摘要:
本文提出了一个统一框架,用于为高阶有限元 de Rham 复形构造谱等价的低阶加密离散格式。该理论涵盖 $H^1$、$H({\ m curl})$ 和 $H({\ m div})$ 中的扩散问题,其基础是将加密网格上的低阶离散与用于 Nédélec 和 Raviart–Thomas 单元的高阶基函数相结合,后者利用了多项式 histopolation(通过在特定区域上使用给定平均值进行多项式拟合)的概念。

In this paper we present a unified framework for constructing spectrally equivalent low-order-refined discretizations for the high-order finite element de Rham complex. This theory covers diffusion problems in $H^1$, $H({\rm curl})$, and $H({\rm div})$, and is based on combining a low-order discretization posed on a refined mesh with a high-order basis for Nédélec and Raviart-Thomas elements that makes use of the concept of polynomial histopolation (polynomial fitting using prescribed mean values over certain regions). This spectral equivalence, coupled with algebraic multigrid methods constructed using the low-order discretization, results in highly scalable matrix-free preconditioners for high-order finite element problems in the full de Rham complex. Additionally, a new lowest-order (piecewise constant) preconditioner is developed for high-order interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations, for which spectral equivalence results and convergence proofs for algebraic multigrid methods are provided. In all cases, the spectral equivalence results are independent of polynomial degree and mesh size; for DG methods, they are also independent of the penalty parameter. These new solvers are flexible and easy to use; any "black-box" preconditioner for low-order problems can be used to create an effective and efficient preconditioner for the corresponding high-order problem. A number of numerical experiments are presented, based on an implmentation in the finite element library MFEM. The theoretical properties of these preconditioners are corroborated, and the flexibility and scalability of the method are demonstrated on a range of challenging three-dimensional problems.
The main difficulty in solving the discrete source or eigenvalue problems of the operator $ d^*d $ with iterative methods is to deal with its huge kernel, for example, the $ \nabla \times \nabla \times $ and $- \nabla ( \nabla \cdot ) $ operator. In this paper, we construct a kind of auxiliary schemes for their discrete systems based on Hodge Laplacian on de Rham complex. The spectra of the new schemes are Laplace-like. Then many efficient iterative methods and preconditioning techniques can be applied to them. After getting the solutions of the auxiliary schemes, the desired solutions of the …
We present a framework that relates preconditioning with a posteriori error estimates in finite element methods. In particular, we use standard tools in subspace correction methods to obtain reliable and efficient error estimators. As a simple example, we recover the classical residual error estimators for the second order elliptic equations.
Two de Rham complex sequences of the finite element spaces are introduced for weak finite element functions and weak derivatives developed in the weak Galerkin (WG) finite element methods on general polyhedral elements. One of the sequences uses polynomials of equal order for all the finite element spaces involved in the sequence and the other one uses polynomials of naturally decending orders. It is shown that the diagrams in both de Rham complexes commute for general polyhedral elements. The exactness of one of the complexes is established for the lowest order element.
Finite element de Rham complexes and finite element Stokes complexes with various smoothness in three dimensions are systematically constructed. First smooth scalar finite elements in three dimensions are derived through a non-overlapping decomposition of the simplicial lattice. Based on the smooth scalar finite elements, both H(div)-conforming finite elements and H(curl)-conforming finite elements with various smoothness are devised, which induce the finite element de Rham complexes with various smoothness and the associated commutative diagrams. The div stability is established for the H(div…
We modify the well-known interior penalty finite element discretization method so that it allows for element-by-element assembly. This is possible due to the introduction of additional unknowns associated with the interfaces between neighboring elements. The resulting bilinear form, and a Schur complement (reduced) version of it, are utilized in a number of auxiliary space preconditioners for the original conforming finite element discretization problem. These preconditioners are analyzed on the fine scale and their performance is illustrated on model second order scalar elliptic problems disc…
We describe a fully discrete mixed finite element method for the linearized rotating shallow water model, possibly with damping. While Crank-Nicolson time-stepping conserves energy in the absence of drag or forcing terms and is not subject to a CFL-like stability condition, it requires the inversion of a linear system at each step. We develop weighted-norm preconditioners for this algebraic system that are nearly robust with respect to the physical and discretization parameters in the system. Numerical experiments using Firedrake support the theoretical results.
