We extend in two directions the notion of perturbations of Carleson type for the Dirichlet problem associated to an elliptic real second-order divergence-form (possibly degenerate, not necessarily symmetric) elliptic operator. First, in addition to the classical perturbations of Carleson type, that we call additive Carleson perturbations, we introduce scalar-multiplicative and antisymmetric Carleson perturbations, which both allow non-trivial differences at the boundary. Second, we consider domains which admit an elliptic PDE in a broad sense: we count as examples the 1-sided NTA (a.k.a. uniform) domains satisfying the capacity density condition, the 1-sided chord-arc domains, the domains with low-dimensional Ahlfors-David regular boundaries, and certain domains with mixed-dimensional boundaries; thus our methods provide a unified perspective on the Carleson perturbation theory of elliptic operators.
Our proofs do not introduce sawtooth domains or the extrapolation method. We also present several applications to some Dahlberg-Kenig-Pipher operators, free-boundary problems, and we provide a new characterization of $A_{\infty}$ among elliptic measures.
In this paper we present in concise form recent results, with illustrative proofs, on solvability of the $L^p$ Dirichlet, Regularity and Neumann problems for scalar elliptic equations on Lipschitz domains with coefficients satisfying a variety of Carleson conditions. More precisely, with $L=\mbox{div}(A\nabla)$, we assume the matrix $A$ is elliptic and satisfies a natural Carleson condition either in the form that ($|\nabla A(X)|\lesssim \mbox{dist}(X,\partialΩ)^{-1}$ and $|\nabla A|(X)^2\mbox{dist}(X,\partialΩ)\,dX$) or $\mbox{dist}(X,\partialΩ)^{-1}\left(\mbox{osc}_{B(X,δ(X)/2)}A\right)^2\,d…
Let $Ω$ be an open set with Ahlfors-David regular boundary satisfying the corkscrew condition. When $Ω$ is connected in some quantitative form one can establish that for any real elliptic operator with bounded coefficients, the quantitative absolute continuity of elliptic measures is equivalent to the fact that all bounded null solutions satisfy Carleson measure estimates. In turn, in the same setting these equivalent properties are stable under Fefferman-Kenig-Pipher perturbations. However, without connectivity, there is no Fefferman-Kenig-Pipher perturbation result available. In this paper, …
The present paper establishes the correspondence between the properties of the solutions of a class of PDEs and the geometry of sets in Euclidean space. We settle the question of whether (quantitative) absolute continuity of the elliptic measure with respect to the surface measure and uniform rectifiability of the boundary are equivalent, in an optimal class of divergence form elliptic operators satisfying a suitable Carleson measure condition. The result can be viewed as a quantitative analogue of the Wiener criterion adapted to the singular $L^p$ data case. We split our proof on two main ste…
We generalize to the setting of 1-sided chord-arc domains, that is, to domains satisfying the interior Corkscrew and Harnack Chain conditions (these are respectively scale-invariant/quantitative versions of the openness and path-connectedness) and which have an Ahlfors regular boundary, a result of Kenig-Kirchheim-Pipher-Toro, in which Carleson measure estimates for bounded solutions of the equation $Lu=-{\rm div}(A\nabla u) = 0$ with $A$ being a real (not necessarily symmetric) uniformly elliptic matrix, imply that the corresponding elliptic measure belongs to the Muckenhoupt $A_\infty$ class…
The present paper, along with its sequel, establishes the correspondence between the properties of the solutions of a class of PDEs and the geometry of sets in Euclidean space. This paper…
We consider divergence form elliptic equations $Lu:=\nabla\cdot(A\nabla u)=0$ in the half space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}_+ :=\{(x,t)\in \mathbb{R}^n\times(0,\infty)\}$, whose coefficient matrix $A$ is complex elliptic, bounded and measurable. In addition, we suppose that $A$ satisfies some additional regularity in the direction transverse to the boundary, namely that the discrepancy $A(x,t) -A(x,0)$ satisfies a Carleson measure condition of Fefferman-Kenig-Pipher type, with small Carleson norm. Under these conditions, we establish a full range of boundedness results for double and single layer potent…
The present paper, along with its companion [Hofmann, Martell, Mayboroda, Toro, Zhao, arXiv:1710.06157], establishes the correspondence between the properties of the solutions of a class of PDEs and the geometry of sets in Euclidean space. We settle the question of whether (quantitative) absolute continuity of the elliptic measure with respect to the surface measure and uniform rectifiability of the boundary are equivalent, in an optimal class of divergence form elliptic operators satisfying a suitable Carleson measure condition. This paper concerns the boundary behavior of solutions of certain fully nonlinear equations with a general drift term. We elaborate on the non-homogeneous generalized Harnack inequality proved by the second author in (Julin, ARMA -15), to prove a generalized Carleson estimate. We also prove boundary Hölder continuity and a boundary Harnack type inequality.
