We consider the well-known minimizing-movement approach to the definition of a solution of gradient-flow type equations by means of an implicit Euler scheme depending on an energy and a dissipation term. We perturb the energy by considering a ($Γ$-converging) sequence and the dissipation by varying multiplicative terms. The scheme depends on two small parameters $\varepsilon$ and $τ$, governing energy and time scales, respectively. We characterize the extreme cases when $\varepsilon/τ$ and $τ/\varepsilon$ converges to $0$ sufficiently fast, and exhibit a sufficient condition that guarantees that the limit is indeed independent of $\varepsilon$ and $τ$. We give examples showing that this in general is not the case, and apply this approach to study some discrete approximations, the homogenization of wiggly energies and geometric crystalline flows obtained as limits of ferromagnetic energies.
We prove that a general condition introduced by Colombo and Gobbino to study limits of curves of maximal slope allows also to characterize minimizing movements along a sequence of functionals as curves of maximal slope of a limit functional.
Curves of maximal slope are a reference gradient-evolution notion in metric spaces and arise as variational formulation of a vast class of nonlinear diffusion equations. Existence theories for curves of maximal slope are often based on minimizing-movements schemes, most notably on the Euler scheme. We present here an alternative minimizing-movements approach, yielding more regular discretizations, serving as a-posteriori convergence estimator, and allowing for a simple convergence proof.
We study an $L^{2}$-type gradient flow of an immersed elastic curve in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ whose endpoints repel each other via a Coulomb potential. By De Giorgi's minimizing movements scheme we prove long-time existence of the flow. The work is complemented by several numerical experiments.
We study the mean curvature motion of a droplet flowing by mean curvature on a horizontal hyperplane with a possibly nonconstant prescribed contact angle. Using the minimizing movements method we show the existence of a weak evolution, and its compatibility with a distributional solution. We also prove various comparison results.
We present new abstract results on the interrelation between the minimizing movement scheme for gradient flows along a sequence of Gamma-converging functionals and the gradient flow motion for the corresponding limit functional, in a general metric space. We are able to allow a relaxed form of minimization in each step of the scheme, and so we present new relaxation results too.
The gradient flow of the Canham-Helfrich functional is tackled via the Generalized Minimizing Movements approach. We prove the existence of solutions in Wasserstein spaces of varifolds, as well as upper and lower diameter bounds. In the more regular setting of multiply covered $C^{1,1}$ surfaces, we provide a Li-Yau-type estimate for the Canham-Helfrich energy and prove the conservation of multiplicity along the evolution.
We perform a convergence analysis of a discrete-in-time minimization scheme approximating a finite dimensional singularly perturbed gradient flow. We allow for different scalings between the viscosity parameter $\varepsilon$ and the time scale $τ$. When the ratio $\frac{\varepsilon}τ$ diverges, we rigorously prove the convergence of this scheme to a (discontinuous) Balanced Viscosity solution of the quasistatic evolution problem obtained as formal limit, when $\varepsilon\to 0$, of the gradient flow. We also characterize the limit evolution corresponding to an asymptotically finite ratio betwe…
The purpose of this paper is to introduce a Minimizing Movement approach to a class of scalar reaction-diffusion equations, which is built on their gradient-flow-like structure in the space of finite nonnegative Radon measures, endowed with the recently introduced Hellinger-Kantorovich distance. Moreover, a superdifferentiability property of the Hellinger-Kantorovich distance, which will play an important role in this context, is established in the general setting of a separable Hilbert space.
We prove the existence of a weak global in time mean curvature flow of a bounded partition of space using the method of minimizing movements. The result is extended to the case when suitable driving forces are present. We also prove some consistency results for a minimizing movement solution with smooth and viscosity solutions when the evolution starts from a partition made by a union of bounded sets at a positive distance. In addition, the motion starting from the union of convex sets at a positive distance agrees with the classical mean curvature flow and is stable with respect to the Hausdo…
We consider a fractional porous medium equation that extends the classical porous medium and fractional heat equations. The flow is studied in the space of periodic probability measures endowed with a non-local transportation distance constructed in the spirit of the Benamou-Brenier formula. For initial periodic probability measures, we show the existence of absolutely continuous curves that are generalized minimizing movements associated to Rényi entropy. For that, we need to obtain entropy and distance properties and to develop a subdifferential calculus in our setting.
