In this work we introduce and study a new notion of amenability for actions of locally compact groups on $C^*$-algebras. Our definition extends the definition of amenability for actions of discrete groups due to Claire Anantharaman-Delaroche. We show that our definition has several characterizations and permanence properties analogous to those known in the discrete case. For example, for actions on commutative $C^*$-algebras, we show that our notion of amenability is equivalent to measurewise amenability. Combined with a recent result of Alex Bearden and Jason Crann, this also settles a long standing open problem about the equivalence of topological amenability and measurewise amenability for a second countable $G$-space $X$. We use our new notion of amenability to study when the maximal and reduced crossed products agree. One of our main results generalizes a theorem of Matsumura: we show that for an action of an exact locally compact group $G$ on a locally compact space $X$ the full and reduced crossed products $C_0(X)\rtimes_\max G$ and $C_0(X)\rtimes_{\operatorname{red}} G$ coincide if and only if the action of $G$ on $X$ is amenable. We also show that the analogue of this theorem does not hold for actions on noncommutative $C^*$-algebras. Finally, we study amenability as it relates to more detailed structure in the case of $C^*$-algebras that fibre over an appropriate $G$-space $X$, and the interaction of amenability with various regularity properties such as nuclearity, exactness, and the (L)LP, and the equivariant versions of injectivity and the WEP.
We argue that weak containment is an appropriate notion of amenability for inverse semigroups. Given an inverse semigroup $S$ and a homomorphism $ϕ$ of $S$ onto a group $G$, we show, under an assumption on $\ker(ϕ)$, that $S$ has weak containment if and only if $G$ is amenable and $\ker(ϕ)$ has weak containment. Using Fell bundle amenability, we find a related result for inverse semigroups with zero. We show that all graph inverse semigroups have weak containment and that Nica's inverse semigroup $\mcT_{G,P}$ of a quasi-lattice ordered group $(G,P)$ has weak containment if and only if $(G,P)$ …
A locally compact groupoid is said to have the weak containment property if its full $C^*$-algebra coincides with its reduced one. This property is strictly weaker than amenability and is known to be equivalent to amenability for transformation groupoids relative to actions of exact discrete groups. We believe that for general étale groupoids one should have the same equivalence of the two properties under some mild exactness assumption. In this paper we try to support this statement.
In this short note we introduce a notion called "quantum injectivity" of locally compact quantum groups, and prove that it is equivalent to amenability of the dual. Particularly, this provides a new characterization of amenability of locally compact groups.
The notion of Fréchet locally $C^*$-algebra generalizes the notion of $C^*$-algebra. In this paper, we first present some definitions and basic facts about locally $C^*$-algebra, and then we introduce and study the notion of ideal and weak amenability for these algebras. Also, we show that every Fréchet locally $C^*$-algebra is ideally amenable.
As is well known, the equivalence between amenability of a locally compact group $G$ and injectivity of its von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{L}(G)$ does not hold in general beyond inner amenable groups. In this paper, we show that the equivalence persists for all locally compact groups if $\mathcal{L}(G)$ is considered as a $\mathcal{T}(L_2(G))$-module with respect to a natural action. In fact, we prove an appropriate version of this result for every locally compact quantum group.
Let G be a locally compact topological group and X a compact space with continuous G-action. The main result of this essay states that the following statements are equivalent : 1) The action of G on X is topologically amenable ; 2) Every dual (G, X)-module of type C is a relatively injective Banach G-module ; 3) There is a G-invariant element in the double dual of C(X, L1(G)).
We prove that amenability of a unitary co-representation $U$ of a locally compact quantum group passes to unitary co-representations that weakly contain $U$. This generalizes a result of Bekka, and answers affirmatively a question of Bédos, Conti and Tuset. As a corollary, we extend to locally compact quantum groups a result of the first-named author, which characterizes amenability of a locally compact group $G$ by nuclearity of the reduced group $C^{*}$-algebra $C_{r}^{*}(G)$ and an additional condition.
We establish that a second countable locally compact groupoid possessing a continuous Haar system is topologically amenable if and only if it is Borel amenable. We give some examples and applications.
Building on our previous work, we study the non-relative homology of quantum group convolution algebras. Our main result establishes the equivalence of amenability of a locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ and 1-injectivity of $L^{\infty}(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$ as an operator $L^1(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$-module. In particular, a locally compact group $G$ is amenable if and only if its group von Neumann algebra $VN(G)$ is 1-injective as an operator module over the Fourier algebra $A(G)$. As an application, we provide a decomposability result for completely bounded $L^1(\widehat{\mathbb{G}}…
We study stability properties of amenable locally compact quantum groups under the bicrossed product construction. We obtain as our main result an equivalence between amenability of the bicrossed product and amenability of the matched quantum groups used as building ingredients of the bicrossed product. Finally, we give examples of non-amenable locally compact quantum groups obtained by a bicrossed product construction.
