We define a category $v\mathcal{T}$ of tangles diagrams drawn on surfaces with boundaries. On the one hand we show that there is a natural functor from the category of virtual tangles to $v\mathcal{T}$ which induces an equivalence of categories. On the other hand, we show that $v\mathcal{T}$ is universal among ribbon categories equipped with a strong monoidal functor to a symmetric monoidal category. This is a generalization of the Shum-Reshetikhin-Turaev theorem characterizing the category of ordinary tangles as the free ribbon category. This gives a straightforward proof that all quantum invariants of links extends to framed oriented virtual links. This also provides a clear explanation of the relation between virtual tangles and Etingof-Kazhdan formalism suggested by Bar-Natan. We prove a similar statement for virtual braids, and discuss the relation between our category and knotted trivalent graphs.
We construct a family of rings. To a plane diagram of a tangle we associate a complex of bimodules over these rings. Chain homotopy equivalence class of this complex is an invariant of the tangle. On the level of Grothendieck groups this invariant descends to the Kauffman bracket of the tangle. When the tangle is a link, the invariant specializes to the bigraded cohomology theory introduced in our earlier work.
A bottom tangle is a tangle in a cube consisting only of arc components, each of which has the two endpoints on the bottom line of the cube, placed next to each other. We introduce a subcategory B of the category of framed, oriented tangles, which acts on the set of bottom tangles. We give a finite set of generators of B, which provides an especially convenient way to generate all the bottom tangles, and hence all the framed, oriented links, via closure. We also define a kind of "braided Hopf algebra action" on the set of bottom tangles. Using the universal invariant of bottom tangles associat…
Using an extension of the Kontsevich integral to tangles in handlebodies similar to a construction given by Andersen, Mattes and Reshetikhin, we construct a functor $Z:\mathcal{B}\to \widehat{\mathbb{A}}$, where $\mathcal{B}$ is the category of bottom tangles in handlebodies and $\widehat{\mathbb{A}}$ is the degree-completion of the category $\mathbb{A}$ of Jacobi diagrams in handlebodies. As a symmetric monoidal linear category, $\mathbb{A}$ is the linear PROP governing "Casimir Hopf algebras", which are cocommutative Hopf algebras equipped with a primitive invariant symmetric 2-tensor. The f…
The universal Vassiliev-Kontsevich invariant is a functor from the category of tangles to a certain graded category of chord diagrams, compatible with the Vassiliev filtration and whose associated graded is an isomorphism. The Vassiliev filtration has a natural extension to tangles in any thickened surface $M\times I$ but the corresponding category of diagrams lacks some finiteness properties which are essential to the above construction. We suggest to overcome this obstruction by studying families of Vassiliev invariants which, roughly, are associated to finite coverings of $M$. In the case $…
Fiber functors on Temperley-Lieb categories are investigated with the help of classification results on non-degenerate bilinear forms. The case of unitary fiber functors is also considered.
What are the fiber functors on small additive monoidal categories C which are not abelian? We give an answer which leads to a new Tannaka duality theorem for bialgebroids generalizing earlier results by Phung Ho Hai. The construction reveals a sheaf theoretic interpretation in so far as the reconstructed bialgebroid H has comodule category equivalent to the category of T-sheaves w.r.t. a monoidal Grothendieck topology on C. We also prove an existence theorem for fiber functors on small additive monoidal categories with bounded fusion and weak kernels. For certain autonomous categories a genera…
We construct a functor valued invariant of oriented tangles on certain singular blocks of category O. Parabolic subcategories of these blocks categorify tensor products of various fundamental sl(k) representations. Projective functors restricted to these categories give rise to a functorial action of the Lie algebra. On the derived category, Zuckerman functors categorify sl(k)- homomorphisms. Cones of natural transformations between the identity functor and Zuckerman functors are assigned to crossings and this assignment satisfies the appropriate relations. On the Grothendieck group, the funct…
A handlebody-knot is a handlebody embedded in the 3-sphere. We establish a uniform method to construct invariants for handlebody-links. We introduce the category $\mathcal{T}$ of handlebody-tangles and present it by generators and relations. The result tells us that every functor on $\mathcal{T}$ that gives rise to invariants is derived from what we call a quantum-commutative quantum-symmetric algebra in the target category. The example of such algebras of our main concern is finite-dimensional unimodular Hopf algebras. We investigate how those Hopf algebras give rise to handlebody-knot invari…
We develop a theory of Frobenius functors for symmetric tensor categories (STC) $\mathcal{C}$ over a field $\bf k$ of characteristic $p$, and give its applications to classification of such categories. Namely, we define a twisted-linear symmetric monoidal functor $F: \mathcal{C}\to \mathcal{C}\boxtimes {\rm Ver}_p$, where ${\rm Ver}_p$ is the Verlinde category (the semisimplification of ${\rm Rep}_{\bf k}(\mathbb{Z}/p)$). This generalizes the usual Frobenius twist functor in modular representation theory and also one defined in arXiv:1503.01492, where it is used to show that if $\mathcal{C}$ i…
Triangle presentations are combinatorial structures on finite projective geometries which characterize groups acting simply transitively on the vertices of a locally finite building of type $\tilde{\text{A}}_{n-1}$ ($n\ge3$). From a type $\tilde{\text{A}}_{n-1}$ triangle presentation on a geometry of order $q$, we construct a fiber functor on the diagrammatic monoidal category $\text{Web}(\text{SL}^{-}_{n})$ over any field $\mathbb{k}$ with characteristic $p\ge n-1$ such that $q \equiv 1$ mod $p$. When $\mathbb{k}$ is algebraically closed and $n$ odd, this gives new fiber functors on the categ…
The theory of integral, or Fourier-Mukai, transforms between derived categories of sheaves is a well established tool in noncommutative algebraic geometry. General "representation theorems" identify all reasonable linear functors between categories of perfect complexes (or their "large" version, quasi-coherent sheaves) on schemes and stacks over some fixed base with integral kernels in the form of sheaves (of the same nature) on the fiber product. However, for many applications in mirror symmetry and geometric representation theory one is interested instead in the bounded derived category of c…
Categorification is the process of finding category-theoretic analogs of set-theoretic concepts by replacing sets with categories, functions with functors, and equations between functions by natural isomorphisms between functors, which in turn should satisfy certain equations of their own, called `coherence laws'. Iterating this process requires a theory of `n-categories', algebraic structures having objects, morphisms between objects, 2-morphisms between morphisms and so on up to n-morphisms. After a brief introduction to n-categories and their relation to homotopy theory, we discuss algebrai…
A fundamental theorem of P. Deligne (2002) states that a pre-Tannakian category over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero admits a fiber functor to the category of supervector spaces (i.e., is the representation category of an affine proalgebraic supergroup) if and only if it has moderate growth (i.e., the lengths of tensor powers of an object grow at most exponentially). In this paper we prove a characteristic p version of this theorem. Namely we show that a pre-Tannakian category over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0 admits a fiber functor into the Verlinde…
