We present integrable deformations of Yang-Baxter (YB) sigma models based on the Courant-Hilbert (CH) construction. To this end, we employ the four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory, in which the CH construction is shown in arXiv:2509.22080. As a result, the CH construction works in an intricate way alongside the YB deformations. Remarkably, the resulting deformed action can also be expressed as the sum of the master formula Lagrangian and the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. This result indicates the universality of the correction term.
The Courant sigma model is a 3-dimensional topological sigma model of AKSZ type which has been used for the systematic description of closed strings in non-geometric flux backgrounds. In particular, the expression for the fluxes and their Bianchi identities coincide with the local form of the axioms of a Courant algebroid. On the other hand, the axioms of a Courant algebroid also coincide with the conditions for gauge invariance of the Courant sigma model. In this paper we embed this interplay between background fluxes of closed strings, gauge (or more precisely BRST) symmetries of the Courant…
It is known that Yang-Baxter sigma models provide a systematic way to study integrable deformations of both principal chiral models and symmetric coset sigma models. In the original proposal and its subsequent development, the deformations have been characterized by classical $r$-matrices satisfying the modified classical Yang-Baxter equation (mCYBE). In this article, we propose the Yang-Baxter sigma models based on the classical Yang-Baxter equations (CYBE) rather than the mCYBE. This generalization enables us to utilize various kinds of solutions of the CYBE to classify integrable deformatio…
We present homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformations of the AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ supercoset sigma model as boundary conditions of a 4D Chern-Simons theory. We first generalize the procedure for the 2D principal chiral model developed by Delduc et al [arXiv:1909.13824] so as to reproduce the 2D symmetric coset sigma model, and specify boundary conditions governing homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformations. Then the conditions are applicable for the AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ supercoset sigma model case as well. In addition, homogeneous bi-Yang-Baxter deformation is also discussed.
We study the quantum properties at one-loop of the Yang-Baxter $σ$-models introduced by Klimč\'\ik. The proof of the one-loop renormalizability is given, the one-loop renormalization flow is investigated and the quantum equivalence is studied.
A multi-parameter integrable deformation of the principal chiral model is presented. The Yang-Baxter and bi-Yang-Baxter sigma-models, the principal chiral model plus a Wess-Zumino term and the TsT transformation of the principal chiral model are all recovered when the appropriate deformation parameters vanish. When the Lie group is SU(2), we show that this four-parameter integrable deformation of the SU(2) principal chiral model corresponds to the Lukyanov model.
The gravity dual of $β$-deformed ABJM theory can be obtained by a TsT transformation of $AdS_4\times\mathbb{CP}^3$. We present a supercoset construction of $\mathbb{CP}^3$ to obtain this gravity dual theory as a Yang-Baxter deformation. This is done by selecting a convenient combination of Cartan generators in order to get an Abelian $r$-matrix satisfying the classical Yang-Baxter equation. Our results provide another illustration of the relation between Abelian $r$-matrices and TsT transformations.
Integrable deformation of SU(2) sigma and lambda models are considered at the classical and quantum levels. These are the Yang-Baxter and XXZ-type anisotropic deformations. The XXZ type deformations are UV safe in one regime, while in another regime, like the Yang-Baxter deformations, they exhibit cyclic RG behaviour. The associated affine quantum group symmetry, realized classically at the Poisson bracket level, has q a complex phase in the UV safe regime and q real in the cyclic RG regime, where q is an RG invariant. Based on the symmetries and RG flow we propose exact factorizable S-matrice…
We propose that the Yang-Baxter deformation of the symmetric space sigma-model parameterized by an r-matrix solving the homogeneous (classical) Yang-Baxter equation is equivalent to the non-abelian dual of the undeformed model with respect to a subgroup determined by the structure of the r-matrix. We explicitly demonstrate this on numerous examples in the case of the AdS_5 sigma-model. The same should also be true for the full AdS_5 x S^5 supercoset model, providing an explanation for and generalizing several recent observations relating homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformations based on non-abelia…
Homogeneous Yang-Baxter (YB) deformation of AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ superstring is revisited. We calculate the YB sigma model action up to quadratic order in fermions and show that homogeneous YB deformations are equivalent to $β$-deformations of the AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ background when the classical $r$-matrices consist of bosonic generators. In order to make our discussion clearer, we discuss YB deformations in terms of the double-vielbein formalism of double field theory. We further provide an O(10,10)-invariant string action that reproduces the Green-Schwarz type II superstring action up to quadr…
Courant sigma-models encode the geometric and non-geometric fluxes of compactified closed string theory as generalized Wess-Zumino terms and exhibit their relation to Courant algebroids. In recent work, we proposed a doubled membrane sigma-model that establishes the corresponding connection to double field theory and its algebroid structure. The strategy is to consider a "large" Courant sigma-model over a doubled target spacetime and identify a suitable projection that leads to a sigma-model for doubled fields. In this note, we provide further details for this construction. Starting from the B…
Integrable sigma model with generalized $\mathcal{F}$ structure, Yang-Baxter sigma model with generalized complex structure and multi-Yang-Baxter sigma model
We prove the conjecture of Sfetsos, Siampos and Thompson that suitable analytic continuations of the Poisson-Lie T-duals of the bi-Yang-Baxter sigma models coincide with the recently introduced generalized lambda models. We then generalize this result by showing that the analytic continuation of a generic sigma model of "universal WZW-type" introduced by Tseytlin in 1993 is nothing but the Poisson-Lie T-dual of a generic Poisson-Lie symmetric sigma model introduced by Klimcik and Severa in 1995.
