We introduce a class of decorated abstract graphs, that we call XC-tangles, that provides a very convenient framework to study quantum invariants of tangles and virtual tangles. These can be viewed as a far-reaching generalisation of rotational tangle diagrams for (virtual) upwards tangles, and constitute the topological analogue of XC-algebras, the minimum algebraic structure needed to construct an knot isotopy invariant following the construction of Lawrence and Lee. XC-tangles admit a very natural description in terms of the so-called XC-Gauss diagrams, and this equivalence lifts the well-known equivalence between virtual upwards tangles and upwards Gauss diagrams. For every XC-algebra $A$, there is a naturally defined strict monoidal full functor $Z_A: \mathcal{T}^{\mathrm{XC}} \rightarrow v\mathcal{E}(A)$ from the category of XC-tangles to the "virtual category of elements of $A$". When $A$ is the endomorphism algebra of a finite-dimensional representation of a ribbon Hopf algebra, this functor can be viewed as an extension of the corresponding Reshetikhin-Turaev functor. Lastly, we also initiate the study of a theory of finite type invariants for one-component XC-tangles that lifts that for virtual long knots.
The universal sl_2 invariant of bottom tangles has a universality property for the colored Jones polynomial of links. Habiro conjectured that the universal sl_2 invariant of boundary bottom tangles takes values in certain subalgebras of the completed tensor powers of the quantized enveloping algebra U_h(sl_2) of the Lie algebra sl_2. In the present paper, we prove an improved version of Habiro's conjecture. As an application, we prove a divisibility property of the colored Jones polynomial of boundary links.
A bottom tangle is a tangle in a cube consisting of arc components whose boundary points are on a line in the bottom square of the cube. A ribbon bottom tangle is a bottom tangle whose closure is a ribbon link. For every n-component ribbon bottom tangle T, we prove that the universal invariant J_T of T associated to the quantized enveloping algebra U_h(sl_2) of the Lie algebra sl_2 is contained in a certain Z[q,q^{-1}]-subalgebra of the n-fold completed tensor power of U_h(sl_2). This result is applied to the colored Jones polynomial of ribbon links.
A link L is called Brunnian if every proper sublink of L is trivial. Similarly, a bottom tangle T is called Brunnian if every proper subtangle of T is trivial. In this paper, we give a small subalgebra of the n-fold completed tensor power of U_h(sl_2) in which the universal sl_2 invariant of n-component Brunnian bottom tangles takes values. As an application, we give a divisibility property of the colored Jones polynomial of Brunnian links.
We study generalizations of a classical link invariant -- the multivariable Alexander polynomial -- to tangles. The starting point is Archibald's tMVA invariant for virtual tangles which lives in the setting of circuit algebras, and whose target space has dimension that is exponential in the number of strands. Using the Hodge star map and restricting to tangles without closed components, we define a reduction of the tMVA to an invariant "rMVA" which is valued in matrices with Laurent polynomial entries, and so has a much more compact target space. We show the rMVA has the structure of a metamo…
We consider an algebra of (classical or virtual) tangles over an ordered circuit operad and introduce Conway-type invariants of tangles which respect this algebraic structure. The resulting invariants contain both the coefficients of the Conway polynomial and the Milnor's mu-invariants of string links as partial cases. The extension of the Conway polynomial to virtual tangles satisfies the usual Conway skein relation and its coefficients are GPV finite type invariants. As a by-product, we also obtain a simple representation of the braid group which gives the Conway polynomial as a certain twis…
We extend Milnor's mu-invariants of link homotopy to ordered (classical or virtual) tangles. Simple combinatorial formulas for mu-invariants are given in terms of counting trees in Gauss diagrams. Invariance under Reidemeister moves corresponds to axioms of Loday's diassociative algebra. The relation of tangles to diassociative algebras is formulated in terms of a morphism of corresponding operads.
A bottom tangle is a tangle in a cube consisting only of arc components, each of which has the two endpoints on the bottom line of the cube, placed next to each other. We introduce a subcategory B of the category of framed, oriented tangles, which acts on the set of bottom tangles. We give a finite set of generators of B, which provides an especially convenient way to generate all the bottom tangles, and hence all the framed, oriented links, via closure. We also define a kind of "braided Hopf algebra action" on the set of bottom tangles. Using the universal invariant of bottom tangles associat…
We use categorical skew Howe duality to find recursion rules that compute categorified sl(N) invariants of rational tangles colored by exterior powers of the standard representation. Further, we offer a geometric interpretation of these rules which suggests a connection to Floer theory. Along the way we make progress towards two conjectures about the colored HOMFLY homology of rational links.
