Motivated by recently developed interest to the distribution of $q$-ary digits of Mersenne numbers $M_p = 2^p-1$, where $p$ is prime, we estimate rational exponential sums with $M_p$, $p \leq X$, modulo a large power of a fixed odd prime $q$. In turn this immediately implies the normality of strings of $q$-ary digits amongst about $(\log X)^{3/2+o(1)}$ rightmost digits of $M_p$, $p \leq X$. Previous results imply this only for about $(\log X)^{1+o(1)}$ rightmost digits.
It has long been known that sequences such as the powers of $2$ and the factorials satisfy Benford's Law; that is, leading digits in these sequences occur with frequencies given by $P(d)=\log_{10}(1+1/d)$, $d=1,2,\dots,9$. In this paper, we consider the leading digits of the Mersenne numbers $M_n=2^{p_n}-1$, where $p_n$ is the $n$-th prime. In light of known irregularities in the distribution of primes, one might expect that the leading digit sequence of $\{M_n\}$ has \emph{worse} distribution properties than "smooth" sequences with similar rates of growth, such as $\{2^{n\log n}\}$. Surprisin…
In the present article we introduce three new notions which are called Gaussian Mersenne Lucas numbers, Mersenne Lucas polynomials and Gaussian Mersenne Lucas polynomials. We present and prove our exciting properties and results of them such as: recurrence relations, Binet's formulas, explicit formulas, generating functions, symmetric functions and negative extensions.
We have calculated on the computer the sum $\bar{\BB}_M$ of reciprocals of all 47 known Mersenne primes with the accuracy of over 12000000 decimal digits. Next we developed $\bar{\BB}_M$ into the continued fraction and calculated geometrical means of the partial denominators of the continued fraction expansion of $\bar{\BB}_M$. We get values converging to the Khinchin's constant. Next we calculated the $n$-th square roots of the denominators of the $n$-th convergents of these continued fractions obtaining values approaching the Khinchin-L{è}vy constant. These two results suggests that the sum …
The Mersenne primes are primes which can be written as some prime power of 2 minus 1. These primes were studied from antiquity in that their close connection with perfect numbers and even to present day in that their easiness for primality test. In this paper, we introduce the dimorphic Mersenne numbers as a degenerate version of the Mersenne numbers and investigate some of their properties in connection with the degenerate Bernoulli polynomials and the incomplete Bell polynomials.
In this research paper, relationship between every Mersenne prime and certain Natural numbers is explored. We begin by proving that every Mersenne prime is of the form {4n + 3,for some integer 'n'} and generalize the result to all powers of 2. We also tabulate and show their relationship with other whole numbers up to 10. A number of minor results are also proved. Based on these results, approaches to determine the cardinality of Mersenne primes are discussed.
We present here a new conjecture for the nature of the Mersenne prime numbers by connecting it with the Collatz-Kakutani problem. By introducing a natural path length on the basis of the Collatz-Kakutani tree, we conjecture that this path length of a Mersenne prime from the root of the Collatz-Kakutani tree is approximately proportional to the index of the Mersenne prime. We also discuss difference of behaviors between Mersenne numbers and Mersenne primes.
Generalized Mersenne numbers are defined as $M_{p,n} = p^n - p + 1$, where $p$ is any prime and $n$ is any positive integer. Here, we prove that for each pair $(c, p)$ with $c\geq 1$ an integer, there is at most one $M_{p, n}$ of the form $cx^2$ with a few exceptions.
Let $(M_n)_{n\geq0}$ be the Mersenne sequence defined by $M_n=2^n-1$. Let $ω(n)$ be the number of distinct prime divisors of $n.$ In this short note, we present a description of the Mersenne numbers satisfying $ω(M_n)\leq3$. Moreover, we prove that the inequality, given $ε>0$, $ω(M_n)> 2^{(1-ε)\log\log n} -3 $ holds for almost all positive integers $n$. Besides, we present the integer solutions $(m,n,a)$ of the equation $M_m+M_n=2p^a$ with $m,n\geq2$, $p$ an odd prime number and $a$ a positive integer.
