This is the first part of a series of two papers where we study perturbations of divergence form second order elliptic operators $-\mathop{\operatorname{div}} A \nabla$ by first and zero order terms, whose coefficients lie in critical spaces, via the method of layer potentials. In particular, we show that the $L^2$ well-posedness of the Dirichlet, Neumann and Regularity problems for complex Hermitian, block form, or constant-coefficient divergence form elliptic operators in the upper half-space are all stable under such perturbations. For instance, this allows us to claim the first results in the setting of an unbounded domain concerning the solvability of boundary value problems for the magnetic Schrödinger operator $-(\nabla-i{\bf a})^2+V$ when the magnetic potential ${\bf a}$ and the electric potential $V$ are accordingly small in the norm of a scale-invariant Lebesgue space. In the present paper, we establish $L^2$ control of the square function via a vector-valued $Tb$ theorem and abstract layer potentials, and use these square function bounds to obtain uniform slice bounds for solutions. The existence and uniqueness of solutions, as well as bounds for the non-tangential maximal operator, are considered in the upcoming paper.
In this paper we approach the problem of perturbation from symmetry of strongly indefinite elliptic systems in dimension N>=3. We prove the existence of infinitely many solutions under suitable growth coinditions on the nonlinear terms.
In this paper, we deal with anisotropic singular perturbations of some class of elliptic problem. We study the asymptotic behavior of the solution in certain second order pseudo Sobolev space.
We present some new results concerning perturbation theory for positive solutions of second-order linear elliptic operators, including further study of the equivalence of positive minimal Green functions and the validity of a Liouville comparison principle for nonsymmetric operators.
In this article we study the asymptotic behavior, of the solution of a nonlinear elliptic, anisotropic singular perturbations problem in cylindrical domain, the limit problem is given and strong convergences are proved, we also give an application to intergo-differential problems.
In this paper we establish square-function estimates on the double and single layer potentials for divergence-form elliptic operators, of arbitrary even order 2m, with variable t-independent coefficients in the upper half-space. This generalizes known results for variable-coefficient second-order operators, and also for constant-coefficient higher-order operators.
In this paper, we provide a new means of establishing solvability of the Dirichlet problem on Lipschitz domains, with measurable data, for second order elliptic, non-symmetric divergence form operators. We show that a certain optimal Carleson measure estimate for bounded solutions of such operators implies a regularity result for the associated elliptic measure.
We present a small perturbation result for nonlocal elliptic equations, which says that for a class of nonlocal operators, the solutions are in $C^{σ+α}$ for any $α\in (0,1)$ as long as the solutions are small. This is a nonlocal generalization of a celebrated result of Savin in the case of second order equations.
In this article we give an extention of the L^2-theory of anisotropic singular perturbations for elliptic problems. We study a linear and some nonlinear problems involving L^p data (1<p<2). Convergences in pseudo Sobolev spaces are proved for weak and entropy solutions, and rate of convergence is given in cylindrical domains
We prove a general perturbation theorem that can be used to obtain pairs of nontrivial solutions of a wide range of local and nonlocal nonhomogeneous elliptic problems. Applications to critical $p$-Laplacian problems, $p$-Laplacian problems with critical Hardy-Sobolev exponents, critical fractional $p$-Laplacian problems, and critical $(p,q)$-Laplacian problems are given. Our results are new even in the semilinear case $p = 2$.
In this article, we deal with some problems involving a class of singularly perturbed elliptic operator. We prove the asymptotic preserving of a general Galerkin method associated to a semilinear problem. We use a particular Galerkin approximation to estimate the convergence rate on the whole domain, for the linear problem. Finally, we study the asymptotic behavior of the semigroup generated.
