In this note, we investigate conformally flat submanifolds of Euclidean space with positive index of relative nullity. Let $M^n$ be a complete conformally flat manifold and let $f\colon M^n\to \R^m$ be an isometric immersion. We prove the following results: (1) If the index of relative nullity is at least two, then $M^n$ is flat and $f$ is a cylinder over a flat submanifold. (2) If the scalar curvature of $M^n$ is non-negative and the index of relative nullity is positive, then $f$ is a cylinder over a submanifold with constant non-negative sectional curvature. (3) If the scalar curvature of $M^n$ is non-zero and the index of relative nullity is constant and equal to one, then $f$ is a cylinder over a $(n-1)$-dimensional submanifold with non-zero constant sectional curvature.
We use techniques based on the splitting tensor to explicitly integrate the Codazzi equation along the relative nullity distribution and express the second fundamental form in terms of the Jacobi tensor of the ambient space. This approach allows us to easily recover several important results in the literature on complete submanifolds with relative nullity of the sphere as well as derive new strong consequences in hyperbolic and Euclidean spaces. Among the consequences of our main theorem are results on submanifolds with sufficiently high index of relative nullity, submanifolds with nonpositive…
We investigate complete minimal submanifolds $f\colon M^3\to\Hy^n$ in hyperbolic space with index of relative nullity at least one at any point. The case when the ambient space is either the Euclidean space or the round sphere was already studied in \cite{dksv1} and \cite{dksv2}, respectively. If the scalar curvature is bounded from below we conclude that the submanifold has to be either totally geodesic or a generalized cone over a complete minimal surface lying in an equidistant submanifold of $\Hy^n$.
In this paper, we investigate geometric conditions for isometric immersions with positive index of relative nullity to be cylinders. There is an abundance of noncylindrical $n$-dimensional minimal submanifolds with index of relative nullity $n-2$, fully described by Dajczer and Florit \cite{DF2} in terms of a certain class of elliptic surfaces. Opposed to this, we prove that nonminimal $n$-dimensional submanifolds in space forms of any codimension are locally cylinders provided that they carry a totally geodesic distribution of rank $n-2\geq2,$ which is contained in the relative nullity distri…
We prove that any conformally flat submanifold with flat normal bundle in a conformally flat Riemannian manifold is locally holonomic, that is, admits a principal coordinate system. As one of the consequences of this fact, it is shown that the Ribaucour transformation can be used to construct an associated large family of immersions with induced conformal metrics holonomic with respect to the same coordinate system.

We prove the upper-semi-continuity of the Morse index plus nullity of critical points to general conformally invariant Lagrangians in dimension 2 under weak convergence. Precisely we establish that the sum of the Morse indices and the nullity of an arbitrary sequence of weakly converging critical points to a general conformally invariant Lagrangians of maps from an arbitrary closed surface into an arbitrary closed smooth manifold passes to the limit in the following sense : it is asymptotically bounded from above by the sum of the Morse indices plus the nullity of the weak limit and the bubble…
We consider Finsler submanifolds $M^n$ of nonnegative Ricci curvature in a Minkowski space $\mathbb{M}^{n+p}$ which contain a line or whose relative nullity index is positive. For hypersurfaces, submanifolds of codimension two or of dimension two, we prove that the submanifold is a cylinder, under a certain condition on the inertia of the pencil of the second fundamental forms. We give an example of a surface of positive flag curvature in a three-dimensional Minkowski space which is not locally convex.
A well-known result asserts that any isometric immersion with flat normal bundle of a Riemannian manifold with constant sectional curvature into a space form is (at least locally) holonomic. In this note, we show that this conclusion remains valid for the larger class of Einstein manifolds. As an application, when assuming that the index of relative nullity of the immersion is a positive constant we conclude that the submanifold has the structure of a generalized cylinder over a submanifold with flat normal bundle.
