We discuss in this note the stickiness phenomena for nonlocal minimal surfaces. Classical minimal surfaces in convex domains do not stick to the boundary of the domain, hence examples of stickiness can be obtained only by removing the assumption of convexity. On the other hand, in the nonlocal framework, stickiness is "generic". We provide various examples from the literature, and focus on the case of complete stickiness in highly nonlocal regimes.
We show that arbitrarily small antisymmetric perturbations of the zero function are sufficient to produce the stickiness phenomenon for planar nonlocal minimal graphs (with the same quantitative bounds obtained for the case of even symmetric perturbations, up to multiplicative constants). In proving this result, one also establishes an odd symmetric version of the maximum principle for nonlocal minimal graphs, according to which the odd symmetric minimizer is positive in the direction of the positive bump and negative in the direction of the negative bump.
We consider nonlocal minimal surfaces in a cylinder with prescribed datum given by the complement of a slab. We show that when the width of the slab is large the minimizers are disconnected and when the width of the slab is small the minimizers are connected. This feature is in agreement with the classical case of the minimal surfaces. Nevertheless, we show that when the width of the slab is large the minimizers are not flat discs, as it happens in the classical setting, and, in particular, in dimension $2$ we provide a quantitative bound on the stickiness property exhibited by the minimizers.…
In this paper, we consider the asymptotic behavior of the fractional mean curvature when $s\to 0^+$. Moreover, we deal with the behavior of $s$-minimal surfaces when the fractional parameter $s\in(0,1)$ is small, in a bounded and connected open set with $C^2$ boundary $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$. We classify the behavior of $s$-minimal surfaces with respect to the fixed exterior data (i.e. the $s$-minimal set fixed outside of $Ω$). So, for $s$ small and depending on the data at infinity, the $s$-minimal set can be either empty in $Ω$, fill all $Ω$, or possibly develop a wildly oscillating boundary…
In this note, we showcase some recent results concerning the stickiness properties of nonlocal minimal graphs in the plane. To start with, the nonlocal minimal graphs in the plane enjoy an enhanced boundary regularity, since boundary continuity with respect to the external datum is sufficient to ensure differentiability across the boundary of the domain. As a matter of fact, the Hölder exponent of the derivative is in this situation sufficiently high to provide the validity of the Euler-Lagrange equation at boundary points as well. From this, using a sliding method, one also deduces that the s…
We prove that nonlocal minimal graphs in the plane exhibit generically stickiness effects and boundary discontinuities. More precisely, we show that if a nonlocal minimal graph in a slab is continuous up to the boundary, then arbitrarily small perturbations of the far-away data produce boundary discontinuities. Hence, either a nonlocal minimal graph is discontinuous at the boundary, or a small perturbation of the prescribed conditions produces boundary discontinuities. The proof relies on a sliding method combined with a fine boundary regularity analysis, based on a discontinuity/smoothness al…
We are interested in the threshold phenomena for propagation in nonlocal diffusion equations with some compactly supported initial data. In the so-called bistable and ignition cases, we provide the first quantitative estimates for such phenomena. The outcomes dramatically depend on the tails of the dispersal kernel and can take a large variety of different forms. The strategy is to combine sharp estimates of the tails of the sum of i.i.d. random variables (coming, in particular, from large deviation theory) and the construction of accurate sub-and super-solutions.