Under suitable assumptions on the family of anisotropies, we prove the existence of a weak global $\frac{1}{n+1}$-Hölder continuous in time mean curvature flow with mobilities of a bounded anisotropic partition in any dimension using the method of minimizing movements. The result is extended to the case when suitable driving forces are present. We improve the Hölder exponent to $\frac12$ in the case of partitions with the same anisotropy and the same mobility and provide a weak comparision result in this setting for a weak anisotropic mean curvature flow of a partition and an anisotropic mean …
We consider the thresholding scheme and explore its connection to De Giorgi's ideas on gradient flows in metric spaces; here applied to mean curvature flow as the steepest descent of the interfacial area. The basis of our analysis is the observation by Esedoglu and the second author that thresholding can be interpreted as a minimizing movements scheme for an energy that approximates the interfacial area. De Giorgi's framework provides an optimal energy dissipation relation for the scheme in which we pass to the limit to derive a dissipation-based weak formulation of mean curvature flow. Althou…
We prove existence of variational solutions for a class of doubly nonlinear nonlocal evolution equations whose prototype is the double phase equation \begin{align*} \partial_t u^m &+ \text{P.V.}\int_{\mathbb{R}^N} \frac{|u(x,t)-u(y,t)|^{p-2}(u(x,t)-u(y,t))}{|x-y|^{N+ps}}\\&+a(x,y)\frac{|u(x,t)-u(y,t)|^{q-2}(u(x,t)-u(y,t))}{|x-y|^{N+qr}} \,dy = 0,\,m>0,\,p>1,\,s,r\in (0,1). \end{align*} We make use of the approach of minimizing movements pioneered by DeGiorgi and Ambrosio and refined by Bögelein, Duzaar, Marcellini, and co-authors to study nonlinear parabolic equations with non-standard growth.
We prove the existence of nonnegative weak solutions to a class of second and fourth order nonautonomous nonlinear evolution equations with an explicitly time-dependent mobility function posed on the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$, for arbitrary $d\ge 1$. Exploiting a very formal gradient flow structure, the cornerstone of our proof is a modified version of the classical minimizing movement scheme for gradient flows. The mobility function is required to satisfy - at each time point separately - the conditions by which one can define a modified Wasserstein distance on the space of probability densi…

Recently solutions to the aggregation equation on compact Riemannian Manifolds have been studied with different techniques. This work demonstrates the small time existence of measure-valued solutions for suitably regular intrinsic potentials. The main tool is the use of the minimizing movement scheme which together with the optimality conditions yield a finite speed of propagation. The main technical difficulty is non-differentiability of the potential in the cut locus which is resolved via the propagation properties of geodesic interpolations of the minimizing movement scheme and passes to th…

We consider the evolution of sets by nonlocal mean curvature and we discuss the preservation along the flow of two geometric properties, which are the mean convexity and the outward minimality. The main tools in our analysis are the level set formulation and the minimizing movement scheme for the nonlocal flow. When the initial set is outward minimizing, we also show the convergence of the (time integrated) nonlocal perimeters of the discrete evolutions to the nonlocal perimeter of the limit flow.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the gradient flow \begin{equation} \label{eq:81} \tag{$\star$} u'(t)=-\nablaϕ(u(t)),\quad t\ge 0;\quad u(0)=u_0, \end{equation} generated by a continuously differentiable function $ϕ:\mathbb H \to \mathbb R$ in a Hilbert space $\mathbb H$ and study the reverse approximation of solutions to ($\star$) by the De Giorgi Minimizing Movement approach. We prove that if $\mathbb H$ has finite dimension and $ϕ$ is quadratically bounded from below (in particular if $ϕ$ is Lipschitz) then for every solution $u$ to ($\star$) (which may have an infinite number of solution…
An advective Cahn-Hilliard model motivated by thin film formation is studied in this paper. The one-dimensional evolution equation under consideration includes a transport term, whose presence prevents from identifying a gradient flow structure. Existence and uniqueness of solutions, together with continuous dependence on the initial data and an energy equality are proved by combining a minimizing movement scheme with a fixed point argument. Finally, it is shown that, when the contribution of the transport term is small, the equation possesses a global attractor and converges, as the transport…

We study the asymptotic behavior of a discrete-in-time minimizing movement scheme for square lattice interfaces when both the lattice spacing and the time step vanish. The motion is assumed to be driven by minimization of a weighted random perimeter functional with an additional deterministic dissipation term. We consider rectangular initial sets and lower order random perturbations of the perimeter functional. In case of stationary, $α$-mixing perturbations we prove a stochastic homogenization result for the interface velocity. We also provide an example which indicates that stationary, ergod…
We consider the thresholding scheme, a time discretization for mean curvature flow introduced by Merriman, Bence and Osher. We prove a convergence result in the multi-phase case. The result establishes convergence towards a weak formulation of mean curvature flow in the BV-framework of sets of finite perimeter. The proof is based on the interpretation of the thresholding scheme as a minimizing movement scheme by Esedoglu et. al.. This interpretation means that the thresholding scheme preserves the structure of (multi-phase) mean curvature flow as a gradient flow w. r. t. the total interfacial …
We consider $\mathbb{S}^2$-valued maps on a domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ minimizing a perturbation of the Dirichlet energy with vertical penalization in $Ω$ and horizontal penalization on $\partialΩ$. We first show the global minimality of universal constant configurations in a specific range of the physical parameters using a Poincaré-type inequality. Then, we prove that any energy minimizer takes its values into a fixed meridian of the sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$, and deduce uniqueness of minimizers up to the action of the appropriate symmetry group. We also prove a comparison principle for minim…
This paper is concerned with the following singularly perturbed non-local semi-linear problem \begin{equation} \label{h} \tag{$\ast$} \begin{cases} \varepsilon^2 Δu=\frac{m}{\int_Ωe^{u}{\mathrm{d}x}}u e^u\quad &\mathrm{in}~Ω,\\ u= u_0~&\mathrm{on}~\partialΩ, \end{cases} \end{equation} which corresponds to the stationary problem of a chemotaxis system describing the aerobic bacterial movement, where $Ω$ is a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N (N\geq 1)$, $\varepsilon, m$ and $u_0$ are positive constants. We show that the problem \eqref{h} admits a unique classical solution which is of bound…
Inspired by recent works on the threshold dynamics scheme for multi-phase mean curvature flow (by Esedoglu-Otto and Laux-Otto), we introduce a novel framework to approximate solutions of the Muskat problem with surface tension. Our approach is based on interpreting the Muskat problem as a gradient flow in a product Wasserstein space. This perspective allows us to construct weak solutions via a minimizing movements scheme. Rather than working directly with the singular surface tension force, we instead relax the perimeter functional with the heat content energy approximation of Esedoglu-Otto. T…
We examine a steepest energy descent flow with obstacle constraint in higher order energy frameworks where the maximum principle is not available. We construct the flow under general assumptions using De Giorgi's minimizing movement scheme. Our main application will be the elastic flow of graph curves with Navier boundary conditions for which we study long-time existence and asymptotic behavior.
