We consider a pivotal monoidal functor whose domain is a modular tensor category (MTC). We show that the trace of such a functor naturally extends to a representation of the corresponding tube category. As irreducible representations of the tube category are indexed by pairs of simple objects in the underlying MTC, the simple multiplicities of this representation form a candidate modular invariant matrix. In general, this matrix will not be modular invariant, however it will always commute with the T-matrix. Furthermore, under certain additional conditions on the original functor, it is shown that the corresponding representation of the tube category is a haploid, symmetric, commutative Frobenius algebra. Such algebras are known to be connected to modular invariants, in particular a result of Kong and Runkel implies that the matrix of simple multiplicities commutes with the S-matrix if and only if the dimension of the algebra is equal to the dimension of the underlying MTC. Finally, we apply these techniques to certain pivotal monoidal functors arising from module categories over the Temperley-Lieb category and the associated MTC. This provides a novel explanation of the A-D-E pattern appearing in the classification of $ A_1^{(1)} $ modular invariants.
We apply the notion of relative adjoint functor to generalise closed monoidal categories. We define representations in such categories and give their relation with left actions of monoids. The translation of these representations under lax monoidal functors is investigated. We introduce tensor product of representations of bimonoids as a functorial binary operation and show how symmetric lax monoidal functors act on this product. Finally we apply the general theory to classical and quantum representations.
We point out that for Yetter's deformational Hochschild complex of a monoidal functor between abelian monoidal categories the Gerstenhaber-Voronov type operations can be defined making it a strong homotopy Gerstenhaber algebra. This encodes deformation theory of monoidal functors in an analogical way as deformation theory of associative algebras is described by the strong homotopy Gerstenhaber algebra structure on the corresponding Hochschild cochains. We describe a quasi-classical limit of deformations of a symmetric monoidal functor in terms of Poisson type structure.
The analogy between Yetter's deformation theory form (lax) monoidal functors and Gerstenahaber's deformation theory for associative algebras is solidified by shown that under reasonable conditions the category of functors with an action of a lax monoidal functor is abelian, that an analogue of the Hochschild cohomology of an algebra with coefficients in a bimodule exists for monoidal functors, and is given by right derived functors. The deformation cohmology of a monoidal natural transformation is shown to be a special case.
This article represents a preliminary attempt to link Kan extensions, and some of their further developments, to Fourier theory and quantum algebra through *-autonomous monoidal categories and related structures.
An object $P$ in a monoidal category $\mathcal{C}$ is called pivotal if its left dual and right dual objects are isomorphic. Given such an object and a choice of dual $Q$, we construct the category $\mathcal{C}(P,Q)$, of objects which intertwine with $P$ and $Q$ in a compatible manner. We show that this category lifts the monoidal structure of $\mathcal{C}$ and the closed structure of $\mathcal{C}$, when $\mathcal{C}$ is closed. If $\mathcal{C}$ has suitable colimits we show that $\mathcal{C}(P,Q)$ is monadic and thereby construct a family of Hopf monads on arbitrary closed monoidal categories…
What are the fiber functors on small additive monoidal categories C which are not abelian? We give an answer which leads to a new Tannaka duality theorem for bialgebroids generalizing earlier results by Phung Ho Hai. The construction reveals a sheaf theoretic interpretation in so far as the reconstructed bialgebroid H has comodule category equivalent to the category of T-sheaves w.r.t. a monoidal Grothendieck topology on C. We also prove an existence theorem for fiber functors on small additive monoidal categories with bounded fusion and weak kernels. For certain autonomous categories a genera…
Every monoidal functor G: C --> M has a canonical factorization through the category of bimodules over some monoid R in M such that the factor U: C -->_R M_R is strongly unital. Using this result and the characterization of the forgetful functors M_A -->_R M_R of bialgebroids A over R given by Schauenburg together with their bimonad description given by the author recently here we characterize the "long" forgetful functors M_A -->_R M_R --> M of both bialgebroids and weak bialgebras.
