A Fano problem is an enumerative problem of counting $r$-dimensional linear subspaces on a complete intersection in $\mathbb{P}^n$ over a field of arbitrary characteristic, whenever the corresponding Fano scheme is finite. A classical example is enumerating lines on a cubic surface. We study the monodromy of finite Fano schemes $F_{r}(X)$ as the complete intersection $X$ varies. We prove that the monodromy group is either symmetric or alternating in most cases. In the exceptional cases, the monodromy group is one of the Weyl groups $W(E_6)$ or $W(D_k)$.
The Tannakian formalism allows to attach to any subvariety of an abelian variety an algebraic group in a natural way. The arising groups are closely related to moduli questions such as the Schottky problem, but their geometric interpretation is still mysterious. We show that for the theta divisor on the intermediate Jacobian of a cubic threefold, the Tannaka group is an exceptional group of type E_6. This is the first known exceptional case, and it suggests a connection with the monodromy of the Gauss map.
Let $X$ be a toric Fano manifold and denote by $Crit(f_X) \subset (\mathbb{C}^{\ast})^n$ the solution scheme of the corresponding Landau-Ginzburg system of equations. For toric Del-Pezzo surfaces and various toric Fano threefolds we define a map $L : Crit(f_X) \rightarrow Pic(X)$ such that $\mathcal{E}_L(X) : = L(Crit(f_X)) \subset Pic(X)$ is a full strongly exceptional collection of line bundles. We observe the existence of a natural monodromy map $$ M : π_1(L(X) \setminus R_X,f_X) \rightarrow Aut(Crit(f_X))$$ where $L(X)$ is the space of all Laurent polynomials whose Newton polytope is equal…
In this paper we consider a conjecture formulated by the second author in occasion of the 1998 ICM in Berlin (arXiv:math/9807034v2). This conjecture states the equivalence, for a Fano variety $X$, of the semisimplicity condition for the quantum cohomology $QH^\bullet(X)$ with the existence condition of full exceptional collections in the derived category of coherent sheaves $\mathcal D^b(X)$. Furthermore, in its quantitative formulation, the conjecture also prescribes an explicit relationship between the monodromy data of $QH^\bullet(X)$ and characteristic classes of both $X$ and objects of th…
For a toric Fano manifold $X$ denote by $Crit(X) \subset (\mathbb{C}^{\ast})^n$ the solution scheme of the Landau-Ginzburg system of equations of $X$. Examples of toric Fano manifolds with $rk(Pic(X)) \leq 3$ which admit full strongly exceptional collections of line bundles were recently found by various authors. For these examples we construct a map $E : Crit(X) \rightarrow Pic(X)$ whose image $\mathcal{E}=\left \{ E(z) \vert z \in Crit(X) \right \}$ is a full strongly exceptional collection satisfying the M-aligned property. That is, under this map, the groups $Hom(E(z),E(w))$ for $z,w \in C…
A problem list in singularity theory. Most of these problems are related with the algorithmic enumeration of possible topological types of non-discriminant Morsifications of real function singularities, and/or with the Picard--Lefschetz theory.
We study the Dynkin diagram associated to the monodromy of direct sums of polynomials. The monodromy problem asks under which conditions on a polynomial, the monodromy of a vanishing cycle generates the whole homology of a regular fiber. We consider the case $y^4+g(x)$, which is a generalization of the results of Christopher and Marde$\check{s}$ić about the monodromy problem for hyperelliptic curves. Moreover, We solve the monodromy problem for direct sums of fourth degree polynomials.
A Fano problem consists of enumerating linear spaces of a fixed dimension on a variety, generalizing the classical problem of 27 lines on a cubic surface. Those Fano problems with finitely many linear spaces have an associated Galois group that acts on these linear spaces and controls the complexity of computing them in coordinates via radicals. Galois groups of Fano problems were first studied by Jordan, who considered the Galois group of the problem of 27 lines on a cubic surface. Recently, Hashimoto and Kadets nearly classified all Galois groups of Fano problems by determining them in a spe…
In the present work we use the Levelt's valuation theory to describe all monodromy representations that can be realized by Riemann equation. Also we show that if the monodromy of Riemann equation lies in $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$, then such a monodromy can be realized by a more special Riemann-Sturm-Liouville equation as well. After all the criterion for hypergeometric equation to have monodromy in $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ is presented.
Determining when the birational automorphism group of a Fano variety is finite is an interesting and difficult problem. The main technique for studying this problem is by the Noether-Fano method. This method has been effective in studying this problem for Fano varieties of index one and two. The purpose of this paper is to give a new approach to this problem, and to show that in every positive characteristic there are Fano varieties of arbitrarily large index with finite (or even trivial) birational automorphisms. To do this we prove that these varieties admit ample and birationally equivarian…
We find a relation between a cubic hypersurface $Y$ and its Fano variety of lines $F(Y)$ in the Grothendieck ring of varieties. We prove that if the class of an affine line is not a zero-divisor in the Grothendieck ring of varieties, then Fano variety of lines on a smooth rational cubic fourfold is birational to a Hilbert scheme of two points on a K3 surface; in particular, general cubic fourfold is irrational.
