Index expectation curvature K(x) = E[i_f(x)] on a compact Riemannian 2d-manifold M is the expectation of Poincare-Hopf indices i_f(x) and so satisfies the Gauss-Bonnet relation that the interval of K over M is Euler characteristic X(M). Unlike the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern integrand, such curvatures are in general non-local. We show that for small 2d-manifolds M with boundary embedded in a parallelizable 2d-manifold N of definite sectional curvature sign e, an index expectation K(x) with definite sign e^d exists. The function K(x) is constructed as a product of sectional index expectation curvature averages K_k(x) = E[i_k(x)] of a probability space of Morse functions f for which i_f(x) is the product of i_k(x), where the i_k are independent and so uncorrelated.
We compute lower bounds for the Morse index and nullity of constant mean curvature tori of revolution in the three-dimensional unit sphere. In particular, all such tori have index at least five, with index growing at least linearly with respect to the number of the surfaces' bulges, and the index of such tori can be arbitrarily large.
We introduce a notion of index for shrinkers of the mean curvature flow. We then prove a gap theorem for the index of rotationally symmetric immersed shrinkers in R^3, namely, that such shrinkers have index at least 3, unless they are one of the stable ones: the sphere, the cylinder, or the plane. We also provide a generalization of the result to higher dimensions.
In this work we give a new lower bound on the Morse index for constant mean curvature tori of revolution immersed in the three-sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$, by computing some explicit negative eigenvalues for the corresponding Jacobi operator.
In 1968, Simons introduced the concept of index for hypersurfaces immersed into the Euclidean sphere S^{n+1}. Intuitively, the index measures the number of independent directions in which a given hypersurface fails to minimize area. The earliest results regarding the index focused on the case of minimal hypersurfaces. Many such results established lower bounds for the index. More recently, however, mathematicians have generalized these results to hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature. In this paper, we consider hypersurfaces of constant mean curvature immersed into the sphere and give low…
We prove index estimates for closed and free boundary CMC surfaces in certain $3$-dimensional submanifolds of some Euclidean space. When the mean curvature is large enough we are able to prove that the index of a CMC surface in an arbitrary $3$-manifold is bounded below by a linear function of its genus.
In this paper, we consider compact free boundary constant mean curvature surfaces immersed in a mean convex body of the Euclidean space or in the unit sphere. We prove that the Morse index is bounded from below by a linear function of the genus and number of boundary components.
We give three lower bounds for the Morse index of a constant mean curvature torus in Euclidean 3-space in terms of its spectral genus g. The first two lower bounds grow linearly in g and are stronger for smaller values of g, while the third grows quadratically in g but is weaker for smaller values of g.
In this paper, we consider minimal hypersurfaces in the product space $\mathbb{H}^n \times \mathbb{R}$. We begin by studying examples of rotation hypersurfaces and hypersurfaces invariant under hyperbolic translations. We then consider minimal hypersurfaces with finite total curvature. This assumption implies that the corresponding curvature goes to zero uniformly at infinity. We show that surfaces with finite total intrinsic curvature have finite index. The converse statement is not true as shown by our examples which also serve as useful barriers.
In this paper, we prove that a noncompact complete hypersurface with finite weighted volume, weighted mean curvature vector bounded in norm, and isometrically immersed in a complete weighted manifold is proper. In addition, we obtain an estimate for $f$-stability index of a constant weighted mean curvature hypersurface with finite weighted volume and isometrically immersed in a shrinking gradient Ricci soliton that admits at least one parallel field globally defined. For such hypersurface, we still give a necessary condition for equality to be achieved in the estimate obtained.
Let $M$ be a compact constant mean curvature surface either in $\mathbb{S}^3$ or $\mathbb{R}^3$. In this paper we prove that the stability index of $M$ is bounded below by a linear function of the genus. As a by product we obtain a comparison theorem between the spectrum of the Jacobi operator of $M$ and those of Hodge Laplacian of $1$-forms on $M$.
