The Courant sigma model is a 3-dimensional topological sigma model of AKSZ type which has been used for the systematic description of closed strings in non-geometric flux backgrounds. In particular, the expression for the fluxes and their Bianchi identities coincide with the local form of the axioms of a Courant algebroid. On the other hand, the axioms of a Courant algebroid also coincide with the conditions for gauge invariance of the Courant sigma model. In this paper we embed this interplay between background fluxes of closed strings, gauge (or more precisely BRST) symmetries of the Courant sigma model and axioms of a Courant algebroid into an $L_\infty$-algebra structure. We show how the complete BV-BRST formulation of the Courant sigma model is described in terms of $L_\infty$-algebras. Moreover, the morphism between the $L_\infty$-algebra for a Courant algebroid and the one for the corresponding sigma model is constructed.
Courant sigma-models encode the geometric and non-geometric fluxes of compactified closed string theory as generalized Wess-Zumino terms and exhibit their relation to Courant algebroids. In recent work, we proposed a doubled membrane sigma-model that establishes the corresponding connection to double field theory and its algebroid structure. The strategy is to consider a "large" Courant sigma-model over a doubled target spacetime and identify a suitable projection that leads to a sigma-model for doubled fields. In this note, we provide further details for this construction. Starting from the B…
Using the symmetry properties of two-dmensional sigma models, we introduce a notion of the Beltrami-Courant differential, so that there is a natural homotopy Gerstenhaber algebra related to it. We conjecture that the generalized Maurer-Cartan equation for the corresponding $L_{\infty}$ subalgebra gives solutions to the Einstein equations.
We show that in analogy to the introduction of Poisson structures twisted by a closed 3-form by Park and Klimcik-Strobl, the study of three dimensional sigma models with Wess-Zumino term leads in a likewise way to twisting of Courant algebroid structures by closed 4-forms H. The presentation is kept pedagogical and accessible to physicists as well as to mathematicians, explaining in detail in particular the interplay of field transformations in a sigma model with the type of geometrical structures induced on a target. In fact, as we also show, even if one does not know the mathematical concept…
We study aspects of two-dimensional nonlinear sigma models with Wess-Zumino term corresponding to a nonclosed 3-form, which may arise upon dimensional reduction in the target space. Our goal in this paper is twofold. In a first part, we investigate the conditions for consistent gauging of sigma models in the presence of a nonclosed 3-form. In the Abelian case, we find that the target of the gauged theory has the structure of a contact Courant algebroid, twisted by a 3-form and two 2-forms. Gauge invariance constrains the theory to (small) Dirac structures of the contact Courant algebroid. In t…
We investigate geometric aspects of double field theory (DFT) and its formulation as a doubled membrane sigma-model. Starting from the standard Courant algebroid over the phase space of an open membrane, we determine a splitting and a projection to a subbundle that sends the Courant algebroid operations to the corresponding operations in DFT. This describes precisely how the geometric structure of DFT lies in between two Courant algebroids and is reconciled with generalized geometry. We construct the membrane sigma-model that corresponds to DFT, and demonstrate how the standard T-duality orbit…
We discuss a natural extension of the AKSZ construction to the case where the source is given by a supermanifold with a chosen integral form. We then focus on the special case with the target given by a Courant algebroid. In the simplest case this leads to the BV version of the super Chern-Simons theory, as developed by Grassi-Maccaferri and Cremonini-Grassi. In the case of exact Courant algebroids we derive the 2-dimensional $\mathcal N=(1,1)$ sigma model on the boundary, together with the Wess-Zumino term, paralleling the approach of Ševera in the bosonic case.
We construct a topological sigma model and a current algebra based on a Courant algebroid structure on a Poisson manifold. In order to construct models, we reformulate the Poisson Courant algebroid by supergeometric construction on a QP-manifold. A new duality of Courant algebroids which transforms H-flux and R-flux is proposed, where the transformation is interpreted as a canonical transformation of a graded symplectic manifold.
We give a detailed exposition of the Alexandrov-Kontsevich-Schwarz- Zaboronsky superfield formalism using the language of graded manifolds. As a main illustarting example, to every Courant algebroid structure we associate canonically a three-dimensional topological sigma-model. Using the AKSZ formalism, we construct the Batalin-Vilkovisky master action for the model.