Here we describe three straightforward examples of what was called a graphic Fourier transformation in [4]. At least two of these examples may be viewed simply as monoidal comonads on suitable monoidal closed functor categories, but the third example, which involves "centres" of monoidal closed functor categories, is generally not comonadic. For the first two examples (i.e., association schemes and RCFT's), a more elaborate "probicategory" set-up was envisaged in an earlier version of this note, but many readers missed the main point so it is simplified (hopefully) below.
Let $U:\mathcal{C}\rightarrow\mathcal{D}$ be a strong monoidal functor between abelian monoidal categories admitting a right adjoint $R$, such that $R$ is exact, faithful and the adjunction $U\dashv R$ is coHopf. Building on the work of Balan, we show that $R$ is separable (resp., special) Frobenius monoidal if and only if $R(\mathbb{1}_{\mathcal{D}})$ is a separable (resp., special) Frobenius algebra in $\mathcal{C}$. If further, $\mathcal{C},\mathcal{D}$ are pivotal (resp., ribbon) categories and $U$ is a pivotal (resp., braided pivotal) functor, then $R$ is a pivotal (resp., ribbon) functor…
Separable Frobenius monoidal functors were defined and studied under that name by Szlachanyi and by Day and Pastro, and in a more general context by Cockett and Seely. Our purpose here is to develop their theory in a very precise sense. We determine what kinds of equations in monoidal categories they preserve. For example we show they preserve lax (meaning not necessarily invertible) Yang-Baxter operators, weak Yang-Baxter operators in the sense of Alonso Alvarez et al., and (in the braided case) weak bimonoids in the sense of Pastro and Street. In fact, we characterize which monoidal expressi…
We introduce the notion of a monoidal category enriched in a braided monoidal category $\mathcal V$. We set up the basic theory, and prove a classification result in terms of braided oplax monoidal functors to the Drinfeld center of some monoidal category $\mathcal T$. Even the basic theory is interesting; it shares many characteristics with the theory of monoidal categories enriched in a symmetric monoidal category, but lacks some features. Of particular note, there is no cartesian product of braided-enriched categories, and the natural transformations do not form a 2-category, but rather sat…
We show that the (co)endomorphism algebra of a sufficiently separable "fibre" functor into Vect_k, for k a field of characteristic 0, has the structure of what we call a "unital" von Neumann core in Vect_k. For Vect_k, this particular notion of algebra is weaker than that of a Hopf algebra, although the corresponding concept in Set is again that of a group.
Braided deformations of (symmetric) monoidal categories are related to Vassiliev theory by a direct generalization of well-known results relating "quantum" knot invariants to Vassiliev invariants. The deformation theory of braidings is subsumed by the deformation theory of monoidal functors, which proves surprisingly rich: the deformation complex of a monoidal functor has the same structure as the deformation complex of an algebra, including a pre-Lie structure, from which it is see that the problem of deforming monoidal functors (including braidings) is purely cohomological in nature.
We define higher Frobenius-Schur indicators for objects in linear pivotal monoidal categories. We prove that they are category invariants, and take values in the cyclotomic integers. We also define a family of natural endomorphisms of the identity endofunctor on a $k$-linear semisimple rigid monoidal category, which we call the Frobenius-Schur endomorphisms. For a $k$-linear semisimple pivotal monoidal category -- where both notions are defined --, the Frobenius-Schur indicators can be computed as traces of the Frobenius-Schur endomorphisms.
