A theta surface in affine 3-space is the zero set of a Riemann theta function in genus 3. This includes surfaces arising from special plane quartics that are singular or reducible. Lie and Poincaré showed that theta surfaces are precisely the surfaces of double translation, i.e. obtained as the Minkowski sum of two space curves in two different ways. These curves are parametrized by abelian integrals, so they are usually not algebraic. This paper offers a new view on this classical topic through the lens of computation. We present practical tools for passing between quartic curves and their theta surfaces, and we develop the numerical algebraic geometry of degenerations of theta functions.
We compute the rational cohomology of the moduli space of non-singular non-hyperelliptic complex projective curves of genus 3 with an odd theta characteristic.
In the paper "The universal Kummer threefold", Q. Ren, S. Sam, G. Schrader, and B. Sturmfels (arXiv:1208.1229), conjectured equations for the universal Kummer variety in genus 3 case. Though, most of these equations are obtained from the Fourier-Jacobi expansion of relations among theta constants in genus 4, the more prominent one, Coble's quartic was obtained differently. The aim of the current paper is to show that Coble's quartic can be obtained as Fourier-Jacobi expansion of a relation among theta-constants in genus 4. We get also one more relation that could be in the ideal described in "…
We review and extend the known constructions relating Kummer threefolds, Gopel systems, theta constants and their derivatives, and the GIT quotient for 7 points in P^2 to obtain an explicit expression for the Coble quartic. The Coble quartic was recently determined completely by Q.Ran, S.Sam, G.Schrader, and B.Sturmfels, who computed it completely explicitly, as a polynomial with 372060 monomials of bidegree (28,4) in theta constants of the second order and theta functions of the second order, respectively. Our expression is in terms of products of theta constants with characteristics correspo…
Let M(2;0,3) be the moduli space of rank-2 stable vector bundles with Chern classes c_1=0, c_2=3 on the Fano threefold X, the double solid of index two. We prove that the vector bundles obtained by Serre's construction from smooth elliptic quintic curves on X form an open part of an irreducible component M' of M(2;0,3) and that the Abel-Jacobi map F:M'-->J(X) into the intermediate Jacobian J(X) defined by the second Chern class is generically finite of degree 84 onto a translate of the theta divisor. We also prove that the family of elliptic quintics on a general X is irreducible and of dimens…
Our fundamental result is the construction of new subvarieties in the varieties of power sums for the Scorza quartic of any general pairs of trigonal curves and non-effective theta characteristics. This is a generalization of Mukai's description of smooth prime Fano threefolds of genus twelve as the varieties of power sums for plane quartics. Among other applications, we give an affirmative answer to the conjecture of Dolgachev and Kanev on the existence of the Scorza quartic for any general pairs of curves and non-effective theta characteristics.
In the previous paper, we construct new subvarieties in the varieties of power sums for certain quartic hypersurfaces. In this paper, we show that these quartics coincide with the Scorza quartics of general pairs of trigonal curves and ineffective theta characteristics. Among other applications, we give an affirmative answer to the conjecture of Dolgachev and Kanev on the existence of the Scorza quartics for any general pairs of curves and ineffective theta characteristics. We also give descriptions of the moduli spaces of trigonal even spin curves. For curves of genus 4, we deepen this descri…
A log Calabi--Yau surface $(X,D)$ is given by a smooth projective surface $X$, together with an anti-canonical cycle of rational curves $D \subset X$. The homogeneous coordinate ring of the mirror to such a surface, or to the complement $X\setminus D$, is constructed in the work of Gross-Hacking-Keel, following previous work of Gross-Siebert, using wall structures, and it is generated by theta functions. In our work with Mark Gross we had provided a recipe to concretely compute these theta functions from a combinatorially constructed wall structure in arbitrary dimensions. In this paper, we fi…
In this paper we give a birational model for the theta divisor of the intermediate Jacobian of a generic cubic threefold $X$. We use the standard realization of $X$ as a conic bundle and a $4-$dimensional family of plane quartics which are totally tangent to the discriminant quintic curve of such a conic bundle structure. The additional data of an even theta characteristic on the curves in the family gives us a model for the theta divisor.
