We construct finite element subspaces of the space of symmetric tensors with square-integrable divergence on a three-dimensional domain. These spaces can be used to approximate the stress field in the classical Hellinger--Reissner mixed formulation of the elasticty equations, when standard discontinous finite element spaces are used to approximate the displacement field. These finite element spaces are defined with respect to an arbitrary simplicial triangulation of the domain, and there is one for each positive value of the polynomial degree used for the displacements. For each degree, these provide a stable finite element discretization. The construction of the spaces is closely tied to discretizations of the elasticity complex, and can be viewed as the three-dimensional analogue of the triangular element family for plane elasticity previously proposed by Arnold and Winther.
We present an orthogonal matrix outer product decomposition for the fourth-order conjugate partial-symmetric (CPS) tensor and show that the greedy successive rank-one approximation (SROA) algorithm can recover this decomposition exactly. Based on this matrix decomposition, the CP rank of CPS tensor can be bounded by the matrix rank, which can be applied to low rank tensor completion. Additionally, we give the rank-one equivalence property for the CPS tensor based on the SVD of matrix, which can be applied on the rank-one approximation for CPS tensors.
We consider the problem of decomposing a real-valued symmetric tensor as the sum of outer products of real-valued, pairwise orthogonal vectors. Such decompositions do not generally exist, but we show that some symmetric tensor decomposition problems can be converted to orthogonal problems following the whitening procedure proposed by Anandkumar et al. (2012). If an orthogonal decomposition of an $m$-way $n$-dimensional symmetric tensor exists, we propose a novel method to compute it that reduces to an $n \times n$ symmetric matrix eigenproblem. We provide numerical results demonstrating the ef…
We present an iterative algorithm, called the symmetric tensor eigen-rank-one iterative decomposition (STEROID), for decomposing a symmetric tensor into a real linear combination of symmetric rank-1 unit-norm outer factors using only eigendecompositions and least-squares fitting. Originally designed for a symmetric tensor with an order being a power of two, STEROID is shown to be applicable to any order through an innovative tensor embedding technique. Numerical examples demonstrate the high efficiency and accuracy of the proposed scheme even for large scale problems. Furthermore, we show how …
We propose an algorithm for computing the projection of a symmetric second-order tensor onto the cone of negative semidefinite symmetric tensors with respect to the inner product defined by an assigned positive definite symmetric fourth-order tensor C. The projection problem is written as a semidefinite programming problem and an algorithm based on a primal-dual path-following interior point method coupled with a Mehrotra's predictor-corrector approach is proposed. Implementations based on direct methods are theoretically and numerically investigated taking into account tensors C arising in th…
Conjugate partial-symmetric (CPS) tensor is a generalization of Hermitian matrices. For the CPS tensor decomposition some properties are presented. For real CPS tensors in particular, we note the subtle difference from the complex case of the decomposition. In addition to traditional decompositions in the form of the sum of rank-one tensors, we focus on the orthogonal matrix decomposition of CPS tensors, which inherits nice properties from decomposition of matrices. It then induces a procedure that reobtain the CPS decomposable property of CPS tensors. We also discuss the nonnegativity of the …

Two types of finite element spaces on triangles are constructed for div-div conforming symmetric tensors. Besides the normal-normal continuity, the stress tensor is continuous at vertices and another trace involving combination of derivatives of stress is identified. Polynomial complex, finite element complex, and Hilbert complex are presented and a commuting diagram between them is given. The constructed div-div conforming elements are exploited to discretize the mixed formulation of the biharmonic equation. Optimal order and superconvergence error analysis is provided. By rotation, finite el…
In this paper, we propose a Jacobi-type algorithm to solve the low rank orthogonal approximation problem of symmetric tensors. This algorithm includes as a special case the well-known Jacobi CoM2 algorithm for the approximate orthogonal diagonalization problem of symmetric tensors. We first prove the weak convergence of this algorithm, \textit{i.e.} any accumulation point is a stationary point. Then we study the global convergence of this algorithm under a gradient based ordering for a special case: the best rank-2 orthogonal approximation of 3rd order symmetric tensors, and prove that an accu…

We consider the problem of decomposing a real-valued symmetric tensor as the sum of outer products of real-valued vectors. Algebraic methods exist for computing complex-valued decompositions of symmetric tensors, but here we focus on real-valued decompositions, both unconstrained and nonnegative, for problems with low-rank structure. We discuss when solutions exist and how to formulate the mathematical program. Numerical results show the properties of the proposed formulations (including one that ignores symmetry) on a set of test problems and illustrate that these straightforward formulations…
We present a comprehensive analysis of an algorithm for evaluating high-dimensional polynomials that are invariant under permutations and rotations. The key bottleneck is the contraction of a high-dimensional symmetric and sparse tensor with a specific sparsity pattern that is directly related to the symmetries imposed on the polynomial. We propose an explicit construction of a recursive evaluation strategy and show that it is optimal in the limit of infinite polynomial degree.
Two types of finite element spaces on a tetrahedron are constructed for divdiv conforming symmetric tensors in three dimensions. The key tools of the construction are the decomposition of polynomial tensor spaces and the characterization of the trace operators. First, the divdiv Hilbert complex and its corresponding polynomial complexes are presented. Several decompositions of polynomial vector and tensors spaces are derived from the polynomial complexes. Then, traces for div-div operator are characterized through a Green's identity. Besides the normal-normal component, another trace involving…
We consider the problem of decomposing higher-order moment tensors, i.e., the sum of symmetric outer products of data vectors. Such a decomposition can be used to estimate the means in a Gaussian mixture model and for other applications in machine learning. The $d$th-order empirical moment tensor of a set of $p$ observations of $n$ variables is a symmetric $d$-way tensor. Our goal is to find a low-rank tensor approximation comprising $r \ll p$ symmetric outer products. The challenge is that forming the empirical moment tensors costs $O(pn^d)$ operations and $O(n^d)$ storage, which may be prohi…
This paper discusses the problem of symmetric tensor decomposition on a given variety $X$: decomposing a symmetric tensor into the sum of tensor powers of vectors contained in $X$. In this paper, we first study geometric and algebraic properties of such decomposable tensors, which are crucial to the practical computations of such decompositions. For a given tensor, we also develop a criterion for the existence of a symmetric decomposition on $X$. Secondly and most importantly, we propose a method for computing symmetric tensor decompositions on an arbitrary $X$. As a specific application, Vand…
We study the problem of finding orthogonal low-rank approximations of symmetric tensors. In the case of matrices, the approximation is a truncated singular value decomposition which is then symmetric. Moreover, for rank-one approximations of tensors of any dimension, a classical result proven by Banach in 1938 shows that the optimal approximation can always be chosen to be symmetric. In contrast to these results, this article shows that the corresponding statement is no longer true for orthogonal approximations of higher rank. Specifically, for any of the four common notions of tensor orthogon…
