In this paper we approach the problem of perturbation from symmetry of strongly indefinite elliptic systems in dimension N>=3. We prove the existence of infinitely many solutions under suitable growth coinditions on the nonlinear terms.
We investigate positive steady states of an indefinite superlinear reaction-diffusion equation arising from population dynamics, coupled with a nonlinear boundary condition. Both the equation and the boundary condition depend upon a positive parameter $λ$, which is inversely proportional to the diffusion rate. We establish several multiplicity results when the diffusion rate is large and analyze the asymptotic profiles and the stability properties of these steady states as the diffusion rate grows to infinity. In particular, our results show that in some cases bifurcation from zero and from in…
In this paper, we consider the indefinite fractional elliptic problem. A corresponding Liouville-type theorem for the indefinite fractional elliptic equations is established. Furthermore, we obtain a priori bound for solutions in a bounded domain by blowing-up and re-scaling. We also classify the solutions of some degenerate elliptic equation originated from fractional Laplacian.
In this paper we discuss the existence and regularity of solutions of strongly indefinite systems involving fractional elliptic operators on a smooth bounded domain $Ω$ in $\R^n$.
We define some Nehari-type constraints using an orthogonal decomposition of the Sobolev space $H^1_0$ and prove the existence of multibump nodal solutions for an indefinite superlinear elliptic problem.
We are concerned with the multiplicity of positive solutions for the singular superlinear and subcritical Schrödinger equation $$ \begin{array}{c} -Δu +V(x)u=λa(x)u^{-γ}+b(x)u^{p}~\mbox{in}~ \mathbb{R}^{N}, \end{array} $$ beyond the Nehari extremal value, as defined in Il'yasov [Topol. Methods Nonlinear Anal., 2017], when the potential $b \in L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^{N})$ may change its sign, $0<a\in L^{\frac{2}{1+γ}}(\mathbb{R}^{N})$, $V$ is a positive continuous function, $N\geq 3$ and $λ>0$ is a real parameter. The main difficulties come from the non-differentiability of the energy functional…
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb R^N$, $N \geq 2$, be a smooth bounded domain. We consider a boundary value problem of the form $$-Δu = c_λ(x) u + μ(x) |\nabla u|^2 + h(x), \quad u \in H^1_0(Ω)\cap L^{\infty}(Ω)$$ where $c_λ$ depends on a parameter $λ\in \mathbb R$, the coefficients $c_λ$ and $h$ belong to $L^q(Ω)$ with $q>N/2$ and $μ\in L^{\infty}(Ω)$. Under suitable assumptions, but without imposing a sign condition on any of these coefficients, we obtain an a priori upper bound on the solutions. Our proof relies on a new boundary weak Harnack inequality. This inequality, which is of independent intere…
We establish a positivity property for a class of semilinear elliptic problems involving indefinite sublinear nonlinearities. Namely, we show that any nontrivial nonnegative solution is positive for a class of problems the strong maximum principle does not apply to. Our approach is based on a continuity argument combined with variational techniques, the sub and supersolutions method and some a priori bounds. Both Dirichlet and Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions are considered. As a byproduct, we deduce some existence and uniqueness results. Finally, as an application, we derive some posit…
The aim of this paper is analyzing existence, multiplicity, and regularity issues for the positive solutions of a Neumann boundary value problem of superlinear indefinite type related to the mean curvature operator with a sublinear potential at infinity.
This paper is concerned with the following system of elliptic equations {equation*} \{{array}{ll} -Δu+u= F_u(|x|,u,v), & \hbox{} -Δv+v=- F_v(|x|,u,v), & \hbox{} \,\,\,\,\,u,v\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N). & \hbox{} {array}. {equation*} It is shown that if $F$ is odd in $(u,v)$ and satisfy some growth conditions, then $(\mathcal{S})$ has infinitely many both radial and nonradial solutions. The proof relies on the Principle of Symmetric Criticality and a generalized Fountain Theorem for strongly indefinite functionals.
We prove the existence of a loop type component of non-negative solutions for an indefinite elliptic equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. This result complements our previous results obtained in [12], where the existence of another loop type component was established in a different situation. Our proof combines local and global bifurcation theory, rescaling and regularizing arguments, a priori bounds, and Whyburn's topological method. A further investigation of the loop type component established in [12] is also provided.
