We prove existence of partitions of an open set $Ω$ with a given number of phases, which minimize the sum of the fractional perimeters of all the phases, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In two dimensions we show that, if the fractional parameter $s$ is sufficiently close to $1$, the only singular minimal cone, that is, the only minimal partition invariant by dilations and with a singular point, is given by three half-lines meeting at $120$ degrees. In the case of a weighted sum of fractional perimeters, we show that there exists a unique minimal cone with three phases.
We show that the only nonlocal $s$-minimal cones in $\R^2$ are the trivial ones for all $s \in (0,1)$. As a consequence we obtain that the singular set of a nonlocal minimal surface has at most $n-3$ Hausdorff dimension.
We prove an improvement of flatness result for nonlocal minimal surfaces which is independent of the fractional parameter $s$ when $s\rightarrow 1^-$. As a consequence, we obtain that all the nonlocal minimal cones are flat and that all the nonlocal minimal surfaces are smooth when the dimension of the ambient space is less or equal than 7 and $s$ is close to 1.
We show that nonlocal minimal cones which are non-singular subgraphs outside the origin are necessarily halfspaces. The proof is based on classical ideas of~\cite{DG1} and on the computation of the linearized nonlocal mean curvature operator, which is proved to satisfy a suitable maximum principle. With this, we obtain new, and somehow simpler, proofs of the Bernstein-type results for nonlocal minimal surfaces which have been recently established in~\cite{FV}. In addition, we establish a new nonlocal Bernstein-Moser-type result which classifies Lipschitz nonlocal minimal subgraphs outside a ba…
We prove a flatness result for entire nonlocal minimal graphs having some partial derivatives bounded from either above or below. This result generalizes fractional versions of classical theorems due to Bernstein and Moser. Our arguments rely on a general splitting result for blow-downs of nonlocal minimal graphs. Employing similar ideas, we establish that entire nonlocal minimal graphs bounded on one side by a cone are affine. Moreover, we show that entire graphs having constant nonlocal mean curvature are minimal, thus extending a celebrated result of Chern on classical CMC graphs.
We prove that, in every dimension, Lipschitz nonlocal minimal surfaces are smooth. Also, we extend to the nonlocal setting a famous theorem of De Giorgi stating that the validity of Bernstein's theorem in dimension $n+1$ is a consequence of the nonexistence of $n$-dimensional singular minimal cones in $\R^n$.
We discuss in this note the stickiness phenomena for nonlocal minimal surfaces. Classical minimal surfaces in convex domains do not stick to the boundary of the domain, hence examples of stickiness can be obtained only by removing the assumption of convexity. On the other hand, in the nonlocal framework, stickiness is "generic". We provide various examples from the literature, and focus on the case of complete stickiness in highly nonlocal regimes.
We prove that nonlocal minimal graphs in the plane exhibit generically stickiness effects and boundary discontinuities. More precisely, we show that if a nonlocal minimal graph in a slab is continuous up to the boundary, then arbitrarily small perturbations of the far-away data produce boundary discontinuities. Hence, either a nonlocal minimal graph is discontinuous at the boundary, or a small perturbation of the prescribed conditions produces boundary discontinuities. The proof relies on a sliding method combined with a fine boundary regularity analysis, based on a discontinuity/smoothness al…
We develop a functional analytic approach for the study of nonlocal minimal graphs. Through this, we establish existence and uniqueness results, a priori estimates, comparison principles, rearrangement inequalities, and the equivalence of several notions of minimizers and solutions.
In this paper we show that a nonlocal minimal surface which is a graph outside a cylinder is in fact a graph in the whole of the space. As a consequence, in dimension~$3$, we show that the graph is smooth. The proofs rely on convolution techniques and appropriate integral estimates which show the pointwise validity of an Euler-Lagrange equation related to the nonlocal mean curvature.
This Master's thesis presents a study of the basic properties of the s-fractional perimeter and of the regularity theory of the corresponding s-minimal sets. In particular, we give full detailed proofs for all the Theorems contained in the article "Nonlocal Minimal Surfaces" by Caffarelli, Roquejoffre and Savin, where these s-minimal sets were introduced and studied for the first time.