This paper presents a study of large linear systems resulting from the regular $B$-splines finite element discretization of the $\bm{curl}-\bm{curl}$ and $\bm{grad}-div$ elliptic problems on unit square/cube domains. We consider systems subject to both homogeneous essential and natural boundary conditions. Our objective is to develop a preconditioning strategy that is optimal and robust, based on the Auxiliary Space Preconditioning method proposed by Hiptmair et al. \cite{hiptmair2007nodal}. Our approach is demonstrated to be robust with respect to mesh size, and we also show how it can be com…
Strain smoothing methods such as the smoothed finite element methods (S-FEMs) and the strain-smoothed element~(SSE) method have successfully improved the performance of finite elements, and there have been numerous applications of them in finite element analysis. For the sake of efficient applications to large-scale problems, it is important to develop a mathematically and numerically well-elaborated iterative solver for the strain smoothing methods. In this paper, inspired by the spectral properties of the strain smoothing methods, we propose efficient ways of preconditioning for the methods.…
Using the framework of operator or Calderón preconditioning, uniform preconditioners are constructed for elliptic operators discretized with continuous finite (or boundary) elements. The preconditioners are constructed as the composition of an opposite order operator, discretized on the same ansatz space, and two diagonal scaling operators.
Numerical simulation of incompressible viscous flow, in particular in three space dimensions, continues to remain a challenging task. Space-time finite element methods feature the natural construction of higher order discretization schemes. They offer the potential to achieve accurate results on computationally feasible grids. Linearizing the resulting algebraic problems by Newton's method yields linear systems with block matrices built of $(k+1)\times (k+1)$ saddle point systems, where $k$ denotes the polynomial order of the variational time discretization. We demonstrate numerically the effi…
This paper presents and studies an approach for constructing auxiliary space preconditioners for finite element problems using a constrained nonconforming reformulation, that is based on a proposed modified version of the mortar method. The well-known mortar finite element discretization method is modified to admit a local structure, providing an element-by-element or subdomain-by-subdomain assembly property. This is achieved via the introduction of additional trace finite element spaces and degrees of freedom (unknowns) associated with the interfaces between adjacent elements or subdomains. T…
We devise 3-field and 4-field finite element approximations of a system describing the steady state of an incompressible heat-conducting fluid with implicit non-Newtonian rheology. We prove that the sequence of numerical approximations converges to a weak solution of the problem. We develop a block preconditioner based on augmented Lagrangian stabilisation for a discretisation based on the Scott-Vogelius finite element pair for the velocity and pressure. The preconditioner involves a specialised multigrid algorithm that makes use of a space-decomposition that captures the kernel of the diverge…
The local bounded commuting projection operators of nonstandard finite element de Rham complexes in two and three dimensions are constructed systematically. The assumptions of the main result are mild and can be verified. For three dimensions, the result can be applied to the standard finite element de Rham complex, Hermite complex, Argyris complex and Neilan's Stokes complex. For two dimensions, the result can be applied to the Hermite--Stenberg complex and the Falk--Neilan Stokes complex.
