We study stability properties of amenable locally compact quantum groups under the bicrossed product construction. We obtain as our main result an equivalence between amenability of the bicrossed product and amenability of the matched quantum groups used as building ingredients of the bicrossed product. Finally, we give examples of non-amenable locally compact quantum groups obtained by a bicrossed product construction.
We make a comprehensive and self-contained study of compact bicrossed products arising from matched pairs of discrete groups and compact groups. We exhibit an automatic regularity property of such a matched pair and and produce an easy construction of the associated bicrossed product $\mathbb{G}$. We investigate the relative co-property $(T)$ and the relative co-Haagerup property of the pair comprising of the compact group and the bicrossed product, discuss property $(T)$ and Haagerup property of the discrete dual $\widehat{\mathbb{G}}$, and review co-amenability of $\mathbb{G}$ as well. We di…
We study the rapid decay property and polynomial growth for duals of bicrossed products coming from a matched pair of a discrete group and a compact group
In the framework of locally compact quantum groups, we study cocycle actions. We develop the cocycle bicrossed product construction, starting from a matched pair of locally compact quantum groups. We define exact sequences and establish a one-to-one correspondence between cocycle bicrossed products and cleft extensions. In this way, we obtain new examples of locally compact quantum groups.
By working with several specific Poisson-Lie groups arising from Heisenberg Lie bialgebras and by carrying out their quantizations, a case is made for a useful but simple method of constructing locally compact quantum groups. The strategy is to analyze and collect enough information from a Poisson-Lie group, and using it to carry out a ``cocycle bicrossed product construction''. Constructions are done using multiplicative unitary operators, obtaining C*-algebraic, locally compact quantum (semi-)groups.
We study the Kac cohomology for matched pairs of locally compact groups. This cohomology theory arises from the extension theory of locally compact quantum groups. We prove a topological version of the Kac exact sequence and provide methods to compute the cohomology. We give explicit calculations in several examples using results of Moore and Wigner.
The main aim of this paper is to introduce some examples of non-compact locally compact quantum groups to a non-specialized audience. The major importance of these examples is their simplicity. Other examples as the quantum E(2) group of Woronowicz are much more difficult to construct. We will make use of the bicrossed product construction to obtain our examples. This construction dates back to Kac, Takeuchi and Majid. It was also considered by Baaj & Skandalis.
The cocycle bicrossed product construction allows certain freedom in producing examples of locally compact quantum groups. We give an overview of some recent examples of this kind having remarkable properties.
Let $G$ be a group which admits a generating set consisting of finite order elements. We prove that any Hopf algebra which factorizes through the Taft algebra and the group Hopf algebra $K[G]$ (equivalently, any bicrossed product between the aforementioned Hopf algebras) is isomorphic to a smash product between the same two Hopf algebras. The classification of these smash products is shown to be strongly linked to the problem of describing the group automorphisms of $G$. As an application, we completely describe by generators and relations and classify all bicrossed products between the Taft a…
We construct a Hopf action, with an invariant trace, of a bicrossed product Hopf algebra $\cH=\big( \cU(\Fg_1) \acr \cR(G_2) \big)^{\cop}$ constructed from a matched pair of Lie groups $G_1$ and $G_2$, on a convolution algebra $\cA=C_c^{\ify}(G_1)\rtimes G_2^δ$. We give an explicit way to construct Hopf cyclic cohomology classes of our Hopf algebra $\cH$ and then realize these classes in terms of explicit representative cocycles in the cyclic cohomology of the convolution algebra $\cA$.
