We consider the closed subspace of $\ell_\infty$ generated by $c_0$ and the characteristic functions of elements of an uncountable, almost disjoint family $\mathcal A$ of infinite subsets of $\mathbb N$. This Banach space has the form $C_0(K_{\mathcal A})$ for a locally compact Hausdorff space $K_{\mathcal A}$ that is known under many names, such as $Ψ$-space and Isbell--Mrówka space.
We construct an uncountable, almost disjoint family ${\mathcal A}$ such that the Banach algebra of all bounded linear operators on $C_0(K_{\mathcal A})$ is as small as possible in the sense that every bounded linear operator on $C_0(K_{\mathcal A})$ is the sum of a scalar multiple of the identity and an operator that factors through $c_0$ (which in this case is equivalent to having separable range). This implies that $C_0(K_{\mathcal A})$ has the fewest possible decompositions: whenever $C_0(K_{\mathcal A})=X\oplus Y$ with $dim({X})=\infty$, $dim({Y})=\infty$, either ${X}$ is isomorphic to $C_0(K_{\mathcal A})$ and ${Y}$ to $c_0$, or vice versa. These results improve previous work of the first named author in which an extra set-theoretic hypothesis was required. We also discuss the consequences of these results for the algebra of all bounded linear operators on our Banach space $C_0(K_{\mathcal A})$ concerning the lattice of closed ideals, characters and automatic continuity of homomorphisms.
To exploit the perfect set property for Borel sets as in the classical construction of an almost disjoint family of Mrówka we need to deal with $\mathbb N \times \mathbb N$-matrices rather than with the usual partitioners. This noncommutative setting requires new ideas inspired by the theory of compact and weakly compact operators and the use of an extraction principle due to F. van Engelen, K. Kunen and A. Miller concerning Borel subsets of the square.
We characterize those classes $\ccc$ of separable Banach spaces admitting a separable universal space $Y$ (that is, a space $Y$ containing, up to isomorphism, all members of $\ccc$) which is not universal for all separable Banach spaces. The characterization is a byproduct of the fact, proved in the paper, that the class $\mathrm{NU}$ of non-universal separable Banach spaces is strongly bounded. This settles in the affirmative the main conjecture form \cite{AD}. Our approach is based, among others, on a construction of $\llll_\infty$-spaces, due to J. Bourgain and G. Pisier. As a consequence w…
$C_p(X)$ denotes the space of continuous real-valued functions on a Tychonoff space $X$ endowed with the topology of pointwise convergence. A Banach space $E$ equipped with the weak topology is denoted by $E_{w}$. It is unknown whether $C_p(K)$ and $C(L)_{w}$ can be homeomorphic for infinite compact spaces $K$ and $L$ \cite{Krupski-1}, \cite{Krupski-2}. In this paper we deal with a more general question: what are the Banach spaces $E$ which admit certain continuous surjective mappings $T: C_p(X) \to E_{w}$ for an infinite Tychonoff space $X$? First, we prove that if $T$ is linear and sequentia…
We introduce and study a new class of operators that we call disjoint weak Banach-Saks operators. We establish some characterizations of this class of operators by different types of convergence (norm convergence, unbounded order convergence, unbounded norm convergence and unbounded absolute weak convergence) as well as by the positive weakly null sequences. Consequently, we give a new characterization of the disjoint weak Banach-Saks property by the positive disjoint weakly null sequences. Furthermore, we study the relationship between this class and other classes of operators.
We introduce UDSp-property (resp. UDTq-property) in Banach lattices as the property that every normalized disjoint sequence has a subsequence with an upper p-estimate (resp. lower q-estimate). In the case of rearrangement invariant spaces, the relationships with Boyd indices of the space are studied. Some applications of these properties are given to the high order smoothness of Banach lattices, in the sense of the existence of differentiable bump functions.
We describe essential (in particular Fredholm and semi-Fredholm) spectra of operators on Banach lattices of the form $T=wU$, where $w$ is a central operator and $U$ is a disjointness preserving operator such that its spectrum $σ(U)$ is a subset of the unit circle.

An operator $T$ from a Banach lattice $E$ into a Banach space is disjointly non-singular ($DN$-$S$, for short) if no restriction of $T$ to a subspace generated by a disjoint sequence is strictly singular. We obtain several results for $DN$-$S$ operators, including a perturbative characterization. For $E=L_p$ ($1< p<\infty$) we improve the results, and we show that the $DN$-$S$ operators have a different behavior in the cases $p=2$ and $p\neq 2$. As an application we prove that the strongly embedded subspaces of $L_p$ form an open subset in the set of all closed subspaces.
