Let $G$ denote a compact monothetic group, and let $$ρ(x) = α_k x^k + \ldots + α_1 x + α_0,$$ where $α_0, \ldots , α_k$ are elements of $G$ one of which is a generator of $G$. Let $(p_n)_{n\geq 1}$ denote the sequence of rational prime numbers. Suppose $f \in L^{p}(G)$ for $p> 1$. It is known that if $$A_{N}f(x) := {1 \over N} \sum_{n=1}^{N} f(x + ρ(p_n)) \qquad (N=1,2, \ldots ),$$ then the limit $\lim _{n\to \infty} A_Nf(x)$ exists for almost all $x$ with respect Haar measure. We show that if $G$ is connected then the limit is $\int_{G} f dλ$. In the case where $G$ is the $a$-adic integers, which is a totally disconnected group, the limit is described in terms of Fourier multipliers which are generalizations of Gauss sums.
A celebrated result by Bourgain and Wierdl states that ergodic averages along primes converge almost everywhere for $L^p$-functions, $p>1$, with a polynomial version by Wierdl and Nair. Using an anti-correlation result for the von Mangoldt function due to Green and Tao we observe everywhere convergence of such averages for nilsystems and continuous functions.
We establish mean convergence for multiple ergodic averages with iterates given by distinct fractional powers of primes and related multiple recurrence results. A consequence of our main result is that every set of integers with positive upper density contains patterns of the form $\{m,m+[p_n^a], m+[p_n^b]\}$, where $a,b$ are positive non-integers and $p_n$ denotes the $n$-th prime, a property that fails if $a$ or $b$ is a natural number. Our approach is based on a recent criterion for joint ergodicity of collections of sequences and the bulk of the proof is devoted to obtaining good seminorm …
We show that $ { ω}(n)$ and $ { Ω}(n)$, the number of distinct prime factors of $n$ and the number of distinct prime factors of $n$ counted according to multiplicity are good weighting functions for the pointwise ergodic theorem in $L^{1}$. That is, if $g$ denotes one of these functions and $S_{g,K}=\sum_{n\leq K}g(n)$ then for every ergodic dynamical system $(X, { { \cal A } },μ, { τ})$ and every $f\in L^{1}(X)$ $$\lim_{K\to { \infty }} \frac{1}{S_{g,K}}\sum_{n=1}^{K} g(n)f( { τ}^{n}x)=\int_{X}fdμ\text{ for $μ$ a.e. }x\in X. $$ This answers a question raised by C. Cuny and M. Weber who showed…
Let $(X,B_X,μ,T)$ be a measure-preserving probability system with $T$ is invertible. Suppose that $A\in B_X$ with $μ(A)>0$ and $ε>0$. For any $m\geq 1$, there exist infinitely many primes $p_0,p_1,\ldots,p_m$ with $p_0<\cdots<p_m$ such that $$ μ(A\cap T^{-(p_i-1)}A)\geq μ(A)^2-ε$$ for each $0\leq i\leq m$ and $$ p_m-p_0<C_m, $$ where $C_m>0$ is a constant only depending on $m$, $A$ and $ε$.
Given an ergodic dynamical system $(X, \mathcal{B}, μ, T)$, we prove that for each function $f$ belonging to the Orlicz space $L(\log L)^2(\log \log L)(X, μ)$, the ergodic averages \[ \frac{1}{π(N)} \sum_{p \in \mathbb{P}_N} f\big(T^p x\big), \] converge for $μ$-almost all $x \in X$, where $\mathbb{P}_N$ is the set of prime numbers not larger that $N$ and $π(N) = \# \mathbb{P}_N$.