We discuss stability of square root domains for uniformly elliptic partial differential operators $L_{a,Ω,Γ} = -\nabla\cdot a \nabla$ in $L^2(Ω)$, with mixed boundary conditions on $\partial Ω$, with respect to additive perturbations. We consider open, bounded, and connected sets $Ω\in \mathbb{R}^n$, $n \in \mathbb{N} \backslash\{1\}$, that satisfy the interior corkscrew condition and prove stability of square root domains of the operator $L_{a,Ω,Γ}$ with respect to additive potential perturbations $V \in L^p(Ω) + L^{\infty}(Ω)$, $p>n/2$. Special emphasis is put on the case of uniformly ellipt…
We introduce and study a new functional which was motivated by our paper on the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality with variable exponent (Bahrouni, Rădulescu and Repovš, Nonlinearity 31 (2018), 1518-1534). We also study the eigenvalue problem for equations involving this new functional.
For a Jordan domain with sufficiently smooth boundaries, the solution to the Dirichlet problem for second order skew-symmetric strongly elliptic system with constant coefficients and regular enough boundary data is constructed in the form of a power series of a small parameter describing the perturbation of the given system from the Laplace one. The coefficients of this series are the functions that are determined sequentially as solutions to special Dirichlet problems for the usual Laplace and Poisson equations. The obtained series converges uniformly in the closure of the domain under consid…
We study the boundary regularity of solutions to divergence form operators which are small perturbations of operators for which the boundary regularity of solutions is known. An operator is a small perturbation of another operator if the deviation function of the coefficients satisfies a Carleson measure condition with small norm. We extend Escauriaza's result on Lipschitz domains to chord arc domains with small constant. In particular we prove that if $L_1$ is a small perturbation of $L_0$ and $\log k_0$ has small BMO norm so does $\log k_1$. Here $k_i$ denotes the density of the elliptic mea…
We construct clustering positive solutions for a perturbed critical elliptic equation on a closed manifold of dimension $n=4,5$. Such a construction is already available in the literature in dimensions $n\ge 6$ (see for instance [8,12,27,29,33]) and not possible in dimension $3$ by [25]. This also provides new patterns for the Lin--Ni [21] problem on closed manifolds and completes results by Brézis and Li [6] about this problem.
We study the vertical and conical square functions defined via elliptic operators in divergence form. In general, vertical and conical square functions are equivalent operators just in $L^2$. But when this square functions are defined through the heat or Poisson semigroup that arise from an elliptic operator, we are able to find open intervals containing $2$ where the equivalence holds. The intervals in question depend ultimately on the range where the semigroup is uniformly bounded or has off-diagonal estimates. As a consequence we obtain new boundedness results for some square functions. Bes…
This paper presents a variational approach to doubly-nonlinear (gradient) flows (P) of nonconvex energies along with nonpotential perturbations (i.e., perturbation terms without any potential structures). An elliptic-in-time regularization of the original equation ${\rm (P)}_\varepsilon$ is introduced, and then, a variational approach and a fixed-point argument are employed to prove existence of strong solutions to regularized equations. More precisely, we introduce a functional (defined for each entire trajectory and including a small approximation parameter $\varepsilon$) whose Euler-Lagrang…
We consider the following boundary value problem -Δu= g(x,u) + f(x,u) x\in Ω u=0 x\in \partial Ω where $g(x,-ξ)=-g(x,ξ)$ and $g$ has subcritical exponential growth in $\mathbb{R} ^2$. Using the method developed by Bolle, we prove that this problem has infinitely many solutions under suitable conditions on the growth of $g(u)$ and $f(u)$.
We consider the asymptotic solutions of an interface problem corresponding to an elliptic partial differential equation with Dirich- let boundary condition and transmission condition, subject to the small geometric perturbation and the high contrast ratio of the conductivity. We consider two types of perturbations: the first corresponds to a thin layer coating a fixed bounded domain and the second is the per perturbation of the interface. As the perturbation size tends to zero and the ratio of the conductivities in two subdomains tends to zero, the two-parameter asymptotic expansions on the fi…
We consider a singularly perturbed Dirichlet spectral problem for an elliptic operator of second order. The coefficients of the operator are assumed to be locally periodic and oscillating in the scale $\varepsilon$. We describe the leading terms of the asymptotics of the eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions to the problem, as the parameter $\varepsilon$ tends to zero, under structural assumptions on the potential. More precisely, we assume that the local average of the potential has a unique global minimum point in the interior of the domain and its Hessian is non-degenerate at this point.
