New obstructions for embedding one compact oriented 3-manifold in another are given. A theorem of D. Krebes concerning 4-tangles embedded in links arises as a special case. Algebraic and skein-theoretic generalizations for 2n-tangles provide invariants that persist in the corresponding invariants of links in which they embed. An example is given of a virtual 4-tangle for which Krebes's theorem does not hold.
This article addresses persistent tangles. These are tangles whose presence in a knot diagram forces that diagram to be knotted. We provide new methods for constructing persistent tangles. Our techniques rely mainly on the existence of non-trivial colorings for the tangles in question. Our main result in this article is that any knot admitting a non-trivial coloring gives rise to persistent tangles. Furthermore, we discuss when these persistent tangles are non-trivial.
A persistent lamination for a knot K is an essential lamination in the complement of the K, which remains essential after every non-trivial Dehn surgery along K. In particular, this implies that all of the Dehn surgery manifolds have universal cover R^3. This paper presents a method for building tangles T with the property that every knot K obtained by tangle sum with T has a persistent lamination. A natural generalization to 2n-string tangles is also given.

We introduce a generalization of oriented tangles, which are still called tangles, so that they are in one-to-one correspondence with the sutured manifolds. We define cobordisms between sutured manifolds (tangles) by generalizing cobordisms between oriented tangles. For every commutative algebra A over Z/2Z, we define A-Tangles to be the category consisting of A-tangles, which are balanced tangles with A-colorings of the tangle strands and fixed SpinC structures, and A-cobordisms as morphisms. An A-cobordism is a cobordism with a compatible A-coloring and an affine set of SpinC structures. Ass…
We prove a conjecture of Menasco and Zhang that if a tangle is completely tubing compressible then it consists of at most two families of parallel strands. This is related to problems of graphs in 3-manifold. A 1-vertex graph $Γ$ in a 3-manifold $M$ with a genus 1 Heegaard splitting is standard if it consists of one or two parallel sets of core curves lying in the Heegaard splitting solid tori of $M$ in the standard way. The above conjecture then follows from the theorem which says that a 1-vertex graph in $M$ is standard if and only if the exteriors of all its nontrivial subgraphs are handleb…
We prove an excision theorem for the singular instanton Floer homology that allows the excision surfaces to intersect the singular locus. This is an extension of the non-singular excision theorem by Kronheimer and Mrowka and the genus-zero singular excision theorem by Street. We use the singular excision theorem to define an instanton Floer homology theory for sutured manifolds with tangles. As applications, we prove that the annular Khovanov homology (1) detects the unlink, (2) detects the closure of the trivial braid, and (3) distinguishes braid closures from other links; we also prove that …
Given a compact oriented 3-manifold M in S^3 with boundary, an (M,2n)-tangle T is a 1-manifold with 2n boundary components properly embedded in M. We say that T embeds in a link L in S^3 if T can be completed to L by a 1-manifold with 2n boundary components exterior to M. The link L is called a closure of T. We define the Kauffman bracket ideal of T to be the ideal I_T generated by the reduced Kauffman bracket polynomials of all closures of T. If this ideal is non-trivial, then T does not embed in the unknot. We give an algorithm for computing a finite list of generators for the Kauffman brack…
In this paper we use 3-manifold techniques to illuminate the structure of the category of tangles. In particular, we show that every idempotent morphism $A$ in such a category naturally splits as $A=B\circ C$ such that $C\circ B$ is an identity morphism.
We develop a calculus of surgery data, called bridged links, which involves besides links also pairs of balls that describe one-handle attachements. As opposed to the usual link calculi of Kirby and others this description uses only elementary, local moves(namely modifications and isolated cancellations), and it is valid also on non-simply connected and disconnected manifolds. In particular, it allows us to give a presentation of a 3-manifold by doing surgery on any other 3-manifold with the same boundary. Bridged link presentations on unions of handlebodies are used to give a Cerf-theoretical…
Boring is an operation which converts a knot or two-component link in a 3--manifold into another knot or two-component link. It generalizes rational tangle replacement and can be described as a type of 2--handle attachment. Sutured manifold theory is used to study the existence of essential spheres and planar surfaces in the exteriors of knots and links obtained by boring a split link. It is shown, for example, that if the boring operation is complicated enough, a split link or unknot cannot be obtained by boring a split link. Particular attention is paid to rational tangle replacement. If a k…
Three-dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories are constructed by compactifying M5-branes on three-manifolds. In the infrared the branes recombine, and the physics is captured by a single M5-brane on a branched cover of the original ultraviolet geometry. The branch locus is a tangle, a one-dimensional knotted submanifold of the ultraviolet geometry. A choice of branch sheet for this cover yields a Lagrangian for the theory, and varying the branch sheet provides dual descriptions. Massless matter arises from vanishing size M2-branes and appears as singularities of the tangle where branch l…
Ribbon tangles are proper embeddings of tori and cylinders in the $4$-ball~$B^4$, "bounding" $3$-manifolds with only ribbon disks as singularities. We construct an Alexander invariant $\mathsf{A}$ of ribbon tangles equipped with a representation of the fundamental group of their exterior in a free abelian group $G$. This invariant induces a functor in a certain category $\mathsf{R}ib_G$ of tangles, which restricts to the exterior powers of Burau-Gassner representation for ribbon braids, that are analogous to usual braids in this context. We define a circuit algebra $\mathsf{C}ob_G$ over the op…
We show that the sutured Khovanov homology of a balanced tangle in the product sutured manifold D x I has rank 1 if and only if the tangle is isotopic to a braid.
