We present a framework that relates preconditioning with a posteriori error estimates in finite element methods. In particular, we use standard tools in subspace correction methods to obtain reliable and efficient error estimators. As a simple example, we recover the classical residual error estimators for the second order elliptic equations.
We modify the well-known interior penalty finite element discretization method so that it allows for element-by-element assembly. This is possible due to the introduction of additional unknowns associated with the interfaces between neighboring elements. The resulting bilinear form, and a Schur complement (reduced) version of it, are utilized in a number of auxiliary space preconditioners for the original conforming finite element discretization problem. These preconditioners are analyzed on the fine scale and their performance is illustrated on model second order scalar elliptic problems disc…
We describe a fully discrete mixed finite element method for the linearized rotating shallow water model, possibly with damping. While Crank-Nicolson time-stepping conserves energy in the absence of drag or forcing terms and is not subject to a CFL-like stability condition, it requires the inversion of a linear system at each step. We develop weighted-norm preconditioners for this algebraic system that are nearly robust with respect to the physical and discretization parameters in the system. Numerical experiments using Firedrake support the theoretical results.
This paper presents a study of large linear systems resulting from the regular $B$-splines finite element discretization of the $\bm{curl}-\bm{curl}$ and $\bm{grad}-div$ elliptic problems on unit square/cube domains. We consider systems subject to both homogeneous essential and natural boundary conditions. Our objective is to develop a preconditioning strategy that is optimal and robust, based on the Auxiliary Space Preconditioning method proposed by Hiptmair et al. \cite{hiptmair2007nodal}. Our approach is demonstrated to be robust with respect to mesh size, and we also show how it can be com…
Strain smoothing methods such as the smoothed finite element methods (S-FEMs) and the strain-smoothed element~(SSE) method have successfully improved the performance of finite elements, and there have been numerous applications of them in finite element analysis. For the sake of efficient applications to large-scale problems, it is important to develop a mathematically and numerically well-elaborated iterative solver for the strain smoothing methods. In this paper, inspired by the spectral properties of the strain smoothing methods, we propose efficient ways of preconditioning for the methods.…
Numerical simulation of incompressible viscous flow, in particular in three space dimensions, continues to remain a challenging task. Space-time finite element methods feature the natural construction of higher order discretization schemes. They offer the potential to achieve accurate results on computationally feasible grids. Linearizing the resulting algebraic problems by Newton's method yields linear systems with block matrices built of $(k+1)\times (k+1)$ saddle point systems, where $k$ denotes the polynomial order of the variational time discretization. We demonstrate numerically the effi…
This paper presents and studies an approach for constructing auxiliary space preconditioners for finite element problems using a constrained nonconforming reformulation, that is based on a proposed modified version of the mortar method. The well-known mortar finite element discretization method is modified to admit a local structure, providing an element-by-element or subdomain-by-subdomain assembly property. This is achieved via the introduction of additional trace finite element spaces and degrees of freedom (unknowns) associated with the interfaces between adjacent elements or subdomains. T…
We devise 3-field and 4-field finite element approximations of a system describing the steady state of an incompressible heat-conducting fluid with implicit non-Newtonian rheology. We prove that the sequence of numerical approximations converges to a weak solution of the problem. We develop a block preconditioner based on augmented Lagrangian stabilisation for a discretisation based on the Scott-Vogelius finite element pair for the velocity and pressure. The preconditioner involves a specialised multigrid algorithm that makes use of a space-decomposition that captures the kernel of the diverge…
This work proposes an original preconditioner that couples the Constrained Pressure Residual (CPR) method with block preconditioning for the efficient solution of the linearized systems of equations arising from fully implicit multiphase flow models. This preconditioner, denoted as Block CPR (BCPR), is specifically designed for Lagrange multipliers-based flow models, such as those generated by Mixed Hybrid Finite Element (MHFE) approximations. An original MHFE-based formulation of the two-phase flow model is taken as a reference for the development of the BCPR preconditioner, in which the set …
In this paper we introduce and analyze the residual-based a posteriori error estimation of the partially penalized immersed finite element method for solving elliptic interface problems. The immersed finite element method can be naturally utilized on interface-unfitted meshes. Our a posteriori error estimate is proved to be both reliable and efficient with reliability constant independent of the location of the interface. Numerical results indicate that the efficiency constant is independent of the interface location and that the error estimation is robust with respect to the coefficient contr…
A class of linear parabolic equations are considered. We give a posteriori error estimates in the maximum norm for a method that comprises extrapolation applied to the backward Euler method in time and finite element discretisations in space. We use the idea of elliptic reconstructions and certain bounds for the Green's function of the parabolic operator.
