We consider the heat equation defined by a generalized measure theoretic Laplacian on $[0,1]$. This equation describes heat diffusion in a bar such that the mass distribution of the bar is given by a non-atomic Borel probabiliy measure $μ$, where we do not assume the existence of a strictly positive mass density. We show that weak measure convergence implies convergence of the corresponding generalized Laplacians in the strong resolvent sense. We prove that strong semigroup convergence with respect to the uniform norm follows, which implies uniform convergence of solutions to the corresponding heat equations. This provides, for example, an interpretation for the mathematical model of heat diffusion on a bar with gaps in that the solution to the corresponding heat equation behaves approximately like the heat flow on a bar with sufficiently small mass on these gaps.
We consider the Cauchy problem for heat equation with fractional Laplacian and exponential nonlinearity. We establish local well-posedness result in Orlicz spaces. We derive the existence of global solutions for small initial data. We obtain decay estimates for large time in Lebesgue spaces.
We obtain an upper heat kernel bound for the Laplacian on metric graphs arising as one skeletons of certain polygonal tilings of the plane, which reflects the one dimensional as well as the two dimensional nature of these graphs.
Local and global properties of minimal solutions for the heat equation generated by the Dirichlet fractional Laplacian negatively perturbed by Hardy's potentials on open subsets of $\R^d$ are analyzed. As a byproduct we obtain instantaneous blow-up of nonnegative solutions in the supercritical case.
We investigate the $p-$Laplace heat equation $u_t-Δ_p u=ζ(t)f(u)$ on a bounded smooth domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$. Using differential inequalities arguments, we prove blow-up results under suitable conditions on $ζ, f$, and the initial data $u_0$. We also give an upper bound for the blow-up time in each case.
We consider the nonlinear half laplacian heat equation $$ u_t+(-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}} u-|u|^{p-1}u=0,\quad \mathbb{R}^n\times (0, T). $$ We prove that all blows-up are type I, provided that $n \leq 4$ and $ 1<p<p_{*} (n)$ where $ p_{*} (n)$ is an explicit exponent which is below $\frac{n+1}{n-1}$, the critical Sobolev exponent. Central to our proof is a Giga-Kohn type monotonicity formula for half laplacian and a Liouville type theorem for self-similar nonlinear heat equation. This is the first instance of a monotonicity formula at the level of the nonlocal equation, without invoking the extension …
This paper concerns the existence of global solutions for the following class of heat equation involving the 1-Laplacian operator of the Dirichlet problem $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{llc} u_{t}-Δ_1 u=f(u) & \text{in}\ & Ω\times (0, +\infty) , u =0 & \text{in} & \partialΩ\times (0, +\infty), u(x,0)=u_{0}(x)& \text{in} &Ω, \end{array}\right. \leqno{(P)} $$ where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ is a smooth bounded domain, $N \geq 1$ and $f:\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}$ is a continuous function satisfying some technical conditions, and $Δ_1 u=\text{div}\left(\frac{Du}{|Du|}\right)$ denotes the 1-Laplacian operat…
We establish sharp two-sided bounds on the heat kernel of the fractional Laplacian, perturbed by a drift having critical-order singularity, by transferring it to appropriate weighted space with singular weight.
By using Duhamel's formula, we prove sharp two-sided estimates for the heat kernel of spectral fractional Laplacian with time-dependent gradient perturbation in bounded $C^{1,1}$ domains. Moreover, we also obtain gradient estimate as well as Hölder continuity of the gradient of the heat kernel.
We first study the so-called Heat equation with two families of elliptic operators whichare fully nonlinear, and depend on some eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix. The equationwith operators including the "large" eigenvalues has strong similarities with a Heatequation in lower dimension whereas, surprisingly, for operators including "small" eigenvalues it shares some properties with some transport equations. In particular, forthese operators, the Heat equation (which is nonlinear) not only does not have theproperty that "disturbances propagate with infinite speed" but may lead to quenchingin fi…
We give a direct proof of the sharp two-sided estimates, recently established in [4,9], for the Dirichlet heat kernel of the fractional Laplacian with gradient perturbation in $C^{1, 1}$ open sets by using Duhamel formula. We also obtain a gradient estimate for the Dirichlet heat kernel. Our assumption on the open set is slightly weaker in that we only require $D$ to be $C^{1,θ}$ for some $θ\in (α/2, 1]$.
We provide sharp two-sided estimates on the Dirichlet heat kernel $k_1(t,x,y)$ for the Laplacian in a ball. The result accurately describes the exponential behaviour of the kernel for small times and significantly improves the qualitatively sharp results known so far. As a consequence we obtain the full description of the kernel $k_1(t,x,y)$ in terms of its global two-sided sharp estimates.
