Two de Rham complex sequences of the finite element spaces are introduced for weak finite element functions and weak derivatives developed in the weak Galerkin (WG) finite element methods on general polyhedral elements. One of the sequences uses polynomials of equal order for all the finite element spaces involved in the sequence and the other one uses polynomials of naturally decending orders. It is shown that the diagrams in both de Rham complexes commute for general polyhedral elements. The exactness of one of the complexes is established for the lowest order element.
Finite element de Rham complexes and finite element Stokes complexes with various smoothness in three dimensions are systematically constructed. First smooth scalar finite elements in three dimensions are derived through a non-overlapping decomposition of the simplicial lattice. Based on the smooth scalar finite elements, both H(div)-conforming finite elements and H(curl)-conforming finite elements with various smoothness are devised, which induce the finite element de Rham complexes with various smoothness and the associated commutative diagrams. The div stability is established for the H(div…
The local bounded commuting projection operators of nonstandard finite element de Rham complexes in two and three dimensions are constructed systematically. The assumptions of the main result are mild and can be verified. For three dimensions, the result can be applied to the standard finite element de Rham complex, Hermite complex, Argyris complex and Neilan's Stokes complex. For two dimensions, the result can be applied to the Hermite--Stenberg complex and the Falk--Neilan Stokes complex.

We construct conforming finite element elasticity complexes on the Alfeld splits of tetrahedra. The complex consists of vector fields and symmetric tensor fields, interlinked via the linearized deformation operator, the linearized curvature operator, and the divergence operator, respectively. The construction is based on an algebraic machinery that derives the elasticity complex from de~Rham complexes, and smoother finite element differential forms.
We construct smooth finite element de Rham complexes in two space dimensions. This leads to three families of curl-curl conforming finite elements, two of which contain two existing families. The simplest triangular and rectangular finite elements have only 6 and 8 degrees of freedom, respectively. Numerical experiments for each family demonstrate the convergence and efficiency of the elements for solving the quad-curl problem.

Several smooth finite element de Rham complexes are constructed in three-dimensional space, which yield three families of grad-div conforming finite elements. The simplest element has only 8 degrees of freedom (DOFs) for a tetrahedron and 14 DOFs for a cuboid. These elements naturally lead to conforming approximations to quad-div problems. Numerical experiments for each family validate the correctness and efficiency of the elements for solving the quad-div problem.
Energy-preserving numerical methods for solving the Hodge wave equation is developed in this paper. Based on the de Rham complex, the Hodge wave equation can be formulated as a first-order system and mixed finite element methods using finite element exterior calculus is used to discretize the space. A continuous time Galerkin method, which can be viewed as a modification of the Crank-Nicolson method, is used to discretize the time which results in a full discrete method preserving the energy exactly when the source term is vanished. A projection based operator is used to establish the optimal …
We investigate discretization of $H(\mathrm{curl})$ and $H(\mathrm{div})$ in two and three space dimensions by partially discontinuous nodal finite elements, i.e., vector-valued Lagrange finite elements with discontinuity in certain directions. These spaces can be implemented as a combination of continuous and discontinuous Lagrange elements and fit in de~Rham complexes. We construct well-conditioned nodal bases.
This article surveys research on the application of compatible finite element methods to large scale atmosphere and ocean simulation. Compatible finite element methods extend Arakawa's C-grid finite difference scheme to the finite element world. They are constructed from a discrete de Rham complex, which is a sequence of finite element spaces which are linked by the operators of differential calculus. The use of discrete de Rham complexes to solve partial differential equations is well established, but in this article we focus on the specifics of dynamical cores for simulating weather, oceans …
