We discuss the $Γ$-convergence, under the appropriate scaling, of the energy functional $$ \|u\|_{H^s(Ω)}^2+\int_ΩW(u)dx,$$ with $s \in (0,1)$, where $\|u\|_{H^s(Ω)}$ denotes the total contribution from $Ω$ in the $H^s$ norm of $u$, and $W$ is a double-well potential.
When $s\in [1/2,\,1)$, we show that the energy $Γ$-converges to the classical minimal surface functional -- while, when $s\in(0,\,1/2)$, it is easy to see that the functional $Γ$-converges to the nonlocal minimal surface functional.
This paper deals with a singular nonlocal phase field system of conserved type.Colli--K.\ [Nonlinear Anal.\ 190 (2020)] have derived existence of solutions to a singular phase field system of conserved type. On the other hand, Davoli--Scarpa--Trussardi [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal.\ 239 (2021)] have studied nonlocal to local convergence of Cahn-Hilliard equations. In this paper we prove existence of solutions to a nonlocal singular phase field system of conserved type whose kernel is not $W^{1, 1}$ and focus on nonlocal to local convergence of singular phase field systems of conserved type.
We study sequences of nonlocal quadratic forms and function spaces that are related to Markov jump processes in bounded domains with a Lipschitz boundary. Our aim is to show the convergence of these forms to local quadratic forms of gradient type. Under suitable conditions we establish the convergence in the sense of Mosco. Our framework allows bounded and unbounded nonlocal operators to be studied at the same time. Moreover, we prove that smooth functions with compact support are dense in the nonlocal function spaces under consideration.
This is a follow-up of a paper by Fernández-Bonder-Ritorto-Salort [8], where the classical concept of $H$-convergence was extended to fractional \(p\)-Laplace type operators. In this short paper we provide an explicit characterization of this notion by demonstrating that the weak-* convergence of the coefficients is an equivalent condition for $H$-convergence of the sequence of nonlocal operators. This result takes advantage of nonlocality and is in stark contrast to the local p-Laplacian case
In this work we obtain a compactness result for the $H-$convergence of a family of nonlocal and nonlinear monotone elliptic-type problems by means of Tartar's method of oscillating test functions.
In this note we prove that appropriately scaled threshold dynamics-type algorithms corresponding to the fractional Laplacian of order $α\in (0,2)$ converge to moving fronts. When $α\geqq 1$ the resulting interface moves by weighted mean curvature, while for $α<1$ the normal velocity is nonlocal of ``fractional-type.'' The results easily extend to general nonlocal anisotropic threshold dynamics schemes.
In this paper we provide a rate of convergence for periodic homogenization of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations with nonlocal diffusion. The result is based on the regularity of the associated effective problem, where the convexity plays a crucial role. Such regularity estimates are possible from the available literature once we provide a representation formula for the effective Hamiltonian, a result that has an independent interest.
We establish the $Γ$-convergence of some energy functionals describing nonlocal attractive interactions in bounded domains. The interaction potential solves an elliptic equation (local or nonlocal) in the bounded domain and the primary interest of our results is to identify the effects that the boundary conditions imposed on the potential have on the limiting functional. We consider general Robin boundary conditions, which include Dirichlet and Neumann conditions as particular cases. Depending on the order of the elliptic operator the limiting functional involves the usual perimeter or some fr…

We consider nonlocal curvature functionals associated with positive interaction kernels, and we show that local anisotropic mean curvature functionals can be retrieved in a blow-up limit from them. As a consequence, we prove that the viscosity solutions to the rescaled nonlocal geometric flows locally uniformly converge to the viscosity solution to the anisotropic mean curvature motion. The result is achieved by combining a compactness argument and a set-theoretic approach related to the theory of De Giorgi's barriers for evolution equations.
We study a non local approximation of the Gaussian perimeter, proving the Gamma convergence to the local one. Surprisingly, in contrast with the local setting, the halfspace turns out to be a volume constrained stationary point if and only if the boundary hyperplane passes through the origin. In particular, this implies that Ehrhard symmetrization can in general increase the considered non local Gaussian perimeter.