We generalize results concerning $\mathrm{C}_0$-semigroups on Banach lattices to a setting of ordered Banach spaces. We prove that the generator of a disjointness preserving $\mathrm{C}_0$-semigroup is local. Some basic properties of local operators are also given. We investigate cases where local operators generate local $\mathrm{C}_0$-semigroups, by using Taylor series or Yosida approximations. As norms we consider regular norms and show that bands are closed with respect to such norms. Our proofs rely on the theory of embedding pre-Riesz spaces in vector lattices and on corresponding extens…
Let C be an axiomatizable class of order continuous real or complex Banach lattices, that is, this class is closed under isometric vector lattice isomorphisms and ultraproducts, and the complementary class is closed under ultrapowers. We show that if linear isometric embeddings of members of C in their ultrapowers preserve disjointness, the class C^B of Banach spaces obtained by forgetting the Banach lattice structure is still axiomatizable. Moreover if C coincides with its "script class" SC, so does C^B with SC^B. This allows us to give new examples of axiomatizable classes of Banach spaces, …
For a fixed $K\gg 1$ and $n\in\mathbb{N}$, $n\gg 1$, we study metric spaces which admit embeddings with distortion $\le K$ into each $n$-dimensional Banach space. Classical examples include spaces embeddable into $\log n$-dimensional Euclidean spaces, and equilateral spaces. We prove that good embeddability properties are preserved under the operation of metric composition of metric spaces. In particular, we prove that any $n$-point ultrametric can be embedded with uniformly bounded distortion into any Banach space of dimension $\log n$. The main result of the paper is a new example of a famil…
In this article we investigate the disjointly non-singular (DNS) operators. Following [8] we say that an operator $T$ from a Banach lattice $F$ into a Banach space $E$ is DNS, if no restriction of $T$ to a subspace generated by a disjoint sequence is strictly singular. We partially answer a question from [8] by showing that this class of operators forms an open subset of $L\left(F,E\right)$ as soon as $F$ is order continuous. Moreover, we show that in this case $T$ is DNS if and only if the norm topology is the minimal topology which is simultaneously stronger than the unbounded norm topology …
We introduce and study some operational quantities which characterize the disjointly non-singular operators from a Banach lattice $E$ to a Banach space $Y$ when $E$ is order continuous, and some other quantities which characterize the disjointly strictly singular operators for arbitrary $E$.
Read produced the first example of a Banach space $E_{\text{R}}$ such that the associated Banach algebra $\mathscr{B}(E_{\text{R}})$ of bounded operators admits a discontinuous derivation (J. London Math. Soc. 1989). We generalise Read's main theorem about $\mathscr{B}(E_{\text{R}})$ from which he deduced this conclusion, as well as the key technical lemmas that his proof relied on, by constructing a strongly split-exact sequence {0} --> $\mathscr{W}(E_{\text{R}})$ --> $\mathscr{B}(E_{\text{R}})$--> $\tilde{\ell_2}$-->{0}, where $\mathscr{W}(E_{\text{R}})$ denotes the ideal of weakly compact o…
For every Banach space $Z$ with a shrinking unconditional basis satisfying upper $p$-estimates for some $p > 1$, an isomorphically polyhedral Banach space is constructed having an unconditional basis and admitting a quotient isomorphic to $Z$.
We construct a nonseparable Banach space $\mathcal X$ (actually, of density continuum) such that any uncountable subset $\mathcal Y$ of the unit sphere of $\mathcal X$ contains uncountably many points distant by less than $1$ (in fact, by less then $1-\varepsilon$ for some $\varepsilon>0$). This solves in the negative the central problem of the search for a nonseparable version of Kottman's theorem which so far has produced many deep positive results for special classes of Banach spaces and has related the global properties of the spaces to the distances between points of uncountable subsets o…
We show that on separable Banach spaces admitting a separating polynomial, any uniformly continuous, bounded, real-valued function can be uniformly approximated by Lipschitz, analytic maps on bounded sets.
We explore the relation between lattice versions of strict singularity for operators from a Banach lattice to a Banach space. In particular, we study when the class of disjointly strictly singular operators, those not invertible on the span of any disjoint sequence, coincides with that of lattice strictly singular operators, i.e. those not invertible on any (infinite dimensional) sublattice. New results are given which help to clarify the existing relation between these two classes.
We exhibit abelian topological groups admitting no nontrivial strongly continuous irreducible representations in Banach spaces. Among them are some abelian Banach-Lie groups and some monothetic subgroups of the unitary group of a separable Hilbert space.