In this paper, we define new generalized k-Mersenne numbers and give a formula of generalized Mersenne polynomials and further we study their properties. Moreover, we define Gaussian Mersenne numbers and obtain some identities like Binet Formula, Cassini's identity, D'Ocagne's Identity, and generating functions. The generalized Gaussian Mersenne numbers are described and the relation with classical Mersenne numbers are explained. We also introduce a generalization of Gaussian Mersenne polynomials and establish some properties of these polynomials.
In this paper, we introduce a Carlitz module analogue of Mersenne primes, and prove Carlitz module analogues of several classical results concerning Mersenne primes. In contrast to the classical case, we can show that there are infinitely many composite Mersenne numbers. We also study the acquaintances of Mersenne primes including Wieferich and non-Wieferich primes in the Carlitz module context that were first introduced by Dinesh Thakur.
We introduce a new class of pseudoprimes-so called "overpseudoprimes to base $b$", which is a subclass of strong pseudoprimes to base $b$. Denoting via $|b|_n$ the multiplicative order of $b$ modulo $n$, we show that a composite $n$ is overpseudoprime if and only if $|b|_d$ is invariant for all divisors $d>1$ of $n$. In particular, we prove that all composite Mersenne numbers $2^{p}-1$, where $p$ is prime, are overpseudoprime to base 2 and squares of Wieferich primes are overpseudoprimes to base 2. Finally, we show that some kinds of well known numbers are overpseudoprime to a base $b$.
We introduce a new class of pseudoprimes-so called "overpseudoprimes" which is a special subclass of super-Poulet pseudoprimes. Denoting via h(n) the multiplicative order of 2 modulo n, we show that odd number n is overpseudoprime iff value of h(n) is invariant of all divisors d>1 of n. In particular, we prove that all composite Mersenne numbers 2^p-1,where p is prime, and squares of Wieferich primes are overpseudoprimes. We give also a generalization of the results on arbitrary base a>1 and prove that every overpseudoprime is strong pseudoprime of the same base.
Let P(k) be the largest prime factor of the positive integer k. In this paper, we prove that the series $\sum_{n\ge 1}\frac{(\log n)^a}{P(2^n-1)}$ is convergent for each constant a<1/2, which gives a more precise form of a result of C. L. Stewart from 1977.
The concept of Mersenne primes is studied in real quadratic fields of class number 1. Computational results are given. The field $Q(\sqrt{2})$ is studied in detail with a focus on representing Mersenne primes in the form $x^{2}+7y^{2}$. It is also proved that $x$ is divisible by 8 and $y\equiv \pm3\pmod{8}$ generalizing the result of F Lemmermeyer, first proved in \cite{LS} using Artin's Reciprocity law.
We get some results about the factorization of $ϕ_p(M) \in {\mathbb{F}}_2[x]$, where $p$ is a prime number, $ϕ_p$ is the corresponding cyclotomic polynomial and $M$ is a Mersenne prime (polynomial). By the way, we better understand the factorization of the sum of the divisors of $M^{2h}$, for a positive integer $h$.
