Let $p$ be a prime number. We prove that the $P=W$ conjecture for $\mathrm{SL}_p$ is equivalent to the $P=W$ conjecture for $\mathrm{GL}_p$. As a consequence, we verify the $P=W$ conjecture for genus 2 and $\mathrm{SL}_p$. For the proof, we compute the perverse filtration and the weight filtration for the variant cohomology associated with the $\mathrm{SL}_p$-Hitchin moduli space and the $\mathrm{SL}_p$-twisted character variety, relying on Gröchenig-Wyss-Ziegler's recent proof of the topological mirror conjecture by Hausel-Thaddeus.
Finally we discuss obstructions of studying the cohomology of the $\mathrm{SL}_n$-Hitchin moduli space via compact hyper-Kähler manifolds.
We study the topology of Hitchin fibrations via abelian surfaces. We establish the P=W conjecture for genus $2$ curves and arbitrary rank. In higher genus and arbitrary rank, we prove that P=W holds for the subalgebra of cohomology generated by even tautological classes. Furthermore, we show that all tautological generators lie in the correct pieces of the perverse filtration as predicted by the P=W conjecture. In combination with recent work of Mellit, this reduces the full conjecture to the multiplicativity of the perverse filtration. Our main technique is to study the Hitchin fibration as a…
We define the universal Hitchin discriminants in the case of $\mathrm{Sp}(2n)$ Hitchin spectral covers, describe their components, and express their divisor classes in terms of standard generators of the rational Picard group of the moduli spaces of such spectral covers with variable base curve.
This paper provides an introduction to the mathematical notion of \emph{quantum curves}. We start with a concrete example arising from a graph enumeration problem. We then develop a theory of quantum curves associated with Hitchin spectral curves. A conjecture of Gaiotto, which predicts a new construction of opers from a Hitchin spectral curve, is explained. We give a step-by-step detailed description of the proof of the conjecture for the case of rank $2$ Higgs bundles. Finally, we identify the two concepts of \textit{quantum curve} arising from the topological recursion formalism with the li…
We prove that the moduli spaces of twisted $\mathrm{SL}_n$ and $\mathrm{PGL}_n$-Higgs bundles on a smooth projective curve have the same (stringy) class in the Grothendieck ring of rational Chow motives. On the level of Hodge numbers this was conjectured by Hausel and Thaddeus, and recently proven by Groechenig, Ziegler and the second author. To adapt their argument, which relies on p-adic integration, we use a version of motivic integration with values in rational Chow motives and the geometry of Néron models to evaluate such integrals on Hitchin fibers.
Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a parahoric group scheme over a complex projective curve $X$ of genus greater than one. Let $\mathrm{Bun}_{\mathcal{G}}$ denote the moduli stack of $\mathcal{G}$-torsors on $X$. We prove several results concerning the Hitchin map on $T^*\!\mathrm{Bun}_{\mathcal{G}}$. We first show that the parahoric analogue of the global nilpotent cone is isotropic and use this to prove that $\mathrm{Bun}_{\mathcal{G}}$ is "very good" in the sense of Beilinson-Drinfeld. We then prove that the parahoric Hitchin map is a Poisson map whose generic fibres are abelian varieties. Together, thes…
We study mirror symmetry on the singular locus of the Hitchin system at two levels. Firstly, by covering it by (supports of) $(BBB)$-branes, corresponding to Higgs bundles reducing their structure group to the Levi subgroup of some parabolic subgroup $\mathrm{P}$, whose conjectural dual $(BAA)$-branes we describe. Heuristically speaking, the latter are given by Higgs bundles reducing their structure group to the unipotent radical of $\mathrm{P}$. Secondly, when $\mathrm{P}$ is a Borel subgroup, we are able to construct a family of hyperholomorphic bundles on the $(BBB)$-brane, and study the va…
Here we survey several results and conjectures on the cohomology of the total space of the Hitchin system: the moduli space of semi-stable rank n and degree d Higgs bundles on a complex algebraic curve C. The picture emerging is a dynamic mixture of ideas originating in theoretical physics such as gauge theory and mirror symmetry, Weil conjectures in arithmetic algebraic geometry, representation theory of finite groups of Lie type and Langlands duality in number theory.