The bi-Yang-Baxter sigma-model is a certain two-parameter deformation of the principal chiral model on a real Lie group G for which the left and right G-symmetries of the latter are both replaced by Poisson-Lie symmetries. It was introduced by C. Klimcik who also recently showed it admits a Lax pair, thereby proving it is integrable at the Lagrangian level. By working in the Hamiltonian formalism and starting from an equivalent description of the model as a two-parameter deformation of the coset sigma-model on G x G / G_diag, we show that it also admits a Lax matrix whose Poisson bracket is of…
We define integrability preserving Yang-Baxter deformations of symmetric space sigma models with non-semi-simple symmetry group, in particular the flat space string, using only the essential structures of a symmetric space sigma model. For homogeneous deformations, the Lax connection is of the same form as the semi-simple case, although the R operator no longer satisfies a freestanding operator equation. For inhomogeneous deformations, the form of the Lax connection needs to be relaxed, by modifying the underlying algebra. We illustrate the construction by discussing nonabelian deformations of…
We study integrable deformations of two-dimensional non-linear sigma-models and present a new class of classical solutions to critical bi-Yang-Baxter models for general groups. For the simplest example, namely the SL(2,R) bi-Yang-Baxter model, we show that our solutions can be mapped to the known complex uniton solutions of the SU(2) bi-Yang-Baxter model. In general, our solutions are constructed from so-called Sl(2)-orbits that play a central role in the study of asymptotic Hodge theory. This provides further evidence for a close relation between integrable non-linear sigma-models and the mat…
The Yang-Baxter $σ$-model is an integrable deformation of the principal chiral model on a Lie group $G$. The deformation breaks the $G \times G$ symmetry to $U(1)^{\textrm{rank}(G)} \times G$. It is known that there exist non-local conserved charges which, together with the unbroken $U(1)^{\textrm{rank}(G)}$ local charges, form a Poisson algebra $\mathscr U_q(\mathfrak{g})$, which is the semiclassical limit of the quantum group $U_q(\mathfrak{g})$, with $\mathfrak{g}$ the Lie algebra of $G$. For a general Lie group $G$ with rank$(G)>1$, we extend the previous result by constructing local and n…
We investigate geometric aspects of double field theory (DFT) and its formulation as a doubled membrane sigma-model. Starting from the standard Courant algebroid over the phase space of an open membrane, we determine a splitting and a projection to a subbundle that sends the Courant algebroid operations to the corresponding operations in DFT. This describes precisely how the geometric structure of DFT lies in between two Courant algebroids and is reconciled with generalized geometry. We construct the membrane sigma-model that corresponds to DFT, and demonstrate how the standard T-duality orbit…
We show that in analogy to the introduction of Poisson structures twisted by a closed 3-form by Park and Klimcik-Strobl, the study of three dimensional sigma models with Wess-Zumino term leads in a likewise way to twisting of Courant algebroid structures by closed 4-forms H. The presentation is kept pedagogical and accessible to physicists as well as to mathematicians, explaining in detail in particular the interplay of field transformations in a sigma model with the type of geometrical structures induced on a target. In fact, as we also show, even if one does not know the mathematical concept…

Using the symmetry properties of two-dmensional sigma models, we introduce a notion of the Beltrami-Courant differential, so that there is a natural homotopy Gerstenhaber algebra related to it. We conjecture that the generalized Maurer-Cartan equation for the corresponding $L_{\infty}$ subalgebra gives solutions to the Einstein equations.