We prove an analogue of a perturbation result for the Dirichlet problem of divergence form elliptic operators by Fefferman, Kenig and Pipher, for the degenerate elliptic operators of David, Feneuil and Mayboroda, which were developed to study geometric and analytic properties of sets with boundaries whose co-dimension is higher than $1$. These operators are of the form $-\text{div} A\nabla$, where $A$ is a weighted elliptic matrix crafted to weigh the distance to the high co-dimension boundary in a way that allows for the nourishment of an elliptic theory. When this boundary is a $d-$Alhfors-D…
We consider second order elliptic divergence form systems with complex measurable coefficients $A$ that are independent of the transversal coordinate, and prove that the set of $A$ for which the boundary value problem with $L_2$ Dirichlet or Neumann data is well posed, is an open set. Furthermore we prove that these boundary value problems are well posed when $A$ is either Hermitean, block or constant. Our methods apply to more general systems of PDEs and as an example we prove perturbation results for boundary value problems for differential forms.
We prove a sharp three sphere inequality for solutions to third order perturbations of a product of two second order elliptic operators with real coefficients. Then we derive various kinds of quantitative estimates of unique continuation for the anisotropic plate equation. Among these, we prove a stability estimate for the Cauchy problem for such an equation and we illustrate some applications to the size estimates of an unknown inclusion made of different material that might be present in the plate. The paper is self-contained and the Carleman estimate, from which the sharp three sphere inequ…
We consider singular perturbations of elliptic systems depending on a parameter ? such that, for ? = 0 the boundary conditions are not adapted to the equation (they do not satisfy the Shapiro - Lopatinskii condition). The limit holds only in very abstract spaces out of distribu- tion theory involving complexi?cation and non-local phenomena. This system appears in the thin shell theory when the middle surface is el- liptic and the shell is fixed on a part of the boundary and free on the rest. We use a heuristic reasoning applying some simplifications which allow to reduce the original problem i…
In this paper we study boundary value problems for higher order elliptic differential operators in divergence form. We consider the two closely related topics of inhomogeneous problems and problems with boundary data in fractional smoothness spaces. We establish $L^\infty$ perturbative results concerning well posedness of inhomogeneous problems with boundary data in fractional smoothness spaces. Combined with earlier known results, this allows us to establish new well posedness results for second order operators whose coefficients are close to being real and t-independent and for fourth-order …
Boundary value problem for complete second order elliptic equation is considered in Banach space. The equation and boundary conditions involve a small and spectral parameter. The uniform L_{p}-regularity properties with respect to space variable and parameters are established. Here, the explicit formula for the solution is given and behavior of solution is derived when the small parameter approaches zero. It used to obtain singular perturbation result for abstract elliptic equation
This paper is devoted to the study of a class of singular perturbation elliptic type problems on compact Lie groups or homogeneous spaces $\mathcal{M}$. By constructing a suitable Nash-Moser-type iteration scheme on compact Lie groups and homogeneous spaces, we overcome the clusters of "small divisor" problem, then the existence of solutions for nonlinear elliptic equations with a singular perturbation is established. Especially, if $\mathcal{M}$ is the standard torus $\textbf{T}^n$ or the spheres $\textbf{S}^n$, our result shows that there is a local uniqueness of spatially periodic solutions…