We investigate various questions concerning the reciprocal sum of divisors, or prime divisors, of the Mersenne numbers $2^n-1$. Conditional on the Elliott-Halberstam Conjecture and the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we determine $\max_{n\le x} \sum_{p \mid 2^n-1} 1/p$ to within $o(1)$ and $\max_{n\le x} \sum_{d\mid 2^n-1}1/d$ to within a factor of $1+o(1)$, as $x\to\infty$. This refines, conditionally, earlier estimates of Erdős and Erdős-Kiss-Pomerance. Conditionally (only) on GRH, we also determine $\sum 1/d$ to within a factor of $1+o(1)$ where $d$ runs over all numbers dividing $2^n-1$ fo…
Generalised Mersenne Numbers (GMNs) were defined by Solinas in 1999 and feature in the NIST (FIPS 186-2) and SECG standards for use in elliptic curve cryptography. Their form is such that modular reduction is extremely efficient, thus making them an attractive choice for modular multiplication implementation. However, the issue of residue multiplication efficiency seems to have been overlooked. Asymptotically, using a cyclic rather than a linear convolution, residue multiplication modulo a Mersenne number is twice as fast as integer multiplication; this property does not hold for prime GMNs, u…
A k-query Locally Decodable Code (LDC) encodes an n-bit message x as an N-bit codeword C(x), such that one can probabilistically recover any bit x_i of the message by querying only k bits of the codeword C(x), even after some constant fraction of codeword bits has been corrupted. The major goal of LDC related research is to establish the optimal trade-off between length and query complexity of such codes. Recently [Y] introduced a novel technique for constructing locally decodable codes and vastly improved the upper bounds for code length. The technique is based on Mersenne primes. In this pap…
Today, prime numbers attained exceptional situation in the area of numbers theory and cryptography. As we know, the trend for accessing to the largest prime numbers due to using Mersenne theorem, although resulted in vast development of related numbers, however it has reduced the speed of accessing to prime numbers from one to five years. This paper could attain to theorems that are more extended than Mersenne theorem with accelerating the speed of accessing to prime numbers. Since that time, the reason for frequently using Mersenne theorem was that no one could find an efficient formula for a…
It is still open whether there exist infinitely many Fermat primes or infinitely many composite Fermat numbers. The same question concerning the Mersenne numbers is also unsolved. Extending some results from [9], we characterizethe the Fermat primes and the Mersenne primes in terms of topological minimality of some matrix groups. This is done by showing, among other things, that if $\Bbb{F}$ is a subfield of a local field of characteristic $\neq 2,$ then the special upper triangular group $\operatorname{ST^+}(n,\Bbb{F})$ is minimal precisely when the special linear group $\operatorname{SL}(n,\…

The appearance of primes in a family of linear recurrence sequences labelled by a positive integer $n$ is considered. The terms of each sequence correspond to a particular class of Lehmer numbers, or (viewing them as polynomials in $n$) dilated versions of the so-called Chebyshev polynomials of the fourth kind, also known as airfoil polynomials. It is proved that when the value of $n$ is given by a dilated Chebyshev polynomial of the first kind evaluated at a suitable integer, either the sequence contains a single prime, or no term is prime. For all other values of $n$, it is conjectured that …
Classifications of twin primes are established and then applied to triplets that generalize to all higher multiplets. Mersenne and Fermat twins and triplets are treated in this framework. Regular prime number multiplets are related to quadratic and cubic prime number generating polynomials.
Our main source of inspiration was a talk by Hendrik Lenstra on harmonic numbers, which are numbers whose only prime factors are two or three. Gersonides proved 675 years ago that one can be written as a difference of harmonic numbers in only four ways: 2-1, 3-2, 4-3, and 9-8. We investigate which numbers other than one can or cannot be written as a difference of harmonic numbers and we look at their connection to the $abc$-conjecture. We find that there are only eleven numbers less than 100 that cannot be written as a difference of harmonic numbers (we call these $ndh$-numbers). The smallest …
The equality between the number of odd spin structures on a Riemann surface of genus g, with $2^g - 1$ being a Mersenne prime, and the even perfect numbers, is an indication that the action of the modular group on the set of spin structures has special properties related to the sequence of perfect numbers. A method for determining whether Mersenne numbers are primes is developed by using a geometrical representation of these numbers. The connection between the non-existence of finite odd perfect numbers and the irrationality of the square root of twice the product of a sequence of repunits is …
Let $k>2$ be a prime such that $2^k-1$ is a Mersenne prime. Let $n = 2^{α-1}p$, where $α>1$ and $p<3\cdot 2^{α-1}-1$ is an odd prime. Continuing the work of Cai et al. and Jiang, we prove that $n\ |\ σ_k(n)$ if and only if $n$ is an even perfect number $\neq 2^{k-1}(2^k-1)$. Furthermore, if $n = 2^{α-1}p^{β-1}$ for some $β>1$, then $n\ |\ σ_5(n)$ if and only if $n$ is an even perfect number $\neq 496$.