Let $Ω$ be a $C^\infty$-smooth bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n \geq 1$, and let the matrix ${\bf a} \in C^\infty (\overlineΩ;\R^{n^2})$ be symmetric and uniformly elliptic. We consider the $L^2(Ω)$-realization $A$ of the operator $-\mydiv ( {\bf a} \nabla \cdot)$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We perturb $A$ by some real valued potential $V \in C_0^\infty (Ω)$ and note $A_V=A+V$. We compute the asymptotic expansion of $\mbox{tr}\left( e^{-t A_V}-e^{-t A}\right)$ as $t \downarrow 0$ for any matrix ${\bf a}$ whose coefficients are homogeneous of degree $0$. In the particular case where…
We consider sub-Laplacians in open bounded sets in a homogeneous Carnot group and study their spectral properties. We prove that these operators have a pure point spectrum, and prove the existence of the spectral gap. In addition, we give applications to the small ball problem for a hypoelliptic Brownian motion and the large time behavior of the heat content in a regular domain.
The purpose of this article is to establish upper and lower estimates for the integral kernel of the semigroup exp(-tP) associated to a classical, strongly elliptic pseudodifferential operator P of positive order on a closed manifold. The Poissonian bounds generalize those obtained for perturbations of fractional powers of the Laplacian. In the selfadjoint case, extensions to t in C_+ are studied. In particular, our results apply to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann semigroup.
The purpose in this paper is to determine the global behavior of solutions to the initial-boundary value problems for energy-subcritical and critical semilinear heat equations by initial data with lower energy than the mountain pass level in energy spaces associated with self-adjoint operators satisfying Gaussian upper bounds. Our self-adjoint operators include the Dirichlet Laplacian on an open set, Robin Laplacian on an exterior domain, and Schrödinger operators, etc.
We use heat kernels or eigenfunctions of the Laplacian to construct local coordinates on large classes of Euclidean domains and Riemannian manifolds (not necessarily smooth, e.g. with $\mathcal{C}^α$ metric). These coordinates are bi-Lipschitz on embedded balls of the domain or manifold, with distortion constants that depend only on natural geometric properties of the domain or manifold. The proof of these results relies on estimates, from above and below, for the heat kernel and its gradient, as well as for the eigenfunctions of the Laplacian and their gradient. These estimates hold in the no…
Let $X$ be an abstract orientable not necessarily compact CR manifold of dimension $2n+1$, $n\geq1$, and let $L^k$ be the $k$-th tensor power of a CR complex line bundle $L$ over $X$. Suppose that condition $Y(q)$ holds at each point of $X$, we establish asymptotics of the heat kernel of Kohn Laplacian with values in $L^k$. As an application, we give a heat kernel proof of Morse inequalities on compact CR manifolds. When $X$ admits a transversal CR $\mathbb R$-action, we also establish asymptotics of the $\mathbb R$-equivariant heat kernel of Kohn Laplacian with values in $L^k$. As an applicat…
In this paper, we derive global sharp heat kernel estimates for symmetric alpha-stable processes (or equivalently, for the fractional Laplacian with zero exterior condition) in two classes of unbounded C^{1,1} open sets in R^d: half-space-like open sets and exterior open sets. These open sets can be disconnected. We focus in particular on explicit estimates for p_D(t,x,y) for all t>0 and x, y\in D. Our approach is based on the idea that for x and y in $D$ far from the boundary and t sufficiently large, we can compare p_D(t,x,y) to the heat kernel in a well understood open set: either a half-sp…
We study the heat content function, the heat trace function, and questions of isospectrality for the Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a compact manifold with smooth boundary in the context of finite coverings and warped products.
I prove the existence of small time heat expansion for the Laplace operator on an analytic hypersurface with an isolated singularity. First we obtain a local parametrization of the hypersurface near the singularity. We introduce the notion of quasihomogeneous tangent cone. Then perturb the parametrization of the cone employing a Newton scheme and obtain a parametrization with functions of specific form. These allow us to obtain local models for the Laplace operator near the singularity. These are operators with irregular singularities. We derive the estimates required by singular asymptotics.
We study a free boundary optimization problem in heat conduction, ruled by the infinity-Laplace operator, with lower temperature bound and a volume constraint. We obtain existence and regularity results and derive geometric properties for the solution and the free boundaries.
