We develop a mixed finite element method for the coupled problem arising in the interaction between a free fluid governed by the Stokes equations and flow in deformable porous medium modeled by the Biot system of poroelasticity. Mass conservation, balance of stress, and the Beavers--Joseph--Saffman condition are imposed on the interface. We consider a fully mixed Biot formulation based on a weakly symmetric stress-displacement-rotation elasticity system and Darcy velocity-pressure flow formulation. A velocity-pressure formulation is used for the Stokes equations. The interface conditions are incorporated through the introduction of the traces of the structure velocity and the Darcy pressure as Lagrange multipliers. Existence and uniqueness of a solution are established for the continuous weak formulation. Stability and error estimates are derived for the semi-discrete continuous-in-time mixed finite element approximation. Numerical experiments are presented to verify the theoretical results and illustrate the robustness of the method with respect to the physical parameters.
We develop the \textit{a posteriori} error analysis of three mixed finite element formulations for rotation-based equations in elasticity, poroelasticity, and interfacial elasticity-poroelasticity. The discretisations use $H^1$-conforming finite elements of degree $k+1$ for displacement and fluid pressure, and discontinuous piecewise polynomials of degree $k$ for rotation vector, total pressure, and elastic pressure. Residual-based estimators are constructed, and upper and lower bounds (up to data oscillations) for all global estimators are rigorously derived. The methods are all robust with r…
We analyze a semi-explicit time discretization scheme of first order for poro\-elasticity with nonlinear permeability provided that the elasticity model and the flow equation are only weakly coupled. The approach leads to a decoupling of the equations and, at the same time, linearizes the nonlinearity without the need of further inner iteration steps. Hence, the computational speed-up is twofold without a loss in the convergence rate. We prove optimal first-order error estimates by considering a related delay system and investigate the method numerically for different examples with various typ…
In this paper, we apply the constraint energy minimizing generalized multiscale finite element method (CEM-GMsFEM) to first solving a nonlinear poroelasticity problem. The arising system consists of a nonlinear pressure equation and a nonlinear stress equation in strain-limiting setting, where strains keep bounded while stresses can grow arbitrarily large. After time discretization of the system, to tackle the nonlinearity, we linearize the resulting equations by Picard iteration. To handle the linearized equations, we employ the CEM-GMsFEM and obtain appropriate offline multiscale basis funct…
We give a unified introduction to the MPFA- and MPSA-type finite volume methods for Darcy flow and poro-elasticity, applicable to general polyhedral grids. This leads to a more systematic perspective of these methods than has been exposed in previous texts, and we therefore refer to this discretization family as the MPxA methods. We apply this MPxA framework to also define a consistent finite-volume discretization of thermo-poro-elasticity. In order to make the exposition accessible to a wide audience, we avoid much of the technical notation which is used in the research literature, and compen…
This work proposes a mixed finite element method for the Biot poroelasticity equations that employs the lowest-order Raviart-Thomas finite element space for the solid displacement and piecewise constants for the fluid pressure. The method is based on the formulation of linearized elasticity as a weighted vector Laplace problem. By introducing the solid rotation and fluid flux as auxiliary variables, we form a four-field formulation of the Biot system, which is discretized using conforming mixed finite element spaces. The auxiliary variables are subsequently removed from the system in a local h…
We present a mixed finite element method for a five-field formulation of the Biot system of poroelasticity that reduces to a cell-centered pressure-displacement system on simplicial and quadrilateral grids. A mixed stress-displacement-rotation formulation for elasticity with weak stress symmetry is coupled with a mixed velocity-pressure Darcy formulation. The spatial discretization is based on combining the multipoint stress mixed finite element (MSMFE) method for elasticity and the multipoint flux mixed finite element (MFMFE) method for Darcy flow. It uses the lowest order Brezzi-Douglas-Mari…
In this paper, we propose a multiphysics mixed finite element method with Nitsche's technique for Stokes-poroelasticity problem. Firstly, we present a multiphysics reformulation of poroelasticity part of the original problem by introducing two pseudo-pressures to reveal the underlying deformation and diffusion multi physical processes in the Stokes-poroelasticity problem. Then, we prove the existence and uniqueness of weak solution of the reformulated and original problem. And we use Nitsche's technique to approximate the coupling condition at the interface to propose a loosely-coupled time-st…
We develop non-overlapping domain decomposition methods for the Biot system of poroelasticity in a mixed form. The solid deformation is modeled with a mixed three-field formulation with weak stress symmetry. The fluid flow is modeled with a mixed Darcy formulation. We introduce displacement and pressure Lagrange multipliers on the subdomain interfaces to impose weakly continuity of normal stress and normal velocity, respectively. The global problem is reduced to an interface problem for the Lagrange multipliers, which is solved by a Krylov space iterative method. We study both monolithic and s…
In this work, we consider a hybrid mixed finite element method for Biot's model. The hybrid P1-RT0-P0 discretization of the displacement-pressure-Darcy's velocity system of Biot's model presented in \cite{C. Niu} is not uniformly stable with respect to the physical parameters, resulting in some issues in numerical simulations. To alleviate such problems, following \cite{V. Girault}, we stabilize the hybrid scheme with face bubble functions and show the well-posedness with respect to physical and discretization parameters, which provide optimal error estimates of the stabilized method. We intro…

Accurate numerical simulations of interaction between fluid and solid play an important role in applications. The task is challenging in practical scenarios as the media are usually highly heterogeneous with very large contrast. To overcome this computational challenge, various multiscale methods are developed. In this paper, we consider a class of linear poroelasticity problems in high contrast heterogeneous porous media, and develop a mixed generalized multiscale finite element method (GMsFEM) to obtain a fast computational method. Our aim is to develop a multiscale method that is robust wit…