The involutory birack counting invariant is an integer-valued invariant of unoriented tangles defined by counting homomorphisms from the fundamental involutory birack of the tangle to a finite involutory birack over a set of framings modulo the birack rank of the labeling birack. In this first of an anticipated series of several papers, we enhance the involutory birack counting invariant with quantum weights, which may be understood as tangle functors of involutory birack-labeled unoriented tangles.
The universal Vassiliev-Kontsevich invariant is a functor from the category of tangles to a certain graded category of chord diagrams, compatible with the Vassiliev filtration and whose associated graded is an isomorphism. The Vassiliev filtration has a natural extension to tangles in any thickened surface $M\times I$ but the corresponding category of diagrams lacks some finiteness properties which are essential to the above construction. We suggest to overcome this obstruction by studying families of Vassiliev invariants which, roughly, are associated to finite coverings of $M$. In the case $…
An enhanced trivalent tangle is a trivalent tangle with some of its edges labeled. We use enhanced trivalent tangles and classical knot theory to provide a recipe for constructing invariants for trivalent tangles, and in particular, for knotted trivalent graphs. Our method also yields invariants of, what we refer to as, enhanced handlebody-tangles and enhanced handlebody-links.
Given a pointed 4-ended tangle $T \subset D^3$, there are two Khovanov theoretic tangle invariants, $\unicode{1044}_1(T)$ from [arXiv:1910.1458] and $L_T$ from [arXiv:1808.06957], which are twisted complexes over the Fukaya category of the boundary 4-punctured sphere $(S^2,4\text{pt})=\partial (D^3, T)$. We prove that these two invariants are the same.
To study embeddings of tangles in knots, we use quandle cocycle invariants. Computations are carried out for the tables of knots and tangles, to investigate which tangles may or may not embed in knots in the tables.
We construct a categorification of the quantum sl_3 projectors, the sl_3 analog of the Jones-Wenzl projectors, as the stable limit of the complexes assigned to k-twist torus braids (as k goes to infinity) in a suitably shifted version of Morrison and Nieh's geometric formulation of sl_3 link homology (math.GT/0612754). We use these projectors to give a categorification of the sl_3 Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant of framed tangles.
We give a new construction of the one-variable Alexander polynomial of an oriented knot or link, and show that it generalizes to a vector valued invariant of oriented tangles.
We employ the sl(2) foam cohomology to define a cohomology theory for oriented framed tangles whose components are labelled by irreducible representations of U_q(sl(2)). We show that the corresponding colored invariants of tangles can be assembled into invariants of bigger tangles. For the case of knots and links, the corresponding theory is a categorification of the colored Jones polynomial, and provides a tool for efficient computations of the resulting colored invariant of knots and links. Our theory is defined over the Gaussian integers Z[i] (and more generally over Z[i][a,h], where a,h ar…
Recently, Bigelow defined a diagrammatic method for calculating the Alexander polynomial of a knot or link by resolving crossings in a planar algebra. I will present my multivariate version of Bigelow's calculation. The advantage to my algorithm is that it generalizes to a multivariate tangle invariant up to Reidemeister I. I will conclude with a possible link to subfactor planar algebras from the work of Jones and Penneys.
New obstructions for embedding one compact oriented 3-manifold in another are given. A theorem of D. Krebes concerning 4-tangles embedded in links arises as a special case. Algebraic and skein-theoretic generalizations for 2n-tangles provide invariants that persist in the corresponding invariants of links in which they embed. An example is given of a virtual 4-tangle for which Krebes's theorem does not hold.