Effective reconstruction formulas of a curve from its theta hyperplanes are known classically in genus 2 (where the theta hyperplanes are Weierstrass points), and 3 (where, for a generic curve, the theta hyperplanes are bitangents to a plane quartic). However, for higher genera, no formula or algorithm are known. In this paper we give an explicit (and simple) algorithm for computing a generic genus 4 curve from it's theta hyperplanes.
We recall that a smooth ample surface $\mathcal{S}$ in a general $(1,2,2)$-polarized abelian threefold, which is the pullback of the Theta divisor of a smooth plane quartic curve $\mathcal{D}$, is a surface isogenous to the product $\mathcal{C} \times \mathcal{C}$, where $\mathcal{C}$ is a genus $9$ curve embedded in $\mathbb{P}^3$ as complete intersection of a smooth quadric and a smooth quartic. We show that the space of global holomorhic sections of the canonical bundle of this surface is generated by certain determinantal bihomogeneous polynomials of bidegree $(2,2)$ on $\mathbb{P}^3$, whi…
We show that a generic principally polarized abelian variety (ppav) is uniquely determined by its theta hyperplanes. These are the non-projectivized version of those studied by Caporaso and Sernesi (see math.AG/0204164), which in a sense are a generalization to ppavs of bitangents of plane quartics, and of hyperplanes tangent to a canonical curves of genus $g$ in $g-1$ points. More precisely, we show that, generically, the set of gradients of all odd theta functions at the point zero uniquely determines a ppav with level (4,8) structure. We also show that our map is an immersion of the moduli …
New historical aspects of the classification, by Cayley and Cremona, of ruled quartic surfaces and the relation to string models and plaster models are presented. In a `modern' treatment of the classification of ruled quartic surfaces the classical one is corrected and completed. A conceptual proof is presented of a result of Rohn concerning curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ of bi-degree $(2,2)$. The string models of Series XIII (of some ruled quartic surfaces) are based on Rohn's result.
Special types of quartic surfaces were much studied objects during the 1860s. Quartics were thus very much in the air when Sophus Lie and Felix Klein first met in Berlin in 1869. As this study shows, such surfaces played a major role in their subsequent work, much of which centered on linear and quadratic line complexes. This mutual interest led them to a number of new results on the quartic surfaces of Steiner, Plücker, and Kummer, as well as various types of ruled quartics studied earlier by Cremona. This paper, which draws on unpublished archival sources as well as published work from the p…
We give a defining equation of a complex smooth quartic surface containing 56 lines, and investigate its reductions to positive characteristics. This surface is isomorphic to the complex Fermat quartic surface, which contains only 48 lines. We give the isomorphism explicitly.
In this paper we first show that each Kummer quartic surface (a quartic surface $X$ with 16 singular points) is, in canonical coordinates, equal to its dual surface, and that the Gauss map induces a fixpoint free involution $γ$ on the minimal resolution $S$ of $X$. Then we study the corresponding Enriques surfaces $S/ γ$. We also describe in detail the remarkable properties of the most symmetric Kummer quartic, which we call the Cefalú quartic. We also investigate the Kummer quartic surfaces whose associated Abelian surface is isogenous to a product of elliptic curves through an isogeny with k…
We explain a classical construction of a del Pezzo surface of degree d = 4 or 5 as a smooth order two congruence of lines in 3-space whose focal surface is a quartic surface $X_{20-d}$ with 20-d ordinary double points. We also show that $X_{15}$ can be realized as a hyperplane section of the Castelnuovo-Richmond-Igusa quartic hypersurface. This leads to the proof of rationality of the moduli space of 15-nodal quartic surfaces. We discuss some other birational models of $X_{15}$: quartic symmetroids, 5-nodal quartic surfaces, 10-nodal sextic surfaces in $P^4$ and nonsingular surfaces of degree …
This is a continuation of [Og12], concerning automorphisms of smooth quartic K3 surfaces and birational automorphisms of ambient projective three spaces.