In this paper we present and analyze a fully-mixed formulation for the coupled problem arising in the interaction between a free fluid and a flow in a poroelastic medium. The flows are governed by the Stokes and Biot equations, respectively, and the transmission conditions are given by mass conservation, balance of stresses, and the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman law. We apply dual-mixed formulations in both domains, where the symmetry of the Stokes and poroelastic stress tensors is imposed by setting the vorticity and structure rotation tensors as auxiliary unknowns. In turn, since the transmission c…
In this paper, we focus on investigating the influence on hydrodynamic factors of different coupled computational models describing the interaction between an incompressible fluid and two symmetric elastic or poroelastic structures. The fluid region is governed by time dependent Navier-Stokes equations; while for the structure region, we employ two different types of fully dynamic models to study the effects of elasticity and poroelasticity. It is known that blood flow shows a non- Newtonian property in small vessels and in situations of complex geometries. On one hand, we perform numerical ex…
We analyse a PDE system modelling poromechanical processes (formulated in mixed form using the solid deformation, fluid pressure, and total pressure) interacting with diffusing and reacting solutes in the medium. We investigate the well-posedness of the nonlinear set of equations using fixed-point theory, Fredholm's alternative, a priori estimates, and compactness arguments. We also propose a mixed finite element method and rigorously demonstrate the stability of the scheme. Error estimates are derived in suitable norms, and numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate the mechano-chemica…
We consider mixed finite element methods for linear elasticity where the symmetry of the stress tensor is weakly enforced. Both an a priori and a posteriori error analysis are given for several known families of methods that are uniformly valid in the incompressible limit. A posteriori estimates are derived for both the compressible and incompressible cases. The results are verified by numerical examples.
In this paper, we develop a discretization for the non-linear coupled model of classical Darcy-Forchheimer flow in deformable porous media, an extension of the quasi-static Biot equations. The continuous model exhibits a generalized gradient flow structure, identifying the dissipative character of the physical system. The considered mixed finite element discretization is compatible with this structure, which gives access to a simple proof for the existence, uniqueness, and stability of discrete approximations. Moreover, still within the framework, the discretization allows for the development …
In this paper we analyze a posteriori error estimates for a mixed formulation of the linear elasticity eigenvalue problem. A posteriori estimators for the nearly and perfectly compressible elasticity spectral problems are proposed. With a post-process argument, we are able to prove reliability and efficiency for the proposed estimators. The numerical method is based in Raviart-Thomas elements to approximate the pseudostress and piecewise polynomials for the displacement. We illustrate our results with numerical tests.
In this paper we study the approximation of eigenvalues arising from the mixed Hellinger--Reissner elasticity problem by using the simple finite element using partial relaxation of $C^0$ vertex continuity of stresses introduced recently by Jun Hu and Rui Ma. We prove that the method converge when a residual type error estimator is considered and that the estimator decays optimally with respect to the number of degrees of freedom.
The purpose of this work is to study mortar methods for linear elasticity using standard low order finite element spaces. Based on residual stabilization, we introduce a stabilized mortar method for linear elasticity and compare it to the unstabilized mixed mortar method. For simplicity, both methods use a Lagrange multiplier defined on a trace mesh inherited from one side of the interface only. We derive a quasi-optimality estimate for the stabilized method and present the stability criteria of the mixed $P_1-P_1$ approximation. Our numerical results demonstrate the stability and the converge…
We consider mixed finite element methods with exact symmetric stress tensors. We derive a new quasi-optimal a priori error estimate uniformly valid with respect to the compressibility. For the a posteriori error analysis we consider the Prager-Synge hypercircle principle and introduce a new estimate uniformly valid in the incompressible limit. All estimates are validated by numerical examples.
We consider and discretize a mixed formulation for linear elasticity with weakly imposed symmetry in two and three dimensions. Whereas existing methods mainly deal with simplicial or polygonal meshes, we take advantage of isogeometric analysis (IGA) and consequently allow for shapes with curved boundaries. To introduce the discrete spaces we use isogeometric discrete differential forms defined by proper B-spline spaces. For the proposed schemes a proof of well-posedness and an error estimate are given. Further we discuss our ansatz by means of different numerical examples.
For the planar Navier--Lamé equation in mixed form with symmetric stress tensors, we prove the uniform quasi-optimal convergence of an adaptive method based on the hybridized mixed finite element proposed in [Gong, Wu, and Xu: Numer.~Math., 141 (2019), pp.~569--604]. The main ingredients in the analysis consist of a discrete a posteriori upper bound and a quasi-orthogonality result for the stress field under the mixed boundary condition. Compared with existing adaptive methods, the proposed adaptive algorithm could be directly applied to the traction boundary condition and be easily implemente…

We consider spectral mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element discretizations of the Lamé system of linear elasticity in polyhedral domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$. In order to resolve possible corner, edge, and corner-edge singularities, anisotropic geometric edge meshes consisting of hexahedral elements are applied. We perform a computational study on the discrete inf-sup stability of these methods, and especially focus on the robustness with respect to the Poisson ratio close to the incompressible limit (i.e. the Stokes system). Furthermore, under certain realistic assumptions (for analytic da…
In this work we develop an a posteriori error analysis of a conforming mixed finite element method for solving the coupled problem arising in the interaction between a free fluid and a fluid in a poroelastic medium on isotropic meshes in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\in\{2,3\}$. The approach utilizes the semi-discrete formulation proposed by Ilona Ambartsumyan et al. in (Numerische Mathematik, October 2017). The a posteriori error estimate is based on a suitable evaluation on the residual of the finite element solution. It is proven that the a posteriori error estimate provided in this paper is both reli…