In this note, we showcase some recent results concerning the stickiness properties of nonlocal minimal graphs in the plane. To start with, the nonlocal minimal graphs in the plane enjoy an enhanced boundary regularity, since boundary continuity with respect to the external datum is sufficient to ensure differentiability across the boundary of the domain. As a matter of fact, the Hölder exponent of the derivative is in this situation sufficiently high to provide the validity of the Euler-Lagrange equation at boundary points as well. From this, using a sliding method, one also deduces that the s…
This doctoral thesis is devoted to the analysis of some minimization problems that involve nonlocal functionals. We are mainly concerned with the $s$-fractional perimeter and its minimizers, the $s$-minimal sets. We investigate the behavior of sets having (locally) finite fractional perimeter and we establish existence and compactness results for (locally) $s$-minimal sets. We study the $s$-minimal sets in highly nonlocal regimes, that correspond to small values of the fractional parameter $s$. We introduce a functional framework for studying those $s$-minimal sets that can be globally written…
We show that arbitrarily small antisymmetric perturbations of the zero function are sufficient to produce the stickiness phenomenon for planar nonlocal minimal graphs (with the same quantitative bounds obtained for the case of even symmetric perturbations, up to multiplicative constants). In proving this result, one also establishes an odd symmetric version of the maximum principle for nonlocal minimal graphs, according to which the odd symmetric minimizer is positive in the direction of the positive bump and negative in the direction of the negative bump.
The nonlocal world presents an abundance of surprises and wonders to discover. These special properties of the nonlocal world are usually the consequence of long-range interactions, which, especially in presence of geometric structures and nonlinear phenomena, end up producing a variety of novel patterns. We will briefly discuss some of these features, focusing on the case of (non)local minimal surfaces, (non)local phase coexistence models, and (non)local geometric flows.
The recent literature has intensively studied two classes of nonlocal variational problems, namely the ones related to the minimisation of energy functionals that act on functions in suitable Sobolev-Gagliardo spaces, and the ones related to the minimisation of fractional perimeters that act on measurable sets of the Euclidean space. In this article, we relate these two types of variational problems. In particular, we investigate the connection between the nonlocal minimal surfaces and the minimisers of the $W^{s,1}$-seminorm. In particular, we show that a function is a minimiser for the fract…
We prove that $C^{1,α}$ $s$-minimal surfaces are automatically $C^\infty$. For this, we develop a new bootstrap regularity theory for solutions of integro-differential equations of very general type, which we believe is of independent interest.
Alessio has produced in his very intense career an extraordinary number of outstanding results in an impressive variety of topics. Among the multifold research lines in which he acted as a trailblazer, the one focused on nonlocal minimal surfaces offered an excellent opportunity for Alessio to pioneer some of the first settlements in a brand new subject of investigation and pave the way to a broad spectrum of future research.
We consider surfaces which minimize a nonlocal perimeter functional and we discuss their interior regularity and rigidity properties, in a quantitative and qualitative way, and their (perhaps rather surprising) boundary behavior. We present at least a sketch of the proofs of these results, in a way that aims to be as elementary and self contained as possible.
We consider a nonlocal problem involving the fractional laplacian and the Hardy potential, in bounded smooth domains. Exploiting the moving plane method and some weak and strong comparison principles, we deduce symmetry and monotonicity properties of positive solutions under zero Dirichlet boundary conditions.
The de Giorgi theory for minimal surfaces consists in studying sets whose indicator function is a (local) minimum of the BV norm. In this paper we replace the BV norm by the $H^σ$ norm, with $σ<1/2$, and try to understand what the minimisers look like. Parallel to the de Giorgi theory we prove that, if the boundary of a minimiser is sufficiently flat in the unit ball, then it is a smooth piece of hypersurface.