We prove the sharp bound of at most 64 lines on complex projective quartic surfaces (resp. affine quartics) that are not ruled by lines. We study configurations of lines on certain non-K3 surfaces of degree four and give various examples of singular quartics with many lines.
We show that the maximal number of (real) lines in a (real) nonsingular spatial quartic surface is 64 (respectively, 56). We also give a complete projective classification of all quartics containing more than 52 lines: all such quartics are projectively rigid. Any value not exceeding 52 can appear as the number of lines of an appropriate quartic.
We give a bound on the number of isolated, essential singularities of determinantal quartic surfaces in 3-space. We also provide examples of different configurations of real singularities on quartic surfaces with a definite Hermitian determinantal representation, and conjecture an extension of a theorem by Degtyarev and Itenberg.
A very general surface of degree at least four in projective space of dimension three contains no curves other than intersections with surfaces. We find a formula for the degree of the locus of surfaces of degree at least five which contain some elliptic quartic curve. We also compute the degree of the locus of quartic surfaces containing an elliptic quartic curve, a case not covered by that formula.
We show that the Hilbert scheme which parameterises bitangent lines to a general quartic surface is a counterexample to the infinitesimal Torelli claim and is a smooth regular surface with no rational curves and very ample canonical divisor.
We shall show the existence of 15 automorphic forms of weight 8 on the moduli space of marked Hessian quartic surfaces of cubic surfaces. These automorphic forms can be interpreted in terms of the coefficients of the Sylvester form of a general cubic surface.
In this note, we prove that there exist stable Ulrich bundles of every even rank on a smooth quartic surface $X \subset \mathbb{P}^3$ with Picard number 1.
Given a nonsingular quartic del Pezzo surface, a conjecture of Manin predicts the density of rational points on the open subset of the surface formed by deleting the lines. We prove that this prediction is of the correct order of magnitude for a particular surface.
In "Curves on Heisenberg invariant quartic surfaces in projective 3-space", Eklund showed that a general $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{4}$-invariant quartic K3 surface contains at least $320$ conics. In this paper we analyse the field of definition of those conics as well as their Monodromy group. As a result, we prove that the moduli space $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{4}$-invariant quartic K3 surface with a marked conic has $10$ irreducible components.
Over a field k of characteristic 3, we prove that there are no smooth quartic surfaces S in IP^3 with more than 112 lines. Moreover, the surface with 112 lines is projectively equivalent over k-bar to the Fermat quartic. As a key ingredient, we derive a characteristic free upper bound for the number of lines met by a quadric on a smooth quartic surface.
We give an explicit construction for the extension of a symmetric determinantal quartic K3 surface to a Fano 6-fold. Remarkably, the moduli of the 6-fold extension are in one-to-one correspondence with the moduli of the quartic surface. As a consequence, we determine a 16-parameter family of surfaces of general type with p_g=1 and K^2=2 as weighted complete intersections inside Fano 6-folds.
We provide explicit equations of some smooth complex quartic surfaces with many lines, including all 10 quartics with more than 52 lines. We study the relation between linear automorphisms and some configurations of lines such as twin lines and special lines. We answer a question by Oguiso on a determinantal presentation of the Fermat quartic surface.
For every p >= 5, we determine all Z_p-invariant nonsingular quartic surfaces in the three dimensional projective space over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. In some cases, we also determine their full projective automorphism groups.
We prove that a smooth surface, non of general type, in projective four-space, which lies on a quartic hypersurface with isolated singularities has degree at most 27 (in fact we prove a slightly more general result).