We solve the infinitesimal Torelli problem for $3$-dimensional quasi-smooth ${\mathbb{Q}}$-Fano hypersurfaces with at worst terminal singularities. We also find infinite chains of double coverings of increasing dimension which alternatively distribute themselves in examples and counterexamples for the infinitesimal Torelli claim and which share the analogue, and in some cases the same, Hodge-diagram properties as the length $3$ Gushel-Mukai chain of prime smooth Fanos of coindex $3$ and degree $10$.
We show that Ambro-Kawamata's non-vanishing conjecture holds true for a quasi-smooth WCI X which is Fano or Calabi-Yau, i.e. we prove that, if H is an ample Cartier divisor on X, then |H| is not empty. If X is smooth, we further show that the general element of |H| is smooth. We then verify Ambro-Kawamata's conjecture for any quasi-smooth weighted hypersurface. We also verify Fujita's freeness conjecture for a Gorenstein quasi-smooth weighted hypersurface. For the proofs, we introduce the arithmetic notion of regular pairs and enlighten some interesting connection with the Frobenius coin probl…
In many situations, the monodromy group of enumerative problems will be the full symmetric group. In this paper, we study a similar phenomenon on the rational curves in $|\mathcal{O}(1)|$ on a generic K3 surface of fixed genus over $\mathbb{C}$ as the K3 surface varies. We prove that when the K3 surface has genus $g$, $1\leq g\leq 3$, the monodromy group is the full symmetric group.
We study critical behaviour and connection problem for a Painleve' 6 equation. We construct solutions of WDVV eqs. using the isomonodromic deformation method and the Painleve' equations. We find algebraic solutions of WDVV and Gromov-Witten invariants of projective space.
The Wronskian associates to d linearly independent polynomials of degree at most n, a non-zero polynomial of degree at most d(n-d). This can be viewed as giving a flat, finite morphism from the Grassmannian Gr(d,n) to projective space of the same dimension. In this paper, we study the monodromy groupoid of this map. When the roots of the Wronskian are real, we show that the monodromy is combinatorially encoded by Schutzenberger's jeu de taquin; hence we obtain new geometric interpretations and proofs of a number of results from jeu de taquin theory, including the Littlewood-Richardson rule.
We study a second-order linear differential equation known as the deformed cubic oscillator, whose isomonodromic deformations are controlled by the first Painlev{é} equation. We use the generalised monodromy map for this equation to give solutions to the infinite-dimensional Riemann-Hilbert problems arising from the Donaldson-Thomas theory of the A2 quiver. These are the first known solutions to such problems beyond the uncoupled case. The appendix by Davide Masoero contains a WKB analysis of the asymptotics of the monodromy map.
We consider the problem of existence of Neron models for a family of abelian varieties over a base of dimension greater than 1. We show that when S is of equicharacteristic zero, the condition of toric additivity introduced in [Ore18] is sufficient for the existence of a Neron model, and also necessary under some extra assumptions. Furthermore, we give an equivalent formulation of toric additivity in terms of monodromy action on the l-adic Tate module.
We solve the Hurwitz monodromy problem for degree-4 covers. That is, the Hurwitz space H_{4,g} of all simply branched covers of P^1 of degree 4 and genus g is an unramified cover of the space P_{2g+6} of (2g+6)-tuples of distinct points in P^1. We determine the monodromy of pi_1(P_{2g+6}) on the points of the fiber. This turns out to be the same problem as the action of pi_1(P_{2g+6}) on a certain local system of Z/2-vector spaces. We generalize our result by treating the analogous local system with Z/N coefficients, gcd(3,N)=1, in place of Z/2. This in turn allows us to answer a question of E…
Gorenstein Fano polytopes arising from finite partially ordered sets will be introduced. Then we study the problem which partially ordered sets yield smooth Fano polytopes.
We consider the problem to determine which blow-ups along subvarieties in products of two projective spaces are log Fano. By describing the nef cones of such blow-ups with special centers, we give a partial classification result. For each example, explicit boundary divisors are also given.
Given an ample line bundle on a toric surface, a question of Donaldson asks which simple closed curves can be vanishing cycles for nodal degenerations of smooth curves in the complete linear system. This paper provides a complete answer. This is accomplished by reformulating the problem in terms of the mapping class group-valued monodromy of the linear system, and giving a precise determination of this monodromy group.

