We show that for every positive integer $k$, there exist $k$ consecutive primes having the property that if any digit of any one of the primes, including any of the infinitely many leading zero digits, is changed, then that prime becomes composite.
Tao has shown that in any fixed base, a positive proportion of prime numbers cannot have any digit changed and remain prime. In other words, most primes are "digitally delicate". We strengthen this result in a manner suggested by Tao: A positive proportion of primes become composite under any change of a single digit and any insertion a fixed number of arbitrary digits at the beginning or end.
In 1973, J.-R. Chen showed that every large even integer is a sum of a prime and a product of at most two primes. In this paper, the author indicates and fixes the issues in a simplified proof of this result given by Pan et al.
Let $\mathcal{A}'$ be the set of integers missing any three fixed digits from their decimal expansion. We produce primes in a thin sequence by proving an asymptotic formula for counting primes of the form $p = m^2 + \ell^2$, with $\ell \in \mathcal{A}'$. The proof draws on ideas from the work of Friedlander-Iwaniec on primes of the form $p = x^2+y^4$, as well as ideas from the work of Maynard on primes with restricted digits.
Making use of covering systems and a theorem of D. Shiu, the first and second authors showed that for every positive integer $k$, there exist $k$ consecutive widely digitally delicate primes. They also noted that for every positive integer $k$, there exist $k$ consecutive primes which are Brier numbers. We show that for every positive integer $k$, there exist $k$ consecutive primes that are both widely digitally delicate and Brier numbers.

Benford's Law describes the prevalence of small numbers as the leading digits of numbers in many sets of integers. We prove a variant of Benford's law for many positive-density subsets of the primes. This follows from a more general result over number fields.
Let $S$ be a string of $l$ decimal digits. We give an explicit upper bound on some prime $p$ whose decimal representation contains the string $S$. We also show, as a corollary of the Green-Tao theorem, that there are arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions of prime numbers all of whose decimal representations contain $S$.
Let $b \ge 2$ be an integer. Not much is known on the representation in base $b$ of prime numbers or of numbers whose prime factors belong to a given, finite set. Among other results, we establish that any sufficiently large integer which is not a multiple of $b$ and has only small (in a suitable sense) prime factors has at least four nonzero digits in its representation in base $b$.
Prescribin the binary digits of the primes, II

We know that any prime number of form $4s+1$ can be written as a sum of two perfect square numbers. As a consequence of Goldbach's weak conjecture, any number great than $10$ can be represented as a sum of four primes. We are motivated to consider an equation with some constraints about digital sum for the four primes. And we conclude that the square root of the digital sum of the four primes will greater than $4$ and will not be a multiple of $3$ if the equation has solutions. In the proof, we give the method of determining whether a number is a perfect square.
Let $q$ be a sufficiently large integer, and $a_0\in\{0,\dots,q-1\}$. We show there are infinitely many prime numbers which do not have the digit $a_0$ in their base $q$ expansion. Similar results are obtained for values of a polynomial (satisfying the necessary local conditions) and if multiple digits are excluded. Our proof is based on the Hardy-Littlewood circle method and Fourier analysis of the set of integers with no digit equal to $a_0$ in base $q$.
Let $$γ^*=\frac{8}{9}+\frac{2}{3}\:\frac{\log(10/9)}{\log 10}\:(\approx 0.919\ldots)\:.$$ Let $γ^*<γ_0\leq 1$, $c_0=1/γ_0$ be fixed. Let also $a_0\in\{0,1,\ldots, 9\}$.\\ We prove on assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis that each sufficiently large odd integer $N_0$ can be represented in the form $$N_0=p_1+p_2+p_3\:,$$ where the $p_i$ are of the form $p_i=[n_i^{c_0}]$, $n_i\in\mathbb{N}$, for $i=1,2$ and the decimal expansion of $p_3$ does not contain the digit $a_0$.\\ The proof merges methods of J. Maynard from his paper on the infinitude of primes with restricted digits, results…
The double sum sum_(s >= 1) sum_p 1/(p^s log p^s) = 2.00666645... over the inverse of the product of prime powers p^s and their logarithms, is computed to 24 decimal digits. The sum covers all primes p and all integer exponents s>=1. The calculational strategy is adopted from Cohen's work which basically looks at the fraction as the underivative of the Prime Zeta Function, and then evaluates the integral by numerical methods.
We investigate the distribution of the digits of quotients of randomly chosen positive integers taken from the interval $[1,T]$, improving the previously known error term for the counting function as $T\to+\infty$. We also resolve some natural variants of the problem concerning points with prime coordinates and points that are visible from the origin.
Prescribing the binary digits of primes

