Algebraic multigrid (AMG) preconditioners are considered for discretized systems of partial differential equations (PDEs) where unknowns associated with different physical quantities are not necessarily co-located at mesh points. Specifically, we investigate a $Q_2-Q_1$ mixed finite element discretization of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations where the number of velocity nodes is much greater than the number of pressure nodes. Consequently, some velocity degrees-of-freedom (dofs) are defined at spatial locations where there are no corresponding pressure dofs. Thus, AMG approaches leveraging this co-located structure are not applicable. This paper instead proposes an automatic AMG coarsening that mimics certain pressure/velocity dof relationships of the $Q_2-Q_1$ discretization. The main idea is to first automatically define coarse pressures in a somewhat standard AMG fashion and then to carefully (but automatically) choose coarse velocity unknowns so that the spatial location relationship between pressure and velocity dofs resembles that on the finest grid. To define coefficients within the inter-grid transfers, an energy minimization AMG (EMIN-AMG) is utilized. EMIN-AMG is not tied to specific coarsening schemes and grid transfer sparsity patterns, and so it is applicable to the proposed coarsening. Numerical results highlighting solver performance are given on Stokes and incompressible Navier-Stokes problems.
We present a geometric multigrid solver for the Compact Discontinuous Galerkin method through building a hierarchy of coarser meshes using a simple agglomeration method which handles arbitrary element shapes and dimensions. The method is easily extendable to other discontinuous Galerkin discretizations, including the Local DG method and the Interior Penalty method. We demonstrate excellent solver performance for Poisson's equation, provided a flux formulation is used for the operator coarsening and a suitable switch function chosen for the numerical fluxes.
Unfitted finite element methods have emerged as a popular alternative to classical finite element methods for the solution of partial differential equations and allow modeling arbitrary geometries without the need for a boundary-conforming mesh. On the other hand, the efficient solution of the resultant system is a challenging task because of the numerical ill-conditioning that typically entails from the formulation of such methods. We use an adaptive geometric multigrid solver for the solution of the mixed finite cell formulation of saddle-point problems and investigate its convergence in the…
We develop a multigrid solver for the second biharmonic problem in the context of Isogeometric Analysis (IgA), where we also allow a zero-order term. In a previous paper, the authors have developed an analysis for the first biharmonic problem based on Hackbusch's framework. This analysis can only be extended to the second biharmonic problem if one assumes uniform grids. In this paper, we prove a multigrid convergence estimate using Bramble's framework for multigrid analysis without regularity assumptions. We show that the bound for the convergence rate is independent of the scaling of the zero…
Advanced finite-element discretizations and preconditioners for models of poroelasticity have attracted significant attention in recent years. The equations of poroelasticity offer significant challenges in both areas, due to the potentially strong coupling between unknowns in the system, saddle-point structure, and the need to account for wide ranges of parameter values, including limiting behavior such as incompressible elasticity. This paper was motivated by an attempt to develop monolithic multigrid preconditioners for the discretization developed in [48]; we show here why this is a diffic…
Most research on preconditioners for time-dependent PDEs has focused on implicit multi-step or diagonally-implicit multi-stage temporal discretizations. In this paper, we consider monolithic multigrid preconditioners for fully-implicit multi-stage Runge-Kutta (RK) time integration methods. These temporal discretizations have very attractive accuracy and stability properties, but they couple the spatial degrees of freedom across multiple time levels, requiring the solution of very large linear systems. We extend the classical Vanka relaxation scheme to implicit RK discretizations of saddle poin…

Multigrid methods are popular for solving linear systems derived from discretizing PDEs. Local Fourier Analysis (LFA) is a technique for investigating and tuning multigrid methods. P-multigrid is popular for high-order or spectral finite element methods, especially on unstructured meshes. In this paper, we introduce LFAToolkit.jl, a new Julia package for LFA of high-order finite element methods. LFAToolkit.jl analyzes preconditioning techniques for arbitrary systems of second order PDEs and supports mixed finite element methods. Specifically, we develop LFA of p-multigrid with arbitrary second…

Numerical simulation of incompressible viscous flow, in particular in three space dimensions, continues to remain a challenging task. Space-time finite element methods feature the natural construction of higher order discretization schemes. They offer the potential to achieve accurate results on computationally feasible grids. Linearizing the resulting algebraic problems by Newton's method yields linear systems with block matrices built of $(k+1)\times (k+1)$ saddle point systems, where $k$ denotes the polynomial order of the variational time discretization. We demonstrate numerically the effi…