If C is a curve of genus 4 without vanishing theta-nulls then there exists a unique (irreducible) Heisenberg-invariant quartic Q_C in |2Θ| = P^{15} such that Sing Q_C contains the image of SU_C(2), the moduli space of rank 2 vector bundles with trivial determinant. Moreover, in each eigen-P^7 of the Heisenberg action on |2Θ|, Q_C restricts to the classical Coble quartic of the corresponding Prym-Kummer variety. We compare Q_C with the hypersurface G_3 in |2Θ| of divisors containing a translate of C in J(C), and show that in the eigen-P^7s G_3 recovers Beauville--Debarre's quadrisecant planes o…
In this paper, we give an extension of the classical story of the elliptic modular function to the Hilbert modular case for $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{5})$. We construct the period mapping for a family $\mathcal{F}=\{S(X,Y)\}$ of $K3 $ surfaces with $2$ complex parameters $X$ and $Y$. The inverse correspondence of the period mapping gives a system of generators of Hilbert modular functions for $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{5})$. Moreover, we show an explicit expression of this inverse correspondence by theta constants.
We study the birational geometry of some moduli spaces of abelian varieties with extra structure: in particular, with a symmetric theta structure and an odd theta characteristic. For a $(d_1,d_2)$-polarized abelian surface, we show how the parities of the $d_i$ influence the relation between canonical level structures and symmetric theta structures. For certain values of $d_1$ and $d_2$, a theta characteristic is needed in order to define Theta-null maps. We use these Theta-null maps and preceding work of other authors on the representations of the Heisenberg group to study the birational geom…
In this paper, we develop a new method to classify abelian automorphism groups of hypersurfaces. We use this method to classify (Theorem 4.2) abelian groups that admit a liftable action on a smooth cubic fourfold. A parallel result (Theorem 5.1) is obtained for quartic surfaces.
We describe a set of generators and defining relations for the group of birational automorphisms of a general 15-nodal quartic surface in the complex projective 3-dimensional space.
We study the geometry of some varieties of sums of powers related to the Klein quartic. This allows us to describe the birational geometry of certain moduli spaces of abelian surfaces. In particular we show that the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_2(1,7)^{-}_{sym}$ of $(1,7)$-polarized abelian surfaces with a symmetric theta structure and an odd theta characteristic is unirational by showing that it admits a dominant morphism from a unirational conic bundle.
We develop an algorithm detecting real representatives in equisingular strata of projective models of $K3$-surfaces. We apply this algorithm to spatial quartics and find two new examples of real strata without real representatives. As a by-product, we also give a new proof for the only previously known example of plane sextics.
We show that the K-moduli spaces of log Fano pairs $(\mathbb{P}^3, cS)$ where $S$ is a quartic surface interpolate between the GIT moduli space of quartic surfaces and the Baily-Borel compactification of moduli of quartic K3 surfaces as $c$ varies in the interval $(0,1)$. We completely describe the wall crossings of these K-moduli spaces. As the main application, we verify Laza-O'Grady's prediction on the Hassett-Keel-Looijenga program for quartic K3 surfaces. We also obtain the K-moduli compactification of quartic double solids, and classify all Gorenstein canonical Fano degenerations of $\ma…
We prove that there is a smooth quartic K3 surface automorphism that is not derived from the Cremona transformation of the ambient three-dimensional projective space. This gives a negative answer to a question of Professor Marat Giz.atullin
This paper is about the family of smooth quartic surfaces $X \subset \mathbb{P}^3$ that are invariant under the Heisenberg group $H_{2,2}$. For a very general such surface $X$, we show that the Picard number of $X$ is 16 and determine its Picard group. It turns out that the general Heisenberg invariant quartic contains 320 smooth conics and that in the very general case, this collection of conics generates the Picard group.
We study log Calabi--Yau pairs of the form $(\mathbb{P}^3,Δ)$, where $Δ$ is a quartic surface, and classify all such pairs of coregularity less than or equal to one, up to volume preserving equivalence. In particular, if $(\mathbb{P}^3,Δ)$ is a maximal log Calabi--Yau pair then we show that it has a toric model.