A 60,000 digit prime number of the form $x^{2} + x + 41$
Let $a_0\in\{0,\dots,9\}$. We show there are infinitely many prime numbers which do not have the digit $a_0$ in their decimal expansion. The proof is an application of the Hardy-Littlewood circle method to a binary problem, and rests on obtaining suitable `Type I' and `Type II' arithmetic information for use in Harman's sieve to control the minor arcs. This is obtained by decorrelating Diophantine conditions which dictate when the Fourier transform of the primes is large from digital conditions which dictate when the Fourier transform of numbers with restricted digits is large. These estimates…
Let $$γ^*:=\frac{8}{9}+\frac{2}{3}\:\frac{\log(10/9)}{\log 10}\:(\approx 0.919\ldots)\:,\ γ^*<\frac{1}{c_0}\leq 1\:.$$ Let $γ^*<γ_0\leq 1$, $c_0=1/γ_0$ be fixed. Let also $a_0\in\{0,1,\ldots, 9\}$. In [23] we proved on assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), that each sufficiently large odd integer $N_0$ can be represented in the form $$N_0=p_1+p_2+p_3\:,$$ where for $i=2, 3$ the primes $p_i$ are Piatetski-Shapiro primes - primes of the form $p_i=[n_i^{c_0}]$, $n_i\in\mathbb{N}$ - whereas the decimal expansion of $p_1$ does not contain the digit $a_0$. In this paper we replace …

Permutations and primes

Bounds For The Tail Distribution Of The Sum Of Digits Of Prime Numbers

Recently Oliver and Soundararajan made conjectures based on computational enumerations about the frequency of occurrence of pairs of last digits for consecutive primes. By studying Eratosthenes sieve, we have identified discrete dynamic systems that exactly model the populations of gaps across stages of Eratosthenes sieve. Our models provide some insight into the observed biases in the occurrences of last digits in consecutive primes, and the models suggest that the biases will ultimately be reversed for large enough primes. The exact model for populations of gaps across stages of Eratosthenes…
We present a transformation, based on the Bézout's identity, which maps the set of pairs of relatively prime numbers $(p,q)$ with fixed $p$ and $0<q<p$, to pairs of relatively prime numbers in the $p\times p$ square in $\mathbb R^2$, in such a way that intriguing quadratic arcs show up. We exhibit parametrizations of quadratic curves which fit such quadratic arcs and we also justify algebraically the ensuing geometry.

By a sphere-packing argument, we show that there are infinitely many pairs of primes that are close to each other for some metrics on the integers. In particular, for any numeration basis $q$, we show that there are infinitely many pairs of primes the base $q$ expansion of which differ in at most two digits. Likewise, for any fixed integer $t,$ there are infinitely many pairs of primes, the first $t$ digits of which are the same. In another direction, we show that, there is a constant $c$ depending on $q$ such that for infinitely many integers $m$ there are at least $c\log \log m$ primes which…
In this note, we revisit a result of Benli's and Pollack's on the number of small prime $k^{th}$ power residues. The proof is based on their idea of using reciprocity laws, but the argument is simplified and we prove a slightly stronger bound.
Motivated by recently developed interest to the distribution of $q$-ary digits of Mersenne numbers $M_p = 2^p-1$, where $p$ is prime, we estimate rational exponential sums with $M_p$, $p \leq X$, modulo a large power of a fixed odd prime $q$. In turn this immediately implies the normality of strings of $q$-ary digits amongst about $(\log X)^{3/2+o(1)}$ rightmost digits of $M_p$, $p \leq X$. Previous results imply this only for about $(\log X)^{1+o(1)}$ rightmost digits.
The notion of chiral prime concatenations is studied as a recursive construction of prime numbers starting from a seed set and with appropriate blocks to define the primality growth, generation by generation, either from the right or from the left. Several basic questions are addressed like whether chiral concatenation is a symmetric process, an endless process, as well as the calculation of largest chiral prime numbers. In particular, the largest left-concatenated prime number is constructed. It is a unique prime number of 24 digits. By introducing anomalous left-concatenations of primes we c…

It has long been known that sequences such as the powers of $2$ and the factorials satisfy Benford's Law; that is, leading digits in these sequences occur with frequencies given by $P(d)=\log_{10}(1+1/d)$, $d=1,2,\dots,9$. In this paper, we consider the leading digits of the Mersenne numbers $M_n=2^{p_n}-1$, where $p_n$ is the $n$-th prime. In light of known irregularities in the distribution of primes, one might expect that the leading digit sequence of $\{M_n\}$ has \emph{worse} distribution properties than "smooth" sequences with similar rates of growth, such as $\{2^{n\log n}\}$. Surprisin…

