We propose a finite element discretization for the steady, generalized Navier-Stokes equations for fluids with shear-dependent viscosity, completed with inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions and an inhomogeneous divergence constraint. We establish (weak) convergence of discrete solutions as well as a priori error estimates for the velocity vector field and the scalar kinematic pressure. Numerical experiments complement the theoretical findings.
High-order entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin methods for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations require the positivity of thermodynamic quantities in order to guarantee their well-posedness. In this work, we introduce a positivity limiting strategy for entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin discretizations constructed by blending high order solutions with a low order positivity-preserving discretization. The proposed low order discretization is semi-discretely entropy stable, and the proposed limiting strategy is positivity preserving for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes…
Discontinuous Galerkin methods of higher order are applied as temporal discretizations for the transient Navier--Stokes equations. The spatial discretization based on inf-sup stable pairs of finite element spaces is stabilised using a one-level local projection stabilisation method. Optimal error bounds for the velocity with constants independent of the viscosity parameter are obtained for the semi-discrete case. For the fully discrete case, error estimates for both velocity and pressure are given. Numerical results support the theoretical predictions.
We introduce a mimetic dual-field discretization which conserves mass, kinetic energy and helicity for three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The discretization makes use of a conservative dual-field mixed weak formulation where two evolution equations of velocity are employed and dual representations of the solution are sought for each variable. A temporal discretization, which staggers the evolution equations and handles the nonlinearity such that the resulting discrete algebraic systems are linear and decoupled, is constructed. The spatial discretization is mimetic in the…
Full moment error estimates in strong norms for numerical approximations of stochastic Navier-Stokes equations with multiplicative noise, Part I: time discretization
We provide optimal order pressure error estimates for the Crank-Nicolson semidiscretization of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Second order estimates for the velocity error are long known, we prove that the pressure error is of the same order if considered at interval midpoints, confirming previous numerical evidence. For simplicity we first give a proof under high regularity assumptions that include nonlocal compatibility conditions for the initial data, then use smoothing techniques for a proof under reduced assumptions based on standard local conditions only.
Augmented Lagrangian preconditioners have successfully yielded Reynolds-robust preconditioners for the stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, but only for specific discretizations. The discretizations for which these preconditioners have been designed possess error estimates which depend on the Reynolds number, with the discretization error deteriorating as the Reynolds number is increased. In this paper we present an augmented Lagrangian preconditioner for the Scott-Vogelius discretization on barycentrically-refined meshes. This achieves both Reynolds-robust performance and Reynol…
A numerical method for the two-dimensional, incompressible Navier--Stokes equations in vorticity--streamfunction form is proposed, which employs semi-Lagrangian discretizations for both the advection and diffusion terms, thus achieving unconditional stability without the need to solve linear systems beyond that required by the Poisson solver for the reconstruction of the streamfunction. A description of the discretization of Dirichlet boundary conditions for the semi-Lagrangian approach to diffusion terms is also presented. Numerical experiments on classical benchmarks for incompressible flow …
We consider the Virtual Element method (VEM) introduced by Beirão da Veiga, Lovadina and Vacca in 2016 for the numerical solution of the steady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations; the method has arbitrary order $k \geq 2$ and guarantees divergence-free velocities. For such discretization, we develop a residual-based a posteriori error estimator, which is a combination of standard terms in VEM analysis (residual terms, data oscillation, and VEM stabilization), plus some other terms originated by the VEM discretization of the nonlinear convective term. We show that a linear combination of t…
We consider the Virtual Element discretization of the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the heat equation where the viscosity depends on the temperature. We present the Virtual Element discretization of the coupled problem, show its well-posedness, and prove optimal error estimates. Numerical experiments which confirm the theoretical error bounds are also presented.
Stability estimates of Nyström discretizations of Helmholtz decomposition boundary integral equation formulations for the solution of Navier scattering problems in two dimensions with Dirichlet boundary conditions
This paper is concerned with the approximation of linear and nonlinearinitial-boundary-value problems of pseudo-parabolic equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions. They are discretized in space by spectral Galerkin and collocation methods based on Legendre and Chebyshev polynomials. The time integration is carried out suitably with robust schemes attending to qualitative features such as stiffness and preservation of strong stability to simulate nonregular problems more correctly. The corresponding semidiscrete and fully discrete schemes are described and the performance of the methods is …
We prove that the implicit time Euler scheme coupled with finite elements space discretization for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations on the torus subject to a random perturbation converges in $L^2(Ω)$, and describe the rate of convergence for an $H^1$-valued initial condition. This refines previous results which only established the convergence in probability of these numerical approximations. Using exponential moment estimates of the solution of the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations and convergence of a localized scheme, we can prove strong convergence of this space-time approximation. The spee…
Entropy stable schemes ensure that physically meaningful numerical solutions also satisfy a semi-discrete entropy inequality under appropriate boundary conditions. In this work, we describe a discretization of viscous terms in the compressible Navier-Stokes equations which enables a simple and explicit imposition of entropy stable no-slip (adiabatic and isothermal) and reflective (symmetry) wall boundary conditions for discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations. Numerical results confirm the robustness and accuracy of the proposed approaches.
We consider a pressure correction temporal discretization for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in EMAC form. We prove stability and error estimates for the case of mixed finite element spatial discretization, and in particular that the Gronwall constant's exponential dependence on the Reynolds number is removed (for sufficiently smooth true solutions) or at least significantly reduced compared to the commonly used skew-symmetric formulation. We also show the method preserves momentum and angular momentum, and while it does not preserve energy it does admit an energy inequality. Sever…
In this paper we prove optimal error estimates for {solutions with natural regularity} of the equations describing the unsteady motion of incompressible shear-thinning fluids. We consider a full space-time semi-implicit scheme for the discretization. The main novelty, with respect to previous results, is that we obtain the estimates directly without introducing intermediate semi-discrete problems, which enables the treatment of homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions.
We propose and analyze computationally a new fictitious domain method, based on higher order space-time finite element discretizations, for the simulation of the nonstationary, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on evolving domains. The physical domain is embedded into a fixed computational mesh such that arbitrary intersections of the moving domain's boundaries with the background mesh occur. The potential of such cut finite element techniques for higher order space-time finite element methods has rarely been studied in the literature so far and deserves further elucidation. The key ingre…

