The recent literature has intensively studied two classes of nonlocal variational problems, namely the ones related to the minimisation of energy functionals that act on functions in suitable Sobolev-Gagliardo spaces, and the ones related to the minimisation of fractional perimeters that act on measurable sets of the Euclidean space.
In this article, we relate these two types of variational problems. In particular, we investigate the connection between the nonlocal minimal surfaces and the minimisers of the $W^{s,1}$-seminorm.
In particular, we show that a function is a minimiser for the fractional seminorm if and only if its level sets are minimisers for the fractional perimeter, and that the characteristic function of a nonlocal minimal surface is a minimiser for the fractional seminorm; we also provide an existence result for minimisers of the fractional seminorm, an explicit non-uniqueness example for nonlocal minimal surfaces, and a Yin-Yang result describing the full and void patterns of nonlocal minimal surfaces.
We study a variational model for transition layers in thin ferromagnetic films with an underlying functional that combines an Allen-Cahn type structure with an additional nonlocal interaction term. The model represents the magnetisation by a map from $\mathbb{R}$ to $\mathbb{S}^1$. Thus it has a topological invariant in the form of a winding number, and we study minimisers subject to a prescribed winding number. As shown in our previous paper Ignat-Moser (JDE 2017), the nonlocal term gives rise to solutions that would not be present for a functional including only the (local) Allen-Cahn terms.…
In this note we study the behaviour as $s\to 0^+$ of some semigroup based Besov seminorms associated with a non-symmetric and hypoelliptic diffusion with a drift. Our results generalise a previous one of Maz'ya and Shaposhnikova for the classical fractional Sobolev spaces $W^{s,p}$, and they also underscore a new phenomenon caused by the presence of the drift.
The de Giorgi theory for minimal surfaces consists in studying sets whose indicator function is a (local) minimum of the BV norm. In this paper we replace the BV norm by the $H^σ$ norm, with $σ<1/2$, and try to understand what the minimisers look like. Parallel to the de Giorgi theory we prove that, if the boundary of a minimiser is sufficiently flat in the unit ball, then it is a smooth piece of hypersurface.
In this paper we consider nonlocal energies defined on probability measures in the plane, given by a convolution interaction term plus a quadratic confinement. The interaction kernel is $-\log|z|+α\, x^2/|z|^2, \; z=x+iy,$ with $-1 < α< 1.$ This kernel is anisotropic except for the Coulombic case $α=0.$ We present a short compact proof of the known surprising fact that the unique minimiser of the energy is the normalised characteristic function of the domain enclosed by an ellipse with horizontal semi-axis $\sqrt{1-α}$ and vertical semi-axis $\sqrt{1+α}.$ Letting $α\to 1^-$ we find that the se…
In this paper we characterise the minimisers of a one-parameter family of nonlocal and anisotropic energies $I_α$ defined on probability measures in $\R^n$, with $n\geq 3$. The energy $I_α$ consists of a purely nonlocal term of convolution type, whose interaction kernel reduces to the Coulomb potential for $α=0$ and is anisotropic otherwise, and a quadratic confinement. The two-dimensional case arises in the study of defects in metals and has been solved by the authors by means of complex-analysis techniques. We prove that for $α\in (-1, n-2]$, the minimiser of $I_α$ is unique and is the (norm…
We consider both the minimisation of a class of nonlocal interaction energies over non-negative measures with unit mass and a class of singular integral equations of the first kind of Fredholm type. Our setting covers applications to dislocation pile-ups, contact problems, fracture mechanics and random matrix theory. Our main result shows that both the minimisation problems and the related singular integral equations have the same unique solution, which provides new regularity results on the minimiser of the energy and new positivity results on the solutions to singular integral equations.
We study a class of integral functionals known as nonlocal perimeters, which, intuitively, express a weighted interaction between a set and its complement. The weight is provided by a positive kernel K, which might be singular. In the first part of the paper, we show that these functionals are indeed perimeters in a generalised sense and we establish existence of minimisers for the corresponding Plateau problem. Also, when K is radial and strictly decreasing, we prove that halfspaces are minimisers if we prescribe flat boundary conditions. A Gamma-convergence result is discussed in the second …
In this paper we characterise the minimiser for a class of nonlocal perturbations of the Coulomb energy. We show that the minimiser is the normalised characteristic function of an ellipsoid, under the assumption that the perturbation kernel has the same homogeneity as the Coulomb potential, is even, smooth off the origin and sufficiently small. This result can be seen as the stability of ellipsoids as energy minimisers, since the minimiser of the Coulomb energy is the normalised characteristic function of a ball.