In this paper, we consider the elliptic system \begin{equation*} \left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu=g(x,v)\,\, \textnormal{in}Ω, & \hbox{} -Δv=f(x,u)\,\,\textnormal{in}Ω, & \hbox{} u=v=0\textnormal{on}\partialΩ, & \hbox{} \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $Ω$ is a bounded smooth domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$, and $f$ and $g$ satisfy a general superquadratic condition. By using variational methods, we prove the existence of infinitely many solutions. Our argument relies on the application of a generalized variant fountain theorem for strongly indefinite functionals. Previous results in the topic a…
It is established existence of bound and ground state solutions for quasilinear elliptic systems driven by (ϕ1, ϕ2)-Laplacian operator. The main feature here is to consider quasilinear elliptic systems involving both nonsingular nonlinearities combined with indefinite potentials and singular cases perturbed by superlinear and subcritical couple terms. These prevent us to use arguments based on Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition and variational methods for differentiable functionals. By exploring the Nehari method and doing a fine analysis on the fibering map associated, we get estimates that allo…
In this paper we establish existence and multiplicity of solutions for an elliptic system which has strong resonance at first eigenvalue. To describe the resonance, we use an eigenvalue problem with indefinite weight. In all results we use Variational Methods.
We construct multibump nodal solutions of the elliptic equation $$ -Δu=a^+[λu+ f(\, \cdot\,, u)]-μa^- g(\, \cdot\,, u) $$ in $H^1_0(Ω)$, when $μ$ is large, under appropriate assumptions, for $f$ superlinear and subcritical and such that the eigenvalues of the associated linearized operator on $H^1_0(\{x\inΩ:\: a(x)>0\})$ at zero, $u\longmapsto u-λ(-Δ)^{-1}(a^+ u)$, are positive. The solutions are of least energy in some Nehari-type set defined by imposing suitable conditions on orthogonal components of functions in $H^1_0(Ω)$.
It is established the existence and multiplicity of weak solutions for a class of nonlocal equations involving the fractional laplacian, nonlinearities with critical exponential growth and potentials this is which may change sign. The proofs of our existence results rely on minimization methods in combination with the mountain-pass theorem.
We consider a nonlinear Robin problems driven by the $p$-Laplacian plus an indefinite potential. The reaction is resonant with respect to a variational eigenvalue. For the principal eigenvalue we assume strong resonance. Using variational tools and critical groups we prove existence and multiplicity theorems.
Our purpose is to find positive solutions $u \in D^{1,2}(\rz^N)$ of the semilinear elliptic problem $-\laplace u = h(x) u^{p-1}$ for $2<p$. The function $h$ may have an indefinite sign. Key ingredients are a $h$-dependent concentration-compactness Lemma and a characterization of compact embeddings of $D^{1,2}(\rz^N)$ into weighted Lebesgue spaces.
We obtain multiplicity results for a class of first-order superquadratic Hamiltonian systems and a class of indefinite superquadratic elliptic systems which lead to the study of strongly indefinite functionals. There is no assumption to the effect that the nonlinear terms have to satisfy the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz superquadratic condition. To establish the existence of solutions, a new version of the symmetric mountain pass theorem for strongly indefinite functionals is presented in this paper. This theorem is subsequently applied to deal with cases where all the Palais-Smale sequences of the e…
We consider bifurcation of solutions from a given trivial branch for a class of strongly indefinite elliptic systems via the spectral flow. Our main results establish bifurcation invariants that can be obtained from the coefficients of the systems without using explicit solutions of their linearisations at the given branch. Our constructions are based on a comparison principle for the spectral flow and a generalisation of a bifurcation theorem due to Szulkin.
