Shape memory alloys as gradient-polyconvex materials

We show existence of an energetic solution to a model of shape memory alloys in which the elastic energy is described by means of a gradient-polyconvex functional. This allows us to show existence of a solution based on weak continuity of nonlinear minors of deformation gradients in Sobolev spaces. Resulting deformations are orientation-preserving and injective everywhere in a domain representing the specimen.

A sharp interface evolutionary model for shape memory alloys

We show the existence of an energetic solution to a quasistatic evolutionary model of shape memory alloys. Elastic behavior of each material phase/variant is described by polyconvex energy density. Elastoplasticity of gradient-polyconvex materials

We propose a model for rate-independent evolution in elastoplastic materials under external loading, which allows large strains. In the setting of strain-gradient plasticity with multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient, we prove the existence of the so-called energetic solution. The stored energy density function is assumed to depend on gradients of minors of the deformation gradient which makes our results applicable to shape-memory materials, for instance.

Quantitative aspects of the rigidity of branching microstructures in shape memory alloys via H-measures

We quantify the rigidity of branching microstructures in shape memory alloys undergoing cubic-to-tetragonal transformations in the geometrically linearized theory by making use of Tartar's H-measures. The main result is a $B^{2/3}_{1,\infty}$-estimate for the characteristic functions of twins, which heuristically suggests that the larger-scale interfaces can cluster on a set of Hausdorff-dimension $3-\frac{2}{3}$. We present here a model for instantaneous collisions in a solid made of shape memory alloys (SMA) by means of a predictive theory which is based on the introduction not only of macroscopic velocities and temperature, but also of microscopic velocities responsible of the austenite-martensites phase changes. Global existence result for phase transformations with heat transfer in shape memory alloys

We consider three-dimensional models for rate-independent processes describing materials undergoing phase transformations with heat transfer. The problem is formulated within the framework of generalized standard solids by the coupling of the momentum equilibrium equation and the flow rule with the heat transfer equation. Under appropriate regularity assumptions on the initial data, we prove the existence a global solution for this thermodynamically consistent system, by using a fixed-point argument combined with global energy estimates.

We study the energy decay of a damped Euler-Bernoulli beam which is subject to a pointwise feedback force representing a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) cable. We consider a singularly-perturbed two-well problem in the context of planar geometrically linear elasticity to model a rectangular martensitic nucleus in an austenitic matrix.
