This chapter describes techniques for the numerical resolution of optimal transport problems. We will consider several discretizations of these problems, and we will put a strong focus on the mathematical analysis of the algorithms to solve the discretized problems. We will describe in detail the following discretizations and corresponding algorithms: the assignment problem and Bertsekas auction's algorithm; the entropic regularization and Sinkhorn-Knopp's algorithm; semi-discrete optimal transport and Oliker-Prussner or damped Newton's algorithm, and finally semi-discrete entropic regularization. Our presentation highlights the similarity between these algorithms and their connection with the theory of Kantorovich duality.
In this paper we introduce a new class of finite element discretizations of the quadratic optimal transport problem based on its dynamical formulation. These generalize to the finite element setting the finite difference scheme proposed by Papadakis et al. [SIAM J Imaging Sci, 7(1):212--238,2014]. We solve the discrete problem using a proximal splitting approach and we show how to modify this in the presence of regularization terms which are relevant for physical data interpolation.
A discretization of an optimal control problem of a stochastic parabolic equation driven by multiplicative noise is analyzed. The state equation is discretized by the continuous piecewise linear element method in space and by the backward Euler scheme in time. The convergence rate $ O(τ^{1/2} + h^2) $ is rigorously derived.
In this work, a flexible higher-order space-time adaptive finite element approximation of convection-dominated transport with coupled fluid flow is developed and studied. Convection-dominated transport is a challenging subproblem in poromechanics in which coupled transport with flow, chemical reaction and mechanical response in porous media is considered. Key ingredients are the arbitrary degree discontinuous Galerkin time discretization of the primal and dual problems for the Dual Weighted Residual (DWR) approach, an a posteriori error estimation for the transport problem coupled with flow an…
In this paper we investigate a priori error estimates for the space-time Galerkin finite element discretization of an optimal control problem governed by a simplified linear gradient enhanced damage model. The model equations are of a special structure as the state equation consists of an elliptic PDE which has to be fulfilled at almost all times coupled with an ODE that has to hold true in almost all points in space. The state equation is discretized by a piecewise constant discontinuous Galerkin method in time and usual conforming linear finite elements in space. For the discretization of th…
The purpose of this work is the development of space-time discretization schemes for phase-field optimal control problems. First, a time discretization of the forward problem is derived using a discontinuous Galerkin formulation. Here, a challenge is to include regularization termsand the crack irreversibility constraint. The optimal control setting is formulated by means of the Lagrangian approach from which the primal part, adjoint, tangent and adjoint Hessian are derived. Herein the overall Newton algorithm is based on a reduced approach by eliminating the state constraint. From the low-ord…
The purpose of this work is the development of space-time discretization schemes for phase-field optimal control problems. Specifically in the optimal control minimization problem, a tracking-type cost functional is minimized to steer the crack via the phase-field variable into a desired pattern. To achieve such optimal solutions, Neumann type boundary conditions need to be determined. First, a time discretization of the forward problem is derived using a discontinuous Galerkin formulation. Here, a challenge is to include regularization terms and the crack irreversibility constraint. The optim…
We consider standard tracking-type, distributed elliptic optimal control problems with $L^2$ regularization, and their finite element discretization. We are investigating the $L^2$ error between the finite element approximation $u_{\varrho h}$ of the state $u_\varrho$ and the desired state (target) $\bar{u}$ in terms of the regularization parameter $\varrho$ and the mesh size $h$ that leads to the optimal choice $\varrho = h^4$. It turns out that, for this choice of the regularization parameter, we can devise simple Jacobi-like preconditioned MINRES or Bramble-Pasciak CG methods that allow us …
The dynamical formulation of optimal transport, also known as Benamou-Brenier formulation or Computational Fluid Dynamics formulation, amounts to write the optimal transport problem as the optimization of a convex functional under a PDE constraint, and can handle \emph{a priori} a vast class of cost functions and geometries. Several discretizations of this problem have been proposed, leading to computations on flat spaces as well as Riemannian manifolds, with extensions to mean field games and gradient flows in the Wasserstein space. In this article, we provide a framework which guarantees con…
We analyze space-time finite element methods for the numerical solution of distributed parabolic optimal control problems with energy regularization in the Bochner space $L^2(0,T;H^{-1}(Ω))$. By duality, the related norm can be evaluated by means of the solution of an elliptic quasi-stationary boundary value problem. When eliminating the control, we end up with the reduced optimality system that is nothing but the variational formulation of the coupled forward-backward primal and adjoint equations. Using Babuška's theorem, we prove unique solvability in the continuous case. Furthermore, we est…