We define a quasiclassical limit of the Lian-Zuckerman homotopy BV algebra (quasiclassical LZ algebra) on the subcomplex, corresponding to "light modes", i.e. the elements of zero conformal weight, of the semi-infinite (BRST) cohomology complex of the Virasoro algebra associated with vertex operator algebra (VOA) with a formal parameter. We also construct a certain deformation of the BRST differential parametrized by a constant two-component tensor, such that it leads to the deformation of the $A_{\infty}$-subalgebra of the quasiclassical LZ algebra. Altogether this gives a functor the categor…
Membrane sigma-models have been used for the systematic description of closed strings in non-geometric flux backgrounds. In particular, the conditions for gauge invariance of the corresponding action functionals were related to the Bianchi identities for the fluxes. In this contribution we demonstrate how to express these Bianchi identities in terms of homotopy relations of the underlying $L_\infty$-algebra for the case of the Courant sigma-model. We argue that this result can be utilized in understanding the constraint structure of Double Field Theory and the corresponding membrane sigma-mode…
Deformation theory refers to an apparatus in many parts of math and physics for going from an infinitesimal (= first order) deformation to a full deformation, either formal or convergent appropriately. If the algebra being deformed is that of observables, the result is deformation quantization, independent of any realization in terms of Hilbert space operators. There are very important but rare cases in which a formula for a full deformation is known. For physics, the most important is the Moyal-Weyl star product formula. In this paper, we concentrate on deformations of Courant algebroid struc…
We reformulate the compatibility condition between a generalized metric and a small (non-maximal rank) Dirac structure in an exact Courant algebroid found in the context of the gauging of strings and formulated by means of two connections in purely Dirac-geometric terms. The resulting notion, a transverse generalized metric, is also what is needed for the dynamics on the reduced phase space of a string theory.
We study AKSZ-type BV constructions for the topological A- and B-models within a double field theory formulation that incorporates backgrounds with geometric and non-geometric fluxes. We relate them to a Courant sigma-model, on an open membrane, corresponding to a generalized complex structure, which reduces to the A- or B-models on the boundary. We introduce S-duality at the level of the membrane sigma-model based on the generalized complex structure, which exchanges the related AKSZ field theories, and interpret it as topological S-duality of the A- and B-models. Our approach leads to new cl…
We introduce a technique to realise brane wrapping and double dimensional reduction in the context of AKSZ topological sigma models and also in their target spaces, which are symplectic $L_n$-algebroids (i.e. QP-manifolds). Our procedure involves a novel coisotropic reduction combined with an AKSZ transgression that realises degree-shifting; the reduced QP-manifold depends on topological data of the `wrapped' cycle. We check our procedure against the known rules for fluxes under wrapping in the context of M-theory/type IIA duality, and we also find a new relation between Courant algebroids and…
We review and develop the general properties of $L_\infty$ algebras focusing on the gauge structure of the associated field theories. Motivated by the $L_\infty$ homotopy Lie algebra of closed string field theory and the work of Roytenberg and Weinstein describing the Courant bracket in this language we investigate the $L_\infty$ structure of general gauge invariant perturbative field theories. We sketch such formulations for non-abelian gauge theories, Einstein gravity, and for double field theory. We find that there is an $L_\infty$ algebra for the gauge structure and a larger one for the fu…
We introduce a new topological sigma model, whose fields are bundle maps from the tangent bundle of a 2-dimensional world-sheet to a Dirac subbundle of an exact Courant algebroid over a target manifold. It generalizes simultaneously the (twisted) Poisson sigma model as well as the G/G-WZW model. The equations of motion are satisfied, iff the corresponding classical field is a Lie algebroid morphism. The Dirac Sigma Model has an inherently topological part as well as a kinetic term which uses a metric on worldsheet and target. The latter contribution serves as a kind of regulator for the theory…
We construct L$_{\infty}$ algebras for general `initial data' given by a vector space equipped with an antisymmetric bracket not necessarily satisfying the Jacobi identity. We prove that any such bracket can be extended to a 2-term L$_{\infty}$ algebra on a graded vector space of twice the dimension, with the 3-bracket being related to the Jacobiator. While these L$_{\infty}$ algebras always exist, they generally do not realize a non-trivial symmetry in a field theory. In order to define L$_{\infty}$ algebras with genuine field theory realizations, we prove the significantly more general theor…