We study the rapid stabilization of the heat equation on the 1-dimensional torus using the backstepping method with a Fredholm transformation. We prove that, under some assumption on the control operator, two scalar controls are necessary and sufficient to get controllability and rapid stabilization. This classical framework allows us to present the backstepping method with Fredholm transformations on Laplace operators in a sharp functional setting, which is the main objective of this work. Finally, we prove that the same Fredholm transformation also leads to the local rapid stability of the v…
We study the sub-Laplacian of the $15$-dimensional unit sphere which is obtained by lifting with respect to the Hopf fibration the Laplacian of the octonionic projective space. We obtain in particular explicit formulas for its heat kernel and deduce an expression for the Green function of a related sub-Laplacian. As a byproduct we also obtain the spectrum of the sub-Laplacian, the small-time asymptotics of the heat kernel and explicitly compute the sub-Riemannian distance.
The standard problem for the classical heat equation posed in a bounded domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb R^n$ is the initial and boundary value problem. If the Laplace operator is replaced by a version of the fractional Laplacian, the initial and boundary value problem can still be solved on the condition that the non-zero boundary data must be singular, i.e., the solution $u(t,x)$ blows up as $x$ approaches $\partial Ω$ in a definite way. In this paper we construct a theory of existence and uniqueness of solutions of the parabolic problem with singular data taken in a very precise sense, and also admit…
We study the horizontal Laplacian $Δ^H$ associated to the Hopf fibration $S^3\to S^2$ with arbitrary Chern number $k$. We use representation theory to calculate the spectrum, describe the heat kernel and obtain the complete heat trace asymptotics of $Δ^H$. We express the Green functions for associated Poisson semigroups and obtain bounds for their contraction properties and Sobolev inequalities for $Δ^H$. The bounds and inequalities improve as $|k|$ increases.
We consider classes of simply connected planar domains which are isophasal, ie, have the same scattering phase $s(ł)$ for all $ł> 0$. This is a scattering-theoretic analogue of isospectral domains. Using the heat invariants and the determinant of the Laplacian, Osgood, Phillips and Sarnak showed that each isospectral class is sequentially compact in a natural $C$-infinity topology. In this paper, we show sequential compactness of each isophasal class of domains. To do this we define the determinant of the exterior Laplacian and use it together with the heat invariants (the heat invariants and …
The main goal of this work is to study the sub-Laplacian of the unit sphere which is obtained by lifting with respect to the Hopf fibration the Laplacian of the quaternionic projective space. We obtain in particular explicit formulas for its heat kernel and deduce an expression for the Green function of the conformal sub-Laplacian and small-time asymptotics. As a byproduct of our study we also obtain several results related to the sub-Laplacian of a projected Hopf fibration.
We develop the differential geometric and geometric analytic studies of Hamiltonian systems. Key ingredients are the curvature operator, the weighted Laplacian, and the associated Riccati equation. We prove the appropriate generalizations of Bochner--Weitzenböck formula and Laplacian comparison theorem, and study the heat flow.
We derive an integral representation for the subelliptic heat kernel of the complex anti-de Sitter fibration. Our proof is different from the one used in Jing Wang \cite{Wan} since it appeals to the commutativity of the D'Alembertian and of the Laplacian acting on the vertical variable rather than the analytic continuation of the heat semigroup of the real hyperbolic space. Our approach also sheds the light on the connection between the sub-Laplacian of the above fibration and the so-called generalized Maass Laplacian, and on the role played by the odd dimensional real hyperbolic space.
We present an invariant definition of the hypoelliptic Laplacian on sub-Riemannian structures with constant growth vector, using the Popp's volume form introduced by Montgomery. This definition generalizes the one of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in Riemannian geometry. In the case of left-invariant problems on unimodular Lie groups we prove that it coincides with the usual sum of squares. We then extend a method (first used by Hulanicki on the Heisenberg group) to compute explicitly the kernel of the hypoelliptic heat equation on any unimodular Lie group of type I. The main tool is the noncom…
We prove large-time Gaussian upper bounds for continuous-time heat kernels of Laplacians on graphs with unbounded geometry. Our estimates hold for centers of large balls satisfying a Sobolev inequality and volume doubling. Distances are measured with respect to an intrinsic metric with finite distance balls and finite jump size. The Gaussian decay is given by Davies' function which is natural and sharp in the graph setting. Furthermore, we find a new polynomial correction term which does not blow up at zero. Although our main focus is unbounded Laplacians, the results are new even for the norm…
We study the survival probability of a particle diffusing in a two-dimensional domain, bounded by a smooth absorbing boundary. The short-time expansion of this quantity depends on the geometric characteristics of the boundary, whilst its long-time asymptotics is governed by the lowest eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian defined on the domain. We present a simple algorithm for calculation of the short-time expansion for an arbitrary "star-shaped" domain. The coefficients are expressed in terms of powers of boundary curvature, integrated around the circumference of the domain. Based on this ex…
The geometry of the quaternionic anti-de Sitter fibration is studied in details. As a consequence, we obtain formulas for the horizontal Laplacian and subelliptic heat kernel of the fibration. The heat kernel formula is explicit enough to derive small time asymptotics. Related twistor spaces and corresponding heat kernels are also discussed and the connection to the quaternionic magnetic Laplacian is done.