This work proposes an original preconditioner that couples the Constrained Pressure Residual (CPR) method with block preconditioning for the efficient solution of the linearized systems of equations arising from fully implicit multiphase flow models. This preconditioner, denoted as Block CPR (BCPR), is specifically designed for Lagrange multipliers-based flow models, such as those generated by Mixed Hybrid Finite Element (MHFE) approximations. An original MHFE-based formulation of the two-phase flow model is taken as a reference for the development of the BCPR preconditioner, in which the set …
This paper is devoted to the construction of finite elements on grids that consist of general quadrilaterals not limited in parallelograms. Two finite elements defined as Ciarlet's triple are established for the $H^1$ and $H(\rm rot)$ elliptic problems, respectively. An $\mathcal{O}(h)$ order convergence rate in energy norm for both of them and an $\mathcal{O}(h^2)$ order convergence in $L^2$ norm for the $H^1$ scheme are proved under the asymptotic-parallelogram assumption on the grids. Further, the two finite element spaces on general quadrilateral grids, together with the space of piecewise…
In this paper, we propose a new finite element solution approach to the multi-compartmental Darcy equations describing flow and interactions in a porous medium with multiple fluid compartments. We introduce a new numerical formulation and a block-diagonal preconditioner. The robustness with respect to variations in material parameters is demonstrated by theoretical considerations and numerical examples.
We define a conforming B-spline discretisation of the de Rham complex on multipatch geometries. We introduce and analyse the properties of interpolation operators onto these spaces which commute w.r.t. the surface differential operators. Using these results as a basis, we derive new convergence results of optimal order w.r.t. the respective energy spaces and provide approximation properties of the spline discretisations of trace spaces for application in the theory of isogeometric boundary element methods. Our analysis allows for a straightforward generalisation to finite element methods.
This is the third part in a series on a mass conserving, high order, mixed finite element method for Stokes flow. In this part, we study a block-diagonal preconditioner for the indefinite Schur complement system arising from the discretization of the Stokes equations using these elements. The underlying finite element method is uniformly stable in both the mesh size h and polynomial order p, and we prove bounds on the eigenvalues of the preconditioned system which are independent of h and grow modestly in p. The analysis relates the Schur complement system to an appropriate variational setting…

We develop structure-preserving finite element methods for the incompressible, resistive Hall magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. These equations incorporate the Hall current term in Ohm's law and provide a more appropriate description of fully ionized plasmas than the standard MHD equations on length scales close to or smaller than the ion skin depth. We introduce a stationary discrete variational formulation of Hall MHD that enforces the magnetic Gauss's law exactly (up to solver tolerances) and prove the well-posedness and convergence of a Picard linearization. For the transient problem, …
We propose an efficient solver for saddle point problems arising from finite element approximations of nonlocal multi-phase Allen--Cahn variational inequalities. The solver is seen to behave mesh independently and to have only a very mild dependence on the number of phase field variables. In addition we prove convergence, in three GMRES iterations, of the approximation of the two phase problem, regardless of mesh size or interfacial width. Numerical results are presented that illustrate the competitiveness of this approach.

A new conservative finite element solver for the three-dimensional steady magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) kinematics equations is presented. The solver utilizes magnetic vector potential and current density as solution variables, which are discretized by H(curl)-conforming edge-element and H(div)-conforming face element respectively. As a result, the divergence-free constraints of discrete current density and magnetic induction are both satisfied. Moreover the solutions also preserve the total magnetic helicity. The generated linear algebraic equation is a typical dual saddle-point problem that is il…
A novel method to enable application of the Multiscale Restricted Smoothed Basis (MsRSB) method to non M-matrices is presented. The original MsRSB method is enhanced with a filtering strategy enforcing M-matrix properties to enable the robust application of MsRSB as a preconditioner. Through applications to porous media flow and linear elastic geomechanics, the method is proven to be effective for scalar and vector problems with multipoint finite volume (FV) and finite element (FE) discretization schemes, respectively. Realistic complex (un)structured two- and three-dimensional test cases are …

In this paper, we consider the numerical solution of the poroelasticity problem with stochastic properties. We present a Two-stage Markov Chain Monte Carlo method for geomechanical subsidence. In this work, we study two techniques of preconditioning: (MS) multiscale method for model order reduction and (ML) machine learning technique. The purpose of preconditioning is the fast sampling, where a new proposal is first testes by a cheap multiscale solver or using fast prediction of the neural network and the full fine grid computations will be conducted only if the proposal passes the first step.…