We reinterpret the generalised Lie derivative of M-theory $E_6$ generalised geometry as hamiltonian flow on a graded symplectic supermanifold. The hamiltonian acts as the nilpotent derivative of the tensor hierarchy of exceptional field theory. This construction is an M-theory analogue of the Courant algebroid and reveals the $L_\infty$-algebra underlying the tensor hierarchy. The AKSZ construction identifies that same hamiltonian with the lagrangian of a 7-dimensional generalisation of Chern-Simons theory that reduces to the M5-brane Wess-Zumino term on 5-brane boundaries. The exercise repeat…
We develop quantization techniques for describing the nonassociative geometry probed by closed strings in flat non-geometric R-flux backgrounds M. Starting from a suitable Courant sigma-model on an open membrane with target space M, regarded as a topological sector of closed string dynamics in R-space, we derive a twisted Poisson sigma-model on the boundary of the membrane whose target space is the cotangent bundle T^*M and whose quasi-Poisson structure coincides with those previously proposed. We argue that from the membrane perspective the path integral over multivalued closed string fields …
This is the second in a series of papers discussing in the framework of gerbe theory canonical and geometric aspects of the 2d nonlinear sigma model in the presence of conformal defects in the worldsheet. Employing the formal tools worked out in the first paper of the series, 1101.1126 [hep-th], a thorough analysis of rigid symmetries of the sigma model is carried out with emphasis on algebraic structures on generalised tangent bundles over the target space of the theory and over its state space that give rise to a realisation of the symmetry algebra on states. The analysis leads to a proposal…
We briefly review the description of the internal sector of supergravity theories in the language of generalised geometry and how this gives rise to a description of supersymmetric backgrounds as integrable geometric structures. We then review recent work, featuring holomorphic Courant algebroids, on the description of $\mathcal N=1$ heterotic flux vacua. This work studied the finite deformation problem of the Hull-Strominger system, guided by consideration of the superpotential functional on the relevant space of geometries. It rewrote the system in terms of the Maurer-Cartan set of a particu…
We study the first order form of the NS string sigma model allowing for worldsheet couplings corresponding on the target space to a bi-vector, a two-form and an inverse metric. Lifting the topological sector of this action to three dimensions produces several Wess-Zumino like terms which encode the bi-vector generalization of the Courant bracket. This bracket may be familiar to physicists through the (H_{ijk},F_{ij}^{k},Q_i^{jk},R^{ijk}) notation for non-geometric backgrounds introduced by Shelton-Taylor-Wecht. The non-geometricity of the string theory in encoded in the global properties of th…
In this paper, we present a purely algebraic formulation of higher gauge theory and gauged sigma models based on the abstract theory of graded commutative algebras and their morphisms. The formulation incorporates naturally BRST symmetry and is also suitable for AKSZ type constructions. It is also shown that for a full--fledged BV formulation including ghost degrees of freedom, higher gauge and gauged sigma model fields must be viewed as internal smooth functions on the shifted tangent bundle of a space time manifold valued in a shifted L_infty-algebroid encoding symmetry. The relationship to …
The Bianchi identities for bosonic fluxes in supergravity can receive higher derivative quantum and string corrections, the most well known being that of Heterotic theory $d H = \tfrac{1}{4}α'(\text{tr } F^2 - \text{tr } R^2)$. Less studied are the modifications at order $R^4$ that may arise, for example, in the Bianchi identity for the seven-form flux of M theory compactifications. We argue that such corrections appear to be incompatible with the exceptional generalised geometry description of the lower order supergravity, and seem to imply a gauge algebra for the bosonic potentials that cann…
It is shown that the large $N$ limit of SU(N) YM in $curved$ $m$-dim backgrounds can be subsumed by a higher $m+n$ dimensional gravitational theory which can be identified to an $m$-dim generally invariant gauge theory of diffs $N$, where $N$ is an $n$-dim internal space (Cho, Sho, Park, Yoon). Based on these findings, a very plausible geometrical interpretation of the $AdS/CFT$ correspondence could be given. Conformally invariant sigma models in $D=2n$ dimensions with target non-compact SO(2n,1) groups are reviewed. Despite the non-compact nature of the SO(2n,1), the classical action and Hami…