We study aspects of two-dimensional nonlinear sigma models with Wess-Zumino term corresponding to a nonclosed 3-form, which may arise upon dimensional reduction in the target space. Our goal in this paper is twofold. In a first part, we investigate the conditions for consistent gauging of sigma models in the presence of a nonclosed 3-form. In the Abelian case, we find that the target of the gauged theory has the structure of a contact Courant algebroid, twisted by a 3-form and two 2-forms. Gauge invariance constrains the theory to (small) Dirac structures of the contact Courant algebroid. In t…
We perform non-abelian T-duality for a generic Green-Schwarz string with respect to an isometry (super)group G, and we derive the transformation rules for the supergravity background fields. Specializing to G bosonic, or G fermionic but abelian, our results reproduce those available in the literature. We discuss also continuous deformations of the T-dual models, obtained by adding a closed B-field before the dualization. This idea can also be used to generate deformations of the original (un-dualized) model, when the 2-cocycle identified from the closed B is invertible. The latter construction…
We show how so-called Yang-Baxter (YB) deformations of sigma models, based on an R-matrix solving the classical Yang-Baxter equation (CYBE), give rise to marginal current-current deformations when applied to the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model. For non-compact groups these marginal deformations are more general than the ones usually considered, since they can involve a non-abelian current subalgebra. We classify such deformations of the AdS(3) x S(3) string.
We discuss a natural extension of the AKSZ construction to the case where the source is given by a supermanifold with a chosen integral form. We then focus on the special case with the target given by a Courant algebroid. In the simplest case this leads to the BV version of the super Chern-Simons theory, as developed by Grassi-Maccaferri and Cremonini-Grassi. In the case of exact Courant algebroids we derive the 2-dimensional $\mathcal N=(1,1)$ sigma model on the boundary, together with the Wess-Zumino term, paralleling the approach of Ševera in the bosonic case.
Yang-Baxter deformations of superstring sigma-models have recently inspired a supergravity solution generating technique. Using the open/closed string map and a Killing bi-vector as a deformation parameter, new solutions can be built, such that the (generalised) supergravity field equations were conjectured to always reduce to the classical Yang-Baxter equation (CYBE). In this work we provide a proof of this conjecture, using a systematic approach based on the so-called $β$-supergravity, which is a dynamical theory for the field $β^{mn}$ instead of the NSNS 2-form $b_{mn}$.
We consider a family of deformations of T^{1,1} in the Yang-Baxter sigma model approach. We first discuss a supercoset description of T^{1,1}, which makes manifest the full symmetry of the space and leads to the standard Sasaki-Einstein metric. Next, we consider three-parameter deformations of T^{1,1} by using classical r-matrices satisfying the classical Yang-Baxter equation (CYBE). The resulting metric and NS-NS two-form agree exactly with the ones obtained via TsT transformations, and contain the Lunin-Maldacena background as a special case. It is worth noting that for AdS_5 x T^{1,1}, clas…
We study Yang-Baxter sigma models with deformed 4D Minkowski spacetimes arising from classical $r$-matrices associated with $κ$-deformations of the Poincaré algebra. These classical $κ$-Poincaré $r$-matrices describe three kinds of deformations: 1) the standard deformation, 2) the tachyonic deformation, and 3) the light-cone deformation. For each deformation, the metric and two-form $B$-field are computed from the associated $r$-matrix. The first two deformations, related to the modified classical Yang-Baxter equation, lead to T-duals of dS$_4$ and AdS$_4$\,, respectively. The third deformatio…
We discuss homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformations of integrable sigma models in terms of twist operators. We show that the twist operators behave as the classical analogue of a Drinfeld twist, for all abelian and almost abelian deformations. We also use twist operators to rederive the well-known interpretation of TsT transformations -- equivalent to abelian deformations -- in terms of twisted boundary conditions. We discuss complications in extending this boundary condition picture to non-abelian deformations.