We prove that the Dirichlet problem for degenerate elliptic equations $\mathrm{div}(A \nabla u) = 0$ in the upper half-space $(x,t)\in \mathbb{R}^{n+1}_+$ is solvable when $n\geq2$ and the boundary data is in $L^p_μ(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for some $p<\infty$. The coefficient matrix $A$ is only assumed to be measurable, real-valued and $t$-independent with a degenerate bound and ellipticity controlled by an $A_2$-weight $μ$. It is not required to be symmetric. The result is achieved by proving a Carleson measure estimate for all bounded solutions in order to deduce that the degenerate elliptic measure …
Let $Ω$ be a Lipschitz domain in $\mathbb R^n$ $n\geq 2,$ and $L=\mbox{div} (A\nabla\cdot)$ be a second order elliptic operator in divergence form. We establish solvability of the Dirichlet regularity problem with boundary data in $H^{1,p}(\partialΩ)$ and of the Neumann problem with $L^p(\partialΩ)$ data for the operator $L$ on Lipschitz domains with small Lipschitz constant. We allow the coefficients of the operator $L$ to be rough obeying a certain Carleson condition with small norm. These results complete the results of [5] where $L^p(\partialΩ)$ Dirichlet problem was considered under the s…
We prove an analogue of a perturbation result for the Dirichlet problem of divergence form elliptic operators by Fefferman, Kenig and Pipher, for the degenerate elliptic operators of David, Feneuil and Mayboroda, which were developed to study geometric and analytic properties of sets with boundaries whose co-dimension is higher than $1$. These operators are of the form $-\text{div} A\nabla$, where $A$ is a weighted elliptic matrix crafted to weigh the distance to the high co-dimension boundary in a way that allows for the nourishment of an elliptic theory. When this boundary is a $d-$Alhfors-D…
We prove that the solvability of the regularity problem in $L^q(\partial Ω)$ is stable under Carleson perturbations. If the perturbation is small, then the solvability is preserved in the same $L^q$, and if the perturbation is large, the regularity problem is solvable in $L^{r}$ for some other $r\in (1,\infty)$. We extend an earlier result from Kenig and Pipher to very general unbounded domains, possibly with lower dimensional boundaries as in the theory developed by Guy David and the last two authors. To be precise, we only need the domain to have non-tangential access to its Ahlfors regular …
We prove that for any homogeneous, second order, constant complex coefficient elliptic system $L$, the Dirichlet problem in $\mathbb{R}^{n}_{+}$ with boundary data in BMO is well-posed in the class of functions $u$ with $dμ_u(x',t):=|\nabla u(x',t)|^2\,t\,dx'dt$ being a Carleson measure. We establish a Fatou type theorem guaranteeing the existence of the pointwise nontangential boundary trace for smooth null-solutions $u$ of such systems satisfying the said Carleson measure condition. These imply that BMO can be characterized as the collection of nontangential pointwise traces of smooth null-s…
We establish $L^p$, $2\le p\le\infty$ solvability of the Dirichlet boundary value problem for a parabolic equation $u_t-\mbox{div}(A\nabla u)=0$ on time-varying domains with coefficient matrix $A=(a_{ij})$ that satisfy a small Carleson condition. The result is motivated by similar results for the elliptic equation $\mbox{div}(A\nabla u)=0$ that were established previously.
In the present paper, we consider an elliptic divergence form operator in $\mathbb{R}^n\setminus\mathbb{R}^d$ with $d<n-1$ and prove that its Green function is almost affine, in the sense that the normalized difference between the Green function with a sufficiently far away pole and a suitable affine function at every scale satisfies a Carleson measure estimate. The coefficients of the operator can be very oscillatory, and only need to satisfy some condition similar to the traditional quadratic Carleson condition.