We introduce an appropriate notion of inner amenability for locally compact quantum groups, study its basic properties, related notions, and examples arising from the bicrossed product construction. We relate these notions to homological properties of the dual quantum group, which allow us to generalize a well-known result of Lau--Paterson, resolve a recent conjecture of Ng--Viselter, and prove that, for inner amenable quantum groups $\mathbb{G}$, approximation properties of the dual operator algebras can be averaged to approximation properties $\mathbb{G}$. Similar homological techniques are …
We use $\mathrm{C}^{\ast}$-algebra ultrapowers to give a new construction of the Stone-Cech compactification of a separable, locally compact space. We use this construction to give a new proof of the fact that groups that act isometrically, properly, and transitively on trees are boundary amenable.
Three natural definitions for amenability of general Hopf C^*-algebras (all of them being generalizations of the case of locally compact groups) were given and the relations between them were studied. Moreover, amenability in the situation of duality of Hopf C^*-algebras was also studied.
We study weak amenability for locally compact quantum groups in the sense of Kustermans and Vaes. In particular, we focus on non-discrete examples. We prove that a coamenable quantum group is weakly amenable if there exists a net of positive, scaling invariant elements in the Fourier algebra A(G) whose representing multipliers form an approximate identity in C_0(G) that is bounded in the M_0A(G) norm; the bound being an upper estimate for the associated Cowling-Haagerup constant. As an application, we find the appropriate approximation properties of the extended quantum SU(1,1) group and its d…
This is a survey of some aspects of the subject of approximation properties for locally compact quantum groups, based on lectures given at the {\it Topological Quantum Groups} Graduate School, 28 June - 11 July, 2015 in Bedłewo, Poland. We begin with a study of the dual notions of amenability and co-amenability, and then consider weakenings of these properties in the form of the Haagerup property and weak amenability. For discrete quantum groups, the interaction between these properties and various operator algebra approximation properties are investigated. We also study the connection between…
In this article we analyze the notions of amenability and paradoxical decomposition from an algebraic perspective. We consider this dichotomy for locally finite extended metric spaces and for general algebras over commutative fields. In the context of algebras we also study the relation of amenability with proper infiniteness. We apply our general analysis to two important classes of algebras: the unital Leavitt path algebras and the translation algebras on locally finite extended metric spaces. In particular, we show that the amenability of a metric space is equivalent to the algebraic amenab…
Let $G$ and $H$ be locally compact, second countable groups. Assume that $G$ acts in a measure class preserving way on a standard probability space $(X,μ)$ such that $L^\infty(X,μ)$ has an invariant mean and that there is a Borel cocycle $α:G\times X\rightarrow H$ which is proper in a suitable, natural sense. We show that if $H$ has one of the three properties: Haagerup property (a-T-menability), weak amenability or weak Haagerup property, then so does $G$. We observe that it is the case for a weak form of measure equivalence for pairs of discrete groups.
Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a locally compact $σ$-compact Hausdorff ample groupoid on a compact space. In this paper, we further examine the (ubiquitous) fiberwise amenability introduced by the author and Jianchao Wu for $\mathcal{G}$. We define the corresponding concepts of Følner sequences and Banach densities for $\mathcal{G}$, based on which, we establish a topological groupoid version of the Ornstein-Weiss quasi-tilling theorem. This leads to the notion of almost finiteness in measure for ample groupoids as a weaker version of Matui's almost finiteness. As applications, we first show that $C^*_r…
We establish several new characterizations of amenable $W^*$- and $C^*$-dynamical systems over arbitrary locally compact groups. In the $W^*$-setting we show that amenability is equivalent to (1) a Reiter property and (2) the existence of a certain net of completely positive Herz-Schur multipliers of $(M,G,α)$ converging point weak* to the identity of $G\bar{\ltimes}M$. In the $C^*$-setting, we prove that amenability of $(A,G,α)$ is equivalent to an analogous Herz-Schur multiplier approximation of the identity of the reduced crossed product $G\ltimes A$, as well as a particular case of the pos…
For a locally compact Hausdorff semigroup S, the $L^\infty$ representation algebra R(S) was extensively studied by Dunkl and Ramirez. The Fourier-Stieltjes algebra F(S) of a topological semigroup was studied by Lau. The aim of this paper is to investigate these two algebras and study the amenability of them with respect to the structure of S.
We consider the Fourier-Stietljes algebra B(G) of a locally compact group G. We show that operator amenablility of B(G) implies that a certain semitolpological compactification of G admits only finitely many idempotents. In the case that G is connected, we show that operator amenability of B(G) entails that $G$ is compact.