Conformally flat submanifolds in spheres and integrable systems
For a submanifold with flat normal bundle in a space form there is a normal orthonormal basis that simultaneously diagonalizes the corresponding Weingarten operators, and at which these operators satisfy a simple Codazzi symmetry. When the second fundamental form has zero index of relative nullity, the image of the Gauss map as defined by Obata is a submanifold of a generalized Grassmannian manifold, with induced metric given by the third fundamental form, corresponding to the sum of the squares of these operators. In this case, we show that the Riemann curvature tensor of the Gauss image is c…
In this paper, we present some new properties for p-biharmonic hypersurfaces in Riemannian manifold. We also characterize the p-biharmonic submanifolds in an Einstein space. We construct a new example of proper p-biharmonic hypersurfaces. We present some open problems.
We first partially extend a theorem of Topping, on the relation between mean curvature and intrinsic diameter, from immersed submanifolds of $\mathbb{R} ^{n} $ to almost everywhere immersed, closed submanifolds of a compact Riemannian manifold. We use this to prove quantization of energy for pseudo-holomorphic closed curves, of all genus, in a compact locally conformally symplectic manifold.
The main result of this paper is an expression of the flag curvature of a submanifold of a Randers-Minkowski space $({\mathscr V},F)$ in terms of invariants related to its Zermelo data $(h,W)$. More precisely, these invariants are the sectional curvature and the second fundamental form of the positive definite scalar product $h$ and some projections of the wind $W$. This expression allows for a promising characterization of submanifolds with scalar flag curvature in terms of Riemannian quantities, which, when a hypersurface is considered, seems quite approachable. As a consequence, we prove th…
New general results of non-existence and rigidity of spacelike submanifolds immersed in a spacetime, whose mean curvature is a time-oriented causal vector field, are given. These results hold for a wide class of spacetimes which includes globally hyperbolic, stationary, conformally stationary and pp-wave spacetimes, among others. Moreover, applications to the Cauchy problem in General Relativity, are presented. Finally, in the case of hypersurfaces, we also obtain significant consequences in Geometrical Analysis, solving new Calabi-Bernstein and Dirichlet problems on a Riemannian manifold.
In this article, we construct a new para-Kähler structure $({\mathcal G},{\mathcal J},Ω)$ in the space of oriented geodesics ${\mathbb L}(M)$ in a non-flat, real space form $M$. We first show that the para-Kähler metric ${\mathcal G}$ is scalar flat and when $M$ is a 3-dimensional real space form, ${\mathcal G}$ is locally conformally flat. Furthermore, we prove that the space of oriented geodesics in hyperbolic $n$-space, equipped with the constructed metric ${\mathcal G}$, is minimally isometric embedded in the tangent bundle of the hyperbolic $n$-space. We then study the submanifold theory,…
In this paper, based on the classical K. Yano's formula, we first establish an optimal integral inequality for compact Lagrangian submanifolds in the complex space forms, which involves the Ricci curvature in the direction $J\vec{H}$ and the norm of the covariant differentiation of the second fundamental form $h$, where $J$ is the almost complex structure and $\vec{H}$ is the mean curvature vector field. Second and analogously, for compact Legendrian submanifolds in the Sasakian space forms with Sasakian structure $(φ,ξ,η,g)$, we also establish an optimal integral inequality involving the Ricc…
We consider the problem of finding on a given Euclidean domain $Ω$ of dimension $n \geq 3$ a complete conformally flat metric whose Schouten curvature $A$ satisfies some equation of the form $f(λ(-A)) = 1$. This generalizes a problem considered by Loewner and Nirenberg for the scalar curvature. We prove the existence and uniqueness of such metric when the boundary $\partialΩ$ is a smooth bounded hypersurface (of codimension one). When $\partialΩ$ contains a compact smooth submanifold $Σ$ of higher codimension with $\partialΩ\setminusΣ$ being compact, we also give a `sharp' condition for the di…
