In this paper we study the approximation of eigenvalues arising from the mixed Hellinger--Reissner elasticity problem by using the simple finite element using partial relaxation of $C^0$ vertex continuity of stresses introduced recently by Jun Hu and Rui Ma. We prove that the method converge when a residual type error estimator is considered and that the estimator decays optimally with respect to the number of degrees of freedom.
We present a Virtual Element Method for the 3D linear elasticity problems, based on Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. In the framework of the small strain theory, we propose a low-order scheme with a-priori symmetric stresses and continuous tractions across element interfaces. A convergence and stability analysis is developed and we confirm the theoretical predictions via some numerical tests.
In the present work, a novel class of hybrid elements is proposed to alleviate the locking anomaly in non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS)-based isogeometric analysis (IGA) using a two-field Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. The proposed hybrid elements are derived by adopting the independent interpolation schemes for displacement and stress field. The key highlight of the present study is the choice and evaluation of higher-order terms for the stress interpolation function to provide a locking-free solution. Furthermore, the present study demonstrates the efficacy of the proposed ele…
In this paper, we study the construction of low-degree robust finite element schemes for planar linear elasticity on general triangulations. Firstly, we present a low-degree nonconforming Helling-Reissner finite element scheme. For the stress tensor space, the piecewise polynomial shape function space is $$ {\rm span}\left\{\left(\begin{array}{cc}1&0\\ 0 & 0\end{array}\right),\left(\begin{array}{cc}0&1\\ 1 & 0\end{array}\right),\left(\begin{array}{cc}0&0\\ 0 & 1\end{array}\right),\left(\begin{array}{cc}0&x\\ x & 0\end{array}\right),\left(\begin{array}{cc}0&y\\ y & 0\end{array}\right),\left(\be…
We extend the hybridization procedure proposed in [Arnold, Brezzi, 1985, ESAIM: M2AN] to the Virtual Element Method for linear elasticity problems based on the Hellinger-Reissner principle. To illustrate such a technique, we focus on the 2D case, but other methods and 3D problems can be considered as well. We also show how to design a better approximation of the displacement field using a straightforward post-processing procedure. The numerical experiments confirm the theory for both two and three-dimensional problems.

In this article we suggest two discretization methods based on isogeometric analysis (IGA) for planar linear elasticity. On the one hand, we apply the well-known ansatz of weakly imposed symmetry for the stress tensor and obtain a well-posed mixed formulation. Such modified mixed problems have been already studied by different authors. But we concentrate on the exploitation of IGA results to handle also curved boundary geometries. On the other hand, we consider the more complicated situation of strong symmetry, i.e. we discretize the mixed weak form determined by the so-called Hellinger-Reissn…
In this work we develop new finite element discretisations of the shear-deformable Reissner--Mindlin plate problem based on the Hellinger-Reissner principle of symmetric stresses. Specifically, we use conforming Hu-Zhang elements to discretise the bending moments in the space of symmetric square integrable fields with a square integrable divergence $\boldsymbol{M} \in \mathcal{HZ} \subset H^{\mathrm{sym}}(\mathrm{Div})$. The latter results in highly accurate approximations of the bending moments $\boldsymbol{M}$ and in the rotation field being in the discontinuous Lebesgue space $\boldsymbolϕ …

The Arnold-Winther element successfully discretizes the Hellinger-Reissner variational formulation of linear elasticity; its development was one of the key early breakthroughs of the finite element exterior calculus. Despite its great utility, it is not available in standard finite element software, because its degrees of freedom are not preserved under the standard Piola push-forward. In this work we apply the novel transformation theory recently developed by Kirby [SMAI-JCM, 4:197-224, 2018] to devise the correct map for transforming the basis on a reference cell to a generic physical triang…