Yang-Baxter (YB) deformations of string sigma model provide deformed target spaces. We propose that homogeneous YB deformations always lead to a certain class of $β$-twisted backgrounds and represent the bosonic part of the supergravity fields in terms of the classical r-matrix associated with the YB deformation. We then show that various $β$-twisted backgrounds can be realized by considering generalized diffeomorphisms in the undeformed background. Our result extends the notable relation between the YB deformations and (non-commuting) TsT transformations. We also discuss more general deformat…

We prove that abelian Yang-Baxter deformations of superstring coset sigma models are equivalent to sequences of commuting TsT transformations, meaning T dualities and coordinate shifts. Our results extend also to fermionic deformations and fermionic T duality, and naturally lead to a TsT subgroup of the superduality group OSp(d_b,d_b|2d_f). In cases like AdS_5 x S^5, fermionic deformations necessarily lead to complex models. As an illustration of inequivalent deformations, we give all six abelian deformations of AdS_3. We comment on the possible dual field theory interpretation of these (super…
Non linear sigma models on Riemannian symmetric spaces constitute the most general class of classical non-linear sigma models which are known to be integrable. Using the current algebra structure of these models their canonical structure is analysed and it is shown that their non ultralocal fundamental Poisson bracket relation is governed by a field dependent non antisymmetric r-matrix obeying a dynamical Yang Baxter equation. Contribution presented at the XIX ICGTMP Salamanca June 92
We consider so-called Yang-Baxter deformations of bosonic string sigma-models, based on an $R$-matrix solving the (modified) classical Yang-Baxter equation. It is known that a unimodularity condition on $R$ is sufficient for Weyl invariance at least to two loops (first order in $α'$). Here we ask what the necessary condition is. We find that in cases where the matrix $(G+B)_{mn}$, constructed from the metric and $B$-field of the undeformed background, is degenerate the unimodularity condition arising at one loop can be replaced by weaker conditions. We further show that for non-unimodular defo…
Yang-Baxter string sigma-models provide a systematic way to deform coset geometries, such as $AdS_p \times S^p$, while retaining the $σ$-model integrability. It has been shown that the Yang-Baxter deformation in target space is simply an open-closed string map that can be defined for any geometry, not just coset spaces. Given a geometry with an isometry group and a bivector that is assumed to be a linear combination of antisymmetric products of Killing vectors, we show the equations of motion of (generalized) supergravity reduce to the Classical Yang-Baxter Equation associated with the isometr…
Yang-Baxter sigma models, proposed by Klimcik and Delduc-Magro-Vicedo, have been recognized as a powerful framework for studying integrable deformations of two-dimensional non-linear sigma models. In this short article, as an important generalization, we review a non-integrable sigma model in the Yang-Baxter sigma model approach based on [arXiv:1406.2249]. In particular, we discuss a family of deformations of the 5D Sasaki-Einstein manifold $T^{1,1}$, instead of the standard deformations of the $5$-sphere S$^5$. For this purpose, we first describe a novel construction of $T^{1,1}$ as a superco…
Lie algebra valued equations translating the integrability of a general two-dimensional Wess-Zumino-Witten model are given. We found simple solutions to these equations and identified three types of new integrable non-linear sigma models. One of them is a modified Yang-Baxter sigma model supplemented with a Wess-Zumino-Witten term.
We find new integrable boundary conditions, depending on a free parameter $g$, for the O(N) nonlinear $σ$ model, which are of nondiagonal type, that is, particles can change their ``flavor'' through scattering off the boundary. These boundary conditions are derived from a microscopic boundary lagrangian, which is used to establish their integrability, and exhibit integrable flows between diagonal boundary conditions investigated earlier. We solve the boundary Yang-Baxter equation, connect these solutions to the boundary conditions, and examine the corresponding integrable flows.
We construct integrability-preserving deformations of the integrable $σ$-model coupling together $N$ copies of the Principal Chiral Model. These deformed theories are obtained using the formalism of affine Gaudin models, by applying various combinations of Yang-Baxter and $λ$-deformations to the different copies of the undeformed model. We describe these models both in the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian formulation and give explicit expressions of their action and Lax pair. In particular, we recover through this construction various integrable $λ$-deformed models previously introduced in the liter…
A procedure is developed for constructing deformations of integrable sigma-models which are themselves classically integrable. When applied to the principal chiral model on any compact Lie group F, one recovers the Yang-Baxter sigma-model introduced a few years ago by C. Klimcik. In the case of the symmetric space sigma-model on F/G we obtain a new one-parameter family of integrable sigma-models. The actions of these models correspond to a deformation of the target space geometry and include a torsion term. An interesting feature of the construction is the q-deformation of the symmetry corresp…
We explore two distinct methods to introduce integrable defects in a family of integrable sigma-models known as Yang-Baxter models. The first method invokes a modified monodromy matrix encoding an integrable defect separating two integrable systems. As an example we construct integrable defects in the ultralocal version of the $S^2$ Yang-Baxter model or 2d Fateev sausage model. The second method is based on the so-called "frozen" Bäcklund transformations. Lifting the construction to the Drinfel'd double, we show how defect matrices can be constructed for inhomogeneous Yang-Baxter models. We pr…
Deformation theory refers to an apparatus in many parts of math and physics for going from an infinitesimal (= first order) deformation to a full deformation, either formal or convergent appropriately. If the algebra being deformed is that of observables, the result is deformation quantization, independent of any realization in terms of Hilbert space operators. There are very important but rare cases in which a formula for a full deformation is known. For physics, the most important is the Moyal-Weyl star product formula. In this paper, we concentrate on deformations of Courant algebroid struc…
We study AKSZ-type BV constructions for the topological A- and B-models within a double field theory formulation that incorporates backgrounds with geometric and non-geometric fluxes. We relate them to a Courant sigma-model, on an open membrane, corresponding to a generalized complex structure, which reduces to the A- or B-models on the boundary. We introduce S-duality at the level of the membrane sigma-model based on the generalized complex structure, which exchanges the related AKSZ field theories, and interpret it as topological S-duality of the A- and B-models. Our approach leads to new cl…
A common approach to the quantization of integrable models starts with the formal substitution of the Yang-Baxter Poisson algebra with its quantum version. However it is difficult to discern the presence of such an algebra for the so-called non-ultralocal models. The latter includes the class of non-linear sigma models which are most interesting from the point of view of applications. In this work, we investigate the emergence of the Yang-Baxter Poisson algebra in a non-ultralocal system which is related to integrable deformations of the Principal Chiral Field.