The Hitchin morphism is a map from the moduli space of Higgs bundles $\mathscr{M}_X$ to the Hitchin base $\mathscr{B}_X$, where $X$ is a smooth projective variety. When $X$ has dimension at least two, this morphism is not surjective in general. Recently, Chen-Ngô introduced a closed subscheme $\mathscr{A}_X$ of $\mathscr{B}_X$, which is called the space of spectral data. They proved that the Hitchin morphism factors through $\mathscr{A}_X$ and conjectured that $\mathscr{A}_X$ is the image of the Hitchin morphism. We prove that when $X$ is a smooth projective surface, this conjecture is true fo…
We consider the moduli space of polystable $L$-twisted $G$-Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface $X$, where $G$ is a real reductive Lie group, and $L$ is a holomorphic line bundle over $X$. Evaluating the Higgs field at a basis of the ring of polynomial invariants of the isotropy representation, one defines the Hitchin map. This is a map to an affine space, whose dimension is determined by $L$ and the degrees of the polynomials in the basis. Building up on the work of Kostant-Rallis and Hitchin, in this paper, as a first step in the study of the Hitchin map, we construct a section of th…
We prove that the perverse Leray filtration for the Hitchin morphism is locally constant in families, thus providing some evidence towards the validity of the $P=W$ conjecture due to de Cataldo, Hausel and Migliorini in non Abelian Hodge theory.
Spectral transformation is known to set up a birational morphism between the Hitchin and Beauville-Mukai integrable systems. The corresponding phase spaces are: (a) the cotangent bundle of the moduli space of bundles over a curve C, and (b) a symmetric power of the cotangent surface T^*(C). We conjecture that this morphism can be quantized, and we check this conjecture in the case where C is a rational curve with marked points and rank 2 bundles. We discuss the relation of the resulting isomorphism of quantized algebras with Sklyanin's separation of variables.
A complex integrable system determines a family of complex tori over a Zariski-open and dense subset in its base. This family in turn yields an integral variation of Hodge structures of weight $\pm 1$. In this paper, we study the converse of this procedure. Starting from an integral variation of Hodge structures of weight $\pm 1$, we give a criterion for when its associated family of complex tori carries a Lagrangian structure, i.e. for when it can be given the structure of an integrable system. This sheaf-theoretic approach to (the smooth parts of) complex integrable systems enables us to app…
In his proof of the fundamental lemma, Ngô established the product formula for the Hitchin fibration over the anisotropic locus. One expects this formula over the larger generically regular semisimple locus, and we confirm this by deducing the relevant vanishing statement for torsors over loop groups $R((t))$ from a general formula for $\mathrm{Pic}(R((t)))$. In the build up to the product formula, we present general algebraization, approximation, and invariance under Henselian pairs results for torsors, give short new proofs for the Elkik approximation theorem and the Chevalley isomorphism $\…
Hitchin in [Duke Math. J. 54 (1), 91-114 (1987)] introduced a proper morphism from the moduli space of stable $G$-Higgs bundles ($G=\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{C}),\mathrm{Sp}(2m,\mathbb{C})$ and $\mathrm{SO}(n,\mathbb{C})$) over a curve to a vector space of invariant polynomials and he described the generic fibers of that morphism. In this paper, we first describe the generic Hitchin fibers for the moduli space of stable parabolic projective symplectic/orthogonal Higgs bundles without fixing the determinant. We also describe the generic fibers when the determinant is trivial.
A conjectural recursive relation for the Poincaré polynomial of the Hitchin moduli space is derived from wallcrossing in the refined local Donaldson-Thomas theory of a curve. A doubly refined generalization of this theory is also conjectured and shown to similarly determine the Hodge polynomial of the same moduli space.