We show that the index of a constant mean curvature 1 surface in hyperbolic 3-space is completely determined by the compact Riemann surface and secondary Gauss map that represent it in Bryant's Weierstrass representation. We give three applications of this observation. Firstly, it allows us to explicitly compute the index of the catenoid cousins and some other examples. Secondly, it allows us to be able to apply a method similar to that of Choe (using Killing vector fields on minimal surfaces in Euclidean 3-space) to our case as well, resulting in lower bounds of index for other examples. And …
In this paper we investigate the connection between the index and the geometry and topology of capillary surfaces. We prove an index estimate for compact capillary surfaces immersed in general 3-manifolds with boundary. We also study noncompact capillary surfaces with finite index and show that, under suitable curvature assumptions, such surface is conformally equivalent to a compact Riemann surface with boundary, punctured at finitely many points. We then prove that a weakly stable capillary surface immersed in a half-space of $\mathbb{R}^3$ which is minimal or has a contact angle less than o…
Suppose that $S^n$ is given a generic Riemannian metric with sectional curvatures which satisfy a suitable pinching condition formulated in terms of complex sectional curvatures. This pinching condition is satisfied by manifolds whose real sectional curvatures $K_r(σ)$ satisfy $$1/2 < K_r(σ) \leq 1.$$ Then the number of minimal two spheres of Morse index $λ$, for $n-2 \leq λ\leq 2n-5$, is at least $p_{3}(λ-n+2)$, where $p_{3}(k)$ is the number of $k$-cells in the Schubert cell decomposition for $G_3({\mathbb R}^{n+1})$.
Using the local picture of the degeneration of sequences of minimal surfaces developed by Chodosh, Ketover and Maximo we show that in any closed Riemannian 3-manifold $(M,g)$, the genus of an embedded CMC surface can be bounded only in terms of its index and area, independently of the value of its mean curvature. We also show that if $M$ has finite fundamental group, the genus and area of any non-minimal embedded CMC surface can be bounded in term of its index and a lower bound for its mean curvature.
We prove that the expectation value of the index function i(x) over a probability space of injective function f on any finite simple graph G=(V,E) is equal to the curvature K(x) at the vertex x. This result complements and links Gauss-Bonnet sum K(x) = chi(G) and Poincare-Hopf sum i(x) = chi(G) which both hold for arbitrary finite simple graphs.
We consider the following generalisation of a well-known problem in Riemannian geometry: When is a smooth real-valued function s on a given compact n-dimensional manifold M (with or without boundary) the scalar curvature of some smooth pseudo-Riemannian metric of index q on M? We prove that this is the case for every s if 2<q<n-2, provided M admits a metric of index q at all. In fact, if 2<q<n-2, then each connected component of the space of pseudo-Riemannian metrics of index q on M contains a metric with scalar curvature s. We prove several theorems for pseudo-Riemannian metrics of index 1 or…
We study the Kaehler metric given by the logarithm of a cubic form on its complexified index cone. Under mirror symmetry, this metric should asymptotically correspond to the Weil-Petersson metric. Using the theory of special Kaehler manifolds, a proof of a curvature formula for this metric is given.
It is shown that if a $C^2$ surface $M\subset\mathbb R^3$ has negative curvature on the complement of a point $q\in M$, then the $\mathbb Z/2$-valued Poincaré-Hopf index at $q$ of either distribution of principal directions on $M-\{q\}$ is non-positive. Conversely, any non-positive half-integer arises in this fashion. The proof of the index estimate is based on geometric-topological arguments, an index theorem for symmetric tensors on Riemannian surfaces, and some aspects of the classical Poincaré-Bendixson theory.
We prove a general relative higher index theorem for complete manifolds with positive scalar curvature towards infinity. We apply this theorem to study Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature on manifolds. For every two metrics of positive scalar curvature on a closed manifold and a Galois cover of the manifold, we define a secondary higher index class. Non-vanishing of this higher index class is an obstruction for the two metrics to be in the same connected component of the space of metrics of positive scalar curvature. In the special case where one metric is induced from the other by…
In this note, we investigate conformally flat submanifolds of Euclidean space with positive index of relative nullity. Let $M^n$ be a complete conformally flat manifold and let $f\colon M^n\to \R^m$ be an isometric immersion. We prove the following results: (1) If the index of relative nullity is at least two, then $M^n$ is flat and $f$ is a cylinder over a flat submanifold. (2) If the scalar curvature of $M^n$ is non-negative and the index of relative nullity is positive, then $f$ is a cylinder over a submanifold with constant non-negative sectional curvature. (3) If the scalar curvature of $…
We analyze the obstruction to metrics of positive scalar curvature within a given bounded distortion class of metrics. This obstruction lives in a non-Hausdorff cohomology group Poincare dual to the uniformly finite homology studied by Block and Weinberger. One of the applications is a converse to their theorem on infinite connected sums, giving a complete picture of when such manifolds have metrics of positive scalar curvature.
