In this paper we investigate a priori error estimates for the space-time Galerkin finite element discretization of an optimal control problem governed by a simplified linear gradient enhanced damage model. The model equations are of a special structure as the state equation consists of an elliptic PDE which has to be fulfilled at almost all times coupled with an ODE that has to hold true in almost all points in space. The state equation is discretized by a piecewise constant discontinuous Galerkin method in time and usual conforming linear finite elements in space. For the discretization of the control we employ the same discretization technique which turns out to be equivalent to a variational discretization approach. We provide error estimates of optimal order both for the discretization of the state equation as well as for the optimal control. Numerical experiments are added to illustrate the proven rates of convergence.
Discretization methods for differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) are considered that are based on the integration of an associated inherent ordinary differential equation (ODE). This allows to make use of any discretization scheme suitable for the numerical integration of ODEs. For DAEs with symmetries it is shown that the inherent ODE can be constructed in such a way that it inherits the symmetry properties of the given DAE and geometric properties of its flow. This in particular allows the use of geometric integration schemes with a numerical flow that has analogous geometric properties.
We present a unified analysis for a family of variational time discretization methods, including discontinuous Galerkin methods and continuous Galerkin-Petrov methods, applied to non-stiff initial value problems. Besides the well-definedness of the methods, the global error and superconvergence properties are analyzed under rather weak abstract assumptions which also allow considerations of a wide variety of quadrature formulas. Numerical experiments illustrate and support the theoretical results.
We consider parameter estimation of ordinary differential equation (ODE) models from noisy observations. For this problem, one conventional approach is to fit numerical solutions (e.g., Euler, Runge--Kutta) of ODEs to data. However, such a method does not account for the discretization error in numerical solutions and has limited estimation accuracy. In this study, we develop an estimation method that quantifies the discretization error based on data. The key idea is to model the discretization error as random variables and estimate their variance simultaneously with the ODE parameter. The pro…

We study first-order optimization methods obtained by discretizing ordinary differential equations (ODEs) corresponding to Nesterov's accelerated gradient methods (NAGs) and Polyak's heavy-ball method. We consider three discretization schemes: an explicit Euler scheme, an implicit Euler scheme, and a symplectic scheme. We show that the optimization algorithm generated by applying the symplectic scheme to a high-resolution ODE proposed by Shi et al. [2018] achieves an accelerated rate for minimizing smooth strongly convex functions. On the other hand, the resulting algorithm either fails to ach…

The aim of the present work is to derive a error estimates for the Laplace eigenvalue problem in mixed form, by means of a virtual element method. With the aid of the theory for non-compact operators, we prove that the proposed method is spurious free and convergent. We prove optimal order error estimates for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Finally, we report numerical tests to confirm the theoretical results together with a rigorous computational analysis of the effects of the stabilization in the computation of the spectrum.
We present an algorithm for the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations by random enumeration of the Butcher trees used in the implementation of the Runge-Kutta method. Our Monte Carlo scheme allows for the direct numerical evaluation of an ODE solution at any given time within a certain interval, without iteration through multiple time steps. In particular, this approach does not involve a discretization step size, and it does not require the truncation of Taylor series.
Some continuous optimization methods can be connected to ordinary differential equations (ODEs) by taking continuous limits, and their convergence rates can be explained by the ODEs. However, since such ODEs can achieve any convergence rate by time scaling, the correspondence is not as straightforward as usually expected, and deriving new methods through ODEs is not quite direct. In this letter, we pay attention to stability restriction in discretizing ODEs and show that acceleration by time scaling basically implies deceleration in discretization; they balance out so that we can define an att…
Two novel parallel Newton-Krylov Balancing Domain Decomposition by Constraints (BDDC) and Dual-Primal Finite Element Tearing and Interconnecting (FETI-DP) solvers are here constructed, analyzed and tested numerically for implicit time discretizations of the three-dimensional Bidomain system of equations. This model represents the most advanced mathematical description of the cardiac bioelectrical activity and it consists of a degenerate system of two non-linear reaction-diffusion partial differential equations (PDEs), coupled with a stiff system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). A fin…
We develop a theoretical foundation for the application of Nesterov's accelerated gradient descent method (AGD) to the approximation of solutions of a wide class of partial differential equations (PDEs). This is achieved by proving the existence of an invariant set and exponential convergence rates when its preconditioned version (PAGD) is applied to minimize locally Lipschitz smooth, strongly convex objective functionals. We introduce a second-order ordinary differential equation (ODE) with a preconditioner built-in and show that PAGD is an explicit time-discretization of this ODE, which requ…
In this paper we study the stability of explicit finite difference discretizations of linear advection-diffusion equations (ADE) with arbitrary order of accuracy in the context of method of lines. The analysis first focuses on the stability of the system of ordinary differential equations (ODE) that is obtained by discretizing the ADE in space and then extends to fully discretized methods where explicit Runge-Kutta methods are used for integrating the ODE system. In particular, it is proved that all stable semi-discretization of the ADE gives rise to a conditionally stable fully discretized me…
This paper concentrates on a priori error estimates of two fully discrete coupled schemes for Biot's consolidation model based on the three-field formulation introduced by Oyarzua et al. (SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, 2016). The spatial discretizations are based on the Taylor-Hood finite elements combined with Lagrange elements for the three primary variables. For time discretization, we consider two methods. One uses the backward Euler method, and the other applies a combination of the backward Euler and Crank-Nicolson methods. A priori error estimates show that the two schemes are unco…
We present two semidiscretizations of the Camassa-Holm equation in periodic domains based on variational formulations and energy conservation. The first is a periodic version of an existing conservative multipeakon method on the real line, for which we propose efficient computation algorithms inspired by works of Camassa and collaborators. The second method, and of primary interest, is the periodic counterpart of a novel discretization of a two-component Camassa-Holm system based on variational principles in Lagrangian variables. Applying explicit ODE solvers to integrate in time, we compare t…
Projection-based model order reduction of an ordinary differential equation (ODE) results in a projected ODE. Based on this ODE, an existing reduced-order model (ROM) for finite volume discretizations satisfies the underlying conservation law over arbitrarily chosen subdomains. However, this ROM does not satisfy the projected ODE exactly but introduces an additional perturbation term. In this work, we propose a novel ROM with the same subdomain conservation properties which indeed satisfies the projected ODE exactly. We apply this ROM to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and show with…
Standard discontinuous Galerkin methods, based on piecewise polynomials of degree $ \qq=0,1$, are considered for temporal semi-discretization for second order hyperbolic equations. The main goal of this paper is to present a simple and straightforward a priori error analysis of optimal order with minimal regularity requirement on the solution. Uniform norm in time error estimates are also proved. To this end, energy identities and stability estimates of bthe discrete problem are proved for a slightly more general problem. These are used to prove optimal order a priori error estimates with mini…