We consider Galois/monodromy groups arising in computer vision applications, with a view towards building more efficient polynomial solvers. The Galois/monodromy group allows us to decide when a given problem decomposes into algebraic subproblems, and whether or not it has any symmetries. Tools from numerical algebraic geometry and computational group theory allow us to apply this framework to classical and novel reconstruction problems. We consider three classical cases--3-point absolute pose, 5-point relative pose, and 4-point homography estimation for calibrated cameras--where the decomposi…
Schinzel's original problem was to describe when an expression f(x)-g(y), with f,g nonconstant and having complex coefficients, is reducible. We call such an (f,g) a Schinzel pair if this happens nontrivially: f(x)-g(y) is newly reducible. Fried accomplished this as a special case of a result in "http://www.math.uci.edu/~mfried/paplist-ff/dav-red.pdf">dav-red.pdf, when f is indecomposable. That work featured using primitive permutation representations. Even after 42 years going beyond using primitivity is a challenge to the monodromy method despite many intervening related papers (see http://w…
We study the problem of existence of Kähler--Einstein metrics on smooth Fano threefolds of Picard rank one and anticanonical degree $22$ that admit a faithful action of the multiplicative group $\mathbb{C}^\ast$. We prove that, except possibly two explicitly described cases, all such smooth Fano threefolds are Kähler--Einstein.
We study the greatest common divisor problem for torus invariant blowing-up morphisms of nonsingular toric Fano varieties. Our main result applies the theory of Okounkov bodies together with an arithmetic form of Cartan's Second Main theorem, which has been established by Ru and Vojta. It also builds on Silverman's geometric concept of greatest common divisor. As a special case of our results, we deduce a bound for the generalized greatest common divisor of pairs of nonzero algebraic numbers.
We investigate Fano schemes of conditionally generic intersections, i.e. of hypersurfaces in projective space chosen generically up to additional conditions. Via a correspondence between generic properties of algebraic varieties and events in probability spaces that occur with probability one, we use the obtained results on Fano schemes to solve a problem in machine learning.
In this paper, we consider terminal reflexive polytopes arising from finite directed graphs and study the problem of deciding which directed graphs yield smooth Fano polytopes. We show that any centrally symmetric or pseudo-symmetric smooth Fano polytopes can be obtained from directed graphs. Moreover, by using directed graphs, we provide new examples of smooth Fano polytopes whose corresponding varieties admit Kähler--Einstein metrics.
mu-constant families of holomorphic function germs with isolated singularities are considered from a global perspective. First, a monodromy group from all families which contain a fixed singularity is studied. It consists of automorphisms of the Milnor lattice which respect not only the intersection form, but also the Seifert form and the monodromy. We conjecture that it contains all such automorphisms, modulo {id,-id}. Second, marked singularities are defined and global moduli spaces for right equivalence classes of them are established. The conjecture on the group would imply that these modu…
The pure braid group Γof a quadruply-punctured Riemann sphere acts on the SL(2,C)-moduli M of the representation variety of such sphere. The points in M are classified into Γ-orbits. We show that, in this case, the monodromy groups of many explicit solutions to the Riemann-Hilbert problem are subgroups of SU(2). Most of these solutions are examples of representations that have dense images in SU(2), but with finite Γ-orbits in M. These examples relate to explicit immersions of constant mean curvature surfaces.
We address the problem of classification of contact Fano manifolds. It is conjectured that every such manifold is necessarily homogeneous. We prove that the Killing form, the Lie algebra grading and parts of the Lie bracket can be read from geometry of an arbitrary contact manifold. Minimal rational curves on contact manifolds (or contact lines) and their chains are the essential ingredients for our constructions. Along the way we collect several facts about bundles of projective lines admitting a contractible section, which might be of independent interest.
In this paper we derive a list of all the possible indecomposable normalized rank--two vector bundles without intermediate cohomology on the prime Fano threefolds and on the complete intersection Calabi Yau threefolds, say $V$, of Picard number $ρ=1$. For any such bundle $\E$, if it exists, we find the projective invariants of the curves $C \subset V$ which are the zero-locus of general global sections of $\E$. In turn, a curve $C \subset V$ with such invariants is a section of a bundle $\E$ from our lists. This way we reduce the problem for existence of such bundles on $V$ to the problem for …
In this note we consider the problem of determining which Fano manifolds can be realised as fibres of a Mori fibre space. In particular, we study the case of toric varieties, Fano manifolds with high index and some Fano manifolds with high Picard rank.
We give sufficient conditions, on data including the monodromy representation, the Stokes matrices and the Poincare ranks at prescribed singularities, to solve the generalized Riemann-Hilbert problem with irregular singularities. We recover in particular the irreducibility condition on the monodromy given by Bolibrukh and Kostov in the classical case. We apply the above criteria to solve the inverse problem in differential Galois theory with a better control of the singularities.