We study the mathematical theory of second order systems with two species, arising in the dynamics of interacting particles subject to linear damping, to nonlocal forces and to external ones, and resulting into a nonlocal version of the compressible Euler system with linear damping. Our results are limited to the $1$ space dimensional case but allow for initial data taken in a Wasserstein space of probability measures. We first consider the case of smooth nonlocal interaction potentials, not subject to any symmetry condition, and prove existence and uniqueness. The concept of solutions relies …
This paper is concerned with the spatial propagation of nonlocal dispersal equations with bistable or multistable nonlinearity in exterior domains. We obtain the existence and uniqueness of an entire solution which behaves like a planar wave front as time goes to negative infinity. In particular, some disturbances on the profile of the entire solution happen as the entire solution comes to the interior domain. But the disturbances disappear as the entire solution is far away from the interior domain. Furthermore, we prove that the solution can gradually recover its planar wave profile and cont…
We consider a nonlocal semi-linear parabolic equation on a connected exterior domain of the form $\mathbb{R}^N\setminus K$, where $K\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ is a compact "obstacle". The model we study is motivated by applications in biology and takes into account long range dispersal events that may be anisotropic depending on how a given population perceives the environment. To formulate this in a meaningful manner, we introduce a new theoretical framework which is of both mathematical and biological interest. The main goal of this paper is to construct an entire solution that behaves like a plan…
In this paper, we propose and analyze a finite element discretization for the computation of fractional minimal graphs of order~$s \in (0,1/2)$ on a bounded domain $Ω$. Such a Plateau problem of order $s$ can be reinterpreted as a Dirichlet problem for a nonlocal, nonlinear, degenerate operator of order $s + 1/2$. We prove that our numerical scheme converges in $W^{2r}_1(Ω)$ for all $r<s$, where $W^{2s}_1(Ω)$ is closely related to the natural energy space. Moreover, we introduce a geometric notion of error that, for any pair of $H^1$ functions, in the limit $s \to 1/2$ recovers a weighted $L^2…
We discuss fattening phenomenon for the evolution of planar curves according to their nonlocal curvature. More precisely, we consider a class of generalized curvatures which correspond to the first variation of suitable nonlocal perimeter functionals, defined in terms of an interaction kernel $K$, which is symmetric, nonnegative, possibly singular at the origin, and satisfies appropriate integrability conditions. We prove a general result about uniqueness of the geometric evolutions starting from regular sets with positive $K$-curvature and we discuss the fattening phenomenon for the evolution…
The nonlocal world presents an abundance of surprises and wonders to discover. These special properties of the nonlocal world are usually the consequence of long-range interactions, which, especially in presence of geometric structures and nonlinear phenomena, end up producing a variety of novel patterns. We will briefly discuss some of these features, focusing on the case of (non)local minimal surfaces, (non)local phase coexistence models, and (non)local geometric flows.
Pulsating fronts for nonlocal dispersion and KPP nonlinearity

We derive the solution representation for a large class of nonlocal boundary value problems for linear evolution PDEs with constant coefficients in one space variable. The prototypical such PDE is the heat equation, for which problems of this form model physical phenomena in chemistry and for which we formulate and prove a full result. We also consider the third order case, which is much less studied and has been shown by the authors to have very different structural properties in general. The nonlocal conditions we consider can be reformulated as \emph{multipoint conditions}, and then an expl…
This work investigates a nonlocal sinh-Gordon equation with a singularly perturbed parameter in a ball. Under the Robin boundary condition, the solution asymptotically forms a quite steep boundary layer in a thin annular region, and rapidly becomes a flat curve outside this region. {Focusing more particularly on the structure of the thin annular layer in this region, the pointwise asymptotic expansion involving the domain-size is evaluated more sharply, where the domain-size exactly appears in the second term of the asymptotic expansion.} It should be stressed that the standard argument of mat…
Partial differential equations (PDEs) are used, with huge success, to model phenomena arising across all scientific and engineering disciplines. However, across an equally wide swath, there exist situations in which PDE models fail to adequately model observed phenomena or are not the best available model for that purpose. On the other hand, in many situations, nonlocal models that account for interaction occurring at a distance have been shown to more faithfully and effectively model observed phenomena that involve possible singularities and other anomalies. In this article, we consider a gen…
We develop a linear theory of very weak solutions for nonlocal eigenvalue problems $\mathcal L u = λu + f$ involving integro-differential operators posed in bounded domains with homogeneous Dirichlet exterior condition, with and without singular boundary data. We consider mild hypotheses on the Green's function and the standard eigenbasis of the operator. The main examples in mind are the fractional Laplacian operators. Without singular boundary datum and when $λ$ is not an eigenvalue of the operator, we construct an $L^2$-projected theory of solutions, which we extend to the optimal space of …
We present and analyse a novel manifestation of the revival phenomenon for linear spatially periodic evolution equations, in the concrete case of three nonlocal equations that arise in water wave theory and are defined by convolution kernels. Revival in these cases is manifested in the form of dispersively quantised cusped solutions at rational times. We give an analytic description of this phenomenon, and present illustrative numerical simulations.
