We compute lower bounds for the Morse index and nullity of constant mean curvature tori of revolution in the three-dimensional unit sphere. In particular, all such tori have index at least five, with index growing at least linearly with respect to the number of the surfaces' bulges, and the index of such tori can be arbitrarily large.
In this work we give a new lower bound on the Morse index for constant mean curvature tori of revolution immersed in the three-sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$, by computing some explicit negative eigenvalues for the corresponding Jacobi operator.
We find various lower and upper bounds for the index of Wente tori that contain a continuous family of planar principal curves. We then prove a result that gives an algorithm for computing the index sharply.
We give three lower bounds for the Morse index of a constant mean curvature torus in Euclidean 3-space in terms of its spectral genus g. The first two lower bounds grow linearly in g and are stronger for smaller values of g, while the third grows quadratically in g but is weaker for smaller values of g.
For all positive integers n we construct a 1-parameter family of conformal tori of revolution in the 3-sphere with n bulges. These tori arise by Darboux transformations of constant mean curvature tori but do not have constant mean curvature in the 3-sphere.
We prove a theorem about elliptic operators with symmetric potential functions, defined on a function space over a closed loop. The result is similar to a known result for a function space on an interval with Dirichlet boundary conditions. These theorems provide accurate numerical methods for finding the spectra of those operators over either type of function space. As an application, we numerically compute the Morse index of constant mean curvature tori of revolution in the unit 3-sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$, confirming that every such torus has Morse index at least five, and showing that other kno…
We use closed geodesics to construct and compute Bott-type Morse homology groups for the energy functional on the loop space of flat $n$-dimensional tori, $n\ge 1$, and Bott-type Floer cohomology groups for their cotangent bundles equipped with the natural symplectic structure. Both objects are isomorpic to the singular homology of the loop space. In an appendix we perturb the equations in order to eliminate degeneracies and to get to a situation with nondegenerate critical points only. The (co)homology groups turn out to be invariant under the perturbation.
The normalized eigenvalues $Λ_i(M,g)$ of the Laplace-Beltrami operator can be considered as functionals on the space of all Riemannian metrics $g$ on a fixed surface $M$. In recent papers several explicit examples of extremal metrics were provided. These metrics are induced by minimal immersions of surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$ or $\mathbb{S}^4$. In the present paper a family of extremal metrics induced by minimal immersions in $\mathbb{S}^5$ is provided.
Let (M,g) be a compact, connected riemannian manifold that is homogeneous, i.e. each pair of points p,q in M have isometric neighborhoods. This paper is a first step towards an understanding of the extent to which it is true that for each "generic" initial condition f0, the solution to the Heat Equation is such that for sufficiently large t, f(.,t) is a minimal Morse function, i.e., a Morse function whose total number of critical points is the minimal possible on M. In this paper we show that this is true for flat tori and round spheres in all dimensions.
This is the second of a series of two papers where we construct embedded Willmore tori with small area constraint in Riemannian three-manifolds. In both papers the construction relies on a Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction, the difficulty being the Möbius degeneration of the tori. In the first paper the construction was performed via minimization, here by Morse Theory; to this aim we establish new geometric expansions of the derivative of the Willmore functional on exponentiated small Clifford tori degenerating, under the action of the Möbius group, to small geodesic spheres with a small handle. By u…
We construct eternal mean curvature flows of tori in perturbations of the standard unit sphere $\Bbb{S}^3$. This has applications to the study of the Morse homologies of area functionals over the space of embedded tori in $\Bbb{S}^3$.
A new approach is proposed for study structure and properties of the total squared mean curvature $W$ of surfaces in ${\bf R}^3$. It is based on the generalized Weierstrass formulae for inducing surfaces. The quantity $W$ (Willmore functional) is shown to be invariant under the modified Novikov--Veselov hierarchy of integrable flows. The $1+1$--dimensional case and, in particular, Willmore tori of revolution, are studied in details. The Willmore conjecture is proved for the mKDV--invariant Willmore tori.
Generalizing earlier work by Ros in ambient dimension three, we prove an affine lower bound for the Morse index of closed minimal hypersurfaces inside a flat torus in terms of their first Betti number (with purely dimensional coefficients).
We introduce the moduli space of spectral curves of constant mean curvature (\cmc\hspace{-5pt}) cylinders of finite type in the round unit 3-sphere. The subset of spectral curves of mean-convex Alexandrov embedded cylinders is explicitly determined using a combination of integrable systems and geometric analysis techniques. We prove that these cylinders are surfaces of revolution. As a consequence all mean-convex Alexandrov embedded {\sc{cmc}} tori in the 3-sphere are surfaces of revolution.
There are not so many kinds of surface of revolution whose cut locus structure have been determined, although the cut locus structures of very familiar surfaces of revolution (in Euclidean space) such as ellipsoids, 2-sheeted hyperboloids, paraboloids, and tori are now known. Except for tori, the known cut locus structures are very simple, i.e., a single point or an arc. In this article, a new family {M_n}_n of 2-spheres of revolution with simple cut locus structure is introduced. This family is also new in the sense that the number of points on each meridian which assume a local minimum or ma…
In this work we classify the stable regions (second order minima of perimeter under an area constraint) in tori of revolution with piecewise continuous decreasing Gauss curvature from the longest parallel and with a horizontal symmetry. Some applications to isoperimetric problems are also given.
On any surface we give an example of a metric that contains simple closed geodesics with arbitrary high Morse index. Similarly, on any 3-manifold we give an example of a metric that contains embedded minimal tori with arbitrary high Morse index. Previously no such examples were known. We also discuss whether or not such bounds should hold for a generic metric and why bumpy does not seem to be the right generic notion. Finally, we mention briefly what such bounds might be used for.
We flow a hypersurface in Euclidean space by mean curvature flow with a Neumann boundary condition, where the boundary manifold is any torus of revolution. If we impose the conditions that the initial manifold is compatible and does not contain the rotational vector field in its tangent space, then mean curvature flow exists for all time and converges to a flat cross-section as $t \rightarrow \infty$.
Following similar results in arXiv:1301.5934 for flat tori and round spheres, in this paper is presented a proof of the fact that, for "arbitrary" initial conditions $f_0$, the solution $f_t$ at time $t$ of the heat equation on real or complex projective spaces eventually becomes (and remains) a minimal Morse function. Furthermore, it is shown that the solution becomes stable.
We show that one-sided Alexandrov embedded constant mean curvature cylinders of finite type in the 3-sphere are surfaces of revolution. This confirms a conjecture by Pinkall and Sterling that the only embedded constant mean curvature tori in the 3-sphere are rotational.
In this article we study eternal solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation in the 3-sphere, in view of the connection between the gradient flow of the associated energy functional, and the mean curvature flow. We construct eternal integral Brakke flows that connect Clifford tori to equatorial spheres, and study a family of such flows, in particular their symmetry properties. Our approach is based on the realization of Brakke's motion by mean curvature as a singular limit of Allen-Cahn gradient flows, as studied by Ilmanen, and Tonegawa, and it uses the classification of ancient gradient flows in sp…
