We prove the existence, uniqueness, and regularity of minimizers of a polyconvex functional in two and three dimensions, which corresponds to the $H^1$ projection of measure-preserving maps. Our result introduces a new criteria on the uniqueness of the minimizer, based on the smallness of the lagrange multiplier. No estimate on the second derivatives of the pressure is needed to get a unique global minimizer. As an application, we construct a minimizing movement scheme to construct $L^r$ solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation for a short time interval.
Here we develop a regularity theory for a polyconvex functional in $2\times2-$dimensional compressible finite elasticity. In particular, we consider energy minimizers/stationary points of the functional $I(u)=\int\limits_Ω{\frac{1}{2}|\nabla u|^2+ρ(\det\nabla u)\;dx},$ where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ is open and bounded, $u\in W^{1,2}(Ω,\mathbb{R}^2)$ and $ρ:\mathbb{R}\rightarrow\mathbb{R}_0^+$ smooth and convex with $ρ(s)=0$ for all $s\le0$ and $ρ$ becomes affine when $s$ exceeds some value $s_0>0.$ Additionally, we may impose boundary conditions. The first result we show is that every stationar…
We present an existence theorem for a large class of nonlinearly elastic shells with low regularity in the framework of a two-dimensional theory involving the mean and Gaussian curvatures. We restrict our discussion to hyperelastic materials, that is to elastic materials possessing a stored energy function. Under some specific conditions of polyconvexity, coerciveness and growth of the stored energy function, we prove the existence of global minimizers. In addition, we define a general class of polyconvex stored energy functions which satisfies a coerciveness inequality.
We provide some counterexamples concerning the uniqueness and regularity of weak solutions to the initial-boundary value problem for gradient flows of certain strongly polyconvex functionals by showing that such a problem can possess a trivial classical solution as well as infinitely many weak solutions that are nowhere smooth. Such polyconvex functions have been constructed in the previous work, and the nonuniqueness and nonregularity will be achieved by reformulating the gradient flow as a space-time partial differential relation and then using the convex integration method to construct cert…
We prove existence and uniqueness of minimizers for a family of energy functionals that arises in Elasticity and involves polyconvex integrands over a certain subset of displacement maps. This work extends previous results by Awi and Gangbo to a larger class of integrands. First, we study these variational problems over displacements for which the determinant is positive. Second, we consider a limit case in which the functionals are degenerate. In that case, the set of admissible displacements reduces to that of incompressible displacements which are measure preserving maps. Finally, we establ…
We develop a theory of existence of minimizers of energy functionals in vectorial problems based on a nonlocal gradient under Dirichlet boundary conditions. The model shares many features with the peridynamics model and is also applicable to nonlocal solid mechanics, especially nonlinear elasticity. This nonlocal gradient was introduced in an earlier work, inspired by Riesz' fractional gradient, but suitable for bounded domains. The main assumption on the integrand of the energy is polyconvexity. Thus, we adapt the corresponding results of the classical case to this nonlocal context, notably, …
In this article we develop a fully discrete variational scheme that approximates the equations of three dimensional elastodynamics with polyconvex stored energy. The fully discrete scheme is based on a time-discrete variational scheme developed by S.~Demoulini, D.~M.~A.~Stuart and A.~E.~Tzavaras (2001). We show that the fully discrete scheme is unconditionally stable. The proof of stability is based on a relative entropy estimation for the fully discrete approximates.
We consider a variational scheme developed by S. Demoulini, D. M. A. Stuart and A. E. Tzavaras [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 157 (2001)] that approximates the equations of three dimensional elastodynamics with polyconvex stored energy. We establish the convergence of the time-continuous interpolates constructed in the scheme to a solution of polyconvex elastodynamics before shock formation. The proof is based on a relative entropy estimation for the time-discrete approximants in an environment of Lp-theory bounds, and provides an error estimate for the approximation before the formation of shocks…
We propose a variational scheme for the construction of isentropic processes of the equations of adiabatic thermoelasticity with polyconvex internal energy. The scheme hinges on the embedding of the equations of adiabatic polyconvex thermoelasticity into a symmetrizable hyperbolic system. We establish existence of minimizers for an associated minimization theorem and construct measure-valued solutions that dissipate the total energy. We prove that the scheme converges when the limiting solution is smooth.