We prove that the following are equivalent for a locally compact group $G$: (i) $G$ is amenable; (ii) $M(G)$ is Connes-amenable; (iii) $M(G)$ has a normal, virtual diagonal.
Let $G$ be a locally compact group. We show that its Fourier algebra $A(G)$ is amenable if and only if $G$ has an abelian subgroup of finite index, and that its Fourier-Stieltjes algebra $B(G)$ is amenable if and only if $G$ has a compact, abelian subgroup of finite index. We then show that $A(G)$ is weakly amenable if the component of the identity of $G$ is abelian, and we prove some partial results towards the converse.
We show that the amenability of a locally compact group $G$ is equivalent to a factorization property of $VN(G)$ which is given by $ VN(G) = <VN(G)^*VN(G)>$. This answer partially two problems proposed by Z. Hu and M. Neufang in their article \textit{Distinguishing properties of Arens irregularity}, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 137 (2009), no. 5, 1753-1761.
We define a Banach algebra A to be dual if $A = (A_\ast)^\ast$ for a closed submodule $A_\ast$ of $A^\ast$. The class of dual Banach algebras includes all $W^\ast$-algebras, but also all algebras M(G) for locally compact groups G, all algebras L(E) for reflexive Banach spaces E, as well as all biduals of Arens regular Banach algebras. The general impression is that amenable, dual Banach algebras are rather the exception than the rule. We confirm this impression. We first show that under certain conditions an amenable dual Banach algebra is already super-amenable and thus finite-dimensional. We…
The basic notions and results of equivariant KK-theory concerning crossed products can be extended to the case of locally compact quantum groups. We recall these constructions and prove some usefull properties of subgroups and amalgamated free products of discrete quantum groups. Using these properties and a quantum analogue of the Bass-Serre tree, we establish the K-amenability of amalgamated free products of amenable discrete quantum groups.
Given a countable residually finite group, we construct a compact group K and two elements w and u of K with the following properties: The group generated by w and the cube of u is amenable, the group generated by w and u contains a copy of the given group, and these two groups are dense in K. By combining it with a construction of non-exact groups that are LEF by Osajda and Arzhantseva--Osajda and formation of diagonal products, we construct an example for which the latter dense group is non-exact. Our proof employs approximations in the space of marked groups of LEF ("Locally Embeddable into…
We give an example of a non-compact, locally compact group $G$ such that its Fourier-Stieltjes algebra $B(G)$ is operator amenable. Furthermore, we characterize those $G$ for which $A^*(G)$ - the spine of $B(G)$ as introduced by M. Ilie and the second named author - is operator amenable and show that $A^*(G)$ is operator weakly amenable for each $G$.
We prove that weak amenability of a locally compact group imposes a strong condition on its amenable closed normal subgroups. This extends non weak amenability results of Haagerup (1988) and Ozawa--Popa (2010). A von Neumann algebra analogue is also obtained.
In this short note, further to Ng's study, we extend Bekka amenability and weak Bekka amenability to general locally compact quantum groups. We generalize some Ng's results to the general case. In particular, we show that, a locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ is co-amenable if and only if the contra-corepresentation of its fundamental multiplicative unitary $W_{\mathbb{G}}$ is Bekka amenable, and $\mathbb{G}$ is amenable if and only if its dual quantum group's fundamental multiplicative unitary $W_{\widehat{\mathbb{G}}}$ is weakly Bekka amenable.
Let G be a locally compact group, and let A(G) and B(G) denote its Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes algebras. These algebras are dual objects of the group and measure algebras, L^1(G) and M(G), in a sense which generalizes the Pontryagin duality theorem on abelian groups. We wish to consider the amenability properties of A(G) and B(G) and compare them to such properties for L^1(G) and M(G). For us, ``amenability properties'' refers to amenability, weak amenability, and biflatness, as well as some properties which are more suited to special settings, such as the hyper-Tauberian property for semisi…
The weak Haagerup property for locally compact groups and the weak Haagerup constant was recently introduced by the second author. The weak Haagerup property is weaker than both weak amenability introduced by Cowling and the first author and the Haagerup property introduced by Connes and Choda. In this paper it is shown that a connected simple Lie group G has the weak Haagerup property if and only if the real rank of G is zero or one. Hence for connected simple Lie groups the weak Haagerup property coincides with weak amenability. Moreover, it turns out that for connected simple Lie groups the…
Given a locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ and a closed quantum subgroup $\mathbb{H}$, we show that $\mathbb{G}$ is amenable if and only if $\mathbb{H}$ is amenable and $\mathbb{G}$ acts amenably on the quantum homogenous space $\mathbb{G}/\mathbb{H}$. We also study the existence of $L^1(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$-module projections from $L^{\infty}(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$ onto $L^{\infty}(\widehat{\mathbb{H}})$.