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, be a 1-sided non-tangentially accessible domain (aka uniform domain), i.e., a set which satisfies the interior Corkscrew and Harnack chain conditions, respectively scale-invariant/quantitative versions of openness and path-connectedness. Assume that $Ω$ satisfies the so-called capacity density condition. Let $L_0u=-\mathrm{div}(A_0\nabla u)$, $Lu=-\mathrm{div}(A\nabla u)$ be two real (non-necessarily symmetric) uniformly elliptic operators, and write $ω_{L_0}$, $ω_L$ for the associated elliptic measures. The goal of this program is to find sufficient c…
We establish a Dahlberg-type perturbation theorem for second order divergence form elliptic operators with complex coefficients. In our previous paper, we showed the following result: If ${\mathcal L}_0=\mbox{div} A^0(x)\nabla+B^0(x)\cdot\nabla$ is a $p$-elliptic operator satisfying certain Carleson condition on $\nabla A$ and $B$ then the $L^p$ Dirichlet problem for the operator ${\mathcal L}_0$ is solvable in the upper half-space ${\mathbb R}^n_+$. In this paper we prove that the $L^p$ solvability is stable under small perturbations of ${\mathcal L}_0$. That is if ${\mathcal L}_1$ is another…
In the present paper, we consider an elliptic divergence form operator in the half-space and prove that its Green function is almost affine, or more precisely, that the normalized difference between the Green function and a suitable affine function at every scale satisfies a Carleson measure estimate, provided that the oscillations of the coefficients satisfy the traditional quadratic Carleson condition. The results are sharp, and in particular, it is demonstrated that the class of the operators considered in the paper cannot be improved.
We prove continuity and surjectivity of the trace map onto $L_p$, from a space of functions of locally bounded variation, defined by the Carleson functional. The extension map is constructed through a stopping time argument. This extends earlier work by Varopoulos in the BMO case, related to the Corona theorem. We also prove $L_p$ Carleson approximability results for solutions to elliptic non-smooth divergence form equations, which generalize results in the case $p=\infty$ by Hofmann, Kenig, Mayboroda and Pipher.
In this paper, we continue the study of a class of second order elliptic operators of the form $\mathcal L=\mbox{div}(A\nabla\cdot)$ in a domain above a Lipschitz graph in $\mathbb R^n,$ where the coefficients of the matrix $A$ satisfy a Carleson measure condition, expressed as a condition on the oscillation on Whitney balls. For this class of operators, it is known (since 2001) that the $L^q$ Dirichlet problem is solvable for some $1 < q < \infty$. Moreover, further studies completely resolved the range of $L^q$ solvability of the Dirichlet, Regularity, Neumann problems in Lipschitz domains, …
In this paper, we provide a new means of establishing solvability of the Dirichlet problem on Lipschitz domains, with measurable data, for second order elliptic, non-symmetric divergence form operators. We show that a certain optimal Carleson measure estimate for bounded solutions of such operators implies a regularity result for the associated elliptic measure.
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, be a 1-sided chord-arc domain, that is, a domain which satisfies interior Corkscrew and Harnack Chain conditions (these are respectively scale-invariant/quantitative versions of the openness and path-connectedness), and whose boundary $\partialΩ$ is $n$-dimensional Ahlfors regular. Consider $L_0$ and $L$ two real symmetric divergence form elliptic operators and let $ω_{L_0}$, $ω_L$ be the associated elliptic measures. We show that if $ω_{L_0}\in A_\infty(σ)$, where $σ=H^n|_{\partialΩ}$, and $L$ is a perturbation of $L_0$ (in the sense that the discrepa…
Suppose that $Ω\subset\mathbb R^{n+1}$, $n\geq1$, is a uniform domain with $n$-Ahlfors regular boundary and $L$ is a (not necessarily symmetric) divergence form elliptic, real, bounded operator in $Ω$. We show that the corresponding elliptic measure $ω_L$ is quantitatively absolutely continuous with respect to surface measure of $\partialΩ$ in the sense that $ω_L \in A_\infty(σ)$ if and only if any bounded solution $u$ to $Lu = 0$ in $Ω$ is $\varepsilon$-approximable for any $\varepsilon \in (0,1)$. By $\varepsilon$-approximability of $u$ we mean that there exists a function $Φ= Φ^\varepsilon$…
Questions concerning quantitative and asymptotic properties of the elliptic measure corresponding to a uniformly elliptic divergence form operator have been the focus of recent studies. In this setting we show that the elliptic measure of an operator with coefficients satisfying a vanishing Carleson condition in the upper half space is an asymptotically optimal $A_\infty$ weight. In particular, for such operators the logarithm of the elliptic kernel is in the space of (locally) vanishing mean oscillation. To achieve this, we prove local, quantitative estimates on a quantity (introduced by Feff…
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\geq2$, be an open set with Ahlfors-David regular boundary that satisfies the corkscrew condition. We consider a uniformly elliptic operator $L$ in divergence form associated with a matrix $A$ with real, merely bounded and possibly non-symmetric coefficients, which are also locally Lipschitz and satisfy suitable Carleson type estimates. In this paper we show that if $L^*$ is the operator in divergence form associated with the transpose matrix of $A$, then $\partialΩ$ is uniformly $n$-rectifiable if and only if every bounded solution of $Lu=0$ and every bounded…
We prove boundedness of Calderón-Zygmund operators acting in Banach functions spaces on domains, defined by the $L_1$ Carleson functional and $L_q$ ($1<q<\infty$) Whitney averages. For such bounds to hold, we assume that the operator maps towards the boundary of the domain. We obtain the Carleson estimates by proving a pointwise domination of the operator, by sparse operators with a causal structure. The work is motivated by maximal regularity estimates for elliptic PDEs and is related to one-sided weighted estimates for singular integrals.