In the first part of this doctoral thesis we develop a regularity theory for a polyconvex functional in compressible elasticity. In the second part, we will concentrate on uniqueness questions in various situations of finite elasticity. Here it is our main objective to establish uniqueness criteria, which when present, guarantee the uniqueness of the corresponding global minimizer. Then various applications and generalisations are discussed one of which is the construction of a counterexample to regularity.
Energy minimality selects among possible configurations of a continuous body with and without cracks those compatible with assigned boundary conditions of Dirichlet-type. Crack paths are described in terms of curvature varifolds so that we consider both \textquotedblleft phase" (cracked or non-cracked) and crack orientation. The energy considered is gradient polyconvex: it accounts for relative variations of second-neighbor surfaces and pressure-confinement effects. We prove the existence of minimizers for such an energy. They are pairs of deformations and varifolds. The former ones are taken …
We show existence of an energetic solution to a model of shape memory alloys in which the elastic energy is described by means of a gradient-polyconvex functional. This allows us to show existence of a solution based on weak continuity of nonlinear minors of deformation gradients in Sobolev spaces. Resulting deformations are orientation-preserving and injective everywhere in a domain representing the specimen.
In this sequel to a previous paper, we construct certain smooth strongly polyconvex functions $F$ on $\mathbb M^{2\times 2}$ such that $σ=DF$ satisfies the Condition (OC) in that paper. As a result, we show that the initial-boundary value problem for the gradient flow of such polyconvex energy functionals is highly ill-posed even for some smooth initial-boundary data in the sense that the problem possesses a weakly* convergent sequence of Lipschitz weak solutions whose limit is not a weak solution.
In this paper we address nonlocal vector variational principles obtained by substitution of the classical gradient by the Riesz fractional gradient. We show the existence of minimizers in Bessel fractional spaces under the main assumption of polyconvexity of the energy density, and, as a consequence, the existence of solutions to the associated Euler--Lagrange system of nonlinear fractional PDE. The main ingredient is the fractional Piola identity, which establishes that the fractional divergence of the cofactor matrix of the fractional gradient vanishes. This identity implies the weak converg…
We use gradient Young measures generated by Lipschitz maps to define a relaxation of integral functionals which are allowed to attain the value $+\infty$ and can model ideal locking in elasticity as defined by Prager in 1957. Furthermore, we show the existence of minimizers for variational problems for elastic materials with energy densities that can be expressed in terms of a function being continuous in the deformation gradient and convex in the gradient of the cofactor (and possibly also the gradient of the determinant) of the corresponding deformation gradient. We call the related energy f…
For the equations of elastodynamics with polyconvex stored energy, and some related simpler systems, we define a notion of dissipative measure-valued solution and show that such a solution agrees with a classical solution with the same initial data when such a classical solution exists. As an application of the method we give a short proof of strong convergence in the continuum limit of a lattice approximation of one dimensional elastodynamics in the presence of a classical solution. Also, for a system of conservation laws endowed with a positive and convex entropy, we show that dissipative me…
Adapting a method introduced by Ball, Muite, Schryvers and Tirry, we construct a polyconvex isotropic energy function $W\colon\operatorname{GL^+}(n)\to\mathbb{R}$ which is equal to the classical Hencky strain energy \[ W_{\mathrm{H}}(F) = μ\,\lVert\operatorname{dev}_n\log U\rVert^2+\fracκ{2}\,[\operatorname{tr}(\log U)]^2 = μ\,\lVert\log U\rVert^2+\fracΛ{2}\,[\operatorname{tr}(\log U)]^2 \] in a neighborhood of the identity matrix; here, $\operatorname{GL^+}(n)$ denotes the set of $n\times n$-matrices with positive determinant, $F\in\operatorname{GL^+}(n)$ denotes the deformation gradient, $U=…
We show the existence of an energetic solution to a quasistatic evolutionary model of shape memory alloys. Elastic behavior of each material phase/variant is described by polyconvex energy density. Additionally, to every phase boundary, there is an interface-polyconvex energy assigned, introduced by M. Šilhavý. The model considers internal variables describing the evolving spatial arrangement of the material phases and a deformation mapping with its first-order gradients. It allows for injectivity and orientation-preservation of deformations. Moreover, the resulting material microstructures ha…