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{N}$ ($N\geq1$) be a smooth bounded domain, $a\in C(\barΩ)$ a sign-changing function, and $0\leq q<1$. We investigate the Robin problem \[ \begin{cases} -Δu=a(x)u^{q} & \mbox{in $Ω$},\\ u\geq0 & \mbox{in $Ω$},\\ \partial_νu=αu & \mbox{on $\partial Ω$}, \end{cases} \] where $α\in\lbrack-\infty,\infty)$ and $ν$ is the unit outward normal to $\partialΩ$. Due to the lack of strong maximum principle structure, this problem may have \textit{dead core} solutions. However, for a large class of weights $a$ we recover a \textit{positivity} property when $q$ is close to $1$, which…
We consider the problem $(P)$, $$ -Δu =c(x)u+μ|\nabla u|^2 +f(x), \quad u \in H^1_0(Ω) \cap L^{\infty}(Ω),$$ where $Ω$ is a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N \geq 3$, $μ>0, \, c \in \mathcal{C}(\overlineΩ),$ and $ f \in L^q(Ω)$ for some $ q>\frac{N}{2}$ with $ f\gneqq 0. $ Here $c$ is allowed to change sign. We show that when $c^+ \not \equiv 0$ and $c^+ +μf$ is suitably small, this problem has at least two positive solutions. This result contrasts with the case $c \leq 0$, where uniqueness holds. To show this multiplicity result we first transform $(P)$ into a semilinear problem having a v…
We consider a parametric semilinear Robin problem driven by the Laplacian plus an indefinite and unbounded potential. In the reaction, we have the competing effects of a concave term appearing with a negative sign and of an asymmetric asymptotically linear term which is resonant in the negative direction. Using variational methods together with truncation and perturbation techniques and Morse theory (critical groups) we prove two multiplicity theorems producing four and five respectively nontrivial smooth solutions when the parameter $λ>0$ is small.
We present a new approach to solve a Schrödinger Equation autonomous at infinity, by identifying the relation between the arrangement of the spectrum of the concerned operator and the behavior of the nonlinearity at zero and at infinity. In order to apply variational methods, we set up a suitable linking structure depending on the growth of the nonlinear term and making use of information about the autonomous problem at infinity. Our method allows us to circumvent the lack of compactness. The main novelty is that none monotonicity assumption is required on the nonlinearity, which may be sign-c…
Our purpose is to find positive solutions $u \in D^{1,2}(\rz^N)$ of the semilinear elliptic problem $-\laplace u - λV(x) u = h(x) u^{p-1}$ for $2<p$. The functions $V$ and $h$ may have an indefinite sign and the linearized operator need not to have a first (principal) eigenvalue, e.g. we allow $V\equiv 1$. We give precise existence and nonexistence criteria, which depend on $λ$ and on the growth of $h^{-}$ and $h^{+}/V^+$. Existence theorems are obtained by constrained minimization. The mountain pass theorem leads to a second solution.
We obtain fundamental imbeddings for the fractional Sobolev space with variable exponent that is a generalization of well-known fractional Sobolev spaces. As an application, we obtain a-priori bounds and multiplicity of solutions to some nonlinear elliptic problems involving the fractional $p(\cdot)$-Laplacian.
It is established existence, uniqueness and multiplicity of solutions for a quasilinear elliptic problem problems driven by $Φ$-Laplacian operator. Here we consider the reflexive and nonreflexive cases using an auxiliary problem. In order to prove our main results we employ variational methods, regularity results and truncation techniques.
We study the elliptic system \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δu_1 - κ_1u_1 = μ_1|u_1|^{p-2}u_1 + λα|u_1|^{α-2}|u_2|^βu_1, \\ -Δu_2 - κ_2u_2 = μ_2|u_2|^{p-2}u_2 + λβ|u_1|^α|u_2|^{β-2}u_2, \\ u_1,u_2\in D^{1,2}_0(Ω), \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 3$, $κ_1,κ_2\in\mathbb{R}$, $μ_1,μ_2,λ>0$, $α,β>1$, and $α+ β= p\le 2^*:=\frac{2N}{N-2}$. For $p\in (2,2^*)$ we establish the existence of a ground state and of a prescribed number of fully nontrivial solutions to this system for $λ$ sufficiently large. If $p=2^*$ and $κ_1,κ_2>0$ we establish the ex…
We consider the existence and multiplicity of solutions for a class of quasi-linear Schrödinger equations which include the modified nonlinear Schrödinger equations. A new perturbation approach is used to treat the sub-cubic nonlinearity.
