It is known that exactness for a discrete group is equivalent to C*-exactness, i.e., the exactness of its reduced C*-algebra. The problem of whether this equivalence holds for general locally compact groups has recently been reduced by Cave and Zacharias to the case of totally disconnected unimodular groups. We prove that the equivalence does hold for a class of groups that includes all locally compact groups with reduced C*-algebra admitting a tracial state. As a consequence, we present original proofs that totally disconnected locally compact (tdlc) invariant-neighbourhood (IN) groups and a class of groups introduced by Suzuki satisfy the equivalence problem, without using inner amenability.
We define a numerical quasi-isometry invariant of a finitely generated group, whose values parametrize the difference between the group being uniformly embeddable in a Hilbert space and the reduced C*-algebra of the group being exact.
We define Ozawa's notion of bi-exactness to discrete quantum groups, and then prove some structural properties of associated von Neumann algebras. In particular, we prove that any non amenable subfactor of free quantum group von Neumann algebras, which is an image of a faithful normal conditional expectation, has no Cartan subalgebras.
It is proved that a discrete group G is exact if and only if its left translation action on the Stone-Cech compactification is amenable. Combining this with an unpublished result of Gromov, we have the existence of non exact discrete groups.
In this paper we show that if a discrete group $G$ acts properly isometrically on a discrete space $X$ for which the uniform Roe algebra $C_u^*(X)$ is exact then $G$ is an exact group. As a corollary, we note that if the action is cocompact then the following are equivalent: The space $X$ has Yu's property A; $C^*_u(X)$ is exact; $C_u^*(X)$ is nuclear.
We study the C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras associated with the universal discrete quantum groups. They give rise to full prime factors and simple exact C*-algebras. The main tool in our work is the study of an amenable boundary action, yielding the Akemann-Ostrand property. Finally, this boundary can be identified with the Martin or the Poisson boundary of a quantum random walk.
Given a $C^*$-dynamical system $(A,G,α)$, with $G$ a discrete group, Schur $A$-multipliers and Herz--Schur $(A,G,α)$-multipliers are used to implement approximation properties, namely exactness and the strong operator approximation property (SOAP), of $A \rtimes_{α, r} G$. The resulting characterisations of exactness and SOAP of $A \rtimes_{α, r} G$ generalise the corresponding statements for the reduced group $C^*$-algebra.
Some completely positive maps on reduced amalgamated free products of C*-algebras are constructed; these allow a proof that the class of exact unital C*-algebras is closed under taking reduced amalgamated free products. Consequently, the class of exact discrete groups is closed under taking amalgamated free products.
A locally compact groupoid is said to be exact if its associated reduced crossed product functor is exact. In this paper, we establish some permanence properties of exactness, including generalizations of some known results for exact groups. Our primary goal is to show that exactness descends to certain types of closed subgroupoids, which in turn gives conditions under which the isotropy groups of an exact groupoid are guaranteed to be exact. As an initial step toward these results, we establish the exactness of any transformation groupoid associated to an action of an exact groupoid on a loca…
The theory of exact C*-algebras was introduced by Kirchberg and has been influential in recent development of C*-algebras. A fundamental result on exact C*-algebras is a local characterization of exactness. The notion of weakly exact von Neumann algebras was also introduced by Kirchberg. In this paper, we give a local characterization of weak exactness. As a corollary, we prove that a discrete group is exact if and only if its group von Neumann algebra is weakly exact. The proof naturally involves the operator space duality.
Let $\A$ be a unital separable nuclear $C^*$--algebra which belongs to the bootstrap category $\N$ and $\B$ be a separable stable $C^*$--algebra. In this paper, we consider the group $\Ext_u(\A,\B)$ consisting of the unitary equivalence classes of unital extensions $τ\colon\A\rightarrow Q(\B)$. The relation between $\Ext_u(\A,\B)$ and $\Ext(\A,\B)$ is established. Using this relation, we show the half--exactness of $\Ext_u(\cdot,\B)$ and the (UCT) for $\Ext_u(\A,\B)$. Furthermore, under certain conditions, we obtain the half--exactness and Bott periodicity of $\Ext_u(\A,\cdot)$.