This paper contains three types of results: 1. the construction of ground state solutions for a long-range Ising model whose interfaces stay at a bounded distance from any given hyperplane, 2. the construction of nonlocal minimal surfaces which stay at a bounded distance from any given hyperplane, 3. the reciprocal approximation of ground states for long-range Ising models and nonlocal minimal surfaces. In particular, we establish the existence of ground state solutions for long-range Ising models with planelike interfaces, which possess scale invariant properties with respect to the periodici…
We investigate asymptotic behavior of solutions for nonlocal elliptic boundary value problems in plane angles and in ${\mathbb R}^2\backslash\{0\}$. Such problems arise as model ones when studying asymptotics of solutions for nonlocal elliptic problems in bounded domains. We obtain explicit formulas for the asymptotic coefficients in terms of eigenvectors and associated vectors of both adjoint nonlocal operators (acting in spaces of distributions) and formally adjoint (with respect to the Green formula) nonlocal problems.
The paper is devoted to the study of asymptotic behavior of solutions for nonlocal elliptic problems in weighted spaces. We deal with the most difficult case where the support of nonlocal terms intersects with the boundary of a plane bounded domain. In this situation, a general form of the asymptotics is investigated and coefficients in the asymptotics are calculated.
We consider the behavior of the nonlocal minimal surfaces in the vicinity of the boundary. By a series of detailed examples, we show that nonlocal minimal surfaces may stick at the boundary of the domain, even when the domain is smooth and convex. This is a purely nonlocal phenomenon, and it is in sharp contrast with the boundary properties of the classical minimal surfaces. In particular, we show stickiness phenomena to half-balls when the datum outside the ball is a small half-ring and to the side of a two-dimensional box when the oscillation between the datum on the right and on the left is…
We consider the minimization of an energy functional given by the sum of a crystalline perimeter and a nonlocal interaction of Riesz type, under volume constraint. We show that, in the small mass regime, if the Wulff shape of the anisotropic perimeter has certain symmetry properties, then it is the unique global minimizer of the total energy. In dimension two this applies to convex polygons which are reflection symmetric with respect to the bisectors of the angles. We further prove a rigidity result for the structure of (local) minimizers in two dimensions.
We prove the existence of the analog of Lawson's minimal cones for a notion of nonlocal minimal surface introduced by Caffarelli, Roquejoffre and Savin, and establish their stability/instability in low dimensions. In particular we find that there are nonlocal stable minimal cones in dimension 7, in contrast with the case of classical minimal surfaces.
We study smoothness of generalized solutions of nonlocal elliptic problems in plane bounded domains with piecewise smooth boundary. The case where the support of nonlocal terms can intersect the boundary is considered. We announce conditions that are necessary and sufficient for any generalized solution to possess an appropriate smoothness (in terms of Sobolev spaces). The proofs are given in the forthcoming paper.
We consider nonlocal minimal surfaces in a cylinder with prescribed datum given by the complement of a slab. We show that when the width of the slab is large the minimizers are disconnected and when the width of the slab is small the minimizers are connected. This feature is in agreement with the classical case of the minimal surfaces. Nevertheless, we show that when the width of the slab is large the minimizers are not flat discs, as it happens in the classical setting, and, in particular, in dimension $2$ we provide a quantitative bound on the stickiness property exhibited by the minimizers.…
For nonnegative even kernels $K$, we consider the $K$-nonlocal perimeter functional acting on sets. Assuming the existence of a foliation of space made of solutions of the associated $K$-nonlocal mean curvature equation in an open set $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, we built a calibration for the nonlocal perimeter inside $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. The calibrating functional is a nonlocal null-Lagrangian. As a consequence, we conclude the minimality in $Ω$ of each leaf of the foliation. As an application, we prove the minimality of $K$-nonlocal minimal graphs and that they are the unique minimizers subje…
This paper is concerned with the analysis of the Cauchy problem of a general class of two-dimensional nonlinear nonlocal wave equations governing anti-plane shear motions in nonlocal elasticity. The nonlocal nature of the problem is reflected by a convolution integral in the space variables. The Fourier transform of the convolution kernel is nonnegative and satisfies a certain growth condition at infinity. For initial data in $L^{2}$ Sobolev spaces, conditions for global existence or finite time blow-up of the solutions of the Cauchy problem are established.