This paper deals with the limit cases for $s$-fractional heat flows in a cylindrical domain, with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions, as $s\to 0^+$ and $s\to 1^-$\,. To this purpose, we describe the fractional heat flows as minimizing movements of the corresponding Gagliardo seminorms, with respect to the $L^2$ metric. First, we provide an abstract stability result for minimizing movements in Hilbert spaces, with respect to a sequence of $Γ$-converging uniformly $λ$-convex energy functionals. Then, we provide the $Γ$-convergence analysis of the $s$-Gagliardo seminorms as $s\to 0^+$ and …
In this paper, we consider the $L^2$-gradient flow for the modified $p$-elastic energy defined on planar closed curves. We formulate a notion of weak solution for the flow and prove the existence of global-in-time weak solutions with $p \ge 2$ for initial curves in the energy space via minimizing movements. Moreover, we prove the existence of unique global-in-time solutions to the flow with $p=2$ and obtain their subconvergence to an elastica as $t \to \infty$.
We provide a new convergence proof of the celebrated Merriman-Bence-Osher scheme for multiphase mean curvature flow. Our proof applies to the new variant incorporating a general class of surface tensions and mobilities, including typical choices for modeling grain growth. The basis of the proof are the minimizing movements interpretation of Esedoğlu and Otto and De Giorgi's general theory of gradient flows. Under a typical energy convergence assumption we show that the limit satisfies a sharp energy-dissipation relation.
We continue our analysis of the thresholding scheme from the variational viewpoint and prove a conditional convergence result towards Brakke's notion of mean curvature flow. Our proof is based on a localized version of the minimizing movements interpretation of Esedoğlu and the second author. We apply De Giorgi's variational interpolation to the thresholding scheme and pass to the limit in the resulting energy-dissipation inequality. The result is conditional in the sense that we assume the time-integrated energies of the approximations to converge to those of the limit.
In this paper I will revisit the construction of a global weak solution to the volume preserving mean curvature flow via discrete minimizing movement scheme by Mugnai-Seis-Spadaro (2016). This method is based on the gradient flow approach due to Almgren-Taylor-Wang (1993) and Luckhaus-Strurzenhecker (1995) and my aim is to replace the volume penalization by implementing the volume constraint directly in the discrete scheme, which from practical point of view is perhaps more natural. A technical novelty is the proof of the density estimate which is based on the second variation condition of the…
We study the evolution of closed inextensible planar curves under a second order flow that decreases the $p$-elastic energy. A short time existence result for $p \in (1,\infty)$ is obtained via a minimizing movements method. For $p = 2$, that is in the case of the classic elastic energy, long-time existence is retrieved.
In this paper, we investigate an optimal design problem motivated by some issues arising in population dynamics. In a nutshell, we aim at determining the optimal shape of a region occupied by resources for maximizing the survival ability of a species in a given box and we consider the general case of Robin boundary conditions on its boundary. Mathematically, this issue can be modeled with the help of an extremal indefinite weight linear eigenvalue problem. The optimal spatial arrangement is obtained by minimizing the positive principal eigenvalue with respect to the weight, under a L 1 constra…
We prove the existence, uniqueness, and regularity of minimizers of a polyconvex functional in two and three dimensions, which corresponds to the $H^1$ projection of measure-preserving maps. Our result introduces a new criteria on the uniqueness of the minimizer, based on the smallness of the lagrange multiplier. No estimate on the second derivatives of the pressure is needed to get a unique global minimizer. As an application, we construct a minimizing movement scheme to construct $L^r$ solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation for a short time interval.
