Inspired by numerical studies of the aggregation equation, we study the effect of regularization on nonlocal interaction energies. We consider energies defined via a repulsive-attractive interaction kernel, regularized by convolution with a mollifier. We prove that, with respect to the 2-Wasserstein metric, the regularized energies $Γ$-converge to the unregularized energy and minimizers converge to minimizers. We then apply our results to prove $Γ$-convergence of the gradient flows, when restricted to the space of measures with bounded density.
We study the stability and instability of periodic traveling waves in the vicinity of the origin in the spectral plane, for equations of Benjamin- Bona-Mahony (BBM) and regularized Boussinesq types permitting nonlocal dispersion. We extend recent results for equations of Korteweg-de Vries type and derive modulational instability indices as functions of the wave number of the underlying wave. We show that a sufficiently small, periodic traveling wave of the BBM equation is spectrally unstable to long wavelength perturbations if the wave number is greater than a critical value and a sufficiently…
We investigate which nonlocal-interaction energies have a ground state (global minimizer). We consider this question over the space of probability measures and establish a sharp condition for the existence of ground states. We show that this condition is closely related to the notion of stability (i.e. $H$-stability) of pairwise interaction potentials. Our approach uses the direct method of the calculus of variations.
We consider a core-radius approach to nonlocal perimeters governed by isotropic kernels having critical and supercritical exponents, extending the nowadays classical notion of $s$-fractional perimeter, defined for $0<s<1$, to the case $s\ge 1$\,. We show that, as the core-radius vanishes, such core-radius regularized $s$-fractional perimeters, suitably scaled, $Γ$-converge to the standard Euclidean perimeter. Under the same scaling, the first variation of such nonlocal perimeters gives back regularized $s$-fractional curvatures which, as the core radius vanishes, converge to the standard mean …
Nonlocal gradient operators are prototypical nonlocal differential operators thatare very important in the studies of nonlocal models. One of the simplest variational settings for such studies is the nonlocal Dirichlet energies wherein the energy densities are quadratic in the nonlocal gradients. There have been earlier studies to illuminate the link between the coercivity of the Dirichlet energies and the interaction strengths of radially symmetric kernels that constitute nonlocal gradient operators in the form of integral operators. In this work we adopt a different perspective and focus on …
We prove existence of weak solutions for a diffuse interface model for the flow of two viscous incompressible Newtonian fluids with different densities in a bounded domain in two and three space dimensions. In contrast to previous works, we study a model with a singular non-local free energy, which controls the $H^{α/2}$-norm of the volume fraction. We show existence of weak solutions for large times with the aid of an implicit time discretization.
We consider here a nonlocal phase transition energy in a periodic medium and we construct solutions whose interfaces lie at a bounded distance from any given hyperplane. These solutions are either periodic or quasiperiodic, depending on the rational dependency of the normal direction to the reference hyperplane. Remarkably, the oscillations of the interfaces with respect to the reference hyperplane are bounded by a universal constant times the periodicity scale of the medium. This geometric property allows us to establish, in the limit, the existence of planelike nonlocal minimal surfaces in a…
We obtain a sharp quantitative isoperimetric inequality for nonlocal $s$-perimeters, uniform with respect to $s$ bounded away from $0$. This allows us to address local and global minimality properties of balls with respect to the volume-constrained minimization of a free energy consisting of a nonlocal $s$-perimeter plus a non-local repulsive interaction term. In the particular case $s =1$ the $s$-perimeter coincides with the classical perimeter, and our results improve the ones of Knüpfer and Muratov concerning minimality of balls of small volume in isoperimetric problems with a competition b…
We study a discrete approximation of functionals depending on nonlocal gradients. The discretized functionals are proved to be coercive in classical Sobolev spaces
This note concerns the problem of minimizing a certain family of non-local energy functionals over measures on $\mathbb{R}^n$, subject to a mass constraint, in a strong attraction limit. In these problems, the total energy is an integral over pair interactions of attractive-repulsive type. The interaction kernel is a sum of competing power law potentials with attractive powers $α\in (0, \infty)$ and repulsive powers associated with Riesz potentials. The strong attraction limit $α\to \infty$ is addressed via Gamma-convergence, and minimizers of the limit are characterized in terms of an isodiam…
Over the past fifteen years, the theory of Wasserstein gradient flows of convex (or, more generally, semiconvex) energies has led to advances in several areas of partial differential equations and analysis. In this work, we extend the well-posedness theory for Wasserstein gradient flows to energies satisfying a more general criterion for uniqueness, motivated by the Osgood criterion for ordinary differential equations. We also prove the first quantitative estimates on convergence of the discrete gradient flow or "JKO scheme" outside of the semiconvex case. We conclude by applying these results…