In this paper we derive a formula for the number of $N$-free elements over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ with prescribed trace, in particular trace zero, in terms of Gaussian periods. As a consequence, we derive a simple explicit formula for the number of primitive elements, in quartic extensions of Mersenne prime fields, having absolute trace zero. We also give a simple formula in the case when $Q = (q^m-1)/(q-1)$ is prime. More generally, for a positive integer $N$ whose prime factors divide $Q$ and satisfy the so called semi-primitive condition, we give an explicit formula for the number of…
We give 50 digits values of the simple continued fractions whose denominators are formed from a) prime numbers, b) twin primes, c) generalized $d$-twins, d) primes of the form $m^2+n^4$, e)primes of the form $m^2+1$, f) Mersenne primes and g) primorial primes. All these continued fractions belong to the set of measure zero of exceptions to the theorems of Khinchin and Levy. We claim that all these continued fractions are transcendental numbers. Next we propose the conjecture which indicates the way to deduce the transcendence of some continued fractions from transcendence of another ones.
In this paper, we consider properties of coefficients of a generating functions composition, where the outer function is a logarithmic generating function and the inner function is an ordinary generating function with integer coefficients. Using notions of composita and composition of generating functions, we get new properties for this composition. The properties can be used for distinguishing prime numbers from composite numbers. As an application, obtained results can be used to obtain new primality criteria. We obtain primality criteria for the Mersenne numbers, the Lucas numbers, the Pell…
If we form a decimal where the nth digit is the last non-zero digit of $n!$ (likewise, the last non-zero digit of $n^n$), we obtain an irrational number
We investigate the problem of finding integers $k$ such that appending any number of copies of the base-ten digit $d$ to $k$ yields a composite number. In particular, we prove that there exist infinitely many integers coprime to all digits such that repeatedly appending {\it any} digit yields a composite number.
In the paper, I consider appearance of unit's digits in minor totals of a few integer sequences. The sequences include the sequence of even integers, sequence of odd integers and Faulhaber polynomial at $p = 2$. Application of difference tables allows predicting of which digits can appear as unit's digits in minor totals of the sequences. Absence of some digits ("gaps" in frequency distributions) depends often on numbering system applied. However, in case of odd numbers' integers the gaps are found under all numbering systems with bases from 3 to 10.
Following in the footsteps of P. Erdős and A. Rényi we compute the Hausdorff dimension of sets of numbers whose digits with respect to their $Q$-Cantor series expansions satisfy various statistical properties. In particular, we consider difference sets associated with various notions of normality and sets of numbers with a prescribed range of digits.
Making use of covering systems and a theorem of D. Shiu, the first and second authors showed that for every positive integer $k$, there exist $k$ consecutive widely digitally delicate primes. They also noted that for every positive integer $k$, there exist $k$ consecutive primes which are Brier numbers. We show that for every positive integer $k$, there exist $k$ consecutive primes that are both widely digitally delicate and Brier numbers.
Consider the operation of adding the same number of identical digits to the left and to the right of a number n. In OEIS sequence A090287, it was conjectured that this operation will not produce a prime if and only if n is a palindrome with an even number of digits. We show that this conjecture is false by showing that this property also holds for n=231, n=420, and an infinite number of other values of n.
In the base phi expansion any natural number is written uniquely as a sum of powers of the golden mean with digits 0 and 1, where one requires that the product of two consecutive digits is always 0. In this paper we show that the sum of digits function modulo 2 of these expansions is a morphic sequence. In particular we prove that --- like for the Thue-Morse sequence --- the frequency of 0's and 1's in this sequence is equal to 1/2.
Benford's Law describes the prevalence of small numbers as the leading digits of numbers in many sets of integers. We prove a variant of Benford's law for many positive-density subsets of the primes. This follows from a more general result over number fields.
We first give a summary of the history of transcendental numbers then use a nice technique by G. Dresden to prove a new transcendental number. In particular, while previous work looked at the last non-zero digit of $n^n$, we consider the digit right before its last non-zero digit and show that the infinite decimal built from these digits is transcendental.
Tao has shown that in any fixed base, a positive proportion of prime numbers cannot have any digit changed and remain prime. In other words, most primes are "digitally delicate". We strengthen this result in a manner suggested by Tao: A positive proportion of primes become composite under any change of a single digit and any insertion a fixed number of arbitrary digits at the beginning or end.
