A DFT algebroid is a special case of the metric (or Vaisman) algebroid, shown to be relevant in understanding the symmetries of double field theory. In particular, a DFT algebroid is a structure defined on a vector bundle over doubled spacetime equipped with the C-bracket of double field theory. In this paper we give the definition of a DFT algebroid as a curved $L_\infty$-algebra and show how implementation of the strong constraint of double field theory can be formulated as an $L_\infty$-algebra morphism. Our results provide a useful step towards coordinate invariant descriptions of double field theory and the construction of the corresponding sigma-model.
The Courant sigma model is a 3-dimensional topological sigma model of AKSZ type which has been used for the systematic description of closed strings in non-geometric flux backgrounds. In particular, the expression for the fluxes and their Bianchi identities coincide with the local form of the axioms of a Courant algebroid. On the other hand, the axioms of a Courant algebroid also coincide with the conditions for gauge invariance of the Courant sigma model. In this paper we embed this interplay between background fluxes of closed strings, gauge (or more precisely BRST) symmetries of the Courant…
This is my Ph.D. thesis defended at 31 May 2021, and it is devoted to the study of the geometry of curved Yang-Mills-Higgs gauge theory (CYMH GT), a theory introduced by Alexei Kotov and Thomas Strobl. This theory reformulates classical gauge theory, in particular, the Lie algebra (and its action) is generalized to a Lie algebroid $E$, equipped with a connection $\nabla$, and the field strength has an extra term $ζ$. In the classical situation $E$ is an action Lie algebroid, $\nabla$ is then the canonical flat connection with respect to such an $E$, and $ζ\equiv 0$. The shortened main results …
We reinterpret the generalised Lie derivative of M-theory $E_6$ generalised geometry as hamiltonian flow on a graded symplectic supermanifold. The hamiltonian acts as the nilpotent derivative of the tensor hierarchy of exceptional field theory. This construction is an M-theory analogue of the Courant algebroid and reveals the $L_\infty$-algebra underlying the tensor hierarchy. The AKSZ construction identifies that same hamiltonian with the lagrangian of a 7-dimensional generalisation of Chern-Simons theory that reduces to the M5-brane Wess-Zumino term on 5-brane boundaries. The exercise repeat…
There is the notion of action Lie algebroids, containing information about Lie algebras and their actions, which is why it is natural to generalise gauge theories to a formulation using Lie algebroids; these allow structure functions in general. This is for example done in the formulation of curved Yang-Mills-Higgs gauge theory, formulated by Alexei Kotov and Thomas Strobl. We will discuss how to formulate infinitesimal gauge transformations using Lie algebroids in such a way that these close as algebra. For this we are going to generalise infinitesimal gauge transformations of Yang-Mills-Higg…
We define a quasiclassical limit of the Lian-Zuckerman homotopy BV algebra (quasiclassical LZ algebra) on the subcomplex, corresponding to "light modes", i.e. the elements of zero conformal weight, of the semi-infinite (BRST) cohomology complex of the Virasoro algebra associated with vertex operator algebra (VOA) with a formal parameter. We also construct a certain deformation of the BRST differential parametrized by a constant two-component tensor, such that it leads to the deformation of the $A_{\infty}$-subalgebra of the quasiclassical LZ algebra. Altogether this gives a functor the categor…
Alexei Kotov and Thomas Strobl have introduced a covariantized formulation of Yang-Mills-Higgs gauge theories whose main motivation was to replace the Lie algebra with Lie algebroids. This allows the introduction of a possibly non-flat connection $\nabla$ on this bundle, after also introducing an additional 2-form $ζ$ in the field strength. We will study this theory in the simplified situation of Lie algebra bundles, hence, only massless gauge bosons, and we will provide a physical motivation of $ζ$. Moreover, we classify $\nabla$ using the gauge invariance, resulting into that $\nabla$ needs …
We give a self-contained survey of some approaches aimed at a global description of the geometry underlying double field theory. After reviewing the geometry of Courant algebroids and their incarnations in the AKSZ construction, we develop the theory of metric algebroids including their graded geometry. We use metric algebroids to give a global description of doubled geometry, incorporating the section constraint, as well as an AKSZ-type construction of topological doubled sigma-models. When these notions are combined with ingredients of para-Hermitian geometry, we demonstrate how they reprodu…