We study the locus of the moduli space of Higgs bundles on a curve given by those Higgs bundles obtained by pushforward under an unramified cover. We equip these loci with a hyperholomorphic bundle so that they can be viewed as BBB-branes, and we introduce corresponding BAA-branes which can be described via Hecke modifications. We then show how these branes are naturally dual via explicit Fourier--Mukai transform, where we recall that the structure group $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{C})$ is Langlands self dual. It is noteworthy that these branes lie over the singular locus of the Hitchin fibration. …
A basis for the space of generalized theta functions of level one for the spin groups, parameterized by the theta characteristics (the even theta characteristcs for the odd spin groups) on a curve, is shown to be projectively flat over the moduli space of curves (for Hitchin's connection). The symplectic strange duality conjecture, conjectured by Beauville is shown to hold for all curves of genus at least two, by using Abe's proof of the conjecture for generic curves, and the above monodromy result.
Let $S\to C$ be a smooth projective surface with numerically trivial canonical bundle fibered onto a curve. We prove the multiplicativity of the perverse filtration with respect to the cup product on $H^*(S^{[n]},\mathbb{Q})$ for the natural morphism $S^{[n]}\to C^{(n)}$. We also prove the multiplicativity for five families of Hitchin systems obtained in a similar way and compute the perverse numbers of the Hitchin moduli spaces. We show that for small values of $n$ the perverse numbers match the predictions of the numerical version of the de Cataldo-Hausel-Migliorini $P=W$ conjecture and of t…
The moduli spaces of flat $\mathrm{SL}_2$- and $\mathrm{PGL}_2$-connections are known to be singular SYZ-mirror partners. We establish the equality of Hodge numbers of their intersection (stringy) cohomology. In rank two, this answers a question raised by Tamás Hausel in Remark 3.30 of "Global topology of the Hitchin system".
A $\mathrm{U}(p,q)$-Higgs bundle on a Riemann surface (twisted by a line bundle) consists of a pair of holomorphic vector bundles, together with a pair of (twisted) maps between them. Their moduli spaces depend on a real parameter $α$. In this paper we study wall crossing for the moduli spaces of $α$-polystable twisted $\mathrm{U}(p,q)$-Higgs bundles. Our main result is that the moduli spaces are birational for a certain range of the parameter and we deduce irreducibility results using known results on Higgs bundles. Quiver bundles and the Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence play an essential rol…
The notion of a universal building associated with a point in the Hitchin base is introduced. This is a building equipped with a harmonic map from a Riemann surface that is initial among harmonic maps which induce the given cameral cover of the Riemann surface. In the rank one case, the universal building is the leaf space of the quadratic differential defining the point in the Hitchin base. The main conjectures of this paper are: (1) the universal building always exists; (2) the harmonic map to the universal building controls the asymptotics of the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence and the non-a…
For semisimple Lie groups, moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on a Riemann surface correspond to representation varieties for the surface fundamental group. In many cases, natural topological invariants label connected components of the moduli spaces. Hitchin representations into split real forms, and maximal representations into Hermitian Lie groups, are the only previously know cases where natural invariants do not fully distinguish connected components. In this note we announce the existence of new such exotic components in the moduli spaces for the groups $\mathrm{SO}(p,q)$ with $2<p<q$. These…
We study the cameral and spectral data for the moduli space of polystable $\mathrm{SU}(p+1,p)$-Higgs bundles and deduce the latter from the former. As an application, we obtain that the Toledo invariant classifies the connected components of the regular fibers of the Hitchin map.
We propose a proof for conjectures of Langlands, Shelstad and Waldspurger known as the fundamental lemma for Lie algebras and the non-standard fundamental lemma. The proof is based on a study of the decomposition of the l-adic cohomology of the Hitchin fibration into direct sum of simple perverse sheaves.
