The numerical approximation of 2D elasticity problems is considered, in the framework of the small strain theory and in connection with the mixed Hellinger-Reissner variational formulation. A low-order Virtual Element Method (VEM) with a-priori symmetric stresses is proposed. Several numerical tests are provided, along with a rigorous stability and convergence analysis.
In this paper we analyze a mixed displacement-pseudostress formulation for the elasticity eigenvalue problem. We propose a finite element method to approximate the pseudostress tensor with Raviart-Thomas elements and the displacement with piecewise polynomials. With the aid of the classic theory for compact operators, we prove that our method is convergent and does not introduce spurious modes. Also, we obtain error estimates for the proposed method. Finally, we report some numerical tests supporting the theoretical results.
We introduce a pure--stress formulation of the elasticity eigenvalue problem with mixed boundary conditions. We propose an H(div)-based discontinuous Galerkin method that imposes strongly the symmetry of the stress for the discretization of the eigenproblem. Under appropriate assumptions on the mesh and the degree of polynomial approximation, we demonstrate the spectral correctness of the discrete scheme and derive optimal rates of convergence for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Finally, we provide numerical examples in two and three dimensions.
We study the approximation of the spectrum of least-squares operators arising from linear elasticity. We consider a two-field (stress/displacement) and a three-field (stress/displacement/vorticity) formulation; other formulations might be analyzed with similar techniques. We prove a priori estimates and we confirm the theoretical results with simple two-dimensional numerical experiments.
In this paper, we extend the tangential-displacement normal-normal-stress continuous (TDNNS) method from [26] to nonlinear elasticity. By means of the Hu-Washizu principle, the distibutional derivatives of the displacement vector are lifted to a regular strain tensor. We introduce three different methods, where either the deformation gradient, the Cauchy-Green strain tensor, or both of them are used as independent variables. Within the linear sub-problems, all stress and strain variables can be locally eliminated leading to an equation system in displacement variables, only. The good performan…
The purpose of this paper is to analyze a mixed method for linear elasticity eigenvalue problem, which approximates numerically the stress, displacement, and rotation, by piecewise $(k+1)$, $k$ and $(k+1)$-th degree polynomial functions ($k\geq 1$), respectively. The numerical eigenfunction of stress is symmetric. By the discrete $H^1$-stability of numerical displacement, we prove an $O(h^{k+2})$ approximation to the $L^{2}$-orthogonal projection of the eigenspace of exact displacement for the eigenvalue problem, with proper regularity assumption. Thus via postprocessing, we obtain a better ap…
We investigate the possibility to determine the divergence-free displacement $\mathbf{u}$ \emph{independently} from the pressure reaction $p$ for a class of boundary value problems in incompressible linear elasticity. If not possible, we investigate if it is possible to determine it \emph{pressure robustly}, i.e. pollution free from the pressure reaction. For convex domains there is but one variational boundary value problem among the investigated that allows the independent determination. It is the one with essential no-penetration conditions combined with homogeneous tangential traction cond…
An interface/boundary-unfitted eXtended hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (X-HDG) method of arbitrary order is proposed for linear elasticity interface problems on unfitted meshes with respect to the interface and domain boundary. The method uses piecewise polynomials of degrees $k\ (>= 1)$ and $k-1$ respectively for the displacement and stress approximations in the interior of elements inside the subdomains separated by the interface, and piecewise polynomials of degree $k$ for the numerical traces of the displacement on the inter-element boundaries inside the subdomains and on the interfac…
We develop a new multipoint stress mixed finite element method for linear elasticity with weakly enforced stress symmetry on simplicial grids. Motivated by the multipoint flux mixed finite element method for Darcy flow, the method utilizes the lowest order Brezzi-Douglas-Marini finite element spaces for the stress and the vertex quadrature rule in order to localize the interaction of degrees of freedom. This allows for local stress elimination around each vertex. We develop two variants of the method. The first uses a piecewise constant rotation and results in a cell-centered system for displa…

