This paper is devoted to the construction of finite elements on grids that consist of general quadrilaterals not limited in parallelograms. Two finite elements defined as Ciarlet's triple are established for the $H^1$ and $H(\rm rot)$ elliptic problems, respectively. An $\mathcal{O}(h)$ order convergence rate in energy norm for both of them and an $\mathcal{O}(h^2)$ order convergence in $L^2$ norm for the $H^1$ scheme are proved under the asymptotic-parallelogram assumption on the grids. Further, the two finite element spaces on general quadrilateral grids, together with the space of piecewise constant functions, formulate a discretized de Rham complex.
The finite element spaces consist of piecewise polynomial functions, and, thus, are nonconforming on general quadrilateral grids. Indeed, a rigorous analysis is given in this paper that it is impossible to construct a practically useful finite element defined as Ciarlet's triple that can formulate a finite element space which consists of continuous piecewise polynomial functions on a grid that may include arbitrary quadrilaterals.

Given a sequence of finite element spaces which form a de Rham sequence, we will construct a dual representation of these spaces with associated differential operators which connect these spaces such that they also form a de Rham sequence. The matrix which converts primal representations to dual representations -- the Hodge matrix -- is the mass or Gram matrix. It will be shown that a bilinear form of a primal and a dual representation is equal to the vector inner product of the expansion coefficients (degrees of freedom) of both representations. This leads to very sparse system matrices, even…
We develop a multipoint stress mixed finite element method for linear elasticity with weak stress symmetry on quadrilateral grids, which can be reduced to a symmetric and positive definite cell centered system. The method is developed on simplicial grids in [4]. The method utilizes the lowest order Brezzi-Douglas-Marini finite element spaces for the stress and the trapezoidal quadrature rule in order to localize the interaction of degrees of freedom, which allows for local stress elimination around each vertex. We develop two variants of the method. The first uses a piecewise constant rotation…
A mixed finite element method for nearly incompressible elasticity and Stokes equations using primal and dual meshes with quadrilateral and hexahedral grids
The purpose of this paper is to discuss a generalization of the bubble transform to differential forms. The bubble transform was discussed in a previous paper by the authors for scalar valued functions, or zero-forms, and represents a new tool for the understanding of finite element spaces of arbitrary polynomial degree. The present paper contains a similar study for differential forms. From a simplicial mesh of the domain, we build a map which decomposes piecewise smooth $k$-forms into a sum of local bubbles supported on appropriate macroelements. The key properties of the decomposition are t…
In this paper we introduce a $C^1$ spline space over mixed meshes composed of triangles and quadrilaterals, suitable for FEM-based or isogeometric analysis. In this context, a mesh is considered to be a partition of a planar polygonal domain into triangles and/or quadrilaterals. The proposed space combines the Argyris triangle, cf. (Argyris, Fried, Scharpf; 1968), with the $C^1$ quadrilateral element introduced in (Brenner, Sung; 2005) and (Kapl, Sangalli, Takacs; 2019) for polynomial degrees $p\geq 5$. The space is assumed to be $C^2$ at all vertices and $C^1$ across edges, and the splines ar…
In this note we will explore some applications of the recently constructed piecewise affine, $H^1$-conforming element that fits in a discrete de Rham complex [Christiansen and Hu, Generalized finite element systems for smooth differential forms and Stokes' problem. Numer. Math. 140 (2018)]. In particular we show how the element leads to locking free methods for incompressible elasticity and viscosity robust methods for the Brinkman model.
A new high order accurate staggered semi-implicit space-time discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is presented for the simulation of viscous incompressible flows on unstructured triangular grids in two space dimensions. The staggered DG scheme defines the discrete pressure on the primal triangular mesh, while the discrete velocity is defined on a staggered edge-based dual quadrilateral mesh. In this paper, a new pair of equal-order-interpolation velocity-pressure finite elements is proposed. On the primary triangular mesh (the pressure elements) the basis functions are piecewise polynomials of d…
We present a mixed finite element method for a five-field formulation of the Biot system of poroelasticity that reduces to a cell-centered pressure-displacement system on simplicial and quadrilateral grids. A mixed stress-displacement-rotation formulation for elasticity with weak stress symmetry is coupled with a mixed velocity-pressure Darcy formulation. The spatial discretization is based on combining the multipoint stress mixed finite element (MSMFE) method for elasticity and the multipoint flux mixed finite element (MFMFE) method for Darcy flow. It uses the lowest order Brezzi-Douglas-Mari…
The Galerkin difference (GD) basis is a set of continuous, piecewise polynomials defined using a finite difference like grid of degrees of freedom. The one dimensional GD basis functions are naturally extended to multiple dimensions using the tensor product constructions to quadrilateral elements for discretizing partial differential equations. Here we propose two approaches to handling complex geometries using the GD basis within a discontinuous Galerkin finite element setting: (1) using non-conforming, curvilinear GD elements and (2) coupling affine GD elements with curvilinear simplicial el…