In this paper we characterize the discrete Hölder spaces by means of the heat and Poisson semigroups associated to the discrete Laplacian. These characterizations allow us to get regularity properties of fractional powers of the discrete Laplacian and the Bessel potentials along these spaces and also in the discrete Zygmund spaces in a more direct way than using the pointwise definition of the spaces. To obtain our results, it has been crucial to get boundedness properties of the heat and Poisson kernels and their derivatives in both space and time variables. We believe that these estimates ar…
We study the heat kernel of the sub-Laplacian L on the CR sphere S2n+1. An explicit and geometrically meaningful formula for the heat kernel is obtained. As a by-product we recover in a simple way the Green function of the conformal sub- Laplacian -L + n2 that was obtained by Geller [12], and also get an explicit formula for the sub-Riemannian distance. The key point is to work in a set of coordinates that reflects the symmetries coming from the fibration S2n+1 \rightarrow CPn.
We show that a twist of a three-dimensional tube of uniform cross-section yields an improved decay rate for the heat semigroup associated with the Dirichlet Laplacian in the tube. The proof employs Hardy inequalities for the Dirichlet Laplacian in twisted tubes and the method of self-similar variables and weighted Sobolev spaces for the heat equation.
In this note, we study the sub-Laplacian of the 15-dimensional octonionic anti-de Sitter space which is obtained by lifting with respect to the anti-de Sitter fibration the Laplacian of the octonionic hyperbolic space $\mathbb{O}H^1$. We also obtain two integral representations for the corresponding subelliptic heat kernel.
We prove on-diagonal bounds for the heat kernel of the Dirichlet Laplacian $-Δ^D_Ω$ in locally twisted three-dimensional tubes $Ω$. In particular, we show that for any fixed $x$ the heat kernel decays for large times as $\mathrm{e}^{-E_1t}\, t^{-3/2}$, where $E_1$ is the fundamental eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian on the cross section of the tube. This shows that any, suitably regular, local twisting speeds up the decay of the heat kernel with respect to the case of straight (untwisted) tubes. Moreover, the above large time decay is valid for a wide class of subcritical operators defined…
In this paper we use the heat equation in a group of Heisenberg type $\mathbb{G}$ to provide a unified treatment of the two very different extension problems for the time independent pseudo-differential operators $\mathscr L^s$ and $\mathscr L_s$, $0< s\leq 1$. Here, $\mathscr L^s$ is the fractional power of the horizontal Laplacian, and $\mathscr L_s$ is the conformal fractional power of the horizontal Laplacian on $\mathbb{G}$. One of our main objective is compute explicitly the fundamental solutions of these nonlocal operators by a new approach exclusively based on partial differential equa…
We consider operators of the form $L u(x) = \sum_{y \in \mathbb{Z}} k(x-y) \big( u(y) - u(x)\big)$ on the one-dimensional lattice with symmetric, integrable kernel $k$. We prove several results stating that under certain conditions on the kernel the operator $L$ satisfies the curvature-dimension condition $CD_Υ(0,F)$ (recently introduced by two of the authors) with some $CD$-function $F$, where attention is also paid to the asymptotic properties of $F$ (exponential growth at infinity and power-type behaviour near zero). We show that $CD_Υ(0,F)$ implies a Li-Yau inequality for positive solution…
Let $V$ be a finite set, $E \subset 2^{V} $ be a set of hyperedges, and $w : E \to (0, \infty)$ be an edge weight. On the (wighted) hypergraph $G = (V ,E ,w )$, we can define a multivalued nonlinear operator $L_{G,p}$ ($p \in [1 ,\infty )$) as the subdifferential of a convex function on $\mathbb{R} ^V $, which is called "hypergraph $p$-Laplacian." In this article, we first introduce an inequality for this operator $L_{G,p}$ which resembles the Poincaré-Wirtinger inequality in PDEs. Next we consider an ordinary differential equation on $\mathbb{R} ^V $ governed by $L_{G,p}$, which is referred a…