We consider a class of nonlocal viscous Cahn-Hilliard equations with Neumann boundary conditions for the chemical potential. The double-well potential is allowed to be singular (e.g. of logarithmic type), while the singularity of the convolution kernel does not fall in any available existence theory under Neumann boundary conditions. We prove well-posedness for the nonlocal equation in a suitable variational sense. Secondly, we show that the solutions to the nonlocal equation converge to the corresponding solutions to the local equation, as the convolution kernels approximate a Dirac delta. Th…
Consider a nonlocal conservation where the flux function depends on the convolution of the solution with a given kernel. In the singular local limit obtained by letting the convolution kernel converge to the Dirac delta one formally recovers a conservation law. However, recent counter-examples show that in general the solutions of the nonlocal equations do not converge to a solution of the conservation law. In this work we focus on nonlocal conservation laws modeling vehicular traffic: in this case, the convolution kernel is anisotropic. We show that, under fairly general assumptions on the (a…
We consider the mass conserving Allen-Cahn equation proposed in \cite{Bra-Bre}: the Lagrange multiplier which ensures the conservation of the mass contains not only nonlocal but also local effects (in contrast with \cite{Che-Hil-Log}). As a parameter related to the thickness of a diffuse internal layer tends to zero, we perform formal asymptotic expansions of the solutions. Then, equipped with these approximate solutions, we rigorously prove the convergence to the volume preserving mean curvature flow, under the assumption that classical solutions of the latter exist. This requires a precise a…
Inspired by numerical studies of the aggregation equation, we study the effect of regularization on nonlocal interaction energies. We consider energies defined via a repulsive-attractive interaction kernel, regularized by convolution with a mollifier. We prove that, with respect to the 2-Wasserstein metric, the regularized energies $Γ$-converge to the unregularized energy and minimizers converge to minimizers. We then apply our results to prove $Γ$-convergence of the gradient flows, when restricted to the space of measures with bounded density.
We prove convergence of suitable subsequences of weak solutions of a diffuse interface model for the two-phase flow of incompressible fluids with different densities with a nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation to weak solutions of the corresponding system with a standard "local" Cahn-Hilliard equation. The analysis is done in the case of a sufficiently smooth bounded domain with no-slip boundary condition for the velocity and Neumann boundary conditions for the Cahn-Hilliard equation. The proof is based on the corresponding result in the case of a single Cahn-Hilliard equation and compactness argum…
We study monotone numerical schemes for nonlocal Isaacs equations, the dynamic programming equations of stochastic differential games with jump-diffusion state processes. These equations are fully-nonlinear non-convex equations of order less than $2$. In this paper they are also allowed to be degenerate and have non-smooth solutions. The main contribution is a series of new a priori error estimates: The first results for nonlocal Isaacs equations, the first general results for degenerate non-convex equations of order greater than $1$, and the first results in the viscosity solution setting giv…

In this paper we prove the convergence of a nonlocal version of the Cahn-Hilliard equation to its local counterpart as the nonlocal convolution kernel is scaled using suitable approximations of a Dirac delta in a periodic boundary conditions setting. This convergence result strongly relies on the dynamics of the problem. More precisely, the $H^{-1}$-gradient flow structure of the equation allows to deduce uniform $H^1$ estimates for solutions of the nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation and, together with a Poincaré type inequality by Ponce, provides the compactness argument that allows to prove the…
We consider a general class of convolution-type nonlocal wave equations modeling bidirectional propagation of nonlinear waves in a continuous medium. In the limit of vanishing nonlocality we study the behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem. We prove that, as the kernel functions of the convolution integral approach the Dirac delta function, the solutions converge strongly to the corresponding solutions of the classical elasticity equation. An energy estimate with no loss of derivative plays a critical role in proving the convergence result. As a typical example, we consider the continuous…
In this paper we analyze the asymptotic behavior of several fractional eigenvalue problems by means of Gamma-convergence methods. This method allows us to treat different eigenvalue problems under a unified framework. We are able to recover some known results for the behavior of the eigenvalues of the $p-$fractional laplacian when the fractional parameter $s$ goes to 1, and to extend some known results for the behavior of the same eigenvalue problem when $p$ goes to $\infty$. Finally we analyze other eigenvalue problems not previously covered in the literature.
Nonlocal conservation laws (the signature feature being that the flux function depends on the solution through the convolution with a given kernel) are extensively used in the modeling of vehicular traffic. In this work we discuss the singular local limit, namely the convergence of the nonlocal solutions to the entropy admissible solution of the conservation law obtained by replacing the convolution kernel with a Dirac delta. Albeit recent counter-examples rule out convergence in the general case, in the specific framework of traffic models (with anisotropic convolution kernels) the singular l…
In this note we consider the pointwise convergence to the initial data for the solutions of some nonlocal dyadic Schrödinger equations on spaces of homogeneous type. We prove the a.e. convergence when the initial data belongs to a dyadic version of an $L^2$ based Besov space.
We introduce the concept of nonlocal $H$-convergence. For this we employ the theory of abstract closed complexes of operators in Hilbert spaces. We show uniqueness of the nonlocal $H$-limit as well as a corresponding compactness result. Moreover, we provide a characterisation of the introduced concept, which implies that local and nonlocal $H$-convergence coincide for multiplication operators. We provide applications to both nonlocal and nonperiodic fully time-dependent 3D Maxwell's equations on rough domains. The material law for Maxwell's equations may also rapidly oscillate between eddy cur…
We prove the local minimality of halfspaces in Carnot groups for a class of nonlocal functionals usually addressed as nonlocal perimeters. Moreover, in a class of Carnot groups in which the De Giorgi's rectifiability Theorem holds, we provide a lower bound for the $Γ$-liminf of the rescaled energy in terms of the horizontal perimeter.