A DFT algebroid is a special case of the metric (or Vaisman) algebroid, shown to be relevant in understanding the symmetries of double field theory. In particular, a DFT algebroid is a structure defined on a vector bundle over doubled spacetime equipped with the C-bracket of double field theory. In this paper we give the definition of a DFT algebroid as a curved $L_\infty$-algebra and show how implementation of the strong constraint of double field theory can be formulated as an $L_\infty$-algebra morphism. Our results provide a useful step towards coordinate invariant descriptions of double f…
A study of sigma models whose target space is a group G that admits a compatible Poisson structure is presented. The natural action of O(D,D;Z) on the generalised tangent bundle TG+T*G and a generalisation of the Courant bracket that appears are reviewed. This background provides a concrete example where the generalised geometry and doubled geometry descriptions are both well understood. Connections between the two formalisms are discussed and the world-sheet theory from Hamiltonian and Lagrangian perspectives is investigated. The comparisons between the approaches given by generalised geometr…
We give a review of truncated L$_\infty$ algebras, as used in the study of higher gauge theory. These structures are believed to hold the correct properties to adequately describe gauge theory of extended objects. We discuss how to construct topological higher-gauge-invariant theories and how their solutions relate to multisymplectic geometries. We also show how Courant algebroids fit into this formalism, so as to be able to study higher gauge theory on generalized geometric bundles, i.e. on $ TΣ\oplus T^*Σ$, for some space-time $Σ$. We will see that via this formalism we can match and explain…
We compute the phase diagram in the N\to\infty limit for lattice RP^{N-1}, CP^{N-1} and QP^{N-1} sigma-models with the quartic action, and more generally for mixed isovector/isotensor models. We show that the N=\infty limit exhibits phase transitions that are forbidden for any finite N. We clarify the origin of these pathologies by examining the exact solution of the one-dimensional model: we find that there are complex zeros of the partition function that tend to the real axis as N\to\infty. We conjecture the correct phase diagram for finite N as a function of the spatial dimension d. Along t…
String theory still remains one of the promising candidates for a unification of the theory of gravity and quantum field theory. One of its essential parts is relativistic description of moving multi-dimensional objects called membranes (or p-branes) in a curved spacetime. On the classical field theory level, they are described by an action functional extremalising the volume of a manifold swept by a propagating membrane. This and related field theories are collectively called membrane sigma models. Differential geometry is an important mathematical tool in the study of string theory. It turns…
Preliminary investigations of the topological phase of string theory along the lines of a (restricted) $\dot{w}_{\infty}$ non-linear sigma model are provided. Gauge fixing the w gravity gauge fields by preserving a geometric identity Lorenz covariantizes the w-particle and gauge covariantizes the YM. The notion of foliation ghosts is introduced. Connection between $\dot{w}_{\infty}$ and homotopy associative algebras is indicated. The second quantized twistor space of string theory is constructed and compared with the first quantised one. Speculations about the relevance of the massive string f…
We study a new class of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras W_\infty(p,q) generalizing the standard W_\infty algebra, viewed as a tensor operator algebra of SU(1,1) in a group-theoretic framework. Here we interpret W_\infty(p,q) either as an infinite continuation of the pseudo-unitary symmetry U(p,q), or as a "higher-U(p,q)-spin extension" of the diffeomorphism algebra diff(p,q) of the N=p+q torus U(1)^N. We highlight this higher-spin structure of W_\infty(p,q) by developing the representation theory of U(p,q) (discrete series), calculating higher-spin representations, coherent states and derivi…
In this paper, we quantize universal gauge groups such as SU(\infty), as well as their homogeneous spaces, in the sigma-C*-algebra setting. More precisely, we propose concise definitions of sigma-C*-quantum groups and sigma-C*-quantum homogeneous spaces and explain these concepts here. At the same time, we put these definitions in the mathematical context of countably compactly generated spaces as well as C*-compact quantum groups and homogeneous spaces. We also study the representable K-theory of these spaces and compute it for the quantum homogeneous spaces associated to the universal gauge …

We explain how twistor theory represents the self-dual sector of four dimensional gravity in terms of the loop group of Poisson diffeomorphisms of the plane via Penrose's non-linear graviton construction. The symmetries of the self-dual sector are generated by the corresponding loop algebra $Lw_{1+\infty}$ of the algebra $w_{1+\infty}$ of these Poisson diffeomorphisms. We show that these coincide with the infinite tower of soft graviton symmetries in tree-level perturbative gravity recently discovered in the context of celestial amplitudes. We use a twistor sigma model for the self-dual sector…
