthen those known in cases of CBP with a single catalyst and of branching random walk on d-dimensional integer lattice with a finite number of sources of particles generation. We propose to classify CBP with N catalysts as supercritical, critical or subcritical according to the v…
The infinite source Poisson arrival model with heavy-tailed workload distributions has attracted much attention, especially in the modeling of data packet traffic in communication networks. In particular, it is well known that under suitable assumptions on the source arrival rate, the centered and scaled cumulative workload process for the underlying processing system can be approximated by fractional Brownian motion. In many applications one is interested in the stabilization of the work inflow to the system by modifying the net input rate, using an appropriate admission control policy. In th…
We obtain a bijection between some set of multidimensional sequences and this of $d$-type plane forests which is based on the breadth first search algorithm. This coding sequence is related to the sequence of population sizes indexed by the generations, through a Lamperti type transformation. The same transformation in then obtained in continuous time for multitype branching processes with discrete values. We show that any such process can be obtained from a $d^2$ dimensional compound Poisson process time changed by some integral functional. Our proof bears on the discretisation of branching f…
We consider a continuous-time branching random walk on a multidimensional lattice in a random branching medium. It is theoretically known that, in such branching random walks, large rare fluctuations of the medium may lead to anomalous properties of a particle field, e.g., such as intermittency. However, the time intervals on which this intermittency phenomenon can be observed are very difficult to estimate in practice. In this paper, branching media containing only a finite and non-finite number of branching sources are considered. The evolution of the mean number of particles with a random p…
Branching random walks on multidimensional lattice with heavy tails and a constant branching rate are considered. It is shown that under these conditions (heavy tails and constant rate), the front propagates exponentially fast, but the particles inside of the front are distributed very non-uniformly. The particles exhibit intermittent behavior in a large part of the region behind the front (i.e., the particles are concentrated only in very sparse spots there). The zone of non-intermittency (were particles are distributed relatively uniformly) extends with a power rate. This rate is found.
We propose a class of strongly efficient rare event simulation estimators for random walks and compound Poisson processes with a regularly varying increment/jump-size distribution in a general large deviations regime. Our estimator is based on an importance sampling strategy that hinges on the heavy-tailed sample path large deviations result recently established in Rhee, Blanchet, and Zwart (2016). The new estimators are straightforward to implement and can be used to systematically evaluate the probability of a wide range of rare events with bounded relative error. They are "universal" in the…
We introduce particle systems in one or more dimensions in which particles perform branching Brownian motion and the population size is kept constant equal to $N > 1$, through the following selection mechanism: at all times only the $N$ fittest particles survive, while all the other particles are removed. Fitness is measured with respect to some given score function $s:\R^d \to \R$. For some choices of the function $s$, it is proved that the cloud of particles travels at positive speed in some possibly random direction. In the case where $s$ is linear, we show under some assumptions on the ini…
We consider a continuous-time symmetric supercritical branching random walk on a multidimensional lattice with a finite set of the particle generation centres, i.e. branching sources. The main object of study is the evolutionary operator for the mean number of particles both at an arbitrary point and on the entire lattice. The existence of positive eigenvalues in the spectrum of an evolutionary operator results in an exponential growth of the number of particles in branching random walks, called supercritical in the such case. For supercritical branching random walks, it is shown that the amou…
We consider a generalization of spatial branching coalescing processes in which the behaviour of individuals is not (necessarily) independent, on the contrary, individuals tend to take simultaneous actions. We show that these processes have moment duals, which happen to be multidimensional diffusions with jumps. Moment duality provides a general framework to study structural properties of the processes in this class. We present some conditions under which the expectation of the process is not affected by coordination and comment on the effect of coordination on the variance. We analyse several…