In his study of amenable unitary representations, M. E. B. Bekka asked if there is an analogue for such representations of the remarkable fixed-point property for amenable groups. In this paper, we prove such a fixed-point theorem in the more general context of a $G$-amenable von Neumann algebra $M$, where $G$ is a locally compact group acting on $M$. The Følner conditions of Connes and Bekka are extended to the case where $M$ is semifinite and admits a faithful, semifinite, normal trace which is invariant under the action of $G$.
The notion of operator amenability was introduced by Z.-J. Ruan in 1995. He showed that a locally compact group G is amenable if and only if its Fourier algebra A(G) is operator amenable. In this paper, we investigate the operator amenability of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra B(G) and of the reduced Fourier-Stieltjes algebra B_r(G). The natural conjecture is that any of these algebras is operator amenable if and only if G is compact. We partially prove this conjecture with mere operator amenability replaced by operator C-amenability for some constant C < 5. In the process, we obtain a new decom…
Amenable actions of locally compact groups on von Neumann algebras are investigated by exploiting the natural module structure of the crossed product over the Fourier algebra of the acting group. The resulting characterisation of injectivity for crossed products generalises a result of Anantharaman-Delaroche on discrete groups. Amenable actions of locally compact groups on $C^*$-algebras are investigated in the same way, and amenability of the action is related to nuclearity of the corresponding crossed product. A survey is given to show that this notion of amenable action for $C^*$-algebras s…
We show that for a connected Lie group $G$, its Fourier algebra $A(G)$ is weakly amenable only if $G$ is abelian. Our main new idea is to show that weak amenability of $A(G)$ implies that the anti-diagonal, $\checkΔ_G=\{(g,g^{-1}):g\in G\}$, is a set of local synthesis for $A(G\times G)$. We then show that this cannot happen if $G$ is non-abelian. We conclude for a locally compact group $G$, that $A(G)$ can be weakly amenable only if it contains no closed connected non-abelian Lie subgroups. In particular, for a Lie group $G$, $A(G)$ is weakly amenable if and only if its connected component of…
A QSIN group is a locally compact group $G$ whose group algebra $L^1(G)$ admits a quasi-central bounded approximate identity. Examples of QSIN groups include every amenable group and every discrete group. It is shown that if $G$ is a QSIN group, $H$ is a closed subgroup of $G$, and $π$ is a unitary representation of $H$, then $π$ is weakly contained in $(\mathrm{Ind}_H^Gπ)|_H$. This provides a powerful tool in studying the C*-algebras of QSIN groups. In particular, it is shown that if $G$ is a QSIN group which contains a copy of $\mathbb F_2$ as a closed subgroup, then $C^*(G)$ is not locally …
Using ultrapowers of $C^{\ast}$-algebras we provide a new construction of the multiplier algebra of a $C^{\ast}$-algebra. This extends the work of Avsec and Goldbring [Houston J. Math., to appear, arXiv:1610.09276.] to the setting of noncommutative and nonseparable $C^{\ast}$-algebras. We also extend their work to give a new proof of the fact that groups that act transitively on locally finite trees with boundary amenable stabilizers are boundary amenable.
The notion of an action of a locally compact quantum group on a von Neumann algebra is studied from the amenability point of view. Various Reiter's conditions for such an action are discussed. Several applications to some specific actions related to certain representations and corepresentaions are presented.
Let $G$ be a locally compact group, and let $A_\cb(G)$ denote the closure of $A(G)$, the Fourier algebra of $G$, in the space of completely bounded multipliers of $A(G)$. If $G$ is a weakly amenable, discrete group such that $\cstar(G)$ is residually finite-dimensional, we show that $A_\cb(G)$ is operator amenable. In particular, $A_\cb(F_2)$ is operator amenable even though $F_2$, the free group in two generators, is not an amenable group. Moreover, we show that, if $G$ is a discrete group such that $A_\cb(G)$ is operator amenable, a closed ideal of $A(G)$ is weakly completely complemented in…
Let $G$ be second countable locally compact Hausdorff groupoid with a continuous Haar system. We remove the assumption of amenability in a theorem by Clark about GCR groupoid $C^*$-algebras. We show that if the groupoid $C^*$-algebra of $G$ is GCR then the orbits of $G$ are locally closed.
It is known that exactness for a discrete group is equivalent to C*-exactness, i.e., the exactness of its reduced C*-algebra. The problem of whether this equivalence holds for general locally compact groups has recently been reduced by Cave and Zacharias to the case of totally disconnected unimodular groups. We prove that the equivalence does hold for a class of groups that includes all locally compact groups with reduced C*-algebra admitting a tracial state. As a consequence, we present original proofs that totally disconnected locally compact (tdlc) invariant-neighbourhood (IN) groups and a …