We construct L$_{\infty}$ algebras for general `initial data' given by a vector space equipped with an antisymmetric bracket not necessarily satisfying the Jacobi identity. We prove that any such bracket can be extended to a 2-term L$_{\infty}$ algebra on a graded vector space of twice the dimension, with the 3-bracket being related to the Jacobiator. While these L$_{\infty}$ algebras always exist, they generally do not realize a non-trivial symmetry in a field theory. In order to define L$_{\infty}$ algebras with genuine field theory realizations, we prove the significantly more general theor…
String theory still remains one of the promising candidates for a unification of the theory of gravity and quantum field theory. One of its essential parts is relativistic description of moving multi-dimensional objects called membranes (or p-branes) in a curved spacetime. On the classical field theory level, they are described by an action functional extremalising the volume of a manifold swept by a propagating membrane. This and related field theories are collectively called membrane sigma models. Differential geometry is an important mathematical tool in the study of string theory. It turns…
We investigate the deformation of D-brane world-volumes in curved backgrounds. We calculate the leading corrections to the boundary conformal field theory involving the background fields, and in particular we study the correlation functions of the resulting system. This allows us to obtain the world-volume deformation, identifying the open string metric and the noncommutative deformation parameter. The picture that unfolds is the following: when the gauge invariant combination ω= B + F is constant one obtains the standard Moyal deformation of the brane world-volume. Similarly, when dω= 0 one o…
We investigate the connection between curved spacetime and the emergence of string-instabilities, following the approach developed by Loustó and Sánchez for de Sitter and black hole spacetimes. We analyse the linearised equations determining the comoving physical (transverse) perturbations on circular strings embedded in Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström and de Sitter backgrounds. In all 3 cases we find that the "radial" perturbations grow infinitely for $r\rightarrow 0$ (ring-collapse), while the "angular" perturbations are bounded in this limit. For $r\rightarrow\infty$ we find that the pert…
Non-commutative gauge theories with a non-constant NC-parameter are investigated. As a novel approach, we propose that such theories should admit an underlying L$_\infty$ algebra, that governs not only the action of the symmetries but also the dynamics of the theory. Our approach is well motivated from string theory. We recall that such field theories arise in the context of branes in WZW models and briefly comment on its appearance for integrable deformations of AdS$_5$ sigma models. For the SU(2) WZW model, we show that the earlier proposed matrix valued gauge theory on the fuzzy 2-sphere ca…
Consider the differential forms $A^*(L)$ on a Lagrangian submanifold $L \subset X$. Following ideas of Fukaya-Oh-Ohta-Ono, we construct a family of cyclic unital curved $A_\infty$ structures on $A^*(L),$ parameterized by the cohomology of $X$ relative to $L.$ The family of $A_\infty$ structures satisfies properties analogous to the axioms of Gromov-Witten theory. Our construction is canonical up to $A_\infty$ pseudoisotopy. We work in the situation that moduli spaces are regular and boundary evaluation maps are submersions, and thus we do not use the theory of the virtual fundamental class.
Let $L\subset X$ be a not necessarily orientable relatively $Pin$ Lagrangian submanifold in a symplectic manifold $X$. We construct a family of cyclic unital curved $A_\infty$ structures on differential forms on $L$ with values in the local system of graded non-commutative rings given by the tensor algebra of the orientation local system of $L$. The family of $A_\infty$ structures is parameterized by the cohomology of $X$ relative to $L$ and satisfies properties analogous to the axioms of Gromov-Witten theory. On account of the non-orientability of $L,$ the evaluation maps of moduli spaces of …
We develop the theory of derived differential geometry in terms of bundles of curved $L_\infty[1]$-algebras, i.e. dg manifolds of positive amplitudes. We prove the category of derived manifolds is a category of fibrant objects. Therefore, we can make sense of "homotopy fibered product" and "derived intersection" of submaifolds in a smooth manifold in the homotopy category of derived manifolds. We construct a factorization of the diagonal using path spaces. First we construct an infinite-dimensional factorization using actual path spaces motivated by the AKSZ construction, then we cut down to f…
The responsibility of the electric field $E$ in the modification of the nature of the space is proved. We investigate the way the fundamental strings are related to supergravity background of D5-branes; i.e. once the endpoints of the D-strings are electrified the flat space becomes curved. We study the electrified relative and overall transverse perturbations of fuzzy funnel solutions of intersecting $(N,N_f)$-strings and D5-branes in flat and supergravity backgrounds respectively. As result the perturbations have a discontinuity which corresponds to a zero phase shift realizing Polchinski's o…