We study the dependence of least nontrivial critical levels of the energy functional corresponding to the zero Dirichlet problem $-Δ_p u = f(u)$ in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ upon domain perturbations. Assuming that the nonlinearity $f$ is superlinear and subcritical, we establish Hadamard-type formulas for such critical levels. As an application, we show that among all (generally eccentric) spherical annuli $Ω$ least nontrivial critical levels attain maximum if and only if $Ω$ is concentric. As a consequence of this fact, we prove the nonradiality of least energy nodal solutions…
We extend in two directions the notion of perturbations of Carleson type for the Dirichlet problem associated to an elliptic real second-order divergence-form (possibly degenerate, not necessarily symmetric) elliptic operator. First, in addition to the classical perturbations of Carleson type, that we call additive Carleson perturbations, we introduce scalar-multiplicative and antisymmetric Carleson perturbations, which both allow non-trivial differences at the boundary. Second, we consider domains which admit an elliptic PDE in a broad sense: we count as examples the 1-sided NTA (a.k.a. unifo…
We consider an elliptic PDE in two variables. As one parameter approaches zero, this PDE collapses to a parabolic one, that is forward parabolic in a part of the domain and backward parabolic in the remainder. Such problems arise naturally in various stochastic models, such as fluid models for data-handling systems and Markov-modulated queues. We employ singular perturbation methods to study the problem for small values of the parameter.
This is the final part of a series of papers where we study perturbations of divergence form second order elliptic operators $-\operatorname{div} A \nabla$ by first and zero order terms, whose complex coefficients lie in critical spaces, via the method of layer potentials. In particular, we show that the $L^2$ well-posedness (with natural non-tangential maximal function estimates) of the Dirichlet, Neumann and regularity problems for complex Hermitian, block form, or constant-coefficient divergence form elliptic operators in the upper half-space are all stable under such perturbations. Due to …
We establish a Dahlberg-type perturbation theorem for second order divergence form elliptic operators with complex coefficients. In our previous paper, we showed the following result: If ${\mathcal L}_0=\mbox{div} A^0(x)\nabla+B^0(x)\cdot\nabla$ is a $p$-elliptic operator satisfying certain Carleson condition on $\nabla A$ and $B$ then the $L^p$ Dirichlet problem for the operator ${\mathcal L}_0$ is solvable in the upper half-space ${\mathbb R}^n_+$. In this paper we prove that the $L^p$ solvability is stable under small perturbations of ${\mathcal L}_0$. That is if ${\mathcal L}_1$ is another…
We establish existence and pointwise estimates of fundamental solutions and Green's matrices for divergence form, second order strongly elliptic systems in a domain $Ω\subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$, $n \geq 3$, under the assumption that solutions of the system satisfy De Giorgi-Nash type local Hölder continuity estimates. In particular, our results apply to perturbations of diagonal systems, and thus especially to complex perturbations of a single real equation.
In this paper we prove the existence of a nonnegative ground state solution to the following class of coupled systems involving Schrödinger equations with square root of the Laplacian $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{lr} (-Δ)^{1/2}u+V_{1}(x)u=f_{1}(u)+λ(x)v, & x\in\mathbb{R}, (-Δ)^{1/2}v+V_{2}(x)v=f_{2}(v)+λ(x)u, & x\in\mathbb{R}, \end{array} \right. $$ where the nonlinearities $f_{1}(s)$ and $f_{2}(s)$ have exponential critical growth of the Trudinger-Moser type, the potentials $V_{1}(x)$ and $V_{2}(x)$ are nonnegative and periodic. Moreover, we assume that there exists $δ\in (0,1)$ such that $λ(x)\l…
We prove rate of convergence results for singular perturbations of Hamilton-Jacobi equations in unbounded spaces where the fast operator is linear, uniformly elliptic and has an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck-type drift. The slow operator is a fully nonlinear elliptic operator while the source term is assumed only locally Hölder continuous in both fast and slow variables. We obtain several rates of convergence according on the regularity of the source term.