Spectral asymptotics of linear periodic elliptic operators with indefinite (sign-changing) density function is investigated in perforated domains with the two-scale convergence method. The limiting behavior of positive and negative eigencouples depends crucially on whether the average of the weight over the solid part is positive, negative or equal to zero. We prove concise homogenization results in all three cases.
We study a boundary value elliptic problem having a lower order nonlinear term with subquadratic growth in the gradient of the solution and possibly singular when the solution vanishes. If the singularity is mild enough (and even in the absence of the singularity), we prove an existence and multiplicity result. On the contrary, we prove an existence and uniqueness result for strong singularities.
The present paper studies the fractional $p$-Laplacian boundary value problems with jumping nonlinearities at zero or infinity and obtain the existence of multiple solutions and sign-changing solutions by constructing the suitable pseudo-gradient vector field of the corresponding energy functional.
A minimax variational principle for saddle-point solutions with prescribed energy levels is introduced. The approach is based on the development of the linking theorem to the energy level nonlinear generalized Rayleigh quotients. An application to indefinite elliptic Dirichlet problems is presented. Among the consequences, the existence of solutions with zero-energy levels is obtained.
In this paper we prove the existence of infinitely many nontrivial solutions for the class of $(p,\, q)$ fractional elliptic equations involving concave-critical nonlinearities in bounded domains in $\mathbb{R}^N$. Further, when the nonlinearity is of convex-critical type, we establish the multiplicity of nonnegative solutions using variational methods. In particular, we show the existence of at least $cat_Ω(Ω)$ nonnegative solutions.
We show that the number of low energy solutions of a double singularly perturbed Schroedinger Maxwell system type on a smooth 3 dimensional manifold (M,g) depends on the topological properties of the manifold. The result is obtained via Lusternik Schnirelmann category theory.
In this paper we study multiplicity and qualitative behavior of solutions for semilinear elliptic problems with neumann boundary condition and asymptotically linear smooth nonlinearity. We provide sufficient conditions on the number of eigenvalues the derivative of the nonlinearity crosses to guarantee existence of at least five nontrivial solutions. The techniques we use are a combination of minimization, Leray-Schauder degree, Morse Theory and Reduction method a la Castro-Lazer.
In this paper, we study the existence and multiplicity results of nontrivial positive solutions to the following quasilinear elliptic equation on $\RN$, when $N\geq2$, \begin{equation} \Lp u=λ\hspace{0.2mm}K(x)u^{r-1}-V(x)u^{q-1}.\nonumber \end{equation} Here, $K(x),V(x)>0$ are suitable potentials, $1<p<r<q<\infty$, and $λ>0$ is a parameter. To study this problem, some compact embedding results regarding $\MVR\hookrightarrow\LKR$ are proved that unify and extend some recent results of the author \cite{Ha1,Ha2,Ha3}.
We consider a semilinear elliptic equation with a nonsmooth, locally \hbox{Lipschitz} potential function (hemivariational inequality). Our hypotheses permit double resonance at infinity and at zero (double-double resonance situation). Our approach is based on the nonsmooth critical point theory for locally Lipschitz functionals and uses an abstract multiplicity result under local linking and an extension of the Castro--Lazer--Thews reduction method to a nonsmooth setting, which we develop here using tools from nonsmooth analysis.
In this paper, we establish existence and multiplicity of solutions for the following class of quasilinear field equation $$ -Δu+V(x)u-Δ_{p}u+W'(u)=0, \,\,\, \mbox{in} \,\,\, \mathbb{R}^{N}, \eqno{(P)} $$ where $u=(u_1,u_2,...,u_{N+1})$, $p>N \geq 2$, $W$ is a singular function and $V$ is a positive continuous function.
It is established some existence and multiplicity of solution results for a quasilinear elliptic problem driven by $Φ$-Laplacian operator. One of these solutions is built as a ground state solution. In order to prove our main results we apply the Nehari method combined with the concentration compactness theorem in an Orlicz-Sobolev framework. One of the difficulties in dealing with this kind of operator is the lost of homogeneity properties.
In this paper, we establish the existence and multiplicity of multi-bump nodal solutions for the following class of problems $$ -Δu+(λV(x)+1)u=f(u),~~\mbox{in}~~\mathbb{R}^2, $$ where $λ\in(0,\infty)$, $f$ is a continuous function with exponential critical growth and $V:\mathbb{R}^2\to \mathbb{R}$ is a continuous function verifying some hypotheses.