This paper is about skew monoidal tensored V-categories (= skew monoidal hommed V-actegories) and their categories of modules. A module over <M,*,R> is an algebra for the monad T = R * _ on M. We study in detail the skew monoidal structure of M^T and construct a skew monoidal forgetful functor from M^T to the category of E-objects in M where E=M(R,R) is the endomorphism monoid of the unit object R. Then we give conditions for the forgetful functor to be strong monoidal and for the category M^T of modules to be monoidal. In formulating these conditions a notion of `self-cocomplete' subcategorie…
Monoidal functors U:C --> M with left adjoints determine, in a universal way, monoids T in the category of oplax monoidal endofunctors on M. Such monads will be called bimonads. Treating bimonads as abstract "quantum groupoids" we derive Tannaka duality between left adjointable monoidal functors and bimonads. Bialgebroids, i.e., Takeuchi's x_R-bialgebras, appear as the special case when T has also a right adjoint. Street's 2-category of monads then leads to a natural definition of the 2-category of bialgebroids.
We construct an equivalence between the 2-categories VMonCat of rigid V-monoidal categories for a braided monoidal category V and VModTens of oplax braided functors from V into the Drinfeld centers of ordinary rigid monoidal categories. The 1-cells in each are the respective lax monoidal functors, and the 2-cells are the respective monoidal natural transformations. Our proof also gives an equivalence in the case that we consider only strong monoidal 1-cells on both sides. The 2-categories VMonCat and VModTens have G-graded analogues. We also get an equivalence of 2-categories between G-extensi…
We define notions of pivotal and ribbon objects in a monoidal category. These constructions give pivotal or ribbon monoidal categories from a monoidal category which is not necessarily with duals. We apply this construction to the braided monoidal category of Yetter--Drinfeld modules over a Hopf algebra. This gives rise to the notion of ribbon Yetter--Drinfeld modules over a Hopf algebra, which form ribbon categories. This gives an invariant of tangles.
A family of invariants of smooth, oriented four-dimensional manifolds is defined via handle decompositions and the Kirby calculus of framed link diagrams. The invariants are parameterised by a pivotal functor from a spherical fusion category into a ribbon fusion category. A state sum formula for the invariant is constructed via the chain-mail procedure, so a large class of topological state sum models can be expressed as link invariants. Most prominently, the Crane-Yetter state sum over an arbitrary ribbon fusion category is recovered, including the nonmodular case. It is shown that the Crane-…
We introduce a variant on the graphical calculus of Cockett and Seely for monoidal functors and illustrate it with a discussion of Tannaka reconstruction, some of which is known and some of which is new. The new portion is: given a separable Frobenius functor F: A --> B from a monoidal category A to a suitably complete or cocomplete braided autonomous category B, the usual formula for Tannaka reconstruction gives a weak bialgebra in B; if, moreover, A is autonomous, this weak bialgebra is in fact a weak Hopf algebra.
Monoidal categories enriched in a braided monoidal category $\mathcal{V}$ are classified by braided oplax monoidal functors from $\mathcal{V}$ to the Drinfeld centers of ordinary monoidal categories. In this article, we prove that this classifying functor is strongly monoidal if and only if the original $\mathcal{V}$-monoidal category is tensored over $\mathcal{V}$. We then define a completion operation which produces a tensored $\mathcal{V}$-monoidal category $\overline{\mathcal{C}}$ from an arbitrary $\mathcal{V}$-monoidal category $\mathcal{C}$, and we determine many equivalent conditions w…
As shown in a previous paper by the same authors, the theory of Galois functors provides a categorical framework for the characterisation of bimonads on any category as Hopf monads and also for the characterisation of opmonoidal monads on monoidal categories as right Hopf monads in the sense of Bruguieres and Virelizier. Hereby the central part is to describe conditions under which a comparison functor between the base category and the category of Hopf modules becomes an equivalence (Fundamental Theorem). For monoidal categories, Aguiar and Chase extended the setting by replacing the base cate…