We investigate the resolution of parabolic PDEs via Extreme Learning Machine (ELMs) Neural Networks, which have a single hidden layer and can be trained at a modest computational cost as compared with Deep Learning Neural Networks. Our approach addresses the time evolution by applying classical ODEs techniques and uses ELM-based collocation for solving the resulting stationary elliptic problems. In this framework, the $θ$-method and Backward Difference Formulae (BDF) techniques are investigated on some linear parabolic PDEs that are challeging problems for the stability and accuracy properties…

The combination of ordinary differential equations and neural networks, i.e., neural ordinary differential equations (Neural ODE), has been widely studied from various angles. However, deciphering the numerical integration in Neural ODE is still an open challenge, as many researches demonstrated that numerical integration significantly affects the performance of the model. In this paper, we propose the inverse modified differential equations (IMDE) to clarify the influence of numerical integration on training Neural ODE models. IMDE is determined by the learning task and the employed ODE solve…

We are interested in the numerical solution of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) in two and three dimensions. Under certain assumptions on the domain, we take advantage of the Kronecker structure arising in standard space discretizations of the differential operators and illustrate how the resulting system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) can be treated directly in matrix or tensor form. Moreover, in the framework of the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and the discrete empirical interpolation method (DEIM) we derive a two- and three-sided model order reduct…
This paper proves error estimates for $H^2$ conforming finite elements for equations which model the flow of surfaces by different powers of the mean curvature (this includes mean curvature flow). for an adapted scheme originally proposed in [17] for the inverse mean curvature flow. The scheme is based on a known regularization procedure and produces different kinds of errors, a regularization error, a finite element discretization error for the regularized problems and a full error. While in the literature and own previous work different aspects of the aforementioned error types are treated, …
In this work we analyse a PDE-ODE problem modelling the evolution of a Glioblastoma, which includes chemotaxis term directed to vasculature. First, we obtain some a priori estimates for the (possible) solutions of the model. In particular, under some conditions on the parameters, we obtain that the system does not develop blow-up at finite time. In addition, we design a fully discrete finite element scheme for the model which preserves some pointwise estimates of the continuous problem. Later, we make an adimensional study in order to reduce the number of parameters. Finally, we detect the mai…
In recent years, deep learning has been connected with optimal control as a way to define a notion of a continuous underlying learning problem. In this view, neural networks can be interpreted as a discretization of a parametric Ordinary Differential Equation which, in the limit, defines a continuous-depth neural network. The learning task then consists in finding the best ODE parameters for the problem under consideration, and their number increases with the accuracy of the time discretization. Although important steps have been taken to realize the advantages of such continuous formulations,…

In this paper, we propose a novel high order unfitted finite element method on Cartesian meshes for solving the acoustic wave equation with discontinuous coefficients having complex interface geometry. The unfitted finite element method does not require any penalty to achieve optimal convergence. We also introduce a new explicit time discretization method for the ODE system resulting from the spatial discretization of the wave equation. The strong stability and optimal $hp$-version error estimates both in time and space are established. Numerical examples confirm our theoretical results.
We investigate numerically a quasi-static elasticity system of Kachanov-type. To do so we propose an Euler time discretization combined with a suitable finite elements scheme (FEM) to handle the discretization is space. We use ODE-type arguments to prove the consistency of the scheme as well as its convergence rate. We rely on the computational platform FEniCS to perform the FEM discretizations in space needed to compute the model output. The simulation results show a good agreement with both the physics of the problem and with our previous qualitative mathematical analysis results obtained fo…