We consider a Cahn-Hilliard equation which is the conserved gradient flow of a nonlocal total free energy functional. This functional is characterized by a Helmholtz free energy density, which can be of logarithmic type. Moreover, the spatial interactions between the different phases are modeled by a singular kernel. As a consequence, the chemical potential $μ$ contains an integral operator acting on the concentration difference $c$, instead of the usual Laplace operator. We analyze the equation on a bounded domain subject to no-flux boundary condition for $μ$ and by assuming constant mobility…
We consider a system of $n$ nonlocal interaction evolution equations on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with a differentiable matrix-valued interaction potential $W$. Under suitable conditions on convexity, symmetry and growth of $W$, we prove $λ$-geodesic convexity for some $λ\in\mathbb{R}$ of the associated interaction energy with respect to a weighted compound distance of Wasserstein type. In particular, this implies existence and uniqueness of solutions to the evolution system. In one spatial dimension, we further analyse the qualitative properties of this solution in the non-uniformly convex case. We obta…
We develop a theory of existence of minimizers of energy functionals in vectorial problems based on a nonlocal gradient under Dirichlet boundary conditions. The model shares many features with the peridynamics model and is also applicable to nonlocal solid mechanics, especially nonlinear elasticity. This nonlocal gradient was introduced in an earlier work, inspired by Riesz' fractional gradient, but suitable for bounded domains. The main assumption on the integrand of the energy is polyconvexity. Thus, we adapt the corresponding results of the classical case to this nonlocal context, notably, …

We study the rate of convergence of some nonlocal functionals recently considered by Bourgain, Brezis and Mironescu. In particular we establish the $Γ$-convergence of the corresponding rate functionals, suitably rescaled, to a limit functional of second order.
We explore the possibility of modifying the classical Gauss free energy functional used in capillarity theory by considering surface tension energies of nonlocal type. The corresponding variational principles lead to new equilibrium conditions which are compared to the mean curvature equation and Young's law found in classical capillarity theory. As a special case of this family of problems we recover a nonlocal relative isoperimetric problem of geometric interest.
In this paper we consider minimizers for nonlocal energy functionals generalizing elastic energies that are connected with the theory of peridynamics \cite{Silling2000} or nonlocal diffusion models \cite{Rossi}. We derive nonlocal versions of the Euler-Lagrange equations under two sets of growth assumptions for the integrand. Existence of minimizers is shown for integrands with joint convexity (in the function and nonlocal gradient components). By using the convolution structure we show regularity of solutions for certain Euler-Lagrange equations. No growth assumptions are needed for the exist…

In this paper we consider nonlocal energies defined on probability measures in the plane, given by a convolution interaction term plus a quadratic confinement. The interaction kernel is $-\log|z|+α\, x^2/|z|^2, \; z=x+iy,$ with $-1 < α< 1.$ This kernel is anisotropic except for the Coulombic case $α=0.$ We present a short compact proof of the known surprising fact that the unique minimiser of the energy is the normalised characteristic function of the domain enclosed by an ellipse with horizontal semi-axis $\sqrt{1-α}$ and vertical semi-axis $\sqrt{1+α}.$ Letting $α\to 1^-$ we find that the se…
The seminal results of Bourgain, Brezis, Mironescu and Dávila show that the classical perimeter can be approximated by a family of nonlocal perimeter functionals. We consider a corresponding second order expansion for the nonlocal perimeter functional. In a special case, the considered family of energies is also relevant for a variational model for thin ferromagnetic films. We derive the Gamma--limit of these functionals. We also show existence for minimizers with prescribed volume fraction. For small volume fraction, the unique, up to translation, minimizer of the limit energy is given by the…
This paper studies the derivation of the quadratic porous medium equation and a class of cross-diffusion systems from nonlocal interactions. We prove convergence of solutions of a nonlocal interaction equation, resp. system, to solutions of the quadratic porous medium equation, resp. cross-diffusion system, in the limit of a localising interaction kernel. The analysis is carried out at the level of the (nonlocal) partial differential equations and we use gradient flow techniques to derive bounds on energy, second order moments, and logarithmic entropy. The dissipation of the latter yields suff…
We consider both the minimisation of a class of nonlocal interaction energies over non-negative measures with unit mass and a class of singular integral equations of the first kind of Fredholm type. Our setting covers applications to dislocation pile-ups, contact problems, fracture mechanics and random matrix theory. Our main result shows that both the minimisation problems and the related singular integral equations have the same unique solution, which provides new regularity results on the minimiser of the energy and new positivity results on the solutions to singular integral equations.