Let $F, G: \mathcal{I} \to \mathcal{C}$ be strong monoidal functors from a skeletally small monoidal category $\mathcal{I}$ to a tensor category $\mathcal{C}$ over an algebraically closed field $k$. The set $Nat(F, G)$ of natural transformations $F \to G$ is naturally a vector space over $k$. We show that the set $Nat_\otimes(F, G)$ of monoidal natural transformations $F \to G$ is linearly independent as a subset of $Nat(F, G)$. As a corollary, we can show that the group of monoidal natural automorphisms on the identity functor on a finite tensor category is finite. We can also show that the s…
Let $U$ be a strong monoidal functor between monoidal categories. If it has both a left adjoint $L$ and a right adjoint $R$, we show that the pair $(R,L)$ is a linearly distributive functor and $(U,U)\dashv (R,L)$ is a linearly distributive adjunction, if and only if $L\dashv U$ is a Hopf adjunction and $U\dashv R$ is a coHopf adjunction. We give sufficient conditions for a strong monoidal $U$ which is part of a (left) Hopf adjunction $L\dashv U$, to have as right adjoint a twisted version of the left adjoint $L$. In particular, the resulting adjunction will be (left) coHopf. One step further,…
The notion of the center of an algebra over a field k has a far reaching generalization to algebras in monoidal categories. The center then lives in the monoidal center of the original category. This generalization plays an important role in the study of bulk-boundary duality of rational conformal field theories. In this paper, we study functorial properties of the center. We show that it gives rise to a 2-functor from the bicategory of semisimple indecomposable module categories over a fusion category to the bicategory of commutative algebras in the monoidal center of this fusion category. Mo…
We introduce the category of set-theoretic representations of a matched pair of groupoids. This is a monoidal category endowed with a monoidal functor to the category of quivers over the common base of the groupoids in the matched pair (the forgetful functor). We study monoidal functors between two such categories of representations which preserve the forgetful functor. We show that the centralizer of such a monoidal functor is the category of representations of a new matched pair, which we construct explicitly. We introduce the notions of {\em double} of a matched pair of groupoids and {\em g…
We define a notion of category enriched over an oplax monoidal category $V$, extending the usual definition of category enriched over a monoidal category. Even though oplax monoidal structures involve infinitely many functors $V^n\to V$, defining categories enriched over $V$ only requires the lower arity maps $(n \leq 3)$, similarly to the monoidal case. The focal point of the enrichment theory shifts, in the oplax case, from the notion of $V$-category (given by collections of objects and hom-objects together with composition and unit maps) to the one of categories enriched over $V$ (genuine c…
We study the biclosedness of the monoidal categories of modules and comodules over a (left or right) Hopf algebroid, along with the bimodule category centres of the respective opposite categories and a corresponding categorical equivalence to anti Yetter-Drinfel'd contramodules and anti Yetter-Drinfel'd modules, respectively. This is directly connected to the existence of a trace functor on the monoidal categories of modules and comodules in question, which in turn allows to recover (or define) cyclic operators enabling cyclic cohomology.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of the pivotal cover $\mathcal{C}^{\mathsf{piv}}$ of a left rigid monoidal category $\mathcal{C}$ to develop a theoretical foundation for the theory of Frobenius-Schur (FS) indicators in "non-pivotal" settings. For an object $\mathbf{V} \in \mathcal{C}^{\mathsf{piv}}$, the $(n, r)$-th FS indicator $ν_{n, r}(\mathbf{V})$ is defined by generalizing that of an object of a pivotal monoidal category. This notion gives a categorical viewpoint to some recent results on generalizations of FS indicators. Based on our framework, we also study the FS indicators of t…
We study the basic monoidal properties of the category of Hopf modules for a coquasi Hopf algebra. In particular we discuss the so called fundamental theorem that establishes a monoidal equivalence between the category of comodules and the category of Hopf modules. We present a categorical proof of Radford's $S^4$ formula for the case of a finite dimensional coquasi Hopf algebra, by establishing a monoidal isomorphism between certain double dual functors.