We consider a nonlocal functional $J_K$ that may be regarded as a nonlocal version of the total variation. More precisely, for any measurable function $u\colon \mathbb{R}^d \to \mathbb{R}$, we define $J_K(u)$ as the integral of weighted differences of $u$. The weight is encoded by a positive kernel $K$, possibly singular in the origin. We study the minimisation of this energy under prescribed boundary conditions, and we introduce a notion of calibration suited for this nonlocal problem. Our first result shows that the existence of a calibration is a sufficient condition for a function to be a …
We prove some basic inequalities relating the Gagliardo-Nirenberg seminorms of a symmetric function $u$ on $\mathbb R^n$ and of its perturbation $uφ_μ$, where $φ_μ$ is a suitably chosen eigenfunction of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the sphere $\mathbb S^{n-1}$, thus providing a technical but rather powerful tool to detect symmetry breaking and multiplicity phenomena in variational equations driven by the fractional Laplace operator. A concrete application to a problem related to the fractional Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality is given.
We study $s$-fractional $p$-Laplacian type equations with discontinuous kernel coefficients in divergence form to establish $W^{s+σ,q}$ estimates for any choice of pairs $( σ,q)$ with $q\in(p,\infty)$ and $σ\in\left(0,\min\left\{\frac{s}{p-1},1-s\right\}\right)$ under the assumption that the associated kernel coefficients have small BMO seminorms near the diagonal. As a consequence, we find in the literature an optimal fractional Sobolev regularity of such a non-homogeneous nonlocal equation when the right-hand side is presented by a suitable fractional operator. Our results are new even in th…
We study energy functionals obtained by adding a possibly discontinuous potential to an interaction term modeled upon a Gagliardo-type fractional seminorm. We prove that minimizers of such non-differentiable functionals are locally bounded, Hölder continuous, and that they satisfy a suitable Harnack inequality. Hence, we provide an extension of celebrated results of M. Giaquinta and E. Giusti to the nonlocal setting. To do this, we introduce a particular class of fractional Sobolev functions, reminiscent of that considered by E. De Giorgi in his seminal paper of 1957. The flexibility of these …
Given~$s,σ\in(0,1)$ and a bounded domain~$Ω\subset\R^n$, we consider the following minimization problem of $s$-Dirichlet plus $σ$-perimeter type $$ [u]_{ H^s(\R^{2n}\setminus(Ω^c)^2) } + \Per_σ\left(\{u>0\},Ω\right), $$ where~$[ \cdot]_{H^s}$ is the fractional Gagliardo seminorm and $\Per_σ$ is the fractional perimeter. Among other results, we prove a monotonicity formula for the minimizers, glueing lemmata, uniform energy bounds, convergence results, a regularity theory for the planar cones and a trivialization result for the flat case. Several classical free boundary problems are limit cases…
We study quadratic functionals on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ that generate seminorms in the fractional Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb{R}^d)$ for $0 < s < 1$. The functionals under consideration appear in the study of Markov jump processes and, independently, in recent research on the Boltzmann equation. The functional measures differentiability of a function $f$ in a similar way as the seminorm of $H^s(\mathbb{R}^d)$. The major difference is that differences $f(y) - f(x)$ are taken into account only if $y$ lies in some double cone with apex at $x$ or vice versa. The configuration of double cones is allow…
Recently Frank and Seiringer have shown an isoperimetric inequality for nonlocal perimeter functionals arising from Sobolev seminorms of fractional order. This isoperimetric inequality is improved here in a quantitative form.
In this paper we prove a fractional analogue of the classical Korn's first inequality. The inequality makes it possible to show the equivalence of a function space of vector field characterized by a Gagliardo-type seminorm with 'projected difference' with that of a corresponding fractional Sobolev space. As an application, we will use it to obtain a Caccioppoli-type inequality for a nonlinear system of nonlocal equations, which in turn is a key ingredient in applying known results to prove a higher fractional differentiability result for weak solutions of the nonlinear system of nonlocal equat…
In this paper we extend, for the first time, part of the Weierstrass extremal field theory in the Calculus of Variations to a nonlocal framework. Our model case is the energy functional for the fractional Laplacian (the Gagliardo-Sobolev seminorm), for which such a theory was still unknown. We build a null-Lagrangian and a calibration for nonlinear equations involving the fractional Laplacian in the presence of a field of extremals. Thus, our construction assumes the existence of a family of solutions to the Euler-Lagrange equation whose graphs produce a foliation. Then, the minimality of each…
We introduce a notion of fractional Laplacian for functions which grow more than linearly at infinity. In such case, the operator is not defined in the classical sense: nevertheless, we can give an ad-hoc definition which can be useful for applications in various fields, such as blowup and free boundary problems. In this setting, when the solution has a polynomial growth at infinity, the right hand side of the equation is not just a function, but an equivalence class of functions modulo polynomials of a fixed order. We also give a sharp version of the Schauder estimates in this framework, in w…