Simple applications of a principle of minimum energy and the property of monotonicity for the corresponding non-local operator, have allowed a direct proof of the G-compactness in a weak sense, as well as in the strong sense. The definitions of H-convergence and G-convergence, weak or strong, have been proved to be equivalent.
The nonlocal Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation arises in the modeling of the flow of a thin film of viscous liquid falling down an inclined plane, subject to an applied electric field. In this paper, the authors show that, as the coefficient of the nonlocal integral term goes to zero, the solution trajectories and the maximal attractor of the nonlocal Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation converge to those of the usual Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation.
We study the flow generated by an incompressible viscoelastic fluid in a fractured porous medium. The model consists of a fluid flow governed by Stokes-Volterra equations evolving in a periodic double-porosity medium. Using the multiscale convergence method associated to some recent tools about the convergence of convolution sequences, we show that the equivalent macroscopic model is of the same type as the microscopic one, but in a fixed domain.
It is known that solutions of nonlocal dispersal evolution equations do not become smoother in space as time elapses. This lack of space regularity would cause a lot of difficulties in studying transition fronts in nonlocal equations. In the present paper, we establish some general criteria concerning space regularity of transition fronts in nonlocal dispersal evolution equations with a large class of nonlinearities, which allows the applicability of various techniques for reaction-diffusion equations to nonlocal equation, and hence serves as an initial and fundamental step for further studyin…
We study the rate of convergence of some nonlocal functionals recently considered by Bourgain, Brezis and Mironescu. In particular we establish the $Γ$-convergence of the corresponding rate functionals, suitably rescaled, to a limit functional of second order.
Existence and uniqueness of solutions for nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equations with degenerate potential is shown. The nonlocality is described by means of a symmetric singular kernel not falling within the framework of any previous existence theory. A convection term is also taken into account. Building upon this novel existence result, we prove convergence of solutions for this class of nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equations to their local counterparts, as the nonlocal convolution kernels approximate a Dirac delta. Eventually, we show that, under suitable assumptions on the data, the solutions to the …
We obtain the classification of certain global bounded solutions for semilinear nonlocal equations of the type $$\triangle^s u=W'(u)$$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$,with $s \in (1/2 ,1),$ where $W$ is a double well potential.
In this paper we deal with the stability of solutions of fractional $p-$Laplace problems with nonlinear sources when the fractional parameter $s$ goes to 1. We prove a general convergence result for general weak solutions which is applied to study the convergence of ground state solutions of $p-$fractional problems in bounded and unbounded domains as $s$ goes to 1. Moreover, our result applies to treat the stability of $p-$fractional eigenvalues as $s$ goes to 1.
We consider a core-radius approach to nonlocal perimeters governed by isotropic kernels having critical and supercritical exponents, extending the nowadays classical notion of $s$-fractional perimeter, defined for $0<s<1$, to the case $s\ge 1$\,. We show that, as the core-radius vanishes, such core-radius regularized $s$-fractional perimeters, suitably scaled, $Γ$-converge to the standard Euclidean perimeter. Under the same scaling, the first variation of such nonlocal perimeters gives back regularized $s$-fractional curvatures which, as the core radius vanishes, converge to the standard mean …
We investigate the behavior, as a small parameter tends to zero, of a nonlocal Allen-Cahn equation. Given a rather general initial data, we perform a rigorous analysis of both the generation and the motion of interface, and obtain a new estimate for its thickness. The limit problem involves motion by mean curvature together with a nonlocal effect (which allows the possibility of nontrivial stationary state).
In this paper we extend the results of \cite{S3} to the borderline case $s = \frac 12$. We obtain the classification of global bounded solutions with asymptotically flat level sets for semilinear nonlocal equations of the type $$Δ^{\frac 12} u=W'(u) \quad \text{in} \quad R^n,$$ where $W$ is a double well potential.
We study the approximation of the nonlocal-interaction equation restricted to a compact manifold $\mathcal{M}$ embedded in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and more generally compact sets with positive reach (i.e. prox-regular sets). We show that the equation on $\mathcal{M}$ can be approximated by the classical nonlocal-interaction equation on $\mathbb{R}^d$ by adding an external potential which strongly attracts to $\mathcal{M}$. The proof relies on the Sandier--Serfaty approach to the $Γ$-convergence of gradient flows. As a by-product, we recover well-posedness for the nonlocal-interaction equation on $\mat…
We investigate the nonlocal version of the Abels-Garcke-Grün (AGG) system, which describes the motion of a mixture of two viscous incompressible fluids. This consists of the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard system characterized by concentration-dependent density and viscosity, and an additional flux term due to interface diffusion. In particular, the Cahn-Hilliard dynamics of the concentration (phase-field) is governed by the aggregation/diffusion competition of the nonlocal Helmholtz free energy with singular (logarithmic) potential and constant mobility. We first prove the existenc…