We consider the strong solution of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations in a torus subject to an additive noise. We implement a fully implicit time numerical scheme and a finite element method in space. We prove that the rate of convergence of the schemes is $η\in[0,1/2)$ in time and 1 in space. Let us mention that the coefficient $η$ is equal to the time regularity of the solution with values in $\LL^2$. Our method relies on the existence of finite exponential moments for both the solution and its time approximation. Our main idea is to use a discrete Gronwall lemma for the error estimate without a…
We present a parallelized geometric multigrid (GMG) method, based on the cell-based Vanka smoother, for higher order space-time finite element methods (STFEM) to the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations. The STFEM is implemented as a time marching scheme. The GMG solver is applied as a preconditioner for GMRES iterations. Its performance properties are demonstrated for 2d and 3d benchmarks of flow around a cylinder. The key ingredients of the GMG approach are the construction of the local Vanka smoother over all degrees of freedom in time of the respective subinterval and its efficient appl…

We prove the convergence of certain second-order numerical methods to weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations satisfying in addition the local energy inequality, and therefore suitable in the sense of Scheffer and Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg. More precisely, we treat the space-periodic case in three space-dimensions and we consider a full discretization in which the the classical Crank-Nicolson method ($θ$-method with $θ=1/2$) is used to discretize the time variable, while in the space variables we consider finite elements. The convective term is discretized in several implicit, semi-impli…
We propose and study numerically the implicit approximation in time of the Navier-Stokes equations by a Galerkin-collocation method in time combined with inf-sup stable finite element methods in space. The conceptual basis of the Galerkin-collocation approach is the establishment of a direct connection between the Galerkin method and the classical collocation methods, with the perspective of achieving the accuracy of the former with reduced computational costs in terms of less complex algebraic systems of the latter. Regularity of higher order in time of the discrete solution is ensured furthe…
This paper presents the variational discretization of the compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system, in which the viscosity and the heat conduction terms are handled within the variational approach to nonequilibrium thermodynamics as developed by one of the authors. In a first part, we review the variational framework for the Navier-Stokes-Fourier (NSF) system in the smooth setting. In a second part, we review a discrete exterior calculus based on discrete diffeomorphisms then proceed to establish the spatially discretized variational principle for the NSF system through the use of this discre…
Quasi-Optimal Error Estimates for the Incompressible Navier-Stokes Problem Discretized by Finite Element Methods and Pressure-Correction Projection with Velocity Stabilization
We study a finite-element based space-time discretisation for the 2D stochastic Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain supplemented with no-slip boundary conditions. We prove optimal convergence rates in the energy norm with respect to convergence in probability, that is convergence of order (almost) 1/2 in time and 1 in space. This was previously only known in the space-periodic case, where higher order energy estimates for any given (deterministic) time are available. In contrast to this, in the Dirichlet-case estimates are only known for a (possibly large) stopping time. We overcome th…
We present three high-order Nystrom discretization strategies of various boundary integral equation formulations of the impenetrable time-harmonic Navier equations in two dimensions. One class of such formulations is based on the four classical Boundary Integral Operators (BIOs) associated with the Green's function of the Navier operator. We consider two types of Nystrom discretizations of these operators, one that relies on Kussmaul-Martensen logarithmic splittings and the other on Alpert quadratures. In addition, we consider an alternative formulation of Navier scattering problems based on H…

We study a continuous data assimilation (CDA) algorithm for a velocity-vorticity formulation of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations in two cases: nudging applied to the velocity and vorticity, and nudging applied to the velocity only. We prove that under a typical finite element spatial discretization and backward Euler temporal discretization, application of CDA preserves the unconditional long-time stability property of the velocity-vorticity method and provides optimal long-time accuracy. These properties hold if nudging is applied only to the velocity, and if nudging is also applied to the vort…
We investigate novel fitted finite element approximations for two-phase Navier--Stokes flow. In particular, we consider both Eulerian and Arbitrary Lagrangian--Eulerian (ALE) finite element formulations. The moving interface is approximated with the help of parametric piecewise linear finite element functions. The bulk mesh is fitted to the interface approximation, so that standard bulk finite element spaces can be used throughout. The meshes describing the discrete interface in general do not deteriorate in time, which means that in numerical simulations a smoothing or a remeshing of the inte…