In this paper we define a new state sum based on the regions defined by tangles on a surface which is an oriented closed surface with a finite number of open holes drilled. From this state sum we obtain an invariant of regular isotopy for the tangles named $u$-invariant. The values of the $u$-invariant are in $\mathbb{Z}[u]$, where $u$ is a primitive fifth root of the unity. Various basic properties of the invariant are proved and discussed. It can be specialized to invariants of framed links in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Its categoric aspect is emphasized: composition of tangles in surfaces correspond t…
Based on the Kauffman bracket at $A=e^{i π/4}$, we defined an invariant for a special type of $n$-punctured ball tangles. The invariant $F^n$ takes values in the set $PM_{2\times2^n}(\mathbb Z)$ of $2\times 2^n$ matrices over $\mathbb Z$ modulo the scalar multiplication of $\pm1$. We provide the formula to compute the invariant of the $k_1 + ... + k_n$-punctured ball tangle composed of given $n,k_1,...,k_n$-punctured ball tangles. Also, we define the horizontal and the vertical connect sums of punctured ball tangles and provide the formulas for their invariants from those of given punctured ba…
The notion of a pseudoknot is defined as an equivalence class of knot diagrams that may be missing some crossing information. We provide here a topological invariant schema for pseudoknots and their relatives, 4-valent rigid vertex spatial graphs and singular knots, that is obtained by replacing unknown crossings or vertices by rational tangles.
In this paper, We introduce an invariant of rational n-tangles which is obtained from the Kauffman bracket. It forms a vector with Laurent polynomial entries. We prove that the invariant classifies the rational 2-tangles and the reduced alternating rational 3-tangles. We conjecture that it classifies the rational 3-tangles as well.
Given an invariant J(K) of a knot K, the corresponding (1,1)-tangle invariant J'(K)=J(K)/J(U) is defined as the quotient of J(K) by its value J(U) on the unknot U. We prove here that J' is always an integer 2-variable Laurent polynomial when J is the Homfly satellite invariant determined by decorating K with any eigenvector of the meridian map in the Homfly skein of the annulus. Specialisation of the 2-variable polynomials for suitable choices of eigenvector shows that the (1,1)-tangle irreducible quantum sl(N) invariants of K are integer 1-variable Laurent polynomials.
We define polynomial tangle invariants $\nabla_T^s$ via Kauffman states and Alexander codes and investigate some of their properties. In particular, we prove symmetry relations for $\nabla_T^s$ of 4-ended tangles and deduce that the multivariable Alexander polynomial is invariant under Conway mutation. The invariants $\nabla_T^s$ can be interpreted naturally via Heegaard diagrams for tangles. This leads to a categorified version of $\nabla_T^s$: a Heegaard Floer homology $\widehat{\operatorname{HFT}}$ for tangles, which we define as a bordered sutured invariant. We discuss a bigrading on $\wid…
We consider a class of topological objects in the 3-sphere $S^3$ which will be called $n$-punctured ball tangles. Using the Kauffman bracket at $A=e^{i π/4}$, an invariant for a special type of $n$-punctured ball tangles is defined. The invariant $F^n$ takes values in $PM_{2\times2^n}(\mathbb Z)$, that is the set of $2\times 2^n$ matrices over $\mathbb Z$ modulo the scalar multiplication of $\pm1$. This invariant leads to a generalization of a theorem of D. Krebes which gives a necessary condition for a given collection of tangles to be embedded in a link in $S^3$ disjointly. Furthermore, we p…
The central discovery of $2d$ conformal theory was holomorphic factorization, which expressed correlation functions through bilinear combinations of conformal blocks, which are easily cut and joined without a need to sum over the entire huge Hilbert space of states. Somewhat similar, when a link diagram is glued from tangles, the link polynomial is a multilinear combination of {\it tangle blocks} summed over just a few representations of intermediate states. This turns to be a powerful approach because the same tangles appear as constituents of very different knots so that they can be extracte…
In this paper, we use skein-theoretic techniques to classify all virtual knot polynomials and trivalent graph invariants with certain smallness conditions. The first half of the paper classifies all virtual knot polynomials giving non-trivial invariants strictly smaller than the one given by the Higman-Sims spin model. In particular, we exhibit a family of skein theories coming from $\text{Rep}(O(2))$ with an interesting braiding. In addition, all skein theories of oriented virtual tangles with some smallness conditions are classified. In the second half of the paper, we classify all non-trivi…
We use Kauffman's bracket polynomial to define a complex-valued invariant of virtual rational tangles that generalizes the well-known fraction invariant for classical rational tangles. We provide a recursive formula for computing the invariant, and use it to compute several examples.