We develop a multipoint stress mixed finite element method for linear elasticity with weak stress symmetry on quadrilateral grids, which can be reduced to a symmetric and positive definite cell centered system. The method is developed on simplicial grids in [4]. The method utilizes the lowest order Brezzi-Douglas-Marini finite element spaces for the stress and the trapezoidal quadrature rule in order to localize the interaction of degrees of freedom, which allows for local stress elimination around each vertex. We develop two variants of the method. The first uses a piecewise constant rotation…
A conforming triangular mixed element recently proposed by Hu and Zhang for linear elasticity is extended by rearranging the global degrees of freedom. More precisely, adaptive meshes $\mathcal{T}_1$, $\cdots$, $\mathcal{T}_N$ which are successively refined from an initial mesh $\mathcal{T}_0$ through a newest vertex bisection strategy, admit a crucial hierarchical structure, namely, a newly added vertex $\boldsymbol{x}$ of the mesh $\mathcal{T}_\ell$ is the midpoint of an edge $e$ of the coarse mesh $\mathcal{T}_{\ell-1}$. Such a hierarchical structure is explored to partially relax the $C^0$…
Existing a priori convergence results of the discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin method to solve the problem of linear elasticity are improved. Using duality arguments, we show that higher convergence rates for the displacement can be obtained. Post-processing techniques are introduced in order to prove superconvergence and numerical experiments {\color{black} confirm} our theory.
We introduce a new class of mixed finite element methods for 2D and 3D compressible nonlinear elasticity. The independent unknowns of these conformal methods are displacement, displacement gradient, and the first Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor. The so-called edge finite elements of the curl operator is employed to discretize the trial space of displacement gradients. Motivated by the differential complex of nonlinear elasticity, this choice guarantees that discrete displacement gradients satisfy the Hadamard jump condition for the strain compatibility. We study the stability of the proposed mix…

A stress equilibration procedure for linear elasticity is proposed and analyzed in this paper with emphasis on the behavior for (nearly) incompressible materials. Based on the displacement-pressure approximation computed with a stable finite element pair, it constructs an $H (\text{div})$-conforming, weakly symmetric stress reconstruction. Our focus is on the Taylor-Hood combination of continuous finite element spaces of polynomial degrees $k+1$ and $k$ for the displacement and the pressure, respectively. Our construction leads then to reconstructed stresses by Raviart-Thomas elements of degre…
A family of conforming mixed finite elements with mass lumping on triangular grids are presented for linear elasticity. The stress field is approximated by symmetric $H({\rm div})-P_k (k\geq 3)$ polynomial tensors enriched with higher order bubbles so as to allow mass lumping, which can be viewed as the Hu-Zhang elements enriched with higher order interior bubble functions. The displacement field is approximated by $C^{-1}-P_{k-1}$ polynomial vectors enriched with higher order terms to ensure the stability condition. For both the proposed mixed elements and their mass lumping schemes, optimal …
This paper presents a new and unified approach to the derivation and analysis of many existing, as well as new discontinuous Galerkin methods for linear elasticity problems. The analysis is based on a unified discrete formulation for the linear elasticity problem consisting of four discretization variables: strong symmetric stress tensor $\dsig$ and displacement $\du$ inside each element, and the modifications of these two variables $\hsig$ and $\hu$ on elementary boundaries of elements. Motivated by many relevant methods in the literature, this formulation can be used to derive most existing …

In this article we consider the linear elasticity problem in an axisymmetric three dimensional domain, with data which are axisymmetric and have zero angular component. The weak formulation of the the three dimensional problem reduces to a two dimensional problem on the meridian domain, involving weighted integrals. The problem is formulated in a mixed method framework with both the stress and displacement treated as unknowns. The symmetry condition for the stress tensor is weakly imposed. Well posedness of the continuous weak formulation and its discretization are shown. Two approximation spa…
We introduce conformal mixed finite element methods for $2$D and $3$D incompressible nonlinear elasticity in terms of displacement, displacement gradient, the first Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor, and pressure, where finite elements for the $\mathrm{curl}$ and the $\mathrm{div}$ operators are used to discretize strain and stress, respectively. These choices of elements follow from the strain compatibility and the momentum balance law. Some inf-sup conditions are derived to study the stability of methods. By considering $96$ choices of simplicial finite elements of degree less than or equal to $…
We propose a combined nodal integration and virtual element method for compressible and nearly incompressible elasticity, wherein the strain is averaged at the nodes from the strain of surrounding virtual elements. For the strain averaging procedure, a nodal averaging operator is constructed using a generalization to virtual elements of the node-based uniform strain approach for finite elements. We refer to the proposed technique as the node-based uniform strain virtual element method (NVEM). No additional degrees of freedom are introduced in this approach, thus resulting in a displacement-bas…

The dual formulation for linear elasticity, in contrast to the primal formulation, is not affected by locking, as it is based on the stresses as main unknowns. Thus it is quite attractive for nearly incompressible and incompressible materials. Discretization with mixed finite elements will lead to -- possibly large -- linear saddle point systems with a particular structure. Whereas efficient multigrid methods exist for solving problems in mixed plane elasticity, to the knowledge of the authors, no multigrid methods are readily available for the general dual formulation. Two are the main challe…