Let $M$ be a Riemannian 3-manifold of nonnegative Ricci curvature, Ric $\geq 0.$ We suppose that $M$ is conformally flat and simply connected or more generally that it admits a conformal immersion into the standard 3-sphere. Let $Σ$ be a compact connected and orientable surface immersed in $M$ which is a stable constant mean curvature (CMC) surface or an index one minimal surface. We prove that $Σ$ is homeomorphic either to a sphere or to a torus. Moreover, in case $Σ$ is homeomorphic to a torus, then it is embedded, minimal, conformal to a flat square torus and Ric$(N)=0$ where $N$ is a unit …
We generalize the famous result of Gromov and Lawson on the nonexistence of metric of positive scalar curvature on enlargeable manifolds to the case of foliations, without using index theorems on noncompact manifolds.
The Weil-Petersson metric for the moduli space of Riemann surfaces has negative sectional curvature. Surfaces represented in the complement of a compact set in the moduli space have short geodesics. At such surfaces the Weil-Petersson metric is approximately a product metric. An almost product metric has sections with almost vanishing curvature. We bound the sectional curvature away from zero in terms of the product of lengths of short geodesics on Riemann surfaces. We give examples and an expectation for the actual vanishing rate.
In this paper we give the precise index growth for the embedded hypersurfaces of revolution with constant mean curvature (cmc) 1 in $\R^{n}$ (Delaunay unduloids). When $n=3$, using the asymptotics result of Korevaar, Kusner and Solomon, we derive an explicit asymptotic index growth rate for finite topology cmc 1 surfaces with properly embedded ends. Similar results are obtained for hypersurfaces with cmc bigger than 1 in hyperbolic space.
This is a survey paper which gathers some results related with the study of Positive Scalar Curvature metrics in connection with the Baum-Connes assembly map.
In this paper we prove that two-dimensional translating solitons in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with finite $L$-index are homeomorphic to a plane or a cylinder and that a two-dimensional self-expander with finite $L$-index and sub exponential weighted volume growth has finite topology. We also prove that translating solitons and self-expanders have finite topology, provided the bottom of the spectrum of the $L$-stability operator is bounded from below and their weighted volume have subexponential growth.
For any 3-manifold M and any nonnegative integer g, we give here examples of metrics on M each of which has a sequence of embedded minimal surfaces of genus g and without Morse index bounds. On any spherical space form S^3/Gamma we construct such a metric with positive scalar curvature. More generally we construct such a metric with Scal>0 (and such surfaces) on any 3-manifold which carries a metric with Scal>0. In all but one of these examples the Hausdorff limit will be a singular minimal lamination. The singularities being in each case exactly two points lying on a closed leaf (the leaf is …
We study the singularities of the exponential map in semi Riemannian locally symmetric manifolds. Conjugate points along geodesics depend only on real negative eigenvalues of the curvature tensor, and their contribution to the Maslov index of the geodesic is computed explicitly. We prove that degeneracy of conjugate points, which is a phenomenon that can only occur in semi-Riemannian geometry, is caused in the locally symmetric case by the lack of diagonalizability of the curvature tensor. The case of Lie groups endowed with a bi-invariant metric is studied in some detail, and conditions are g…
We introduce partial secondary invariants associated to complete Riemannian metrics which have uniformly positive scalar curvature outside a prescribed subset on a spin manifold. These can be used to distinguish such Riemannian metrics up to concordance relative to the prescribed subset. We exhibit a general external product formula for partial secondary invariants, from which we deduce product formulas for the higher rho-invariant of a metric with uniformly positive scalar curvature as well as for the higher relative index of two metrics with uniformly positive scalar curvature. Our methods y…
We study Fredholm properties and index formulas for Dirac operators over complete Riemannian manifolds with straight ends. An important class of examples of such manifolds are complete Riemannian manifolds with pinched negative sectional curvature and finite volume.