In this work the following energy is considered $I(u)=\int\limits_B{\frac{1}{2}|\nabla u|^2+ρ(\det\nabla u)\;dx},$ where $B\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ denotes the unit ball, $u\in W^{1,2}(B,\mathbb{R}^2),$ and $ρ:\mathbb{R}\rightarrow\mathbb{R}_0^+$ smooth and convex with $ρ(s)=0$ for all $s\le0$ and $ρ$ becomes affine when $s$ exceeds some value $s_0>0.$ Additionally, we may impose $(M\in \mathbb{N}\setminus\{0\})-$covering maps as boundary conditions in a suitable fashion. For such situations we then construct radially symmetric $M-$covering stationary points of the energy, which are at least $C^1$…
We propose a system of conservation laws with relaxation source terms (i.e. balance laws) for non-isothermal viscoelastic flows of Maxwell fluids. The system is an extension of the polyconvex elastodynamics of hyperelastic bodies using additional structure variables. It is obtained by writing the Helmholtz free energy as the sum of a volumetric energy density (function of the determinant of the deformation gradient det F and the temperature $θ$ like the standard perfect-gas law or Noble-Abel stiffened-gas law) plus a polyconvex strain energy density function of F, $θ$ and of symmetric positive…
We consider a class of models for nonlinearly elastic surfaces in this work. We have in mind thin, highly deformable structures modeled directly as two-dimensional nonlinearly elastic continua, accounting for finite membrane and bending strains and thickness change. We assume that the stored-energy density is polyconvex with respect to the second gradient of the deformation, and we require that it grow unboundedly as the local area ratio approaches zero. For sufficiently fast growth, we show that the latter is uniformly bounded away from zero at an energy minimizer. With this in hand, we rigor…
We study the regularity of the interface for optimal energy configurations of functionals involving bulk energies with an additional perimeter penalization of the interface. It is allowed the dependence on $(x,u)$ for the bulk energy. For a minimal configuration $(E,u)$, the Hölder continuity of $u$ is well known. We give an estimate for the singular set of the boundary $\partial E$. Namely we show that the Hausdorff dimension of the singular set is strictly smaller than $n-1$.
This paper discusses the regularity of multiple-valued Dirichlet minimizing maps into the sphere. It shows that even at branched point, as long as the normalized energy is small enough, we have the energy decay estimate. Combined with the previous work by Chun-Chi Lin, we get our first estimate that m-2 dimensional Hausdorff measure of singular set is zero. Furthermore, by looking at the tangent map and using dimension reduction argument, we show that the singular set is at least of codimension 3.
We prove existence and regularity of minimisers for the Canham-Helfrich energy in the class of weak (possibly branched and bubbled) immersions of the $2$-sphere. This solves (the spherical case) of the minimisation problem proposed by Helfrich in 1973, modelling lipid bilayer membranes. On the way to prove the main results we establish the lower semicontinuity of the Canham-Helfrich energy under weak convergence of (possibly branched and bubbled) weak immersions.
This paper studies the regularity and energy conservation problems for the 2D supercritical quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation. We apply an approach of splitting the dissipation wavenumber to obtain a new regularity condition which is weaker than all the Prodi-Serrin type regularity conditions. Moreover, we prove that any weak solution of the supercritical SQG in $L^2(0,T; B^{1/2}_{2,c(\mathbb N)})$ satisfies energy equality.
We study the partial regularity of minimizers for certain singular functionals in the calculus of variations, motivated by Ball and Majumdar's recent modification [BM] of the Landau-de Gennes energy functional.
We give sufficient conditions on the regularity of solutions to the inhomogeneous incompressible Euler and the compressible isentropic Euler systems in order for the energy to be conserved. Our strategy relies on commutator estimates similar to those employed by P. Constantin et al. for the homogeneous incompressible Euler equations.
We revisit some issues about existence and regularity for the wave equation in noncylindrical domains. Using a method of diffeomorphisms, we show how, through increasing regularity assumptions, the existence of weak solutions, their improved regularity and an energy balance can be derived. As an application, we give a rigorous definition of dynamic energy release rate density for some problems of debonding, and we formulate a proper notion of solution for such problems. We discuss the consistence of such formulation with previous ones, given in literature for particular cases.
Motivated by the construction of time-periodic solutions for the three-dimensional Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in the case of soft and small ferromagnetic particles, we investigate the regularity properties of minimizers of the micromagnetic energy functional at the boundary. In particular, we show that minimizers are regular provided the volume of the particle is sufficiently small. The approach uses a reflection construction at the boundary and an adaption of the well-known regularity theory for minimizing harmonic maps into spheres.