We approximate the solution of the Stokes equations by a new quasi-optimal and pressure robust discontinuous Galerkin discretization of arbitrary order. This means quasi-optimality of the velocity error independent of the pressure. Moreover, the discretization is well-defined for any load which is admissible for the continuous problem and it also provides classical quasi-optimal estimates for the sum of velocity and pressure errors. The key design principle is a careful discretization of the load involving a linear operator, which maps discontinuous Galerkin test functions onto conforming ones…
We consider the finite element discretization and the iterative solution of singularly perturbed elliptic reaction-diffusion equations in three-dimensional computational domains. These equations arise from the optimality conditions for elliptic distributed optimal control problems with energy regularization that were recently studied by M.~Neumüller and O.~Steinbach (2020). We provide quasi-optimal a priori finite element error estimates which depend both on the mesh size $h$ and on the regularization parameter $\varrho$. The choice $\varrho = h^2$ ensures optimal convergence which only depend…
We propose a time-implicit, finite-element based space-time discretization of the necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for the stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problem with the stochastic heat equation driven by linear noise of type $[X(t)+σ(t)]dW(t)$, and prove optimal convergence w.r.t. both, space and time discretization parameters. In particular, we employ the stochastic Riccati equation as a proper analytical tool to handle the linear noise, and thus extend the applicability of the earlier work [16], where the error analysis was restricted to additive noise.
A posteriori error estimates for mixed finite element discretization of the multigroup Neutron Simplified Transport equations with Robin boundary condition
The aim of this paper is to formulate and analyze numerical discretizations of charged-particle dynamics (CPD) in a strong nonuniform magnetic field. A strategy is firstly performed for the two dimensional CPD to construct the semi-discretization and full-discretization which have optimal accuracy. This accuracy is improved in the position and in the velocity when the strength of the magnetic field becomes stronger. This is a better feature than the usual so called "uniformly accurate methods". To obtain this refined accuracy, some reformulations of the problem and two-scale exponential integr…
We propose a hybrid spatial discretization for the radiative transport equation that combines a second-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method and a second-order finite volume (FV) method. The strategy relies on a simple operator splitting that has been used previously to combine different angular discretizations. Unlike standard FV methods with upwind fluxes, the hybrid approach is able to accurately simulate problems in scattering dominated regimes. However, it requires less memory and yields a faster computational time than a uniform DG discretization. In addition, the underlying splitting…
This paper derives and analyzes new diffusion synthetic acceleration (DSA) preconditioners for the SN transport equation when discretized with a high-order (HO) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization. DSA preconditioners address the need to accelerate solving SN transport when the mean free path $\varepsilon$ of particles is small and the condition number of the SN transport equation scales like $O(\varepsilon^{-2})$. By expanding the SN transport operator in $\varepsilon$ and employing a singular matrix perturbation analysis, we derive a DSA matrix that reduces to the symmetric interior p…
We consider the system of partial differential equations stemming from the time discretization of the two-field formulation of the Biot's model with the backward Euler scheme. A typical difficulty encountered in the space discretization of this problem is the robustness with respect to various material parameters. We deal with this issue by observing that the problem is uniformly stable, irrespective of all parameters, in a suitable nonsymmetric variational setting. Guided by this result, we design a novel nonconforming discretization, which employs Crouzeix-Raviart and discontinuous elements.…
We consider the simulation of barotropic flow of gas in long pipes and pipe networks. Based on a Hamiltonian reformulation of the governing system, a fully discrete approximation scheme is proposed using mixed finite elements in space and an implicit Euler method in time. Assuming the existence of a smooth subsonic solution bounded away from vacuum, a full convergence analysis is presented based on relative energy estimates. Particular attention is paid to establishing error bounds that are uniform in the friction parameter. As a consequence, the method and results also cover the parabolic pro…
We consider a pointwise tracking optimal control problem for a semilinear elliptic partial differential equation. We derive the existence of optimal solutions and analyze first and, necessary and sufficient, second order optimality conditions. We devise two strategies of discretization to approximate a solution of the optimal control problem: a semidiscrete scheme where the control variable is not discretized -- the so-called variational discretization approach -- and a fully discrete scheme where the control variable is discretized with piecewise constant functions. For both solution techniqu…
Li, Chen, Tai & E. (J. Machine Learning Research, 2018) have proposed a regularization of the forward-backward sweep iteration for solving the Pontryagin maximum principle in optimal control problems. The authors prove the global convergence of the iteration in the continuous time case. In this article we show that their proof can be extended to the case of numerical discretization by symplectic Runge-Kutta pairs. We demonstrate the convergence with a simple numerical experiment.