We provide further evidence to the $P=W$ conjecture of de Cataldo, Hausel and Migliorini, by checking it in the Painlevé cases. Namely, we compare the perverse Leray filtration induced by the Hitchin map on the cohomology spaces of the Dolbeault moduli space and the weight filtration on the cohomology spaces of the irregular character variety corresponding to each of the Painlevé $I-VI$ systems. We find that the two filtrations agree. Along the way, we prove the Geometric $P=W$ conjecture of Katzarkov, Noll, Pandit and Simpson in the Painlevé cases, and show that in these cases the Geometric $…
A string theoretic framework is presented for the work of Hausel and Rodriguez-Vilegas as well as de Cataldo, Hausel and Migliorini on the cohomology of character varieties. The central element of this construction is an identification of the cohomology of the Hitchin moduli space with BPS states in a local Calabi-Yau threefold. This is a summary of several talks given during the Moduli Space Program 2011 at Isaac Newton Institute.
In this paper we consider the topological side of a problem which is the analogue of Sen's S-duality testing conjecture for Hitchin's moduli space of rank 2 stable Higgs bundles of fixed determinant of odd degree over a Riemann surface. We prove that all intersection numbers in the compactly supported cohomology vanish, i.e. "there are no topological L^2 harmonic forms on Hitchin's space". This result generalizes the well known vanishing of the Euler characteristic of the moduli space of rank 2 stable bundles of fixed determinant of odd degree over the given Riemann surface. Our proof shows th…
We prove that the structure group of any Albert algebra over an arbitrary field is $R$-trivial. This implies the Tits-Weiss conjecture for Albert algebras and the Kneser-Tits conjecture for isotropic groups of type $\mathrm{E}_{7,1}^{78}, \mathrm{E}_{8,2}^{78}$. As a further corollary, we show that some standard conjectures on the groups of $R$-equivalence classes in algebraic groups and the norm principle are true for strongly inner forms of type $^1\mathrm{E}_6$.
The $P = W$ conjecture identifies the perverse filtration of the Hitchin system on the cohomology of the moduli space of Higgs bundles with the weight filtration of the corresponding character variety. In this paper, we introduce an enumerative approach to to this problem; our technique only uses the structure of the equivariant intersection numbers on the moduli space of Higgs bundles, and little information about the topology of the Hitchin map. In the rank $2$ case, starting from the known intersection numbers of the moduli of stable bundles, we derive the equivariant intersection numbers o…
We disprove Hitchin's conjecture to the effect that for a generic complex structure on a simply connected spin complex surface the square root of the canonical bundle has no more cohomology then is predicted by the Riemann--Roch theorem. (This paper will appear in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc.)
We study Lie subalgebras $L$ of the vector fields $\mathrm{Vec}^{c}({\mathbb A}^{2})$ of affine 2-space ${\mathbb A}^{2}$ of constant divergence, and we classify those $L$ which are isomorphic to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{aff}_{2}$ of the group $\mathrm{Aff}_{2}(K)$ of affine transformations of ${\mathbb A}^{2}$. We then show that the following three statements are equivalent: (i) The Jacobian Conjecture holds in dimension 2; (ii) All Lie subalgebras $L \subset \mathrm{Vec}^{c}({\mathbb A}^{2})$ isomorphic to $\mathfrak{aff}_{2}$ are conjugate under $\mathrm{Aut}({\mathbb A}^{2})$; (iii) All …
We state a conjecture on how to construct affine pavings for cohomologically pure projective algebraic varieties, which admit an action of torus such that the fixed points and $1$-dimensional orbits are finite. Experiments on the affine grassmannian for $\mathrm{GL}_{3}$ under the guideline of this conjecture, together with the work of Berenstein-Fomin-Zelevinsky and Kamnitzer, have led to the conjecture that the truncated affine grassmannians for $\mathrm{GL}_{r+1}$ admit affine pavings. For the group $\mathrm{GL}_{3}$, we construct affine pavings for the truncated affine grassmannians, and w…
This article is an expanded version of talks given by the authors in Oberwolfach, Bochum, and at the Fano Conference in Torino. Some new results (e. g. the material concerning flag varieties, Quot spaces over $¶^1$, and the generalized quiver representations) were included. The main goal is the construction of gauge theoretical Gromov-Witten type invariants of arbitrary genus associated with certain symplectic factorization problems with additional symmetry, and the computation of these invariants in terms of complex geometric objects. The main tool for describing moduli spaces associated with…