We establish a prime number theorem for all uniquely ergodic, analytic skew products on the $2$-torus $\mathbb{T}^2$. More precisely, for every irrational $α$ and every $1$-periodic real analytic $g:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ of zero mean, let $T_{α,g} : \mathbb{T}^2 \rightarrow \mathbb{T}^2$ be defined by $(x,y) \mapsto (x+α,y+g(x))$. We prove that if $T_{α, g}$ is uniquely ergodic then, for every $(x,y) \in \mathbb{T}^2$, the sequence $\{T_{α, g}^p(x,y)\}$ is equidistributed on $\mathbb{T}^2$ as $p$ traverses prime numbers. This is the first example of a class of natural, non-algebraic and smo…
We prove $q$-variation estimates, $q>2$, on $\ell^{p}$ spaces for averages along primes (with $1<p<\infty$) and polynomials (with $\big| \frac1p - \frac12 \big| < \frac{1}{2(d+1)}$, where $d$ is the degree of the polynomial). This improves the pointwise ergodic theorems for these averages in the corresponding ranges of $L^{p}$ spaces.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the sequence $\{Ω(n) \}_{ n \in \mathbb{N} }$ from a dynamical point of view, where $Ω(n)$ denotes the number of prime factors of $n$ counted with multiplicity. First, we show that for any non-atomic ergodic system $(X, \mathcal{B}, μ, T)$, the operators $T^{Ω(n)}: \mathcal{B} \to L^1(μ)$ have the strong sweeping-out property. In particular, this implies that the Pointwise Ergodic Theorem does not hold along $Ω(n)$. Second, we show that the behaviors of $Ω(n)$ captured by the Prime Number Theorem and Erdős-Kac Theorem are disjoint, in the sense that their dy…
Let $H$ be a Hardy field (a field consisting of germs of real-valued functions at infinity that is closed under differentiation) and let $f \in H$ be a subpolynomial function. Let $\mathcal{P} = \{2, 3, 5, 7, \dots \}$ be the (naturally ordered) set of primes. We show that $(f(n))_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ is uniformly distributed mod 1 if and only if $(f(p))_{p \in \mathcal{P}}$ is uniformly distributed mod 1. This result is then utilized to derive various ergodic and combinatorial statements which significantly generalize the results obtained in [BKMST].
We establish results with an arithmetic flavor that generalize the polynomial multidimensional Szemeredi theorem and related multiple recurrence and convergence results in ergodic theory. For instance, we show that in all these statements we can restrict the implicit parameter to those integers that have an even number of distinct prime factors, or satisfy any other congruence condition. In order to obtain these refinements we study the limiting behavior of some closely related multiple ergodic averages with weights given by appropriately chosen multiplicative functions. These averages are the…
Following an approach presented by N. Frantzikinakis, B. Host and B. Kra, we show that the parameters in the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem for closest integer polynomials have non-empty intersection with the set of shifted primes $\mathbb{P}-1$ (or similarly of $\mathbb{P}+1$). Using the Furstenberg Correspondence Principle, we show this result by recasting it as a polynomial multiple recurrence result in measure ergodic theory. Furthermore, we obtain integer part polynomial convergence results by the same method, which is a transference principle that enables one to deduce results for $\…
Let G:=SO(n,1)^\circ and Γbe a geometrically finite Zariski dense subgroup with critical exponent delta bigger than (n-1)/2. Under a spectral gap hypothesis on L^2(Γ\ G), which is always satisfied for delta>(n-1)/2 for n=2,3 and for delta>n-2 for n>= 4, we obtain an {\it effective} archimedean counting result for a discrete orbit of Γin a homogeneous space H\G, where H is the trivial group, an affine symmetric subgroup or a horospherical subgroup. More precisely, we show that for any effectively well-rounded family {B_T} of compact subsets in H\G, there exists η>0 such that #[e]\G\cap B_T=M(B_…
We prove a general form of the regularity theorem for uniformity norms, and deduce an inverse theorem for these norms which holds for a class of compact nilspaces including all compact abelian groups, and also nilmanifolds; in particular we thus obtain the first non-abelian versions of such theorems. We derive these results from a general structure theorem for cubic couplings, thereby unifying these results with the Host-Kra Ergodic Structure Theorem. A unification of this kind had been propounded as a conceptual prospect by Host and Kra. Our work also provides new results on nilspaces. In par…