In this paper we deal with nonnegative distributional supersolutions for a class of linear elliptic equations involving inverse-square potentials and logarithmic weights. We prove sharp nonexistence results.
We propose a least squares Galerkin based gradient recovery to approximate Dirichlet problems for strong solutions of linear elliptic problems in nondivergence form and corresponding apriori and aposteriori error bounds. This approach is used to tackle fully nonlinear elliptic problems, e.g., Monge-Ampère, Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman, using the smooth (vanilla) and the semismooth Newton linearization. We discuss numerical results, including adaptive methods based on the aposteriori error indicators.
This is the first part of a series of three articles. In this paper, we obtain weighted norm inequalities for different conical square functions associated with the Heat and the Poisson semigroups generated by a second order divergence form elliptic operator with bounded complex coefficients. We find classes of Muckenhoupt weights where the square functions are comparable and/or bounded. These classes are natural from the point of view of the ranges where the unweighted estimates hold. In doing that, we obtain sharp weighted change of angle formulas which allow us to compare conical square fun…
In this paper we study nonexistence of non-negative distributional supersolutions for a class of semilinear elliptic equations involving inverse-square potentials.
We study the behavior of the solutions $u$ of the linear Dirichlet problems $- \mathrm{div} (M(x) \nabla u) + a(x) u = f(x)$ with respect to perturbations of the matrix $M(x)$ (with respect to the $G$-convergence) and with respect to perturbations of the nonnegative coefficient $a(x)$ and of the right hand side $f(x)$ satisfying the condition $|f (x)| \leq Q \, a (x)$.
Let $Ω$ be a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$, with $N\geq 5$, $a>0$, $α\geq 0$ and $2^*=\frac{2N}{N-2}$. We show that the the exponent $q=\frac{2(N-1)}{N-2}$ plays a critical role regarding the existence of least energy (or ground state) solutions of the Neumann problem $$ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu+au=u^{2^*-1}-αu^{q-1}&\mbox{in}\ Ω,\\ u>0&\mbox{in}\ Ω,\\ \frac{\partial u}{\partialν}=0&\mbox{on}\ \partialΩ. \end{array}\right. $$ Namely, we prove that when $q=\frac{2(N-1)}{N-2}$ there exists an $α_{0}>0$ such that the problem has a least energy solution if $α<α_{0}$ and has no leas…
We consider the operator $L=-{\rm div}(A\nabla)$, where the $n\times n$ matrix $A$ is real-valued, elliptic, with the symmetric part of $A$ in $L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n)$, and the anti-symmetric part of $A$ only belongs to the space $BMO(\mathbb{R}^n)$, $n\ge2$. We prove the Gaussian estimates for the kernel of $e^{-tL}$, as well as that of $\partial_t^le^{-tL}$, for any $l\in\mathbb{N}$. We show that the square root of $L$ satisfies the $L^p$ estimates $\left\Vert{L^{1/2}f}\right\Vert_{L^p}\lesssim\left\Vert{\nabla f}\right\Vert_{L^p}$ for $1<p<\infty$, and $\left\Vert{\nabla f}\right\Vert_{L^p}…
We examine the Hénon equation $ -Δu =|x|^αu^p$ in $ Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ with $u=0$ on $ \partial Ω$ where $ 0 < α$. We show there exists a sequence $ \{p_k\}_k \subset [ \frac{N+2}{N-2}, p_α(N)]$ with $p_1 < p_2 <p_3 < ...$, $ p_k \nearrow p_α(N)$ such that for any $ \frac{N+2}{N-2} \le p < p_α(N)$, which avoids $ \{p_k\}_k $, there exists a positive classical solution of the Hénon equation, provided $ Ω$ is a sufficiently small perturbation of the unit ball. We also examine the Lane-Emden-Fowler equation in the case of an exterior domain; ie. $ -Δu = u^p$ in $ Ω$, an exterior domain, with …
We consider divergence form elliptic operators L = - div A(x)\nabla, defined in the half space R^{n+1}_+, n \geq 2, where the coefficient matrix A(x) is bounded, measurable, uniformly elliptic, t-independent, and not necessarily symmetric. We establish square function/non-tangential maximal function estimates for solutions of the homogeneous equation Lu = 0, and we then combine these estimates with the method of "ε-approximability" to show that L-harmonic measure is absolutely continuous with respect to surface measure (i.e., n-dimensional Lebesgue measure) on the boundary, in a scale-invarian…
We find for small $ε$ positive solutions to the equation \[-\textrm{div} (|x|^{-2a}\nabla u)-\displaystyle{\fracλ{|x|^{2(1+a)}}} u= \Big(1+εk(x)\Big)\frac{u^{p-1}}{|x|^{bp}}\] in ${\mathbb{R}}^N$, which branch off from the manifold of minimizers in the class of radial functions of the corresponding Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg type inequality. Moreover, our analysis highlights the symmetry-breaking phenomenon in these inequalities, namely the existence of non-radial minimizers.
