In this paper, we construct new finite element methods for the approximation of the equations of linear elasticity in three space dimensions that produce direct approximations to both stresses and displacements. The methods are based on a modified form of the Hellinger--Reissner variational principle that only weakly imposes the symmetry condition on the stresses. Although this approach has been previously used by a number of authors, a key new ingredient here is a constructive derivation of the elasticity complex starting from the de Rham complex. By mimicking this construction in the discrete case, we derive new mixed finite elements for elasticity in a systematic manner from known discretizations of the de Rham complex. These elements appear to be simpler than the ones previously derived. For example, we construct stable discretizations which use only piecewise linear elements to approximate the stress field and piecewise constant functions to approximate the displacement field.
We consider and discretize a mixed formulation for linear elasticity with weakly imposed symmetry in two and three dimensions. Whereas existing methods mainly deal with simplicial or polygonal meshes, we take advantage of isogeometric analysis (IGA) and consequently allow for shapes with curved boundaries. To introduce the discrete spaces we use isogeometric discrete differential forms defined by proper B-spline spaces. For the proposed schemes a proof of well-posedness and an error estimate are given. Further we discuss our ansatz by means of different numerical examples.
We introduce a pure--stress formulation of the elasticity eigenvalue problem with mixed boundary conditions. We propose an H(div)-based discontinuous Galerkin method that imposes strongly the symmetry of the stress for the discretization of the eigenproblem. Under appropriate assumptions on the mesh and the degree of polynomial approximation, we demonstrate the spectral correctness of the discrete scheme and derive optimal rates of convergence for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Finally, we provide numerical examples in two and three dimensions.
We consider mixed finite element methods for linear elasticity where the symmetry of the stress tensor is weakly enforced. Both an a priori and a posteriori error analysis are given for several known families of methods that are uniformly valid in the incompressible limit. A posteriori estimates are derived for both the compressible and incompressible cases. The results are verified by numerical examples.
A stress equilibration procedure for linear elasticity is proposed and analyzed in this paper with emphasis on the behavior for (nearly) incompressible materials. Based on the displacement-pressure approximation computed with a stable finite element pair, it constructs an $H (\text{div})$-conforming, weakly symmetric stress reconstruction. Our focus is on the Taylor-Hood combination of continuous finite element spaces of polynomial degrees $k+1$ and $k$ for the displacement and the pressure, respectively. Our construction leads then to reconstructed stresses by Raviart-Thomas elements of degre…
In this article we consider the linear elasticity problem in an axisymmetric three dimensional domain, with data which are axisymmetric and have zero angular component. The weak formulation of the the three dimensional problem reduces to a two dimensional problem on the meridian domain, involving weighted integrals. The problem is formulated in a mixed method framework with both the stress and displacement treated as unknowns. The symmetry condition for the stress tensor is weakly imposed. Well posedness of the continuous weak formulation and its discretization are shown. Two approximation spa…
We analyze a semi-explicit time discretization scheme of first order for poro\-elasticity with nonlinear permeability provided that the elasticity model and the flow equation are only weakly coupled. The approach leads to a decoupling of the equations and, at the same time, linearizes the nonlinearity without the need of further inner iteration steps. Hence, the computational speed-up is twofold without a loss in the convergence rate. We prove optimal first-order error estimates by considering a related delay system and investigate the method numerically for different examples with various typ…
We develop a Nitsche finite element method for a model of Euler--Bernoulli beams with axial stiffness embedded in a two--dimensional elastic bulk domain. The beams have their own displacement fields, and the elastic subdomains created by the beam network are triangulated independently and are coupled to the beams weakly by use of Nitsche's method in the framework of hybridization.

In this article we suggest two discretization methods based on isogeometric analysis (IGA) for planar linear elasticity. On the one hand, we apply the well-known ansatz of weakly imposed symmetry for the stress tensor and obtain a well-posed mixed formulation. Such modified mixed problems have been already studied by different authors. But we concentrate on the exploitation of IGA results to handle also curved boundary geometries. On the other hand, we consider the more complicated situation of strong symmetry, i.e. we discretize the mixed weak form determined by the so-called Hellinger-Reissn…

We develop a mixed finite element method for the coupled problem arising in the interaction between a free fluid governed by the Stokes equations and flow in deformable porous medium modeled by the Biot system of poroelasticity. Mass conservation, balance of stress, and the Beavers--Joseph--Saffman condition are imposed on the interface. We consider a fully mixed Biot formulation based on a weakly symmetric stress-displacement-rotation elasticity system and Darcy velocity-pressure flow formulation. A velocity-pressure formulation is used for the Stokes equations. The interface conditions are i…

We develop a new multipoint stress mixed finite element method for linear elasticity with weakly enforced stress symmetry on simplicial grids. Motivated by the multipoint flux mixed finite element method for Darcy flow, the method utilizes the lowest order Brezzi-Douglas-Marini finite element spaces for the stress and the vertex quadrature rule in order to localize the interaction of degrees of freedom. This allows for local stress elimination around each vertex. We develop two variants of the method. The first uses a piecewise constant rotation and results in a cell-centered system for displa…
Least-Squares Finite Element Methods with Weakly Imposed Boundary Conditions: Norm and Error Equivalences, Over-Penalization, and Fully Discontinuous Discretizations
In the present work, we consider weakly-singular integral equations arising from linear second-order strongly-elliptic PDE systems with constant coefficients, including, e.g., linear elasticity. We introduce a general framework for optimal convergence of adaptive Galerkin BEM. We identify certain abstract properties for the underlying meshes, the corresponding mesh-refinement strategy, and the ansatz spaces that guarantee convergence at optimal algebraic rate of an adaptive algorithm driven by the weighted-residual error. These properties are satisfied, e.g., for discontinuous piecewise polyno…
We investigate the possibility to determine the divergence-free displacement $\mathbf{u}$ \emph{independently} from the pressure reaction $p$ for a class of boundary value problems in incompressible linear elasticity. If not possible, we investigate if it is possible to determine it \emph{pressure robustly}, i.e. pollution free from the pressure reaction. For convex domains there is but one variational boundary value problem among the investigated that allows the independent determination. It is the one with essential no-penetration conditions combined with homogeneous tangential traction cond…
In this work we introduce a dG framework for nonlinear elasticity based on a Bassi-Rebay (BR2) formulation. The framework encompasses compressible and incompressible hyperelastic materials and is capable of dealing with large deformations. In order to achieve stability, we combine higher-order lifting operators for the BR2 stabilization term with an adaptive stabilization strategy which relies on the BR2 Laplace operator stabilization and a penalty parameter based on the spectrum of the fourth-order elasticity tensor. Dirichlet boundary conditions for the displacement can be imposed by means o…
The first super-convergent hybridisable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for linear elastic problems capable of using the same degree of approximation for both the primal and mixed variables is presented. The key feature of the method is the strong imposition of the symmetry of the stress tensor by means of the well-known and extensively used Voigt notation, circumventing the use of complex mathematical concepts to enforce the symmetry of the stress tensor either weakly or strongly. A novel procedure to construct element-by-element a super-convergent post-processed displacement is proposed.…