Ozsvath and Szabo recently constructed an algebraically defined invariant of tangles which takes the form of a DA bimodule. This invariant is expected to compute knot Floer homology. The authors have a similar construction for open braids and their plat closures which can be viewed as a filtered DA bimodule over the same algebras. For a closed diagram, this invariant computes the Khovanov homology of the knot or link. We show that forgetting the filtration, our DA bimodules are homotopy equivalent to a suitable version of the Ozsvath- Szabo bimodules. In addition to giving a relationship betwe…
Let G be a simple complex algebraic group. By using a notion of a G-category we define invariants of tangles with flat G-connections in their complements. We also show that quantized universal enveloping algebras at roots of unity provide examples of G-categories.
We consider a class of topological objects in the 3-sphere $S^3$ which will be called {\it $n$-punctured ball tangles}. Using the Kauffman bracket at $A=e^{πi/4}$, an invariant for a special type of $n$-punctured ball tangles is defined. The invariant $F$ takes values in $PM_{2\times2^n}(\mathbb Z)$, that is the set of $2\times 2^n$ matrices over $\mathbb Z$ modulo the scalar multiplication of $\pm1$. This invariant leads to a generalization of a theorem of D. Krebes which gives a necessary condition for a given collection of tangles to be embedded in a link in $S^3$ disjointly. We also addres…
We generalize the index polynomial invariant to the case of virtual tangles. Three polynomial invariants result from this generalization; we give a brief overview of their definition and some basic properties.
Ribbon tangles are proper embeddings of tori and cylinders in the $4$-ball~$B^4$, "bounding" $3$-manifolds with only ribbon disks as singularities. We construct an Alexander invariant $\mathsf{A}$ of ribbon tangles equipped with a representation of the fundamental group of their exterior in a free abelian group $G$. This invariant induces a functor in a certain category $\mathsf{R}ib_G$ of tangles, which restricts to the exterior powers of Burau-Gassner representation for ribbon braids, that are analogous to usual braids in this context. We define a circuit algebra $\mathsf{C}ob_G$ over the op…
We define new invariants of knots by means of quandle colorings and longitudinal information. These invariants can be applied to a tangle embedding problem and recognizing non-classical virtual knots.
We define a category $v\mathcal{T}$ of tangles diagrams drawn on surfaces with boundaries. On the one hand we show that there is a natural functor from the category of virtual tangles to $v\mathcal{T}$ which induces an equivalence of categories. On the other hand, we show that $v\mathcal{T}$ is universal among ribbon categories equipped with a strong monoidal functor to a symmetric monoidal category. This is a generalization of the Shum-Reshetikhin-Turaev theorem characterizing the category of ordinary tangles as the free ribbon category. This gives a straightforward proof that all quantum inv…
Virtual knot theory, introduced by Kauffman, is a generalization of classical knot theory of interest because its finite-type invariant theory is potentially a topological interpretation of Etingof and Kazhdan's theory of quantization of Lie bi-algebras. Classical knots inject into virtual knots, and flat virtual knots is the quotient of virtual knots which equates the real positive and negative crossings, and in this sense is complementary to classical knot theory within virtual knot theory. We completely classify flat virtual tangles with no closed components (pure tangles). This classificat…
In this paper we study how to distinguish two embeddings of a finite collection of disjoint circles into the plane up to planar isotopy. We adopt the spirit of the approach by V. Turaev, Operator Invariants of Tangles, Math. USSR-Izv. 35 (1990), 411--444, by considering a category of planar tangles and representing it in an ``algebraic'' category. From this we can extract a numerical invariant for embeddings of a finite collection of disjoint circles and this invariant is, up to certain choices, complete.
Let $q$ be a $2N$th root of unity where $N$ is odd. Let $U_q(sl_2)$ denote the quantum group with large center corresponding to the lie algebra $sl_2$ with generators $E,F,K$, and $K^{-1}$. A semicyclic representation of $U_q(sl_2)$ is an $N$-dimensional irreducible representation $ρ:U_q(sl_2)\rightarrow M_N(\mathbb{C})$, so that $ρ(E^N)=aId$ with $a\neq 0$, $ρ(F^N)=0$ and $ρ(K^N)=Id$. We construct a tangle functor for framed homogeneous tangles colored with semicyclic representations, and prove that for $(1,1)$-tangles coming from knots, the invariant defined by the tangle functor coincides w…
In this paper, we discuss degree 0 crossing change on Khovanov homology in terms of cobordisms. Namely, using Bar-Natan's formalism of Khovanov homology, we introduce a sum of cobordisms that yields a morphism on complexes of two diagrams of crossing change, which we call the "genus-one morphism." It is proved that the morphism is invariant under the moves of double points in tangle diagrams. As a consequence, in the spirit of Vassiliev theory, taking iterated mapping cones, we obtain an invariant for singular tangles that extending sl(2) tangle homology; examples include Lee homology, Bar-Nat…
We construct a bigraded (co)homology theory which depends on a parameter a, and whose graded Euler characteristic is the quantum sl(2) link invariant. We follow Bar-Natan's approach to tangles on one side, and Khovanov's sl(3) theory for foams on the other side. Our theory is properly functorial under tangle cobordisms, and a version of the Khovanov sl(2) invariant (or Lee's modification of it) corresponds to a=0 (or a=1). In particular, our construction naturally resolves the sign ambiguity in the functoriality of Khovanov's sl(2) homology theory.