In this article, we derive a new, fast, and robust preconditioned iterative solution strategy for the all-at-once solution of optimal control problems with time-dependent PDEs as constraints, including the heat equation and the non-steady convection--diffusion equation. After applying an optimize-then-discretize approach, one is faced with continuous first-order optimality conditions consisting of a coupled system of PDEs. As opposed to most work in preconditioning the resulting discretized systems, where a (first-order accurate) backward Euler method is used for the discretization of the time…
In this work, we propose a new quasi-optimal test norm for a discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin (DPG) discretization of the ultra-weak formulation of the convection-diffusion equation. We prove theoretically that the proposed test norm leads to bounds between the target norm and the energy norm induced by the test norm which are robust with respect to the diffusion parameter in the solution and gradient components and have favorable scalings in the trace components. We conclude with numerical experiments to confirm our theoretical results.
In this paper we prove optimal error estimates for {solutions with natural regularity} of the equations describing the unsteady motion of incompressible shear-thinning fluids. We consider a full space-time semi-implicit scheme for the discretization. The main novelty, with respect to previous results, is that we obtain the estimates directly without introducing intermediate semi-discrete problems, which enables the treatment of homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions.
This paper analyzes a discretization of a stochastic parabolic optimal control problem, where the diffusion term contains the control variable. With rough data, the convergence of the discretization is derived. In addition, a Monte-Carlo method is presented.
Retractions maps are used to define a discretization of the tangent bundle of the configuration manifold as two copies of the configuration manifold where the dynamics take place. Such discretization maps can be conveniently lifted to the cotangent bundle so that symplectic integrators are constructed for Hamilton's equations. Optimal control problems are provided with a Hamiltonian framework by Pontryagin's Maximum Principle. That is why we use discretization maps and the integrability algorithm to obtain presymplectic integrators for optimal control problems.
A balancing domain decomposition by constraints preconditioner for a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin discretization of an elliptic optimal control problem
We propose and analyze a finite-difference discretization of the Ambrosio-Tortorelli functional. It is known that if the discretization is made with respect to an underlying periodic lattice of spacing $δ$, the discretized functionals $Γ$-converge to the Mumford-Shah functional only if $δ\ll\varepsilon$, $\varepsilon$ being the elliptic approximation parameter of the Ambrosio-Tortorelli functional. Discretizing with respect to stationary, ergodic and isotropic random lattices we prove this $Γ$-convergence result also for $δ\sim\varepsilon$, a regime at which the discretization with respect to …
We discuss the mathematical modeling and numerical discretization of transport problems on one-dimensional networks. Suitable coupling conditions are derived that guarantee conservation of mass across network junctions and dissipation of a mathematical energy which allows to prove existence of unique solutions. We then consider the space discretization by a hybrid discontinuous Galerkin method which provides a suitable upwind mechanism to handle the transport problem and allows to incorporate the coupling conditions in a natural manner. In addition, the method inherits mass conservation and st…
This paper proposes a parallel numerical algorithm to simulate the flow and the transport in a discrete fracture network taking into account the mass exchanges with the surrounding matrix. The discretization of the Darcy fluxes is based on the Vertex Approximate Gradient finite volume scheme adapted to polyhedral meshes and to heterogeneous anisotropic media, and the transport equation is discretized by a first order upwind scheme combined with an Euler explicit integration in time. The parallelization is based on the SPMD (Single Program, Multiple Data) paradigm and relies on a distribution o…