In this paper we develop a new a posteriori error analysis for the Monge-Ampère equation approximated by conforming finite element method on isotropic meshes in 2D. The approach utilizes a slight variant of the mixed discretization proposed by Gerard Awanou and Hengguang Li in International Journal of Numerical Analysis and Modeling, 11(4):745-761, 2014. The a posteriori error estimate is based on a suitable evaluation on the residual of the finite element solution. It is proven that the a posteriori error estimate provided in this paper is both reliable and efficient.
In this paper, a residual-type a posteriori error estimator is proposed and analyzed for a modified weak Galerkin finite element method solving linear elasticity problems. The estimator is proven to be both reliable and efficient because it provides upper and lower bounds on the actual error in a discrete energy norm. Numerical experiments are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the this error estimator.
We derive an anisotropic a posteriori error estimate for the adaptive conforming Virtual Element approximation of a paradigmatic two-dimensional elliptic problem. In particular, we introduce a quasi-interpolant operator and exploit its approximation results to prove the reliability of the error indicator. We design and implement the corresponding adaptive polygonal anisotropic algorithm. Several numerical tests assess the superiority of the proposed algorithm in comparison with standard polygonal isotropic mesh refinement schemes.
An explicit and computable error estimator for the $hp$ version of the virtual element method (VEM), together with lower and upper bounds with respect to the exact energy error, is presented. Such error estimator is employed to provide $hp$ adaptive mesh refinements for very general polygonal meshes. In addition, a novel VEM $hp$ Clément quasi-interpolant, instrumental for the a posteriori error analysis, is introduced. The performances of the adaptive method are validated by a number of numerical experiments.
In two dimensions, we propose and analyze an a posteriori error estimator for the acoustic spectral problem based on the virtual element method in $\H(÷;Ω)$. Introducing an auxiliary unknown, we use the fact that the primal formulation of the acoustic problem is equivalent to a mixed formulation, in order to prove a superconvergence result, necessary to despise high order terms. Under the virtual element approach, we prove that our local indicator is reliable and globally efficient in the $Ł^2$-norm. We provide numerical results to assess the performance of the proposed error estimator.
Least-Squares versus Partial Least-Squares Finite Element Methods: Robust A Priori and A Posteriori Error Estimates of Augmented Mixed Finite Element Methods
In this paper, we propose a new finite element solution approach to the multi-compartmental Darcy equations describing flow and interactions in a porous medium with multiple fluid compartments. We introduce a new numerical formulation and a block-diagonal preconditioner. The robustness with respect to variations in material parameters is demonstrated by theoretical considerations and numerical examples.
This is the third part in a series on a mass conserving, high order, mixed finite element method for Stokes flow. In this part, we study a block-diagonal preconditioner for the indefinite Schur complement system arising from the discretization of the Stokes equations using these elements. The underlying finite element method is uniformly stable in both the mesh size h and polynomial order p, and we prove bounds on the eigenvalues of the preconditioned system which are independent of h and grow modestly in p. The analysis relates the Schur complement system to an appropriate variational setting…

Two asymptotically exact a posteriori error estimates are proposed for eigenvalues by the nonconforming Crouzeix--Raviart and enriched Crouzeix-- Raviart elements. The main challenge in the design of such error estimators comes from the nonconformity of the finite element spaces used. Such nonconformity causes two difficulties, the first one is the construction of high accuracy gradient recovery algorithms, the second one is a computable high accuracy approximation of a consistency error term. The first difficulty was solved for both nonconforming elements in a previous paper. Two methods are …
We develop structure-preserving finite element methods for the incompressible, resistive Hall magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. These equations incorporate the Hall current term in Ohm's law and provide a more appropriate description of fully ionized plasmas than the standard MHD equations on length scales close to or smaller than the ion skin depth. We introduce a stationary discrete variational formulation of Hall MHD that enforces the magnetic Gauss's law exactly (up to solver tolerances) and prove the well-posedness and convergence of a Picard linearization. For the transient problem, …
An example of explicit implementation strategy and preconditioning for the high order edge finite elements applied to the time-harmonic Maxwell's equations
Functional error estimates are well-established tools for a posteriori error estimation and related adaptive mesh-refinement for the finite element method (FEM). The present work proposes a first functional error estimate for the boundary element method (BEM). One key feature is that the derived error estimates are independent of the BEM discretization and provide guaranteed lower and upper bounds for the unknown error. In particular, our analysis covers Galerkin BEM and the collocation method, what makes the approach of particular interest for scientific computations and engineering applicati…