This article is mainly devoted to the asymptotic analysis of a fractional version of the (elliptic) Allen-Cahn equation in a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, with or without a source term in the right hand side of the equation (commonly called chemical potential). Compare to the usual Allen-Cahn equation, the Laplace operator is here replaced by the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$ with $s\in(0,1/2)$, as defined in Fourier space. In the singular limit $\varepsilon\to 0$, we show that arbitrary solutions with uniformly bounded energy converge both in the energetic and geometric sense to surf…
In this paper, we establish various maximum principles and develop the method of moving planes and the sliding method (on general unbounded domains) for equations involving the uniformly elliptic nonlocal Bellman operator. As a consequence, we derive multiple applications of these maximum principles and the moving planes method. For instance, we prove symmetry, monotonicity and uniqueness results and asymptotic properties for solutions to various equations involving the uniformly elliptic nonlocal Bellman operator in bounded domains, unbounded domains, epigraph or $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. In particul…
We establish quantitative properties of minimizers and stable sets for nonlocal interaction functionals, including the $s$-fractional perimeter as a particular case. On the one hand, we establish universal $BV$-estimates in every dimension $n\ge 2$ for stable sets. Namely, we prove that any stable set in $B_1$ has finite classical perimeter in $B_{1/2}$, with a universal bound. This nonlocal result is new even in the case of $s$-perimeters and its local counterpart (for classical stable minimal surfaces) was known only for simply connected two-dimensional surfaces immersed in $\mathbb R^3$. On…
In this paper, we consider the asymptotic behavior of the fractional mean curvature when $s\to 0^+$. Moreover, we deal with the behavior of $s$-minimal surfaces when the fractional parameter $s\in(0,1)$ is small, in a bounded and connected open set with $C^2$ boundary $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$. We classify the behavior of $s$-minimal surfaces with respect to the fixed exterior data (i.e. the $s$-minimal set fixed outside of $Ω$). So, for $s$ small and depending on the data at infinity, the $s$-minimal set can be either empty in $Ω$, fill all $Ω$, or possibly develop a wildly oscillating boundary…
We prove that half spaces are the only stable nonlocal $s$-minimal cones in $\mathbb{R}^3$, for $s\in(0,1)$ sufficiently close to $1$. This is the first classification result of stable $s$-minimal cones in dimension higher than two. Its proof can not rely on a compactness argument perturbing from $s=1$. In fact, our proof gives a quantifiable value for the required closeness of $s$ to $1$. We use the geometric formula for the second variation of the fractional $s$-perimeter, which involves a squared nonlocal second fundamental form, as well as the recent BV estimates for stable nonlocal minima…
The minimal wave speed of time-periodic traveling waves arising from a diffusive Kermack-McKendrick model with seasonality and nonlocal delayed interactions
We consider here a nonlocal phase transition energy in a periodic medium and we construct solutions whose interfaces lie at a bounded distance from any given hyperplane. These solutions are either periodic or quasiperiodic, depending on the rational dependency of the normal direction to the reference hyperplane. Remarkably, the oscillations of the interfaces with respect to the reference hyperplane are bounded by a universal constant times the periodicity scale of the medium. This geometric property allows us to establish, in the limit, the existence of planelike nonlocal minimal surfaces in a…
Given a $C^k$-smooth closed embedded manifold $\mathcal N\subset{\mathbb R}^m$, with $k\ge 2$, and a compact connected smooth Riemannian surface $(S,g)$ with $\partial S\neq\emptyset$, we consider $\frac 12$-harmonic maps $u\in H^{1/2}(\partial S,\mathcal N)$. These maps are critical points of the nonlocal energy \begin{equation}E(f;g):=\int_S\big|\nabla\widetilde u\big|^2\,d\text{vol}_g,\end{equation} where $\widetilde u$ is the harmonic extension of $u$ in $S$. We express the energy as a sum of the $\frac 12$-energies at each boundary component of $\partial S$ (suitably identified with the c…
Nonlocal problems for higher-order elliptic operators in dihedral and plane angles are considered. The Green formula is obtained, which leads to adjoint problems that take the form of nonlocal transmission problems in dihedral and plane angles. This allows us to establish necessary conditions of Fredholm solvability and sufficient conditions of one-valued solvability for nonlocal problems in dihedral angles.