We prove new global Hölder-logarithmic stability estimates for the near-field inverse scattering problem in dimension $d\geq 3$. Our estimates are given in uniform norm for coefficient difference and related stability efficiently increases with increasing energy and/or coefficient regularity. In addition, a global logarithmic stability estimate for this inverse problem in dimension $d=2$ is also given.
The repulsion strength at the origin for repulsive/attractive potentials determines the regularity of local minimizers of the interaction energy. In this paper, we show that if this repulsion is like Newtonian or more singular than Newtonian (but still locally integrable), then the local minimizers must be locally bounded densities (and even continuous for more singular than Newtonian repulsion). We prove this (and some other regularity results) by first showing that the potential function associated to a local minimizer solves an obstacle problem and then by using classical regularity results…
The system of three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations is considered. We obtain some new local energy bounds that enable us to improve several $ε$-regularity criteria. They key idea here is to view the `head pressure' as a signed distribution belonging to certain fractional Sobolev space of negative order. This allows us to capture the oscillation of the pressure in our criteria.
In this paper we prove a $\mathcal C^{1,α}$ regularity result for minimizers of the planar Griffith functional arising from a variational model of brittle fracture. We prove that any isolated connected component of the crack, the singular set of a minimizer, is locally a $\mathcal C^{1,α}$ curve outside a set of zero Hausdorff measure.
This paper addresses several problems associated to local energy solutions (in the sense of Lemarié-Rieusset) to the Navier-Stokes equations with initial data which is sufficiently small at large or small scales as measured using truncated Morrey-type quantities, namely: (1) global existence for a class of data including the critical $L^2$-based Morrey space; (2) initial and eventual regularity of local energy solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with initial data sufficiently small at small or large scales; (3) small-large uniqueness of local energy solutions for data in the critical $L^2…
We demonstrate that Radon measures which arise as the limit of the Modica-Mortola measures associated to phase-fields with uniformly bounded diffuse area and Willmore energy may be singular at the boundary of a domain and discuss implications for practical applications. We furthermore give partial regularity results for the phase-fields $u_ε$ at the boundary in terms of boundary conditions and counterexamples without boundary conditions.
In this paper we consider minimizers for nonlocal energy functionals generalizing elastic energies that are connected with the theory of peridynamics \cite{Silling2000} or nonlocal diffusion models \cite{Rossi}. We derive nonlocal versions of the Euler-Lagrange equations under two sets of growth assumptions for the integrand. Existence of minimizers is shown for integrands with joint convexity (in the function and nonlocal gradient components). By using the convolution structure we show regularity of solutions for certain Euler-Lagrange equations. No growth assumptions are needed for the exist…
In this paper, we study the defocusing energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equations $$ i\partial_t u + Δu = |u|^{\frac{4}{d-2}} u. $$ When $d=3,4$, we prove the almost sure scattering for the equations with non-radial data in $H_x^s$ for any $s\in\mathbb{R}$. In particular, our result does not rely on any spherical symmetry, size or regularity restrictions.
We prove the existence of minimisers for a family of models related to the single-slip-to-single-plane relaxation of single-crystal, strain-gradient elastoplasticity with $L^p$-hardening penalty. In these relaxed models, where only one slip-plane normal can be activated at each material point, the main challenge is to show that the energy of geometrically necessary dislocations is lower-semicontinuous along bounded-energy sequences which satisfy the single-plane condition, meaning precisely that this side condition should be preserved in the weak $L^p$-limit. This is done with the aid of an 'e…
In this paper, we study the relaxed energy for biharmonic maps from a $m$-dimensional domain into spheres. By an approximation method, we prove the existence of a minimizer of the relaxed energy of the Hessian energy, and that the minimizer is biharmonic and smooth outside a singular set $Σ$ of finite $(m-4)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. Moreover, when $m=5$, we prove that the singular set $Σ$ is 1-rectifiable.
Using the harmonic map heat flow and the function spaces of Tataru and the author, we establish a large data local well-posedness result in the energy class for wave maps from two-dimensional Minkowski space $\R^{1+2}$ to hyperbolic spaces $\H^m$. This is one of the five claims required in an earlier paper in this series to prove global regularity for such wave maps.