Non-commutative gauge theories with a non-constant NC-parameter are investigated. As a novel approach, we propose that such theories should admit an underlying L$_\infty$ algebra, that governs not only the action of the symmetries but also the dynamics of the theory. Our approach is well motivated from string theory. We recall that such field theories arise in the context of branes in WZW models and briefly comment on its appearance for integrable deformations of AdS$_5$ sigma models. For the SU(2) WZW model, we show that the earlier proposed matrix valued gauge theory on the fuzzy 2-sphere ca…
We compactify M(atrix) theory on Riemann surfaces Sigma with genus g>1. Following [1], we construct a projective unitary representation of pi_1(Sigma) realized on L^2(H), with H the upper half-plane. As a first step we introduce a suitably gauged sl_2(R) algebra. Then a uniquely determined gauge connection provides the central extension which is a 2-cocycle of the 2nd Hochschild cohomology group. Our construction is the double-scaling limit N\to\infty, k\to-\infty of the representation considered in the Narasimhan-Seshadri theorem, which represents the higher-genus analog of 't Hooft's clock a…
Originally proposed as an $O(d,d)$-invariant formulation of classical closed string theory, double field theory (DFT) offers a rich source of mathematical structures. Most prominently, its gauge algebra is determined by the so-called C-bracket, a generalization of the Courant bracket of generalized geometry, in the sense that it reduces to the latter by restricting the theory to solutions of a "strong constraint". Recently, infinitesimal deformations of these structures in the string sigma model coupling $α'$ were found. In this short contribution, we review constructing the Drinfel'd double o…
In this paper, we quantize universal gauge groups such as SU(\infty), in the sigma-C*-algebra setting. More precisely, we propose a concise definition of sigma-C*-quantum groups and explain the concept here. At the same time, we put this definition in the mathematical context of countably compactly generated groups as well as C*-compact quantum groups.
We show that there are precisely two, up to conjugation, anti-involutions sigma_{\pm} of the algebra of differential operators on the circle preserving the principal gradation. We classify the irreducible quasifinite highest weight representations of the central extension \hat{D}^{\pm} of the Lie subalgebra of this algebra fixed by - sigma_{\pm}, and find the unitary ones. We realize them in terms of highest weight representations of the central extension of the Lie algebra of infinite matrices with finitely many non-zero diagonals over the truncated polynomial algebra C[u] / (u^{m+1}) and its…
Noncommutative geometry governs the physics of quantum Hall (QH) effects. We introduce the Weyl ordering of the second quantized density operator to explore the dynamics of electrons in the lowest Landau level. We analyze QH systems made of $N$-component electrons at the integer filling factor $ν=k\leq N$. The basic algebra is the SU(N)-extended W$_{\infty}$. A specific feature is that noncommutative geometry leads to a spontaneous development of SU(N) quantum coherence by generating the exchange Coulomb interaction. The effective Hamiltonian is the Grassmannian $G_{N,k}$ sigma model, and the …
Using embedding of complex curves in the complex projective plane $\bf{P }^{2}$, we develop a \emph{non planar} topological 3-vertex formalism for topological strings on the family of local Calabi-Yau threefolds $X^{(m,-m,0) }=\mathcal{O}(m)\oplus \mathcal{O}(-m)\to E^{(t,\infty)}$. The base $E^{(t,\infty)}$ stands for the degenerate elliptic curve with Kahler parameter $t$; but a large complex structure $μ$; i.e $| μ| \longrightarrow \infty $. We also give first results regarding A-model topological string amplitudes on $X^{(m,-m,0)}$. The 2D $U(1) $ gauged $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric sigm…
Based on work done by Bonechi, Cattaneo, Felder and Zabzine on Poisson sigma models, we formally show that Kontsevich's star product can be obtained from the twisted convolution algebra of the geometric quantization of a Lie 2-groupoid, one which integrates the Poisson structure. We show that there is an analogue of the Poisson sigma model which is valued in Lie 1-groupoids and which can often be defined non-perturbatively; it can be obtained by symplectic reduction using the quantization of the Lie 2-groupoid. We call these groupoid-valued sigma models and we argue that, when they exist, they…
We continue the analysis started in a recent paper of the large-N two-dimensional CP(N-1) sigma model, defined on a finite space interval L with Dirichlet (or Neumann) boundary conditions. Here we focus our attention on the problem of the renormalized energy density $\mathcal{E}(x,Λ,L)$ which is found to be a sum of two terms, a constant term coming from the sum over modes, and a term proportional to the mass gap. The approach to $\mathcal{E}(x,Λ,L)\to\tfrac{N}{4π}Λ^2$ at large $LΛ$ is shown, both analytically and numerically, to be exponential: no power corrections are present and in particul…