We construct a family of hyperbolic link complements by gluing tangles along totally geodesic four-punctured spheres, then investigate the commensurability relation among its members. Those with different volume are incommensurable, distinguished by their scissors congruence classes. Mutation produces arbitrarily large finite subfamilies of nonisometric manifolds with the same volume and scissors congruence class. Depending on the choice of mutation, these manifolds may be commensurable or incommensurable, distinguished in the latter case by cusp parameters. All have trace field Q(i,\sqrt{2}),…
There have been a number of constructions of Lagrangian Floer homology invariants for $3$-manifolds defined in terms of symplectic character varieties arising from Heegaard splittings. With the aim of establishing an Atiyah-Floer counterpart of Kronheimer and Mrowka's singular instanton homology, we generalize one of these, due to H. Horton, to produce a Lagrangian Floer invariant of a knot or link $K \subset Y$ in a closed, oriented $3$-manifold, which we call symplectic instanton knot homology ($\mathrm{SIK}$). We use a multi-pointed Heegaard diagram to parametrize the gluing together of a p…
We study the concept of the fourth skein module of 3-manifolds, that is a skein module based on the skein relation b_0L_0 + b_1L_1 + b_2L_2 + b_3L_3 = 0 and a framing relation L^{(1)} = aL, where a, b_0, b_3 are invertible. We introdule the concept of n-algebraic tangles (and links) and analyze the skein module for 3-algebraic links. As a byproduct we prove the Montesinos-Nakanishi 3-move conjecture for 3-algebraic links (including 3-bridge links).
Given integers b, c, g, and n, we construct a manifold M containing a c-component link L so that there is a bridge surface Sigma for (M,L) of genus g that intersects L in 2b points and has distance at least n. More generally, given two possibly disconnected surfaces S and S', each with some even number (possibly zero) of marked points, and integers b, c, g, and n, we construct a compact, orientable manifold M with boundary S \cup S' such that M contains a c-component tangle T with a bridge surface Sigma of genus g that separates the boundary of M into S and S', |T \cap Sigma|=2b and T intersec…
We introduce a new technique for finding lower bounds on the Heegaard genus of a 3-manifold obtained by gluing a pair of 3-manifolds together along an incompressible torus or annulus. We deduce a number of inequalities, including one which implies that $t(K_1# K_2)\geq \max {t(K_1),t(K_2)}$, where $t(-)$ denotes tunnel number, $K_1$ and $K_2$ are knots in $S^3$, and $K_1$ is $m$-small. This inequality is best possible. We also provide an interesting collection of examples, similar to a set of examples found by Schultens and Wiedmann, which show that Heegaard genus can stay persistently low und…
Starting from considering deeper relationship between conjugacy classes and irreducible representations of a finite group $G$, we find some quite simple $R-$matrice defined by using finite groups. This construction produces many sets (or topological spaces) admitting braid group actions. We introduce conceptions "extended $R-$matrix" and "generalized extended $R-$matrix" generalizing Turaev's enhanced $R-$matrix, which can still give invariants of oriented links. With these new frames, we show that above $R-$matrix, together with certain commuting pairs (essentially conjugacy classes of commut…
We provide an upper bound on the Cheeger constant and first eigenvalue of the Laplacian of a finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold M, in terms of data from any surgery diagram for M. This has several consequences. We prove that a family of hyperbolic alternating link complements is expanding if and only if they have bounded volume. We also provide examples of hyperbolic 3-manifolds which require 'complicated' surgery diagrams, thereby proving that a recent theorem of Constantino and Thurston is sharp. Along the way, we find a new upper bound on the bridge number of a knot that is not tangle comp…
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the categorical structure for a method of defining quantum invariants of knots, links and three-manifolds. These invariants can be defined in terms of right integrals on certain Hopf algebras. We call such an invariant of 3-manifolds a Hennings invariant. The work reported in this paper has its background in previous work of the authors. The present paper gives an abstract description of these structures and shows how the Hopf algebraic image of a knot lies in the center of the corresponding Hopf algebra. The paper also shows how all the axiomatic proper…
We consider hyperbolic and partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on compact manifolds. Associated with invariant foliation of these systems, we define some topological invariants and show certain relationships between these topological invariants and the geometric and Lyapunov growths of these foliations. As an application, we show examples of systems with persistent non- absolute continuous center and weak unstable foliations. This generalizes the remarkable results of Shub and Wilkinson to cases where the center manifolds are not compact.