In the paper arXiv:1708.02289 we have introduced new solvability methods for strongly elliptic second order systems in divergence form on a domains above a Lipschitz graph, satisfying $L^p$-boundary data for $p$ near $2$. The main novel aspect of our result is that it applies to operators with coefficients of limited regularity and applies to operators satisfying a natural Carleson condition that has been first considered in the scalar case. In this paper we extend this result in several directions. We improve the range of solvability of the $L^p$ Dirichlet problem to the interval $2-\varepsil…
This is the first part of a series of three articles. In this paper, we obtain weighted norm inequalities for different conical square functions associated with the Heat and the Poisson semigroups generated by a second order divergence form elliptic operator with bounded complex coefficients. We find classes of Muckenhoupt weights where the square functions are comparable and/or bounded. These classes are natural from the point of view of the ranges where the unweighted estimates hold. In doing that, we obtain sharp weighted change of angle formulas which allow us to compare conical square fun…
We prove that the $L^{p'}$-solvability of the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for an elliptic operator $L=-\operatorname{div}A\nabla$ with real and merely bounded coefficients is equivalent to the $L^{p'}$-solvability of the Poisson Dirichlet problem $Lw=H-\operatorname{div} F$, which is defined in terms of an $L^{p'}$ estimate on the non-tangential maximal function, assuming that $\operatorname{dist}(\cdot, \partial Ω) H$ and $F$ lie in certain $L^{p'}$-Carleson-type spaces, and that the domain $Ω\subset\mathbb R^{n+1}$, $n\geq2$, satisfies the corkscrew condition and has $n$-Ahlfors regular bo…
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\geq 2$, be 1-sided NTA domain (aka uniform domain), i.e. a domain which satisfies interior Corkscrew and Harnack Chain conditions, and assume that $\partialΩ$ is $n$-dimensional Ahlfors-David regular. We characterize the rectifiability of $\partialΩ$ in terms of the absolute continuity of surface measure with respect to harmonic measure. We also show that these are equivalent to the fact that $\partialΩ$ can be covered $\mathcal{H}^n$-a.e. by a countable union of portions of boundaries of bounded chord-arc subdomains of $Ω$ and to the fact that $\partialΩ$ p…
We give a simplified and direct proof of the Kato square root estimate for parabolic operators with elliptic part in divergence form and coefficients possibly depending on space and time in a merely measurable way. The argument relies on the nowadays classical reduction to a quadratic estimate and a Carleson-type inequality. The precise organization of the estimates is different from earlier works. In particular, we succeed in separating space and time variables almost completely despite the non-autonomous character of the operator. Hence, we can allow for degenerate ellipticity dictated by a …
Given two elliptic operators L and M in nondivergence form, with coefficients A_L(x), A_M(x) and drift terms b_L(x), b_M(x), respectively, satisfying a Carleson measure disagreement condition in a Lipschitz domain Omega in R^{n+1}, then their harmonic measures are mutually absolutely continuous. As an application of this, a new approximation argument and known results we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a single operator L (in divergence or nondivergence form) to have regular harmonic measure with respect to Lebesgue measure. The results are sharp in all cases.