We show that a class of divergence-form elliptic problems with quadratic growth in the gradient and non-coercive zero order terms are solvable, under essentially optimal hypotheses on the coefficients in the equation. In addition, we prove that the solutions are in general not unique. The case where the zero order term has the opposite sign was already intensively studied and the uniqueness is the rule.
In this paper, a new iterative two-level algorithm is presented for solving the finite element discretization for nonsymmetric or indefinite elliptic problems. The iterative two-level algorithm uses the same coarse space as the traditional two-grid algorithm, but its ``fine space'' uses the higher oder finite element space under the coarse grid. Therefore, the iterative two-level algorithm only needs one grid, and the computational cost is much lower than the traditional iterative two-grid algorithm. Finally, compared with the traditional two-grid algorithm, numerical experiments show that the…
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{N}$ ($N\geq1$) be a bounded and smooth domain and $a:Ω\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ be a sign-changing weight satisfying $\int_Ωa<0$. We prove the existence of a positive solution $u_{q}$ for the problem $(P_{a,q})$: $-Δu=a(x)u^{q}$ in $Ω$, $\frac{\partial u}{\partialν}=0$ on $\partialΩ$, if $q_{0}<q<1$, for some $q_{0}=q_{0}(a)>0$. In doing so, we improve the existence result previously established in [16]. In addition, we provide the asymptotic behavior of $u_{q}$ as $q\rightarrow1^{-}$. When $Ω$ is a ball and $a$ is radial, we give some explicit conditions on $q$ and $a$ e…
The purpose of this paper is to study the indefinite Kirchhoff type problem: \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} M\left( \int_{\mathbb{R}^{N}}(|\nabla u|^{2}+u^{2})dx\right) \left[ -Δu+u\right] =f(x,u) & \text{in }\mathbb{R}^{N}, \\ 0\leq u\in H^{1}\left( \mathbb{R}^{N}\right), & \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $N\geq 1$, $M(t)=am\left( t\right) +b$, $m\in C(\mathbb{R}^{+})$ and $ f(x,u)=g(x,u)+h(x)u^{q-1}$. We require that $f$ is \textquotedblleft local\textquotedblright\ sublinear at the origin and \textquotedblleft local\textquotedblright\ linear at infinite. Using the mou…
Results about existence of a signed ground state solution and multiple solutions (if $f$ is odd with respect to the second variable) are proven for a class of asymptotically linear elliptic problems involving a Carathéodory type nonlinearity satisfying assumptions weaker than (fF) in \cite{GLZ} or $(F_{2})_{+}$ in \cite{CM}. A close relation between the behaviour of $\lim_{|t|\to \infty}f(x, t)/|t|$ and the number of solutions is stablished.
We prove the existence of infinitely many classical periodic solutions for a class of degenerate semilinear wave equations: \[ u_{tt}-u_{xx}+|u|^{s-1}u=f(x,t), \] for all $s>1$. In particular we prove the existence of infinitely many classical solutions for the case $s=3$ posed by Brézis in \cite{BrezisBAMS}. The proof relies on a new upper a priori estimates for minimax values of, a pertubed from symmetry, strongly indefinite functional, depending on a small parameter.
We generalise the semi-Riemannian Morse index theorem to elliptic systems of partial differential equations on star-shaped domains. Moreover, we apply our theorem to bifurcation from a branch of trivial solutions of semilinear systems, where the bifurcation parameter is introduced by shrinking the domain to a point. This extends recent results of the authors for scalar equations.
We consider the following boundary value problem -Δu= g(x,u) + f(x,u) x\in Ω u=0 x\in \partial Ω where $g(x,-ξ)=-g(x,ξ)$ and $g$ has subcritical exponential growth in $\mathbb{R} ^2$. Using the method developed by Bolle, we prove that this problem has infinitely many solutions under suitable conditions on the growth of $g(u)$ and $f(u)$.
In this article we study the symmetry breaking phenomenon of solutions of noncooperative elliptic systems. We apply the degree for G-invariant strongly indefinite functionals to obtain simultaneously a symmetry breaking and a global bifurcation phenomenon.