This article is devoted to the investigation of the deformation (twisting) of monoidal structures, such as the associativity constraint of the monoidal category and the monoidal structure of monoidal functor. The sets of twistings have a (non-abelian) c ohomological nature. Using this fact the maps from the sets of twistings to some cohomology groups (Hochschild cohomology of K-theory) are constructed. The examples of monoidal categories of bimodules over some algebra, modules and comodules over bialgeb ra are examined. We specially concentrate on the case of free tensor category.
For a monoidal $\infty$-category $\mathcal{M}$ with colimits, we study colimits of $\mathcal{M}$-functors $\mathcal{A}\to\mathcal{B}$ where $\mathcal{B}$ is left-tensored over $\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathcal{A}$ is an $\mathcal{M}$-enriched category. We prove that the enriched Yoneda embedding $Y:\mathcal{A}\to P_{\mathcal{M}}(\mathcal{A})$ yields a universal $\mathcal{M}$-functor and, in the case when $\mathcal{A}$ has a certain monoidal structure, the category of enriched presheaves $P_{\mathcal{M}}(\mathcal{A})$ inherits the same monoidal structure.
We define a category $v\mathcal{T}$ of tangles diagrams drawn on surfaces with boundaries. On the one hand we show that there is a natural functor from the category of virtual tangles to $v\mathcal{T}$ which induces an equivalence of categories. On the other hand, we show that $v\mathcal{T}$ is universal among ribbon categories equipped with a strong monoidal functor to a symmetric monoidal category. This is a generalization of the Shum-Reshetikhin-Turaev theorem characterizing the category of ordinary tangles as the free ribbon category. This gives a straightforward proof that all quantum inv…
By a theorem of Majid, every monoidal category with a neutral quasi-monoidal functor to finitely-generated and projective $\Bbbk$-modules gives rise to a coquasi-bialgebra. We prove that if the category is also rigid, then the associated coquasi-bialgebra admits a preantipode, providing in this way an analogue for coquasi-bialgebras of Ulbrich's reconstruction theorem for Hopf algebras. When $\Bbbk$ is field, this allows us to characterize coquasi-Hopf algebras as well in terms of rigidity of finite-dimensional corepresentations.
A braid representation is a monoidal functor from the braid category $\mathsf{B}$, for example given by a solution to the constant Yang-Baxter equation. Given a monoidal category $\mathsf{C}$ with $ob(\mathsf{C})=\mathbb{N}$, a rank-$N$ charge-conserving representation (or spin-chain representation) is a strict monoidal functor $F$ from $\mathsf{C}$ to the category $\mathrm{Match}^N$ of rank-$N$ charge-conserving matrices that is natural in the sense that $F(1)=1$}. In this work we construct all spin-chain braid representations, and classify up to suitable notions of isomorphism.
We present a general framework for TQFT and related constructions using the language of monoidal categories. We construct a topological category C and an algebraic category D, both monoidal, and a TQFT functor is then defined as a certain type of monoidal functor from C to D. In contrast with the cobordism approach, this formulation of TQFT is closer in spirit to the classical functors of algebraic topology, like homology. The fundamental operation of gluing is incorporated at the level of the morphisms in the topological category through the notion of a gluing morphism, which we define. It al…
Given a rigid C*-tensor category C with simple unit and a probability measure $μ$ on the set of isomorphism classes of its simple objects, we define the Poisson boundary of $(C,μ)$. This is a new C*-tensor category P, generally with nonsimple unit, together with a unitary tensor functor $Π: C \to P$. Our main result is that if P has simple unit (which is a condition on some classical random walk), then $Π$ is a universal unitary tensor functor defining the amenable dimension function on C. Corollaries of this theorem unify various results in the literature on amenability of C*-tensor categorie…
We develop the Tannaka-Krein duality for monoidal functors with target in the categories of bimodules over a ring. The $\coend$ of such a functor turns out to be a Hopf algebroid over this ring. Using the result of a previous paper we characterize a small abelian, locally finite rigid monoidal category as the category of rigid comodules over a transitive Hopf algebroid.