We classify all Hopf algebras which factorize through two Taft algebras $\mathbb{T}_{n^{2}}(\bar{q})$ and respectively $T_{m^{2}}(q)$. To start with, all possible matched pairs between the two Taft algebras are described: if $\bar{q} \neq q^{n-1}$ then the matched pairs are in bijection with the group of $d$-th roots of unity in $k$, where $d = (m,\,n)$ while if $\bar{q} = q^{n-1}$ then besides the matched pairs above we obtain an additional family of matched pairs indexed by $k^{*}$. The corresponding bicrossed products (double cross product in Majid's terminology) are explicitly described by…
In this paper we continue the study started recently in \cite{ABMbp} by describing and classifying all Hopf algebras $E$ that factorize through two Sweedler's Hopf algebras. Equivalently, we classify all bicrossed products $H_4 \bowtie H_4$. There are three steps in our approach. First, we explicitly describe the set of all matched pairs $(H_4, H_4, \triangleright, \triangleleft)$ by proving that, with the exception of the trivial pair, this set is parameterized by the ground field $k$. Then, for any $λ\in k$, we describe by generators and relations the associated bicrossed product, \mathcal{H…
We introduce a new invariant of tangles along with an algebraic framework in which to understand it. We claim that the invariant contains the classical Alexander polynomial of knots and its multivariable extension to links. We argue that of the computationally efficient members of the family of Alexander invariants, it is the most meaningful. These are lecture notes for talks given by the first author, written and completed by the second. The talks, with handouts and videos, are available at http://www.math.toronto.edu/drorbn/Talks/Regina-1206/. See also further comments at http://www.math.tor…
Let $A$ and $H$ be two Hopf algebras. We shall classify up to an isomorphism that stabilizes $A$ all Hopf algebras $E$ that factorize through $A$ and $H$ by a cohomological type object ${\mathcal H}^{2} (A, H)$. Equivalently, we classify up to a left $A$-linear Hopf algebra isomorphism, the set of all bicrossed products $A \bowtie H$ associated to all possible matched pairs of Hopf algebras $(A, H, \triangleleft, \triangleright)$ that can be defined between $A$ and $H$. In the construction of ${\mathcal H}^{2} (A, H)$ the key role is played by special elements of $CoZ^{1} (H, A) \times \Aut_{\…
In this dissertation we study the coefficients spaces (SAYD modules) of Hopf-cyclic cohomology theory over a certain family of bicrossed product Hopf algebras, and we compute the Hopf-cyclic cohomology of such Hopf algebras with coefficients. We associate a Hopf algebra, what we call a Lie-Hopf algebra, to any matched pair of Lie groups, Lie algebras and affine algebraic groups via the semi-dualization procedure of Majid. We then identify the SAYD modules over Lie-Hopf algebras with the representations and corepresentations of the total Lie group, Lie algebra or the affine algebraic group of t…
For a matched pair of locally compact quantum groups, we construct the double crossed product as a locally compact quantum group. This construction generalizes Drinfeld's quantum double construction. We study C*-algebraic properties of these double crossed products and several links between double crossed products and bicrossed products. In an appendix, we study the Radon-Nikodym derivative of a weight under a quantum group action, following Yamanouchi and obtain, as a corollary, a new characterization of closed quantum subgroups.
We show that bicrossed product Hopf algebras arising from exact factorizations in almost simple finite groups, so in particular, in simple and symmetric groups, admit no quasitriangular structure.
In this paper, we study C*-algebraic quantum groups obtained through the bicrossed product construction. Examples using groups of adeles are given and they provide the first examples of locally compact quantum groups which are not semi-regular: the crossed product of the quantum group acting on itself by translations does not contain any compact operator. We describe all corepresentations of these quantum groups and the associated universal C*-algebras. On the way, we provide several remarks on C*-algebraic properties of quantum groups and their actions.
Beginning with a skew-symmetric matrix, we define a certain Poisson--Lie group. Its Poisson bracket can be viewed as a cocycle perturbation of the linear (or "Lie-Poisson") Poisson bracket. By analyzing this Poisson structure, we gather enough information to construct a C*-algebraic locally compact quantum group, via the "cocycle bicrossed product construction" method. The quantum group thus obtained is shown to be a deformation quantization of the Poisson-Lie group, in the sense of Rieffel.
We establish two conditions equivalent to coamenability for type I locally compact quantum groups. The first condition is concerned with the spectra of certain convolution operators on the space $\operatorname{L}^2(\operatorname{Irr}(\mathbb{G}))$ of functions which are square integrable with respect to the Plancherel measure. The second condition involves spectra of character-like operators associated with direct integrals of irreducible representations. As examples we study special classes of quantum groups: classical, dual to classical, compact or given by a certain bicrossed product constr…
We prove several results on the permanence of weak amenability and the Haagerup property for discrete quantum groups. In particular, we improve known facts on free products by allowing amalgamation over a finite quantum subgroup. We also define a notion of relative amenability for discrete quantum groups and link it with amenable equivalence of von Neumann algebras, giving additional permanence properties.