Several recent papers were devoted to various modifications of limited, Grothendieck, and Dunford--Pettis operators, etc., through involving the Banach lattice structure. In the present paper, it is shown that many of these operators appear as operators affiliated to well known properties of Banach lattices, like the disjoint (dual) Schur property, the disjoint Grothendieck property, the property (d), and the sequential w*-continuity of the lattice operations. It is proved that the spaces consisting of regularly versions of the above operators are all Banach spaces. The domination problem for …
We give a characterization of conditional expectation operators through a disjointness type property similar to band preserving operators. We say that the operator $T:X\to X$ on a Banach lattice $X$ is semi band preserving if and only if for all $f, g \in X$, $f \perp Tg$ implies that $Tf \perp Tg$. We prove that when $X$ is a purely atomic Banach lattice, then an operator $T$ on $X$ is a weighted conditional expectation operator if and only if $T$ is semi band preserving.
For every $ 1 < p < \infty $ an isomorphically polyhedral Banach space $E_p$ is constructed having an unconditional basis and admitting a quotient isomorphic to $\ell_p$. It is also shown that $E_p$ is not isomorphic to a subspace of a $C(K)$ space for every countable and compact metric space $K$.
We consider uncountable almost disjoint families of subsets of $\mathbb N$, the Johnson-Lindenstrauss Banach spaces $(\mathcal X_{\mathcal A}, \|\ \|_\infty)$ induced by them, and their natural equivalent renormings $(\mathcal X_{\mathcal A}, \|\ \|_{\infty, 2})$. We introduce a partial order $\mathbb P_{\mathcal A}$ and characterize some geometric properties of the spheres of $(\mathcal X_{\mathcal A}, \|\ \|_{\infty})$ and of $(\mathcal X_{\mathcal A}, \|\ \|_{\infty, 2})$ in terms of combinatorial properties of $\mathbb P_{\mathcal A}$. Exploiting the extreme behavior of some known and some…
It is shown that for each separable Banach space $X$ not admitting $\ell_1$ as a spreading model there is a space $Y$ having $X$ as a quotient and not admitting any $\ell_p$ for $1 \leq p < \infty$ or $c_0$ as a spreading model. We also include the solution to a question of W.B. Johnson and H.P. Rosenthal on the existence of a separable space not admitting as a quotient any space with separable dual.
A Banach lattice E is called p-disjointly homogeneous, 1< p< infty, when every sequence of pairwise disjoint normalized elements in E has a subsequence equivalent to the unit vector basis of l_p. Employing methods from interpolation theory, we clarify which rearrangement invariant (r.i.) spaces on [0,1] are p-disjointly homogeneous. In particular, for every 1<p< infty and any increasing concave function f on [0,1], which is not equivalent neither 1 nor t, there exists a p-disjointly homogeneous r.i. space with the fundamental function f. Moreover, in the class of all interpolation r.i. spaces …
For every $α<ω_1$ we establish the existence of a separable Banach space whose Szlenk index is $ω^{αω+1}$ and which is universal for all separable Banach spaces whose Szlenk-index does not exceed $ω^{αω}$. In order to prove that result we provide an intrinsic characterization of which Banach spaces embed into a space admitting an FDD with upper estimates.
We study the stability of disjointness preservers on Banach lattices. In many cases, we prove that an "almost disjointness preserving" operator is well approximable by a disjointess preserving one. However, this approximation is not always possible, as our examples show.
Let $X$ be a real separable normed space $X$ admitting a separating polynomial. We prove that each continuous function from a subset $A$ of $X$ to a real Banach space can be uniformly approximated by restrictions to $A$ of functions which are analytic on open subsets of $X$. Also we prove that each continuous function to a complex Banach space from a complex separable normed space admitting a separating $*$-polynomial can be uniformly approximated by $*$-analytic functions.
We give a short proof of the existence of disjoint hypercyclic tuples of operators of any given length on any separable infinite dimensional Frechet space. A similar argument provides disjoint dual hypercyclic tuples of operators of any length on any infinite dimensional Banach space with separable dual.
We present some new results on the symmetric Kottman's constant $K^s(X)$ of a Banach space $X$ and its relationship with the Kottman constant. We show that $K^s(X)>1$, for every infinite-dimensional Banach space, thereby solving a problem by J.M.F. Castillo and P.L. Papini. We also investigate such constant in the class of Banach spaces admitting $c_0$ spreading models, answering in particular one question from our previous joint paper with P. Hájek and T. Kania.