We discuss the $Γ$-convergence, under the appropriate scaling, of the energy functional $$ \|u\|_{H^s(Ω)}^2+\int_ΩW(u)dx,$$ with $s \in (0,1)$, where $\|u\|_{H^s(Ω)}$ denotes the total contribution from $Ω$ in the $H^s$ norm of $u$, and $W$ is a double-well potential. When $s\in [1/2,\,1)$, we show that the energy $Γ$-converges to the classical minimal surface functional -- while, when $s\in(0,\,1/2)$, it is easy to see that the functional $Γ$-converges to the nonlocal minimal surface functional.
We consider entire solutions to $\mathcal{L}u=f(u)$ in $\mathbb R^2$, where $\mathcal L$ is a nonlocal operator with translation invariant, even and compactly supported kernel $K$. Under different assumptions on the operator $\mathcal L$, we show that monotone solutions are necessarily one-dimensional. The proof is based on a Liouville type approach. A variational characterization of the stability notion is also given, extending our results in some cases to stable solutions.
We consider the class of measurable functions defined in all of $\mathbb{R}^n$ that give rise to a nonlocal minimal graph over a ball of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We establish that the gradient of any such function is bounded in the interior of the ball by a power of its oscillation. This estimate, together with previously known results, leads to the $C^\infty$ regularity of the function in the ball. While the smoothness of nonlocal minimal graphs was known for $n = 1, 2$ (but without a quantitative bound), in higher dimensions only their continuity had been established. To prove the gradient bound, we …
The main goal of this article is to understand the trace properties of nonlocal minimal graphs in~$\R^3$, i.e. nonlocal minimal surfaces with a graphical structure. We establish that at any boundary points at which the trace from inside happens to coincide with the exterior datum, also the tangent planes of the traces necessarily coincide with those of the exterior datum. This very rigid geometric constraint is in sharp contrast with the case of the solutions of the linear equations driven by the fractional Laplacian, since we also show that, in this case, the fractional normal derivative can …
For any $α>0,$ we study $k^α$-type length-preserving and area-preserving nonlocal flow of convex closed plane curves and show that these two types of flow evolve such curves into round circles in $C^{\infty}% $-norm.$\ $Other relevant $k^α$-type nonlocal flow is also discussed when $α\geq1.\ $
We study stable solutions to the fractional Allen-Cahn equation \linebreak $(-Δ)^{s/2} u = u-u^3$, $|u|<1$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. For every $s\in (0,1)$ and dimension $n\geq 2$, we establish sharp energy estimates, density estimates, and the convergence of blow-downs to stable nonlocal $s$-minimal cones. As a consequence, we obtain a new classification result: if for some pair $(n,s)$, with $n\ge 3$, hyperplanes are the only stable nonlocal $s$-minimal cones in $\mathbb{R}^n\setminus\{0\}$, then every stable solution to the fractional Allen-Cahn equation in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is 1D, namely, its level …
We obtain a sharp quantitative isoperimetric inequality for nonlocal $s$-perimeters, uniform with respect to $s$ bounded away from $0$. This allows us to address local and global minimality properties of balls with respect to the volume-constrained minimization of a free energy consisting of a nonlocal $s$-perimeter plus a non-local repulsive interaction term. In the particular case $s =1$ the $s$-perimeter coincides with the classical perimeter, and our results improve the ones of Knüpfer and Muratov concerning minimality of balls of small volume in isoperimetric problems with a competition b…
We study the geometric flow of a planar curve driven by its curvature and the normal derivative of its capacity potential. Under a convexity condition that is natural to our problem, we establish long term existence and large time asymptotics of this flow.
The nonlocal $s$-fractional minimal surface equation for $Σ= \partial E$ where $E$ is an open set in $R^N$ is given by $$ H_Σ^ s (p) := \int_{R^N} \frac {χ_E(x) - χ_{E^c}(x)} {|x-p|^{N+s}}\, dx \ =\ 0 \quad \text{for all } p\in Σ. $$ Here $0<s<1$, $χ$ designates characteristic function, and the integral is understood in the principal value sense. The classical notion of minimal surface is recovered by letting $s\to 1$. In this paper we exhibit the first concrete examples (beyond the plane) of nonlocal $s-$minimal surfaces. When $s$ is close to $1$, we first construct a connected embedded $s$-m…