A locally compact groupoid is said to have the weak containment property if its full $C^*$-algebra coincides with its reduced one. This property is strictly weaker than amenability and is known to be equivalent to amenability for transformation groupoids relative to actions of exact discrete groups. We believe that for general étale groupoids one should have the same equivalence of the two properties under some mild exactness assumption. In this paper we try to support this statement.
We construct explicit approximating nets for crossed products of C*-algebras by actions of discrete quantum groups. This implies that C*-algebraic approximation properties such as nuclearity, exactness or completely bounded approximation property are preserved by taking crossed products by actions of amenable discrete quantum groups. We also show that the noncommutative topological entropy of a transformation commuting with the quantum group action does not change when we pass to the canonical extension to the crossed product. Both these results are extended to twisted crossed products via a s…
It is shown by Houdayer-Isono that a group measure space von Neumann algebra is a full factor if the group is countable discrete and bi-exact, and the action is strongly ergodic, essentially free and non-singular. Recently, bi-exactness for locally compact groups was introduced by Brothier-Deprez-Vaes. In this paper, we will show that Houdayer-Isono type result holds for bi-exact locally compact groups.
Let (A,G) be a C*-dynamical system with G discrete. In this paper we investigate the ideal structure of the reduced crossed product C*-algebra and in particular we determine sufficient - and in some cases also necessary - conditions for A to separate the ideals in Ax_rG. When A separates the ideals in Ax_rG, then there is a one-to-one correspondence between the ideals in Ax_rG and the invariant ideals in A. We extend the concept of topological freeness and present a generalization of the Rokhlin property. Exactness properties of (A,G) turns out to be crucial in these investigations.
Let $Γ$ be a discrete group. A $C^*$-algebra $A$ is an exotic $C^*$-algebra (associated to $Γ$) if there exist proper surjective $C^*$-quotients $C^*(Γ)\to A\to C^*_r(Γ)$. In this paper, we show that a large class of exotic $C^*$-algebras have poor local properties. More precisely, we demonstrate the failure of local reflexitity, exactness, and local lifting property. Additionally, $A$ does not admit an amenable trace and, hence, is not quasidiagonal and does not have the WEP when $A$ is from the class of exotic $C^*$-algebras defined by Brown and Guentner. In order to achieve the main results…
Let X be a Hilbert bimodule over a C*-algebra A and $O_X= A \rtimes_X \Z$. Using a finite section method we construct a sequence of completely positive contractions factoring through matrix algebras over A which act on $s_ξ s_η^*$ as Schur multipliers converging to the identity. This shows immediately that for a finitely generated X the algebra $O_X$ inherits any standard approximation property such as nuclearity, exactness, CBAP or OAP from A. We generalise this to certain general Pimsner algebras by proving semi-splitness of the Toeplitz extension under certain conditions and discuss some ex…
Let α:G --> G be an endomorphism of a discrete amenable group such that [G:α(G)]<infinity. We study the structure of the C^* algebra generated by the left convolution operators acting on the left regular representation space, along with the isometry of the space induced by the endomorphism.
Let $B$ be a finite dimensional C$^\ast$-algebra equipped with its canonical trace induced by the regular representation of $B$ on itself. In this paper, we study various properties of the trace-preserving quantum automorphism group $\G$ of $B$. We prove that the discrete dual quantum group $\hG$ has the property of rapid decay, the reduced von Neumann algebra $L^\infty(\G)$ has the Haagerup property and is solid, and that $L^\infty(\G)$ is (in most cases) a prime type II$_1$-factor. As applications of these and other results, we deduce the metric approximation property, exactness, simplicity …