A pair of functions defined on a set X with values in a vector space E is said to be disjoint if at least one of the functions takes the value 0 at every point in X. An operator acting between vector-valued function spaces is disjointness preserving if it maps disjoint functions to disjoint functions. We characterize compact and weakly compact disjointness preserving operators between spaces of Banach space-valued differentiable functions.
We introduce several different notions of disjoint distributional chaos for sequences of multivalued linear operators in Fréchet spaces. Any of these notions seems to be new and not considered elsewhere even for linear continuous operators in Banach spaces. We focus special attention to the analysis of some specific classes of linear continuous operators having a certain disjoint distributionally chaotic behaviour, providing also a great number of illustrative examples and applications of our abstract theoretical results.
Let $1\le p<\infty$. A symmetric space $X$ on $[0,1]$ is said to be $p$-disjointly homogeneous (resp. restricted $p$-disjointly homogeneous) if every sequence of normalized pairwise disjoint functions from $X$ (resp. characteristic functions) contains a subsequence equivalent in $X$ to the unit vector basis of $l_p$. Answering a question posed recently, we construct, for each $1\le p<\infty$, a restricted $p$-disjointly homogeneous symmetric space, which is not $p$-disjointly homogeneous. Moreover, we prove that the property of $p$-disjoint homogeneity is preserved under Banach isomorphisms.
For a Banach space $X$, a sequence of Banach spaces $(Y_n)$, and a Banach space $Z$ with an unconditional basis, D. Alspach and B. Sari introduced a generalization of a Bourgain tree called a $(\oplus_n Y_n)_Z$-tree in $X$. These authors also prove that any separable Banach space admitting a $(\oplus_n Y_n)_Z$-tree with order $ω_1$ admits a subspace isomorphic to $(\oplus_n Y_n)_Z$. In this paper we give two new proofs of this result.
A Banach space $E$ is said to be injective if for every Banach space $X$ and every subspace $Y$ of $X$ every operator $t:Y\to E$ has an extension $T:X\to E$. We say that $E$ is $\aleph$-injective (respectively, universally $\aleph$-injective) if the preceding condition holds for Banach spaces $X$ (respectively $Y$) with density less than a given uncountable cardinal $\aleph$. We perform a study of $\aleph$-injective and universally $\aleph$-injective Banach spaces which extends the basic case where $\aleph=\aleph_1$ is the first uncountable cardinal. When dealing with the corresponding "isomet…
The disjointly non-singular ($DNS$) operators $T\in L(E,Y)$ from a Banach lattice $E$ to a Banach space $Y$ are those operators which are strictly singular in no closed subspace generated by a disjoint sequence of non-zero vectors. When $E$ is order continuous with a weak unit, $E$ can be represented as a dense ideal in some $L_1(μ)$ space, and we show that each of $T\in DNS(E,Y)$ admits an extension $\overline{T}\in DNS(L_1(μ),PO)$ from which we derive that both $T$ and $T^{**}$ are tauberian operators and that the operator $T^{co}: E^{**}/E\to Y^{**}/Y$ induced by $T^{**}$ is an (into) isomo…
We prove that the class of Banach function lattices in which all relatively weakly compact sets are equi-integrable sets (i.e. spaces satisfying the Dunford-Pettis criterion) coincides with the class of 1-disjointly homogeneous Banach lattices. A new examples of such spaces are provided. Furthermore, it is shown that Dunford-Pettis criterion is equivalent to de la Vallee Poussin criterion in all rearrangement invariant spaces on the interval. Finally, the results are applied to characterize weakly compact pointwise multipliers between Banach function lattices.
We construct a totally disconnected compact Hausdorff space N which has clopen subsets M included in L included in N such that N is homeomorphic to M and hence C(N) is isometric as a Banach space to C(M) but C(N) is not isomorphic to C(L). This gives two nonisomorphic Banach spaces of the form C(K) which are isomorphic to complemented subspaces of each other (even in the above strong isometric sense), providing a solution to the Schroeder-Bernstein problem for Banach spaces of the form C(K). N is obtained as a particular compactification of the pairwise disjoint union of a sequence of Ks for w…
For a Banach space $X$ its subset $Y\subseteq X$ is called overcomplete if $|Y|=dens(X)$ and $Z$ is linearly dense in $X$ for every $Z\subseteq Y$ with $|Z|=|Y|$. In the context of nonseparable Banach spaces this notion was introduced recently by T. Russo and J. Somaglia but overcomplete sets have been considered in separable Banach spaces since the 1950ties. We prove some absolute and consistency results concerning the existence and the nonexistence of overcomplete sets in some classical nonseparable Banach spaces. For example: $c_0(ω_1)$, $C([0,ω_1])$, $L_1(\{0,1\}^{ω_1})$, $\ell_p(ω_1)$, $L…
Let $I$ be a countably infinite index set, and let $X$ be a Banach sequence space over $I.$ In this article, we characterize disjoint hypercyclic and supercyclic weighted pseudo-shift operators on $X$ in terms of the weights, the OP-basis, and the shift mappings on $I.$ Also, the shifts on weighted $L^p$ spaces of a directed tree and the operator weighted shifts on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z,\mathcal{K}})$ are investigated as special cases.