Isogeometric Analysis is a high-order discretization method for boundary value problems that uses a number of degrees of freedom which is as small as for a low-order method. Standard isogeometric discretizations require a global parameterization of the computational domain. In non-trivial cases, the domain is decomposed into patches having separate parameterizations and separate discretization spaces. If the discretization spaces agree on the interfaces between the patches, the coupling can be done in a conforming way. Otherwise, non-conforming discretizations (utilizing discontinuous Galerkin…
We present a parallelized geometric multigrid (GMG) method, based on the cell-based Vanka smoother, for higher order space-time finite element methods (STFEM) to the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations. The STFEM is implemented as a time marching scheme. The GMG solver is applied as a preconditioner for GMRES iterations. Its performance properties are demonstrated for 2d and 3d benchmarks of flow around a cylinder. The key ingredients of the GMG approach are the construction of the local Vanka smoother over all degrees of freedom in time of the respective subinterval and its efficient appl…
This paper builds on the algebraic theory in the companion paper [Algebraic Error Analysis for Mixed-Precision Multigrid Solvers] to obtain discretization-error-accurate solutions for linear elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) by mixed-precision multigrid solvers. It is often assumed that the achievable accuracy is limited by discretization or algebraic errors. On the contrary, we show that the quantization error incurred by simply storing the matrix in any fixed precision quickly begins to dominate the total error as the discretization is refined. We extend the existing theory to a…
It is well known that the choice of the iterative method is crucial in determining the speed of the converged solution. This article presents a detailed comparison between several iterative techniques for solving incmopressible Navier-Stokes equations. The numerical approaches implemented in the solver include Jacobi, Gauss-Siedel, Successive Over Relaxation, Alternating Direct Implicit and Multigrid methods. The results reveal that multigrid method is the most powerful iterative method among all other methods investigated in terms of the computational time and the number of iterations.
We present the deep neural network multigrid solver (DNN-MG) that we develop for the instationary Navier-Stokes equations. DNN-MG improves computational efficiency using a judicious combination of a geometric multigrid solver and a recurrent neural network with memory. DNN-MG uses the multi-grid method to classically solve on coarse levels while the neural network corrects interpolated solutions on fine ones, thus avoiding the increasingly expensive computations that would have to be performed there. This results in a reduction in computation time through DNN-MG's highly compact neural network…
Parallel-in-time methods for partial differential equations (PDEs) have been the subject of intense development over recent decades, particularly for diffusion-dominated problems. It has been widely reported in the literature, however, that many of these methods perform quite poorly for advection-dominated problems. Here we analyze the particular iterative parallel-in-time algorithm of multigrid reduction-in-time (MGRIT) for discretizations of constant-wave-speed linear advection problems. We focus on common method-of-lines discretizations that employ upwind finite differences in space and Run…
In this paper we present a numerical approach to solve the Navier-Stokes equations on moving domains with second-order accuracy. The space discretization is based on the ghost-point method, which falls under the category of unfitted boundary methods, since the mesh does not adapt to the moving boundary. The equations are advanced in time by using Crank-Nicholson. The momentum and continuity equations are solved simultaneously for the velocity and the pressure by adopting a proper multigrid approach. To avoid the checkerboard instability for the pressure, a staggered grid is adopted, where velo…
The present work develops hybrid multigrid methods for high-order discontinuous Galerkin discretizations of elliptic problems. Fast matrix-free operator evaluation on tensor product elements is used to devise a computationally efficient PDE solver. The multigrid hierarchy exploits all possibilities of geometric, polynomial, and algebraic coarsening, targeting engineering applications on complex geometries. Additionally, a transfer from discontinuous to continuous function spaces is performed within the multigrid hierarchy. This does not only further reduce the problem size of the coarse-grid p…
We introduce a homogeneous multigrid method in the sense that it uses the same HDG discretization scheme for Poisson's equation on all levels. In particular, we construct a stable injection operator and prove optimal convergence of the method under the assumption of elliptic regularity. Numerical experiments underline our analytical findings.
We study efficient simulation of steady state for rarefied gas flow, which is modeled by the Boltzmann equation with BGK-type collision term. A nonlinear multigrid solver is proposed to resolve the efficiency issue by the following approaches. The unified framework of numerical regularized moment method is first adopted to derive the high-quality discretization of the underlying problem. A fast sweeping iteration is introduced to solve the derived discrete problem more efficiently than the usual time-integration scheme on a single level grid. Taking it as the smoother, the nonlinear multigrid …
In this study, we present an $hp$-multigrid preconditioner for a divergence-conforming HDG scheme for the generalized Stokes and the Navier-Stokes equations using an augmented Lagrangian formulation. Our method relies on conforming simplicial meshes in two- and three-dimensions. The $hp$-multigrid algorithm is a multiplicative auxiliary space preconditioner that employs the lowest-order space as the auxiliary space, and we developed a geometric multigrid method as the auxiliary space solver. For the generalized Stokes problem, the crucial ingredient of the geometric multigrid method is the equ…
We propose a multigrid method to solve the linear system of equations arising from a hybrid discontinuous Galerkin (in particular, a single face hybridizable, a hybrid Raviart--Thomas, or a hybrid Brezzi--Douglas--Marini) discretization of a Stokes problem. Our analysis is centered around the augmented Lagrangian approach and we prove uniform convergence in this setting. Numerical experiments underline our analytical findings.