We consider γ-deformations of the AdS_5xS^5 superstring as Yang-Baxter sigma models with classical r-matrices satisfying the classical Yang-Baxter equation (CYBE). An essential point is that the classical r-matrices are composed of Cartan generators only and then generate abelian twists. We present examples of the r-matrices that lead to real γ-deformations of the AdS_5xS^5 superstring. Finally we discuss a possible classification of integrable deformations and the corresponding gravity solution in terms of solutions of CYBE. This classification may be called the gravity/CYBE correspondence.
We define a two-parameter family of integrable deformations of the principal chiral model on an arbitrary compact group. The Yang-Baxter sigma-model and the principal chiral model with a Wess-Zumino term both correspond to limits in which one of the two parameters vanishes.
We study Yang-Baxter deformations of the Nappi-Witten model with a prescription invented by Delduc, Magro and Vicedo. The deformations are specified by skew-symmetric classical $r$-matrices satisfying (modified) classical Yang-Baxter equations. We show that the sigma-model metric is invariant under arbitrary deformations (while the coefficient of $B$-field is changed) by utilizing the most general classical $r$-matrix. Furthermore, the coefficient of $B$-field is determined to be the original value from the requirement that the one-loop $β$-function should vanish. After all, the Nappi-Witten m…
Recently, for principal chiral models and symmetric coset sigma models, Hoare and Tseytlin proposed an interesting conjecture that the Yang-Baxter deformations with the homogeneous classical Yang-Baxter equation are equivalent to non-abelian T-dualities with topological terms. It is significant to examine this conjecture for non-symmetric (i.e., non-integrable) cases. Such an example is the $W_{2,4}\times T^{1,1}$ background. In this note, we study Yang-Baxter deformations of type IIB string theory defined on $W_{2,4}\times T^{1,1}$ and the associated T-dual models, and show that this conjectu…
In this paper we continue our classification of regular solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation using the method based on the spin chain boost operator developed in \cite{deLeeuw:2019zsi}. We provide details on how to find all non-difference form solutions and apply our method to spin chains with local Hilbert space of dimensions two, three and four. We classify all $16\times 16$ solutions which exhibit $\mathfrak{su}(2)\oplus \mathfrak{su}(2)$ symmetry, which include the one-dimensional Hubbard model and the $S$-matrix of the ${\rm AdS}_5 \times {\rm S}^5$ superstring sigma model. In all cases …
Based on the formulation of Yang-Baxter sigma models developed by Klimcik and Delduc-Magro-Vicedo, we explain that various deformations of type IIB superstring on AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ can be characterized by classical $r$-matrices satisfying the classical Yang-Baxter equation (CYBE). The relation may be referred to as `the gravity/CYBE correspondence.' We present non-trivial examples of the correspondence including Lunin-Maldacena backgrounds for $β$-deformations of the ${\cal N} = 4$ super Yang-Mills theory and the gravity duals for non-commutative gauge theories. We also discuss non-integrable…
The rules for Yang-Baxter (YB) deformation for a generic Green-Schwarz string sigma model has been obtained recently. We show that the deformation can be described through the action of a coordinate dependent $O(d,d)$ matrix on the target space fields both in the NS-NS and the RR sectors, generalizing previous results. This enables us to show that the YB deformed fields can be regarded as duality twisted fields in the context of Gauged Double Field Theory (GDFT). We compute the fluxes associated with the twist and show that the conditions on the R-matrix determining the YB deformation give ris…