We associate Popa systems (= standard invariants of subfactors) to the finite dimensional representations of compact quantum groups. We characterise the systems arising in this way: these are the ones which can be ``represented'' on finite dimensional Hilbert spaces. This is proved by an universal construction. We explicitely compute (in terms of some free products) the operation of going from representations of compact quantum groups to Popa systems and then back via the universal construction. We prove a Kesten type result for the co-amenability of compact quantum groups, which allows us to …
We study analogues of the radial subalgebras in free group factors (called the algebras of class functions) in the setting of compact quantum groups. For the free orthogonal quantum groups we show that they are not MASAs, as soon as we are in a non-Kac situation. The most important notion to our present work is that of a (quasi-)split inclusion. We prove that the inclusion of the algebra of class functions is quasi-split for some unitary quantum groups; in this case the subalgebra is non-abelian and we also obtain a result concerning its relative commutant. In the positive direction, we constr…
The well known "associativity property" of the crossed product by a semi-direct product of discrete groups is generalized into the context of discrete \emph{quantum} groups. This decomposition allows to define an appropriate triangulated functor relating the Baum-Connes property for the quantum semi-direct product to the Baum-Connes property for the discrete quantum groups involved in the construction. The corresponding stability result for the Baum-Connes property generalizes a result of J. Chabert for a quantum semi-direct product under torsion-freeness assumption. The $K$-amenability connex…
We give examples of finite quantum permutation groups which arise from the twisting construction or as bicrossed products associated to exact factorizations in finite groups. We also give examples of finite quantum groups which are not quantum permutation groups: one such example occurs as a split abelian extension associated to the exact factorization $\mathbb S_4 = \mathbb Z_4 \mathbb S_3$ and has dimension 24. We show that, in fact, this is the smallest possible dimension that a non quantum permutation group can have.
We investigate connections between various rigidity and softness properties for discrete quantum groups. After introducing a notion of residual finiteness, we show that it implies the Kirchberg factorization property for the discrete quantum group in question. We also prove the analogue of Kirchberg's theorem, to the effect that conversely, the factorization property and property (T) jointly imply residual finiteness. We also apply these results to certain classes of discrete quantum groups obtained by means of bicrossed product constructions and study the preservation of the properties (facto…
Continuing our research on extensions of locally compact quantum groups, we give a classification of all cocycle matched pairs of Lie algebras in small dimensions and prove that all of them can be exponentiated to cocycle matched pairs of Lie groups. Hence, all of them give rise to locally compact quantum groups by the cocycle bicrossed product construction. We also clarify the notion of an extension of locally compact quantum groups by relating it to the concept of a closed normal quantum subgroup and the quotient construction. Finally, we describe the infinitesimal objects of locally compact…
In this short article, we obtained some equivalent formulations of property $T$ for a general locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$, in terms of the full quantum group $C^*$-algebras $C_0^\mathrm{u}(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$ and the $*$-representation of $C_0^\mathrm{u}(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$ associated with the trivial unitary corepresentation (that generalize the corresponding results for locally compact groups). Moreover, if $\mathbb{G}$ is of Kac type, we show that $\mathbb{G}$ has property $T$ if and only if every finite dimensional irreducible $*$-representation of $C_0^\mathrm{u}(\wid…
We compute the quantum double, braiding and other canonical Hopf algebra constructions for the bicrossproduct Hopf algebra $H$ associated to the factorization of a finite group into two subgroups. The representations of the quantum double are described by a notion of bicrossed bimodules, generalising the cross modules of Whitehead. We also show that self-duality structures for the bicrossproduct Hopf algebras are in one-one correspondence with factor-reversing group isomorphisms. The example $Z_6Z_6$ is given in detail. We show further that the quantum double $D(H)$ is the twisting of $D(X)$ b…
Let A be a Hopf algebra and H a coalgebra. We shall describe and classify up to an isomorphism all Hopf algebras E that factorize through A and H: that is E is a Hopf algebra such that A is a Hopf subalgebra of E, H is a subcoalgebra in E with 1_{E} \in H and the multiplication map $A\otimes H \to E$ is bijective. The tool we use is a new product, we call it the unified product, in the construction of which A and H are connected by three coalgebra maps: two actions and a generalized cocycle. Both the crossed product of an Hopf algebra acting on an algebra and the bicrossed product of two Hopf …
In this paper, we find the fusion rules for the free wreath product quantum groups $\mathbb{G}\wr_*S_N^+$ for all compact matrix quantum groups of Kac type $\mathbb{G}$ and $N\ge4$. This is based on a combinatorial description of the intertwiner spaces between certain generating representations of $\mathbb{G}\wr_*S_N^+$. The combinatorial properties of the intertwiner spaces in $\mathbb{G}\wr_*S_N^+$ then allows us to obtain several probabilistic applications. We then prove the monoidal equivalence between $\mathbb{G}\wr_*S_N^+$ and a compact quantum group whose dual is a discrete quantum subg…
We study representations of the mapping class group of the punctured torus on the double of a finite dimensional possibly non-semisimple Hopf algebra that arise in the construction of universal, extended topological field theories. We discuss how for doubles the degeneracy problem of TQFT's is circumvented. We find compact formulae for the ${\cal S}^{\pm 1}$-matrices using the canonical, non degenerate forms of Hopf algebras and the bicrossed structure of doubles rather than monodromy matrices. A rigorous proof of the modular relations and the computation of the projective phases is supplied u…