Let $F$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. In this paper we develop methods to represent arbitrary elements of $F[t]$ as sums of perfect $k$-th powers for any $k\in\mathbb{N}$ relatively prime to $p$. Using these methods we establish bounds on the necessary number of $k$-th powers in terms of the sum of the digits of $k$ in its base-$p$ expansion. As one particular application we prove that for any fixed prime $p>2$ and any $ε>0$ the number of $(p^r-1)$-th powers required is $\mathcal{O}\left(r^{(2+ε)\ln(p)}\right)$ as a function of $r$.
Wright proved that there exists a number $c$ such that if $g_0 = c$ and $g_{n+1} = 2^{g_n}$, then $\lfloor g_n \rfloor$ is prime for all $n > 0$. Wright gave $c = 1.9287800$ as an example. This value of $c$ produces three primes, $\lfloor g_1 \rfloor = 3$, $\lfloor g_2 \rfloor = 13$, and $\lfloor g_3 \rfloor = 16381$. But with this $c$, $\lfloor g_4 \rfloor$ is a 4932-digit composite number. However, this slightly larger value of $c$, \[ c = 1.9287800 + 8.2843 \cdot 10^{-4933}, \] reproduces Wright's first three primes and generates a fourth: \[ \lfloor g_4 \rfloor = 19139664204631104984038373…
Let $b \geq 2$ be an integer base with prime factors $p_1, \ldots, p_s$. In this paper we study sequences of "$b$-adic valuations" and last nonzero digits in $b$-adic expansions of the values $f(n) = (f_1(n), \ldots, f_s(n))$, where each $f_i$ is a $p_i$-adic analytic function. We give a complete classification concerning $k$-regularity of these sequences, which generalizes a result for $b$ prime obtained by Shu and Yao. As an application, we strengthen a theorem by Murru and Sanna on $b$-adic valuations of Lucas sequences of the first kind. Moreover, we derive a method to determine precisely …
The first digit frequencies of primes and Riemann zeta zeros tend to uniformity following a size-dependent generalized Benford's law

The normality of digits in almost constant additive functions
For certain primes $p$, the average digit in the expansion of $1/p$ was found to have a deviation from random behaviour related to the class number of the imaginary quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p})$ (Girstmair 1994). In this short note, we observe that for the corresponding problem when we replace the integers by polynomials over a finite field, there is never any bias. The argument is elementary.
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the relationship between prime numbers and sums of Fibonacci numbers. One of our main results says that for every sufficiently large integer $k$ there exists a prime number that can be represented as the sum of $k$ different and non-consecutive Fibonacci numbers. This property is closely related to, and based on, a prime number theorem for certain morphic sequences. The proof of such a prime number theorem, combined with a corresponding local result, is the central contribution of this paper, from which we derive the result stated in the beginning. Probl…

We give an algorithm to enumerate all primitive abundant numbers (briefly, PANs) with a fixed $Ω$ (the number of prime factors counted with their multiplicity), and explicitly find all PANs up to $Ω=6$, count all PANs and square-free PANs up to $Ω=7$ and count all odd PANs and odd square-free PANs up to $Ω=8$. We find primitive weird numbers (briefly, PWNs) with up to 16 prime factors, improving the previous results of [Amato-Hasler-Melfi-Parton] where PWNs with up to 6 prime factors have been given. We show that $$\sum_{\substack{p_n \in [x, 2x] \\ p_{n+1} - p_n \ge x^{1/2}}} (p_{n+1} - p_n) \ll x^{0.57+ε}$$ and $$\sum_{\substack{p_n \in [x, 2x] \\ p_{n+1} - p_n \ge x^{0.45}}} (p_{n+1} - p_n) \ll x^{0.63+ε},$$ where $p_n$ is the $n$th prime number. The proof combines Heath-Brown's recent work with Harman's sieve, improving and extending his results. We give applications of the results to prime-representing functions, binary digits of primes and approximation of reals by multiplicative functions.
For each of the functions $f \in \{ϕ, σ, ω, τ\}$ and every natural number $k$, we show that there are infinitely many solutions to the inequalities $f(p_n-1) < f(p_{n+1}-1) < \dots < f(p_{n+k}-1)$, and similarly for $f(p_n-1) > f(p_{n+1}-1) > \dots > f(p_{n+k}-1)$. We also answer some questions of Sierpiński on the digit sums of consecutive primes. The arguments make essential use of Maynard and Tao's method for producing many primes in intervals of bounded length.
We define S(um)anD(ifference) numbers as ordered pairs $(m,\, m+Δ)$ such that the digital-sum $DS(m(m+Δ))=Δ.$ We consider both the decimal and the binary case. If both $m$ and $m+Δ$ are prime numbers, we refer to SanD {\em primes}. We show that the number of (decimal-based) SanD numbers less than $x$ grows as $c1\cdot x,$ where $c1 = 2/3,$ while the number of SanD primes less than $x$ grows as $c2\cdot x/\log^2{x},$ where $c2 = 3/4.$ Due to the quasi-fractal nature of the digital-sum function, convergence is both slow and erratic compared to twin primes, which, apart from the constant, have th…
Consider the operation of adding the same number of identical digits to the left and to the right of a number n. In OEIS sequence A090287, it was conjectured that this operation will not produce a prime if and only if n is a palindrome with an even number of digits. We show that this conjecture is false by showing that this property also holds for n=231, n=420, and an infinite number of other values of n.