We study the boundary regularity of solutions to divergence form operators which are small perturbations of operators for which the boundary regularity of solutions is known. An operator is a small perturbation of another operator if the deviation function of the coefficients satisfies a Carleson measure condition with small norm. We extend Escauriaza's result on Lipschitz domains to chord arc domains with small constant. In particular we prove that if $L_1$ is a small perturbation of $L_0$ and $\log k_0$ has small BMO norm so does $\log k_1$. Here $k_i$ denotes the density of the elliptic mea…
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, be a 1-sided non-tangentially accessible domain (aka uniform domain), that is, $Ω$ satisfies the interior Corkscrew and Harnack chain conditions, which are respectively scale-invariant/quantitative versions of openness and path-connectedness. Let us assume also that $Ω$ satisfies the so-called capacity density condition, a quantitative version of the fact that all boundary points are Wiener regular. Consider $L_0 u=-\mathrm{div}(A_0\nabla u)$, $Lu=-\mathrm{div}(A\nabla u)$, two real (non-necessarily symmetric) uniformly elliptic operators in $Ω$, and w…
We continue the development, by reduction to a first order system for the conormal gradient, of $L^2$ \textit{a priori} estimates and solvability for boundary value problems of Dirichlet, regularity, Neumann type for divergence form second order, complex, elliptic systems. We work here on the unit ball and more generally its bi-Lipschitz images, assuming a Carleson condition as introduced by Dahlberg which measures the discrepancy of the coefficients to their boundary trace near the boundary. We sharpen our estimates by proving a general result concerning \textit{a priori} almost everywhere no…
In the present paper, we consider elliptic operators $L=-\textrm{div}(A\nabla)$ in a domain bounded by a chord-arc surface $Γ$ with small enough constant, and whose coefficients $A$ satisfy a weak form of the Dahlberg-Kenig-Pipher condition of approximation by constant coefficient matrices, with a small enough Carleson norm, and show that the elliptic measure with pole at infinity associated to $L$ is $A_\infty$-absolutely continuous with respect to the surface measure on $Γ$, with a small $A_\infty$ constant. In other words, we show that for relatively flat uniformly rectifiable sets and for …
We prove the solvability of the parabolic $L^p$ Dirichlet boundary value problem for $1 < p \leq \infty$ for a PDE of the form $u_t = \mbox{div} (A \nabla u) + B \cdot \nabla u$ on time-varying domains where the coefficients $A= [a_{ij}(X, t)]$ and $B=[b_i]$ satisfy a certain natural small Carleson condition. This result brings the state of affairs in the parabolic setting up to the elliptic standard. Furthermore, we establish that if the coefficients of the operator $A,\,B$ satisfy a vanishing Carleson condition and the time-varying domain is of VMO type then the parabolic $L^p$ Dirichlet bou…
Varopoulos extensions in domains with Ahlfors-regular boundaries and applications to Boundary Value Problems for elliptic systems with $L^\infty$ coefficients
We establish a new theory of regularity for elliptic complex valued second order equations of the form $\mathcal L=$div$A(\nabla\cdot)$, when the coefficients of the matrix $A$ satisfy a natural algebraic condition, a strengthened version of a condition known in the literature as $L^p$-dissipativity. Precisely, the regularity result is a reverse Hölder condition for $L^p$ averages of solutions on interior balls, and serves as a replacement for the De Giorgi - Nash - Moser regularity of solutions to real-valued divergence form elliptic operators. In a series of papers, Cialdea and Maz'ya studie…
The theory of second order complex coefficient operators of the form $\mathcal{L}=\mbox{div} A(x)\nabla$ has recently been developed under the assumption of $p$-ellipticity. In particular, if the matrix $A$ is $p$-elliptic, the solutions $u$ to $\mathcal{L}u = 0$ will satisfy a higher integrability, even though they may not be continuous in the interior. Moreover, these solutions have the property that $|u|^{p/2-1}u \in W^{1,2}_{loc}$. These properties of solutions were used by Dindoš-Pipher to solve the $L^p$ Dirichlet problem for $p$-elliptic operators whose coefficients satisfy a further re…
In this paper we approach the problem of perturbation from symmetry of strongly indefinite elliptic systems in dimension N>=3. We prove the existence of infinitely many solutions under suitable growth coinditions on the nonlinear terms.
In this paper, we deal with anisotropic singular perturbations of some class of elliptic problem. We study the asymptotic behavior of the solution in certain second order pseudo Sobolev space.
We present some new results concerning perturbation theory for positive solutions of second-order linear elliptic operators, including further study of the equivalence of positive minimal Green functions and the validity of a Liouville comparison principle for nonsymmetric operators.