Let $M$ be a closed spin manifold which supports a positive scalar curvature metric. The set of concordance classes of positive scalar curvature metrics on $M$ forms an abelian group $P(M)$ after fixing a positive scalar curvature metric. The group $P(M)$ measures the size of the space of positive scalar curvature metrics on $M$. Weinberger and Yu gave a lower bound of the rank of $P(M)$ in terms of the number of torsion elements of $π_1(M)$. In this paper, we give a sharper lower bound of the rank of $P(M)$ by studying the image of the relative higher index map from $P(M)$ to the real K-theor…
We use an index-theoretic technique of Hitchin to show that the space of complete Riemannian metrics of nonnegative sectional curvature on certain open spin manifolds has nontrivial homotopy groups in infinitely many degrees. A new ingredient of independent interest is homotopy density of the subspace of metrics with cylindrical ends.
Given $\varepsilon_0>0$, $I\in \mathbb{N}\cup \{0\}$ and $K_0,H_0\geq0$, let $X$ be a complete Riemannian $3$-manifold with injectivity radius $\mbox{Inj}(X)\geq \varepsilon_0$ and with the supremum of absolute sectional curvature at most $K_0$, and let $M \looparrowright X$ be a complete immersed surface of constant mean curvature $H\in [0,H_0]$ with index at most $I$. For such $M \looparrowright X$, we prove Structure Theorem 1.2 which describes how the interesting ambient geometry of the immersion is organized locally around at most $I$ points of $M$ where the norm of the second fundamental…
We show that in a closed 3-manifold with a generic metric of positive Ricci curvature, there are minimal surfaces of arbitrary large Morse index, which partially confirms a conjecture by F. Marques and A. Neves. We prove this by analyzing the lamination structure of the limit of minimal surfaces with bounded Morse index.
The Allen-Cahn equation is a semilinear PDE which is deeply linked to the theory of minimal hypersurfaces via a singular limit. We prove curvature estimates and strong sheet separation estimates for stable solutions (building on recent work of Wang-Wei) of the Allen-Cahn equation on a 3-manifold. Using these, we are able to show for generic metrics on a 3-manifold, minimal surfaces arising from Allen-Cahn solutions with bounded energy and bounded Morse index are two-sided and occur with multiplicity one and the expected Morse index. This confirms, in the Allen-Cahn setting, a strong form of th…
We prove qualitative estimates on the total curvature of closed minimal hypersurfaces in closed Riemannian manifolds in terms of their index and area, restricting to the case where the hypersurface has dimension less than seven. In particular, we prove that if we are given a sequence of closed minimal hypersurfaces of bounded area and index, the total curvature along the sequence is quantised in terms of the total curvature of some limit surface, plus a sum of total curvatures of complete properly embedded minimal hypersurfaces in Euclidean space - all of which are finite. Thus, we obtain qual…
This is a continuation of our previous work with Botvinnik on the nontriviality of the secondary index invariant on spaces of metrics of positive scalar curvature, in which we take the fundamental group of the manifolds into account. We show that the secondary index invariant associated to the vanishing of the Rosenberg index can be highly nontrivial, for positive scalar curvature Spin manifolds with torsionfree fundamental groups which satisfy the Baum--Connes conjecture. For example, we produce a compact Spin 6-manifold such that its space of positive scalar curvature metrics has each ration…
We prove a local rigidity result for infinitesimally rigid capillary surfaces in some Riemannian $3$-manifolds with mean convex boundary. We also derive bounds on the genus, number of boundary components and area of any compact two-sided capillary minimal surface with low index under certain assumptions on the curvature of the ambient manifold and of its boundary.
A differential geometric characterization of the braid-index of a link is found. After multiplication by 2pi, it equals the infimum of the sum of total curvature and total absolute torsion over holonomic representatives of the link. Upper and lower bounds for the infimum of total curvature over holonomic representatives of a link are given in terms of its braid- and bridge-index. Examples showing that these bounds are sharp are constructed.