In this paper we characterise the minimisers of a one-parameter family of nonlocal and anisotropic energies $I_α$ defined on probability measures in $\R^n$, with $n\geq 3$. The energy $I_α$ consists of a purely nonlocal term of convolution type, whose interaction kernel reduces to the Coulomb potential for $α=0$ and is anisotropic otherwise, and a quadratic confinement. The two-dimensional case arises in the study of defects in metals and has been solved by the authors by means of complex-analysis techniques. We prove that for $α\in (-1, n-2]$, the minimiser of $I_α$ is unique and is the (norm…
We study a geometric variational problem for sets in the plane in which the perimeter and a regularized dipolar interaction compete under a mass constraint. In contrast to previously studied nonlocal isoperimetric problems, here the nonlocal term asymptotically localizes and contributes to the perimeter term to leading order. We establish existence of generalized minimizers for all values of the dipolar strength, mass and regularization cutoff and give conditions for existence of classical minimizers. For subcritical dipolar strengths we prove that the limiting functional is a renormalized per…
We prove that that for nonlinear elastic energies with strong enough energetic control of the outer distortion of admissible deformations, almost everywhere global invertibility as constraint can be obtained in the $Γ$-limit of the elastic energy with an added nonlocal self-repulsion term with asymptocially vanishing coefficient. The self-repulsion term considered here formally coincides with a Sobolev-Slobodeckiĭ seminorm of the inverse deformation. Variants near the boundary or on the surface of the domain are also studied.
We study a variational model from micromagnetics involving a nonlocal Ginzburg-Landau type energy for S^1-valued vector fields. These vector fields form domain walls, called Neel walls, that correspond to one-dimensional transitions between two directions within the unit circle S^1. Due to the nonlocality of the energy, a Neel wall is a two length scale object, comprising a core and two logarithmically decaying tails. Our aim is to determine the energy differences leading to repulsion or attraction between Neel walls. In contrast to the usual Ginzburg-Landau vortices, we obtain a renormalised …
We consider dynamics driven by interaction energies on graphs. We introduce graph analogues of the continuum nonlocal-interaction equation and interpret them as gradient flows with respect to a graph Wasserstein distance. The particular Wasserstein distance we consider arises from the graph analogue of the Benamou-Brenier formulation where the graph continuity equation uses an upwind interpolation to define the density along the edges. While this approach has both theoretical and computational advantages, the resulting distance is only a quasi-metric. We investigate this quasi-metric both on g…
We uncover the gradient structure to investigate the convergence of solutions in nonlocal nonlinear dynamical systems. Mainly but not exclusively, we use the Lojasiewicz inequality to prove convergence results in various spaces with continuous, or discrete temporal domain, and finite, or infinite dimensional spatial domain. To be more specific, we analyze Lotka-Volterra type dynamics and concentration-dispersion dynamics. Lotka-Volterra equations describe the population dynamics of a group of species. Under the assumption that the interaction between species is symmetric, we present two differ…