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, be a 1-sided chord-arc domain, that is, a domain which satisfies interior Corkscrew and Harnack Chain conditions (these are respectively scale-invariant/quantitative versions of the openness and path-connectedness), and whose boundary $\partialΩ$ is $n$-dimensional Ahlfors regular. Consider $L_0$ and $L$ two real symmetric divergence form elliptic operators and let $ω_{L_0}$, $ω_L$ be the associated elliptic measures. We show that if $ω_{L_0}\in A_\infty(σ)$, where $σ=H^n|_{\partialΩ}$, and $L$ is a perturbation of $L_0$ (in the sense that the discrepa…
We propose a least-squares method involving the recovery of the gradient and possibly the Hessian for elliptic equation in nondivergence form. As our approach is based on the Lax--Milgram theorem with the curl-free constraint built into the target (or cost) functional, the discrete spaces require no inf-sup stabilization. We show that standard conforming finite elements can be used yielding apriori and aposteriori convergnece results. We illustrate our findings with numerical experiments with uniform or adaptive mesh refinement.
This article focuses on Lp-estimates for the square root of elliptic systems of second order in divergence form on a bounded domain. We treat complex bounded measurable coefficients and allow for mixed Dirichlet/Neumann boundary conditions on domains beyond the Lipschitz class. If there is an associated bounded semigroup on Lp0 , then we prove that the square root extends for all p $\in$ (p0, 2) to an isomorphism between a closed subspace of W1p carrying the boundary conditions and Lp. This result is sharp and extrapolates to exponents slightly above 2. As a byproduct, we obtain an optimal p-i…
In this paper we give sufficient conditions on $α\geq 0$ and $c\in \mathbb{R}$ ensuring that the space of test functions $C_c^\infty(\mathbb{R}^N)$ is a core for the operator $$L_0u=(1+|x|^α)Δu+\frac{c}{|x|^2}u=:Lu+\frac{c}{|x|^2}u,$$ and $L_0$ with suitable domain generates a quasi-contractive and positivity preserving $C_0$-semigroup in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^N),\,1<p<\infty$. The proofs are based on some $L^p$-weighted Hardy's inequality and perturbation techniques.
In this paper we analyze the relaxed form of a shape optimization problem with state equation $\{{array}{ll} -div \big(a(x)Du\big)=f\qquad\hbox{in}D \hbox{boundary conditions on}\partial D. {array}.$ The new fact is that the term $f$ is only known up to a random perturbation $ξ(x,ω)$. The goal is to find an optimal coefficient $a(x)$, fulfilling the usual constraints $α\le a\leβ$ and $\displaystyle\int_D a(x) dx\le m$, which minimizes a cost function of the form $$\int_Ω\int_Dj\big(x,ω,u_a(x,ω)\big) dx dP(ω).$$ Some numerical examples are shown in the last section, to stress the difference wit…