We investigate minimizers defined on a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$ for the Maier--Saupe Q--tensor energy used to characterize nematic liquid crystal configurations. The energy density is singular, as in Ball and Mujamdar's modification of the Ginzburg--Landau Q--tensor model, so as to constrain the competing states to have eigenvalues in the closure of a physically realistic range. We prove that minimizers are regular and in several model problems we are able to use this regularity to prove that minimizers have eigenvalues strictly within the physical range.
We show that wave maps from Minkowski space $\R^{1+n}$ to a sphere $S^{m-1}$ are globally smooth if the initial data is smooth and has small norm in the critical Sobolev space $\dot H^{n/2}$, in all dimensions $n \geq 2$. This generalizes the results in the prequel [math.AP/0010068] of this paper, which addressed the high-dimensional case $n \geq 5$. In particular, in two dimensions we have global regularity whenever the energy is small, and global regularity for large data is thus reduced to demonstrating non-concentration of energy.
We show $C^{1,α}$-regularity for energy minimizing maps from a 2-dimensional Riemannian manifold into a Finsler space $(\R^n, F)$ with a Finsler structure $F(u,X)$.
This paper is the first part of a trilogy dedicated to a proof of global well-posedness and scattering of the (4+1)-dimensional mass-less Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equation (MKG) for any finite energy initial data. The main result of the present paper is a large energy local well-posedness theorem for MKG in the global Coulomb gauge, where the lifespan is bounded from below by the energy concentration scale of the data. Hence the proof of global well-posedness is reduced to establishing non-concentration of energy. To deal with non-local features of MKG we develop initial data excision and gluing t…
In this article we study the gradient flow of the Möbius energy introduced by O'Hara in 1991. We will show a fundamental $\varepsilon$-regularity result that allows us to bound the infinity norm of all derivatives for some time if the energy is small on a certain scale. This result enables us to characterize the formation of a singularity in terms of concentrations of energy and allows us to construct a blow-up profile at a possible singularity. This solves one of the open problems listed by Zheng-Xu He. Ruling out blow-ups for planar curves, we will prove that the flow transforms every planar…
We establish global existence for the energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb{S}^3$. This follows similar lines to the work on $\mathbb{T}^3$ but requires new extinction results for linear solutions and bounds on the first nonlinear iterate at a Euclidean profile that are adapted to the new geometry.
We study a complex non-newtonian fluid that models the flow of nematic liquid crystals. The fluid is described by a system that couples a forced Navier-Stokes system with a parabolic-type system. We prove the existence of global weak solutions in dimensions two and three. We show the existence of a Lyapunov functional for the smooth solutions of the coupled system and use the cancellations that allow its existence to prove higher global regularity, in dimension two. We also show the weak-strong uniqueness in dimension two.
In the previous papers in this series, the global regularity conjecture for wave maps from two-dimensional Minkowski space $\R^{1+2}$ to hyperbolic space $\H^m$ was reduced to the problem of constructing a minimal-energy blowup solution which is almost periodic modulo symmetries in the event that the conjecture fails. In this paper, we show that this problem can be reduced further, to that of showing that solutions at the critical energy which are either frequency-delocalised, spatially-dispersed, or spatially-delocalised have bounded ``entropy''. These latter facts will be demonstrated in the…
We establish global regularity for the logarithmically energy-supercritical wave equation $\Box u = u^5 \log(2+u^2)$ in three spatial dimensions for spherically symmetric initial data, by modifying an argument of Ginibre, Soffer and Velo \cite{gsv} for the energy-critical equation. This example demonstrates that critical regularity arguments can penetrate very slightly into the supercritical regime.
Using the harmonic map heat flow, we construct an energy class for wave maps $ϕ$ from two-dimensional Minkowski space $\R^{1+2}$ to hyperbolic spaces $\H^m$, and then show (conditionally on a large data well-posedness claim for such wave maps) that no stationary, travelling, self-similar, or degenerate wave maps exist in this energy class. These results form three of the five claims required in our earlier paper (arXiv:0805.4666) to prove global regularity for such wave maps. (The conditional claim of large data well-posedness is one of the remaining claims required in that paper.)
We study various aspects related to boundary regularity of complete properly embedded Willmore surfaces in H3, particularly those related to assumptions on boundedness or smallness of a certain weighted version of the Willmore energy. We prove, in particular, that small energy controls C1 boundary regularity. We examine the possible lack of C1 convergence for sequences of surfaces with bounded Willmore energy and find that the mechanism responsible for this is a bubbling phenomenon, where energy escapes to infinity.