Upsilon is a homomorphism on the smooth concordance group of knots defined by Ozsváth, Stipsicz and Szabó. In this paper, we define a generalization of upsilon for a family of embedded graphs in rational homolog spheres. We show that our invariant will induce a homomorphism on the homology cobordism group of homology cylinders, and present some applications. To define this invariant, we use tangle Floer homology. We lift relative gradings on tangle Floer homology to absolute gradings (for certain tangles) and prove a concatenation formula for it.
Using an extension of the Kontsevich integral to tangles in handlebodies similar to a construction given by Andersen, Mattes and Reshetikhin, we construct a functor $Z:\mathcal{B}\to \widehat{\mathbb{A}}$, where $\mathcal{B}$ is the category of bottom tangles in handlebodies and $\widehat{\mathbb{A}}$ is the degree-completion of the category $\mathbb{A}$ of Jacobi diagrams in handlebodies. As a symmetric monoidal linear category, $\mathbb{A}$ is the linear PROP governing "Casimir Hopf algebras", which are cocommutative Hopf algebras equipped with a primitive invariant symmetric 2-tensor. The f…
We consider the ways in which a 4-tangle T inside a unit cube can be extended outside the cube into a knot or link L. We present two links n(T) and d(T) such that the greatest common divisor of the determinants of these two links always divides the determinant of the link L. In order to prove this result we give a two-integer invariant of 4-tangles. Calculations are facilitated by viewing the determinant as the Kauffman bracket at a fourth root of -1, which sets the loop factor to zero. For rational tangles, our invariant coincides with the value of the associated continued fraction.
We generalize the Wriggle polynomial, first introduced by L. Folwaczny and L. Kauffman, to the case of virtual tangles. This generalization naturally arises when considering the self-crossings of the tangle. We prove that the generalization (and, by corollary, the original polynomial) are Vassiliev invariants of order one for virtual knots, and study some simple properties related to the connected sum of tangles.
The WRT invariant of a link L in S2xS1 at sufficiently high values of the level r can be expresses as an evaluation of a special polynomial invariant of L at 2r-th root of unity. We categorify this polynomial invariant by associating to L a bigraded homology whose graded Euler characteristic is equal to this polynomial. If L is presented as a closure of a tangle in S2xS1, then the homology of L is defined as the Hochschild homology of the H_n-bimodule associated to the tangle by M. Khovanov. This homology can also be expressed as a stable limit of Khovanov homology of the circular closure of t…
With a 4-ended tangle $T$, we associate a Heegaard Floer invariant $\operatorname{CFT^\partial}(T)$, the peculiar module of $T$. Based on Zarev's bordered sutured Heegaard Floer theory, we prove a glueing formula for this invariant which recovers link Floer homology $\operatorname{\widehat{HFL}}$. Moreover, we classify peculiar modules in terms of immersed curves on the 4-punctured sphere. In fact, based on an algorithm of Hanselman, Rasmussen and Watson, we prove general classification results for the category of curved complexes over a marked surface with arc system. This allows us to reinte…
We define an invariant of tangles and framed tangles given a finite crossed module and a pair of functions, called a Reidemeister pair, satisfying natural properties. We give several examples of Reidemeister pairs derived from racks, quandles, rack and quandle cocycles, 2-crossed modules and braided crossed modules. We prove that our construction includes all rack and quandle cohomology (framed) link invariants, as well as the Eisermann invariant of knots, for which we also find a lifting by using braided crossed modules.