We show that a continuous bilinear mapping P: C(I) \times C(I) \to C(I) can be presented in the form P(f,g) = B((Af)(Ag)), where A and B are bounded linear operators on C(I) and multiplication is defined pointwise, if and only if for all t in I the bilinear form (f,g) -> P(f,g)(t) is integral on C(I) times C(I) and depends in a sense continuously on t. To this end we construct a continuous surjection phi : I \to I^2 admitting a regular averaging operator in the sense of Pelczynski.
First we adjust a technique due to Jiménez-Rodríguez to prove the complete latticeability of the set of disjoint non-norm null weakly null sequences and of the set of disjoint non-norm null regular-polynomially null sequences in Banach lattices. Then we apply the mother vector technique to prove the complete latticeability of $λ_π(E) \setminus λ_s(E)$, which implies the complete latticeability of $(\ell_p\widehat{\otimes}_{|π|}E)\setminus(\ell_p\widehat{\otimes}_πE)$, where $E$ is a Banach lattice and $1 < p < \infty$.
We develop tools to produce equivalent norms with specific local geometry around infinitely many points in the sphere of a Banach space via an inductive procedure. We combine this process with smoothness results and techniques to solve two open problems posed in the recently published monograph [GMZ22] by A. J. Guirao, V. Montesinos and V. Zizler. Specifically, on the one hand we construct in every separable Banach space admitting a $C^k$-smooth norm an equivalent norm which is $C^k$-smooth but fails to be uniformly Gâteaux in any direction; and on the other hand we produce in $c_0(Γ)$ for any…
Let $1\le p<\infty$. A Banach lattice $E$ is said to be disjointly homogeneous (resp. $p$-disjointly homogeneous) if two arbitrary normalized disjoint sequences from $E$ contain equivalent in $E$ subsequences (resp. every normalized disjoint sequence contains a subsequence equivalent in $E$ to the unit vector basis of $l_p$). Answering a question raised in 2014 by Flores, Hernandez, Spinu, Tradacete, and Troitsky, for each $1<p<\infty$, we construct a reflexive $p$-disjointly homogeneous rearrangement invariant space on $[0,1]$ whose dual is not disjointly homogeneous. Employing methods from i…
We extend to the non separable setting many characterizations of the Banach spaces admitting an equivalent norm with the property $(β)$ of Rolewicz. These characterizations involve in particular the Szlenk index and asymptotically uniformly smooth or convex norms. This allows to extend easily to the non separable case some recent results from the non linear geometry of Banach spaces.
We introduce and study the class of almost limited sets in Banach lattices, that is, sets on which every disjoint weak$^{*}$ null sequence of functionals converges uniformly to zero. It is established that a Banach lattice has order continuous norm if and only if almost limited sets and $L$-weakly compact sets coincide. In particular, in terms of almost Dunford-Pettis operators into $c_{0}$, we give an operator characterization of those $σ$-Dedekind complete Banach lattices whose relatively weakly compact sets are almost limited, that is, for a $σ$-Dedekind Banach lattice $E$, every relatively…
Let $1\le p\le\infty$. A Banach lattice $X$ is said to be $p$-disjointly homogeneous or $(p-DH)$ (resp. restricted $(p-DH)$) if every normalized disjoint sequence in $X$ (resp. every normalized sequence of characteristic functions of disjoint subsets) contains a subsequence equivalent in $X$ to the unit vector basis of $\ell_p$. We revisit $DH$-properties of Orlicz spaces and refine some previous results of this topic, showing that $(p-DH)$-property is not stable in the class of Orlicz spaces and the classes of restricted $(p-DH)$ and $(p-DH)$ Orlicz spaces are different. Moreover, we give a c…
It is shown that for every $k\in\mathbb{N}$ and every spreading sequence $\{e_n\}_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ that generates a uniformly convex Banach space $E$, there exists a uniformly convex Banach space $X_{k+1}$ admitting $\{e_n\}_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ as a $k+1$-iterated spreading model, but not as a $k$-iterated one.
